Looks like an FPS puzzler using the HL2 engine. Looks goddamn awesome, and the trailer is kinda humorous.
-
Holy crap! I predict brain melting . . . in the best possible way. Also, is it just my imagination or does that portal gun also double as a gravity gun?
-
I think you can catch things and hold them, but it's not a "pick things up from the other side of the room" deal.
-
Ok yeah.
I'll be owning that one.
-
holy infinity, batman!
my brain almost melted just watching the trailer. that has to be one of the most original games i've seen in a long time.
fantastic
-
My friend sent me the link this morning, and I have to say that it looks really cool.
The game seems really interesting, yet will probably be really, really hard.
Really
-
INFINITE TUNNEL IS INFIIIIIIIIINITE.
-
dammmn! That looks so fun. Honestly thats such a cool mechanic that they really don't need the HL2 graphics, I wonder if they'll release it for DS or PSP? Doubtful yes.. but I can dream can't I!
-
They don't need half life 2 graphics but I don't think the psp or the ds could handle the engine required to do what that game does.
-
It's the engine that makes the game. Anyone can do graphics but it takes an excellent engine to make a trully great game.
Apparently it's going to be packaged with HL2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress.
I can't wait.
-
I can already tell that the first four hours after I install it are going to be me and the infinite portal. Its like sex positions in Gmod, it just has to be done.
-
i just watched the trailer again and i'd just like to re-iterate how stoked i am.
edit: i knew that wasnt spelled right
-
Re-iterate?
When I first heard about it, I wasn't quite sure how good it may be. But the trailer certainly appeased me. Looks like the kind of game where I'll be buckling down for a while to enjoy.
And TF2?!? Yes!
-
!

Yeah, just look at Battlefield 2. Gameplay is fun but the engine is sub-par at best.
-
The engine is okay with me. Took me running SLI before I could say that, though.
-
That looks like so much fun...! WANT!
-
Wait a minute...
Creating an intriguing new gameplay mechanic and USING IT TO ACTUALLY ADVANCE GAMEPLAY? The fuck?
My FPS-addled brain cannot quite fathom this concept. Isn't this supposed to be for one-shot puzzles or something...?
-
I imagine this to be some kind of gamemode or only used in a level or two orso. An entire game ? Must be insane

Well, the gravity gun has already set something of a precedent for that kind of thing.
Also, there was a more primitive form of portal gun in Opposing Force. Sure, it didn't have nearly the same kind of application that appears to be in this new game, but you could use it to quickly zap away a nasty monster, or to teleport to another planet for a quick top-up, and then back into the fray.

Advanced preview :)
Valve bought the rights to the game.
-
That is, simply put, AMAZING.

The thing you must remember about Portal, is that the entire game is a series of rooms. Each room contains one puzzle. Once you beat one puzzle, you proceed to the next room, where another puzzle awaits you, albeit a more difficult one.
That being said, I have high hopes for Portal. The concept behind it is innovative, but it's not a game you can say "it'll be interesting to find out what kind of applications it will have in the game", because it IS the game. It is like calling the ability to drop blocks in Tetris a game-altering ability: without this feature, the game would not exist.
Valve got a lot of feedback about the HL2:E1 episodic content, and I think a good percentage of the playerbase said that, for $20USD, 4 or 5 hours of extra Half-Life 2 gameplay was worth it, but only just. Valve is making up for it now, by releasing both HL2:E2 (which is rumored to be twice as long as E1), Portal (an experimental single-player FPS based on the Source engine), AND Team Fortress 2 (the long-awaited sequel to Team Fortress {Classic}), in the same package, for the same price as HL2:E1.
[HL2:E2, Portal, and TF2] for $20. Now that is a deal.

This makes me want to go back into gaming so bad.
HOLY SHIT.
-
I'm not a fps fan at all but that games looks fecking amazing.
-
Those of you who really can't wait can download the weapon as an add-on for G-Mod:

:)
-
So I understand that this is going to be a sort of solve the puzzle type of game, is there any word on whether valve plan to make a full-on FPS with this portal thing as a game mechanic?
HL2: E3, make portal right behind enemy, pick up toilet with gravity gun, toilet headshot through the portal!
Hell, something like that would be worth as much as they wanted to charge for it.
-
At this point, Valve has denied any other games using the portal weapon. However, the Portal game packaged in Ep.2 has been clearly labeled an "experimental FPS", and I would imagine that, based on user response, they might introduce it into other games.

Sweet. I'm already saving up for the PS3, and this would just be icing on the cake. Portals looks amazing. I am SO looking forward to it along with the HL2 episodes and TF2.

Wow. I need to take a sudafed.

Seriously, no game is worth buying that system for. If you give them your money then you're only encouraging Sony and telling them that they basically can't do anything wrong. The PS3 is an awful awful idea.
-
A) FF12 is coming to the PS2, not the PS3.
B) Bioshock is an X-Box 360 game, not a PS3 game.
C) There are already 2 Dragon Quest games announced for the Wii, one being a launch game.
Supposedly Assassin's Creed is gonna be a 360 game as well. And I don't care if FF13 is the best game in the series, I will not pay 600 dollars to play it, not to mention that according to a Sony exec, the games might cost 70-100 freakin' dollars apiece.
Like est said, buying a PS3 is telling Sony it's OK to charge 600 dollars for a console and even more than 60 for games, which I flat-out refuse to do. Hell, I think even 400 is a little steep, which is why I still don't have a 360 yet.
-
Also, that TF2 clip is frickin' sweet
-
$60/game for a 360? I'll stick with my PC and its massive back-catalog, 0-$40 games, and ability to do *productive* stuff every once in a while...
-
OH WOW I MADE A TYPO I MUST OBVIOUSLY BE IGNORANT ABOUT THE MOST POPULAR SERIES OF THE GENRE I HAPPEN TO THINK MYSELF AN EXPERT OF WOW
The way you pointed that out was needlessly condescending.
Also...
Fuck you very much (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/bioshock/index.html)
And, the Dragon Quest games coming for the Wii are spin-offs.
As for the price tag, I don't think $600 is that bad. It's about the price of a computer. Sure, it doesn't do as much as a computer, but it is built specifically for video games. Instead of paying mounds of cash for upgrades for my computer, I can play one flat price and be happy that I can actually play video games without having to worry about video cards and sound cards and the like. The price evens out, even if the games are more expensive.
I believe games are an art form. Saying that games aren't worth this price, which isn't as bad as everyone says, belittles them. Comments like that send video games back to the age where they were a mindless diversion that only existed as a way to pass the time. I find as much enjoyment and satisfaction from playing a great video game as a great movie or great book. I get more than just momentary entertainment when I pay $600 for the PS3. I get something else. Something I can't really explain very well.
I honestly believe that the PS3 is the best system and worth the money. I don't feel I should have to defend my decision.
-

Without even playing it. Wow.
-
I liked everything Merkava said up until that last line. i was very much in aggreement until that point. and i didnt even fully disagree with that point. however, that does seem to be setting your sights slightly high doesnt it? i think the ps3 will be great too, but i'm not ruling out the chance that it will suck hard. i will almost certainly buy one, but to put that much faith into into it sight unseen is a little too optimistic for me.
-
Enough.
Stop.
This is not a thread about the PS3
This is a thread about thinking with portals
Remember - if at first you don't succeed, you fail, and the test will be terminated.
-
Oh YES.
I would pay $20 for this, let alone Episode 2, Portal AND TF2.
There's actually a SWEP weapon out there for Garry's Mod that's basically a poor man's portal, and a map that's supposed to replicate the trailer. It's good, sure, but nothing like what the trailer depicted.
I will be waiting for this!
-
Remember - if at first you don't succeed, you fail, and the test will be terminated.
I think that warrants a sig.
I also think we're long overdue for a good puzzle game, and that Portal is going to rock thy world.
-
The way you pointed that out was needlessly condescending.
I think you misinterpreted what I was saying. I honestly thought you were talking about FF12, not FF13. If I came off as insulting, it was not my intention.
The PS3 will be more or less exactly the same as the 360 in terms of specs, you're paying the extra 200 dollars for the goddamn Blu-Ray player that I couldn't care less about. If Sony had the good judgement to make the player a peripheral (like Microsoft is doing with the HD-DVD drive), I might have waited until the PS3 launch to make my decision. But I already have a 360 and will buy a Wii, but I have utterly no desire to buy a PS3 unless the price drops DRASTICALLY after launch, and it will still need to have enough great, exclusive games before I am convinced. BioShock is coming to the 360 at the same time (which therefore is not advantageous to the PS3 in any way), I don't care about MGS, and I'm sure as hell not paying 660 dollars for FF13. I don't care if it's better than every other game in the series combined. And since a new Dragon Quest game hasn't even been announced yet, who's to say it'll be a Sony exclusive? I still don't see why the fact that the Wii DQ games are spinoffs should in any way detract from them. If they're good games, then what difference does it make that they're not part of the 'official lineage' of the series?
Some insider stuff I've read makes it sound like Sony's online platform is very half-assed as well. In short, I see nothing that makes the PS3 better than either of the other two consoles and certainly nothing that makes it worth the insane price. If you've made your decision already, I won't bother degenerating into a meaningless flame war with you, but I think it's a bad choice.
-
guys, seriously, take it to PM or another thread, I'm pretty certain perople are getting sick about the PS3-related flaming.
Now KNOCK IT OFF.
This is especially aimed at you, Merkava. Chill out, and take the blue pill before you have an aneurysm.
oh, and I wish I could take credit for the "If at first..." quote, but it's actually directly from the full-length Portal trailer from E3, which I note hasn't actually made a full appearance in this thread yet.

I thought I heard that quote in the trailer that was linked in est's opening post. Well, regardless of who said it, it's still a great piece of Inspirational Advice for us all.
-

Woah, what? I was just responding to comments made towards me. I had no idea writing a long post with all of your thoughts constitutes a crossing into aneurysm territory.
BUT AGAIN SORRY ALL I WAS DOING WAS TRYING TO END THE CURRENT CONVERSATION WITH THE LAST POST ANYWAY LETS GET BACK TO PORTALS
The game looks amazing. I just can't wait. This may be my most anticipated part of the whole package.
