Title: The worst song ever?
Post by: Cartilage Head on 15 Jul 2006, 08:04
I usually am not the kind of dude to bash songs just because I don't like them.

 But..I was thinking about it..and..seriously..

I was going to go on another hate-filled rant about Hard-Fi's 'Cash Machine' which resumes to be ABSOLUTELY INESCAPABLE on just about every media, but really, that's just because it's a bad song that people can't stop throwing at me, but it's definately not the worst.

I can't really think of any song that's absolutely terrible that wouldn't be obvious right away. I offer Nickelback's discography (isn't that just one song anyway?).

By who?  I can think of ten worse songs without trying.  In fact, there's usually ten worse songs in the UK top 40 singles chart at any given time.  Starship were wimpy, not bad.

Common contenders for Worst Song Ever include "Paralysed" by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy (a man described by Dave Marsh in the Book of Rock Lists as being "incapable of playing any instrument, singing in tune, or keeping in time even with himself"), "Agadoo" by Black Lace and "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" by Napoleon XIV.  However, IMO the outright winner has to be the B-side of "They're Coming To Take Me Away", which is the A-side played backwards.

Are you crazy? I love this song. I sing it all the time!

Of course, nobody whores for attention as much as I do.

The Jackyl - Lumberjack (I think that's what they were called).

Basically... it seems to be AC/DC, but they're using a chainsaw as a guitar. Really, it sounds better in theory than how it works out.

"Smooth" by Santana and Rob Thomas. First, because it's the most overplayed song in the history of mankind. Second, because it has Rob Thomas. Third, because it's mediocre, which to me is worse than purely bad. One of the guys on Something Awful said that at least terrible music makes you feel something, whereas mediocre music bores you to death. And when that mediocre music gets played on every pop radio station in every city in every nation at least once an hour to this day...well, it makes fuses blow.

I submit that if the Steve Miller Band had not used the aforementioned effects in the way that they did when they did it, Beck (whose music I greatly respect) would have had one less influence when developing his sound.

One must take into account the context of the time period.  Such 'lame synth effects' weren't exactly an established musical device back then -- most artists thought it was cool but didn't know what the hell to do with it, thus giving rise to a plethora of songs that really did NOT need synth effects but had them anyway.  SMB, on the other hand, found a way to incorporate them into a song that integrated the sound into the lyrics -- damn near seamlessly.

"Fly Like an Eagle" is a classic.  "Life in the Fastlane", on the other hand, that I'll grant you.  Yech.

I firmly believe that they are one and the same band as Good Charlotte, and I challenge any of you to prove me wrong.  At the very least, they are the exact same level of shittiness.

Noclaw, on the Pop Group song, I have to say, I actually enjoyed it, and didn't really find it that terrible to listen to at all.

And I think Kai may have won for finding the shittiest band ever with Hawthorn Heights.  The video just drives the point home.  I have to say.  I love the shots of the band, with the band members who aren't the lead singer going "nuts" on their guitars in the background.  Also, the comments about how they're post-hardcore are great fun.

Wait, sorry... I take it all back-

Melissa Manchester "Don't Cry Out Loud" with a close runner up of Eric Carmen "I Can't Live If Living is Without You".

Just read those lyrics-

Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'cause she didn't want parades just passin' by her
So she painted on a smile and took up with some clown
While she danced without a net upon the wire
I know a lot about 'er 'cause, you see
Baby is an awful lot like me

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside, learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all

Baby saw that when they pulled that big top down
They left behind her dreams among the litter
The different kind of love she thought she'd found
There was nothin' left but sawdust and some glitter
But baby can't be broken 'cause you see
She had the finest teacher-that was me-I told 'er

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost made it

Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all

I know.  I get the lyrics to that Badfinger song and "All By Myself" mixed up in my head.  Generally the same melody, and both are terrible songs, but the sheer self-absorption of someone singing, passionately and sincerely,  about how he wants to be with someone just so he's not by himself is unbelievable. He can't even be said to have a shallow personality, it's more like a slick-spot. In all fairness, though, if I were Eric Carmen I wouldn't want to be left by myself either, because I'd be annoying.

The thing that makes me,
What the guys go crazy for.
They lose their minds,
The way I wind,
I think its time

La la-la la la,
Warm it up.
Lala-lalala,
The boys are waiting

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And their like
It's better than yours,
Damn right it's better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to charge

I can see youre on it,
You want me to teach thee
Techniques that freaks these boys,
It can't be bought,
Just know, thieves get caught,
Watch if your smart,

La la-la la la,
Warm it up,
La la-la la la,
The boys are waiting,

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And their like
It's better than yours,
Damn right it's better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to charge

Oh, once you get involved,
Everyone will look this way-so,
You must maintain your charm,
Same time maintain your halo,
Just get the perfect blend,
Plus what you have within,
Then next his eyes are squint,
Then he's picked up your scent,

Lala-lalala,
Warm it up,

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,

Hello everyone, I'm Paul!  Now, with that introduction out of the way...

The songs you've been mentioning usually simply have a total lack of talent...however, there is as big a gap between good and lack of talent as there is between lack of talent and bad.

I nominate Vampire King by AIDS Wolf. If you can finish the song, you have my respect, as you have a strong will. If you want to feel your entire body relax and a wave of euphoria wash over you, enqueue a good mellow song, like Jacknuggeted by Manitoba, right after Vampire King.

I'm not kidding this song will you tense up and mess with your brain.

I think I'll always skank when I hear the Specials. I totally look forward to collecting your manberries for that.

So?

Jessica Simpson is a total babe.  So are Mandy Moore, Britney Spears, and all of the Fanta girls.  I do, however, reserve the right to badmouth each and every one of them for unforgivable crimes against music.

I do not think they are TOTAL BABES though. I think they are attractive but I reserve "TOTAL BABES" for TOTAL BABES. Dig?

And I see where you're coming from but probably like a lot of people on this forum the music comes first and the image comes second for me. And I like Kelis' material - that which I've heard, anyhow. So the TOTAL BABEness of her is just an added bonus.

But Kai wins, I think. How does shit like that get made?

I think Piva and Dahv are tied for first.  I have to say -- they even make "milkshake" sound good.

Call me masochistic, but I scrolled through a couple of Dahv's songs just to see if the "Mean Girls" one was an isolated case of satire, and this is what I came up with:

Pass the Shirley Temple
Won't you pass the Shirley Temple
It's red
It's strong
And it make my brain go zing-a-zing zong

...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go trepan myself with a Desert Eagle.

That My Humps song really is an abortion.

I think the worst one would be one of many annoying local bands with kids who try to be Greenday and are really about as political as a turnip.

My theory with the milkshake song is that she doesn’t have a fucking clue what it means and she’s singing it because it kind of sounds dirty in a strange sort of way. But now that journalists are asking her about it in interviews she needs to make up ridiculously vague explanations so she doesn’t sound like a clueless tool.

In this case, a remix should work.

I think a lot of Celine Dion's discography merits strong consideration for inclusion on this list, but of course the archetypal Dion disaster is "My Heart Will Go On."  It does have a certain a certain campy charm, but it also has lyrical gems lifted right out of a game of hide and seek ("near, far, wherever you are"), that ridiculous vocal hitch which makes it sound like she's singing "I believe thatch the heart does go on." I feel like retching every time she "soars" for that operatic high note after the cheesy key change:  if you check the actual note on a piano, its not that high for a tenor, much less an alto or soprano.

I feel country is afflicted, like rap, in that most of what you hear will sound exactly the damn same because it sells and those who do something interesting don't tend to get noticed as much. I've heard plenty of the kind of country your describing, but there is plenty of country music which is great. And there is of course, one particular alt-country band who went bullshit wacko.

Country is based on a very specific sound and set of instruments. What little wiggle room there is comes in the form of good songwriting, so you're probably just listening to the wrong country. Yes, a lot of it sounds the same and it can get tiresome after a while, but you could say the same thing about punk. Or any genre, for that matter.

For those of you not familiar with the Eurovision Song Contest, it's an annual competition for the countries of Europe to put in their worst form of Europop. This was Lithuania's entry this year.

Or, if that isn't bad enough... take a look at the UK's entry this year...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Ne6F_SWbs&search=eurovision%20uk

It's hilariously bad.

Lithuania's entry was/is hilarious. One of the best songs the eurovision has seen ever.

The UK entry was indeed abysmal. There were people smiling in hell who were suddenly convinced that it could all be a lot worse.

Having said that, the new Justin Timberlake song is like a decaying corpse without the fun of crawling maggots.

I make a point of avoiding crap on the radio because of that. Although I will willingly sit and watch Eurovison because it's absolutely hysterical. Kinda double standards, but at least the songs in Eurovison don't make me want to rip people's faces off.

I say Mike Jones, for the song Back Then

Back then they didn't want me, now I'm hot they all on me.
Back then they didn't want me, now I'm hot they all on me.
Back then they didn't want me, now I'm hot they all on me.
Back then they didn't want me, now I'm hot they all on me.
Back then they didn't want me, now I'm hot they all on me.

For like 5 fucking minutes. And it was all over the radio for weeks.

Ehhh...I probably would like them, but I've only heard one song, the others were actually Mastadon. I was later TOLD they were Opeth. I heard a few more of their songs, and I like them now. It was a missunderstanding on my friends part. Which is understandable considering he says, and I quote "I'm a Metalhead! I like Nickleback!" So yeah, metalheadedness tarnished by idiot friend. Of course, the fact that the first time I got my bone on was to Linkin Park, so I guess I'm not much of a metalhead after all.

Anyone here heard of the song "Hips don't Lie"? Of course you have. I hate it.

Worst Album Ever would be "Queen of the Damned: The soundtrack" They had a dude from Linkin Park try to do a song that was supposed to be "Gothy", but it came out as "I'm gonna bone you, whether you like it or not!" One good song on the whole damn thing.

Another song that sucks is Change(In the house of flies) by Deaftones. I fucking hate that song.

I learnt to play it because it's fun, it's good practice for some common chord changes and arpeggiations, and because it's actually fairly tricky to play well (particularly the solo, which I still can't do end to end at speed).

I don't have a problem with people who can play Stairway To Heaven. I just get cranky at the people who learn the first couple of phrases and give up then, or the ones who play it badly.

Hm. As a recovering Nu-metal listener ("Hello my name is Andrew and I listen to Nu-metal" "Hello Andrew") I have to say I like two songs on there. "Redeemer" performed by Marilyn Manson and "Slept So Long" performed by Jay Gordon of Orgy.

But yeah the song that the guy from Linkin Park really sucks. Also "I HOPE YOU DIE" is not good lyrics.

Sad really, because as far as I know these songs were by one of the guys from Oingo Boingo who has collaborated with, among others, Tom Waits. There should have been some potential.

Those rules are way too American. Leather trousers are still pretty true over here in Europe, probably second only to kilts as metal-as-fuck lower-half clothing. Same with the grammar. Plus, there's rules missing, like the 'never by halfs' rule and all its applications: Half pints and mixers are false, shots and pints are true. T-shirts are false, longsleeves and vests are true, and so on.

I've gone off Opeth quite a bit, but I've got to say seeing them live catapulted them fucking way up in my estimation. Akerfeldt is a great front-man, really funny and with an appropriately outrageous accent, and their older tunes in particular slay a hell of a lot of ass. The Leper Affinity blew me, and the six other guys I was linked arms with in a headbanging line, completely away.

As for American pop music, they've been churning out a significant amount of crap since the 90s. I'll let "My Humps" slide, because it's not the worst track on the CD.

"SOS" by Rhianna is particularly annoying to hear 24/7 on the radio, in the gym, in the mall, and wherever the hell I go. I really need to get a mp3 player.

The metalheads that call Opeth "too soft", are clearly the less intelligent, neanderthal breed of metalhead. And I say this in all seriousness!

I consider Opeth to be one of the heaviest bands in the genre, simply they take things down quite often. They have mastered dynamics in a really subtle and effective way.

The contrast between the quiet and loud parts is an effect in it's self, since you get lulled into a peaceful mood, and then BAM it goes all Death Metal on yo ass.
However, the quiet sections also have an emotional impact and sincerity, that is way heavier than all manner of blastbeats and manic screaming.
Heavy in the way that a Nick Cave album or the Cure's "Disintegration" is heavy. Nevertheless, their headbangy sections are still mondo kickass.

My point is, that blasting away at 240 bpm all the time gets really boring really fast, unless it's Hate Eternal or Nile, but even they slow it down every now and again. But that doesn't that we don't have kids who just want full-on grind all the time. I say let 'em :p

EDIT: Holy pretentiousness Batman! Oh well, I made my point.
