I've been listening to some what I believe to be noise rock, and I'm looking for some more stuff along the same vein
examples:
Blur - Bugman
Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945
Lightning Bolt
I dunno, I guess I just like the sound of over distorted guitars.
-
Smegma.
-
Black Dice
Rapeman (you really have to check them out, especially their ZZ Top cover)
mclusky
The Jesus Lizard
Big Black
XBXRX
Guitar Wolf (in case you're listening to them, turn down your volume or it will ruin your equipment. Seriously. Their records don't comply with standards and are just too loud.)
Technically, one could also call bands such as The Locust noise. But that's stretching things a bit.
-
Besides fully endorsing all of the bands previously mentioned I must add the following bands-they are roughly arranged in order of the amount of distortion used and how shit-fi their recordings are:
Sonic Youth
The Jesus and Mary Chain (Just the Psychocandy album)
Suicide
The "No New York" compilation
The Cherubs
Loop
Flipper
The Psychic Paramount
Yellow Swans
Skullflower
Sightings
Monoshock
The Futurians
Gang Wizard
Magik Markers
-
White Mice

Arab on Radar.....
lots and lots of Arab on Radar.
I second pretty much everything else mentioned.
-
Dazzling Killmen
-
Maybe some Scratch Acid, Butthole Surfers, and Six Finger Satellite
-
There's this new Grizzly Bears album that's kind of noise-ish.
I don't know if it really counts but you should listen to it anyways.
It's called Yellow House.
-
french toast??
also, a lot of math rock is pretty noisy.
-
Yeah. While it's not "noise-rock", per say, I think you would really enjoy Drive Like Jehu. Get Yank Crime.
-
Yes. ... Actually, this applies to everyone. Drive Like Jehu is condensed awesome. Get Yank Crime, preferrably the Swami re-release (that has the Bullet Train To Vegas EP as well).
If we're talking noisy math, let me add:
Shellac
North of America (This Is Dancefloor Numerology is one hell of a noisy album)
Early 31Knots
Rodan
The Plan
-
I'll third Jehu and also add the name of Polvo, my personal math-rock favorite. I advise everyone to check out the "Celebrate the New Dark Age" EP.
-
Technically, one could also call bands such as The Locust noise. But that's stretching things a bit.
Whaaaaa...?
They're not noise "rock," but they're certainly noise of a sort.
-
Ruins is always noisey.
-
No, only 95% of the time.
-

Whaaaaa...?

Yeah, I tried to limit myself to bands that play something closer to "rock", which is why I didn't include The Locust. Of course, looking at it now, Black Dice don't really fit either in this case...
Also, I second Polvo.

I thought Living All Over Me was what kick-started the Noise Rock genre. At least that's what I've heard. I'm probably wrong.

is my choice album for noise rock, not that I know that much about it.
I heard the Dead C were good but I haven't listened to that much.
-
You know what? Check out Dinosaur Jr. regardless. They're just good.
Listen to this man.
Also. Mission of Burma.
-
Sonic Youth is probably the greatest noise band ever. There earlier stuff is much less melodic and much more avant-garde. Though Daydream Nation is their best album and one of the best albums of all time, their early stuff, such as EVOL and EPs such as Confusion is Sex and Bad Moon Rising, are some really good nosie rock.
Ditto on the Big Black and Jesus Lizard nominations. They`re the kings of industrial, and Steve Albini is nicknamed W.B.A.--World`s Biggest Asshole.
For more melodic stuff but still equally noisy, go with Psychocandy by the Jesus and Mary Chain, Painful by Yo La Tengo, and Loveless by My Bloody Valentine (arguably the greatest noise rock album ever). Also, while not technically noise-rock New Day Rising by Hüsker Dü is an amphetamine-fueled forgotten classic.

I think it's more along the lines of "I need my penis in Kim Gordon".
-
Wolf Eyes
Liars
Sonix Youth
Boredoms
Lightning Bolt
certain Hella songs
Fantomas
That's what I consider noise rock.
While Fantomas aren't exactly noise rock, they are pretty awesome, and you should listen to them.
-
Coldplay.
-
HEY!
I JUST HAD DINNER MAN
GEEZ
-
Best response I could've hoped for!
You can move on now.
-
Also. Mission of Burma.
Soooo good live.
-
Regarding Sonic Youth, if you enjoy their Confusion is Sex-era material, see if you can track down the "Live in Venlo" album. It is awesome, albeit with shitty sound quality (not that that's a big deal for early Sonic Youth).
-
There's a pretty awesome Japanese noise/spaz-rock band called Melt Banana. Also this 2-piece band from Japan that are now located in Minneapolis called the Birthday Suits- the guitarist is also in another noise/punk band called Sweet JAP. Okay, and to go on about Japanese bands for a while, if you're into pretty extreme noise, you could check out Acid Mothers Temple, or their side-project, Mong Hang (not as extreme, more 'tribal' sounding).
-
Yeah, Mission of Burma are amazing live. I just saw them at Pitchfork Festival, and they had twice as much energy as any other band, most of which were half their age. Liars were awesome too, and I second the Wolf Eyes recommendation.
-
It's pretty phenomenal that they can be so tenacious live, since Roger Miller has acute tinnitis. I mean MoB is loud enough as it is...
-
Yeah, I heard a rumor that MoB have played live gigs with Miller behind a transparent sound shell, but nothing like that was in evidence at Pitchfork. Only really loud yummy noises. . .
-
I haven't heard very much of Melt Banana, but I like them.
-
I've come to realize that all I ever really do here is chime in with local New York bands.
So I figure why break form tradition?
No One and the Somebodies:
http://www.noats.com
http://www.myspace.com/nooneandthesomebodies
also a Japanese bands named My Way My Love is pretty fucking awesome...

Also definitely check out Fragile Porcelain Mice. Brilliance.

This thread has pretty much the best listing of bands I've ever seen on this forum. Almost all of them make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I'd recommend getting some Orthrelm in your life. Everybody needs some Orthrelm and if you get the split with Trencher then you've got some excellent casio sort-of-grind action as well (they're kind of like the UK's answer to The Locust. Not copyists or anything, they're just in a similar vein and about as good). I'm also saddened that this thread has gone on as long as it has without anybody mentioning Unsane or just recommending buying pretty much anything that was ever released on Amphetamine Reptile. Alright, so it's not all great but you won't go too far wrong.
-
seconding Melt Banana, fucking awesome band.
also, Neon Blonde, and Erase Erata's Nightlife album are pretty cool.
I can't say anything about there other albums though as Nightlife is the only one I've heard.
-
I really wouldn't call Sonic Youth a noise band.
bands I'd call noise:
Hair Police
Wolf Eyes
Viki
whitehouse
The Punks
Metalux
Witchypoo
The Replikants
Men's Recovery Project
Rah Brahs
Black Dice
and maybe:
Hella
Lightning Bolt
Throbbing Gristle
Japanther (sometimes)
The thing is, I don't think noise bands usually use real instruments in their music, mose of the noise comes from using drum machines and effect pedals and weird home made noisey mechanisms and stuff.
Sonic Youth, Lightning Bolt, and Hella all use instruments, but I'd call Lightning Bolt and Hella noise because of the chaotic sound they have. Sonic Youth wrote really simple Ramones-y/Stooge-y pop songs and played feedback over them for the most part.
Wolf Eyes played at my school, and while I haven't been to many noise shows, I was sort of underwhelmed. Apparently they were huge dicks and asked for a lot of money too.
I must recommend Troubleman Mix Tape on Troubleman Unlimited Records for noise stuff. It's a two disc set with mostly noise and a few sort of random things included (Sean Na Na w/ Lois?), but everything is so awesome it doesn't matter at all.
-
Boredoms and OOIOO!
-
I've tried listening to a few of these bands, and they seem to come off to me as somewhat flat and listless, not really heavy or rocking or anything. I quite like power electronics though, anyone suggest any noise bands more like, say, Whitehouse, and less like Lightning Bolt, who I thought were boring when I listened to them. Or maybe even something veering more towards, say, Earth, Electric Wizard, Sunn O))), that kind of territory.
It's not that I can't take sonic abuse, I listen to artists like Terrorfakt and Navicon Torture Technologies, and I should probably like some noise rock, it's just I dunno what.
-
Have you tried Unsane? They are both heavy and rocking, and although I like 'Scrape', their most famous song, it's by no means their best so they warrant a little more investigation than just watching the really funny video with all the skaters falling over.
Plus, noise rock is a funny term. The bands who've been mentioned so far in this thread are pretty diverse and seem to cover just about anything that can have the term 'noise' applied to it, from full-on nastiness like Whitehouse to Lightning Bolt, who're pretty conventional and catchy really. They only get nasty due to the massive volume they use, and that's getting a bit old really. Last time I saw them they were assively outclassed by DJ Scotch Egg... anyway, to wander back to the point I'd recommend checking out a few more of the bands listed here since there's a good variety. And as for something a bit noise but more in the doom vein I'd recommend Red Right Hand. Crushing band, think slow, nasty doom with brutal screamed vocals and lots of feedback. One of the most intense live acts I've ever come across.
-
oh goodness no.
though this thread's heart might be in the right place, through away every reply in it.
just listen to brainbombs or the hospitals and advance from there. if you're interested in something else, then go on from there as well.
-
I really wouldn't call Sonic Youth a noise band.
I agree with this, mainly concerning their main albums (although they certainly like and use noise). Also, I've never understood why Confusion is Sex is considered so inaccessible. Bad Moon Rising, maybe, but my experience is that Confusion is Sex is pretty easy to get into, and I don't think it's half as abrasive, low-fi, or scary as people think it is. It's just a great album.
Any way, I must admit I don't really have any noise albums. I do have some that are noisy, but I'm also more picky than some people about what I'd call noise.
-
Also, while not technically noise-rock New Day Rising by Hüsker Dü is an amphetamine-fueled forgotten classic.
New Day Rising is excellent, but a lot of the band's earlier works fit the noise-rock label better--Land Speed Record does so to the point of being almost unlistenable. Hardcore punk often lends itself to that.
Keeping with Mould and company, Metal Circus is a great example of more enjoyable (and melodic) ear-shredding. And Zen Arcade remains one of the greatest albums ever.
-
I like New Day Rising better than Zen Arcade, myself.
