I'm not familiar with them, but Jeph also once referred to Helmet as metal, when I've always considered Helmet to be a grunge band.

I'd always considered them to heavy-ish post-rock.

I mean, there are actually heavier post-rock bands, MONO for instance.

I always considered Helmet to be in that whole "proto-grunge" bullshit with The Melvins.

I don't listen to Helmet much, but I do love The Melvins.

Both Helmet and the Melvins are a bit off to the fringes of metal, but still, I would say, part of the metal canon.

Also, I was just checking on metal archives, and when the hell was Kurt Cobain in Earth!?

EDIT: He sung on one early song. Well well.

Kurt appears on a live release by Earth entitled "Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars". Most of the opinions of it I've seen say it's not particularily interesting.

Hey everyone.  I work for Russian Circles' label, Flameshovel, and I can definitely say they don't really classify themselves as metal, though they do get tied in with bands like Pelican a fair bit, who are definitively an instrumental metal band.  I'd say they're on the heavy end of the prog spectrum, with a little bit more driving weight than a lot of post-rock bands.  Plus, they're a three piece with a really thick sound, which I think is worth distinguishing from bands like Godspeed!, for instance, who have many more members to achieve the sort of thick sound they create.  I'm definitely glad Jeph gave them a shout-out, and I hope you all pick up the record and check them out when they come through your town.  They put on a killer live show.
