So. A lot of my friends with good-or-similar-to-me music taste keep ranting about Mogwai, how good they are, how they are going to see them soon, how they just went and saw them and how good they were, and so on.
So I'd like to check them out, see what I'm missing. They seem to have a lot of releases. Any ideas on where to start?
-
Supposedly the best place to start would be at the beginning, namely Mogwai Young Team, it made instrumental rock cool again I heard.
The My Father My King EP is also supposed to be excellent.
-
Young Team is a really good place to start, as well as their latest album 'Mr.Beast'.
-
Seconding Young Team as first Mogwai album. And make sure to follow it with Come On Die Young.
And then you are going to check out Shipping News (Save Everything and Flies The Fields). I am not recommending it, just do it. This is for your own good.
-
I think the best place to start Mogwai is with Happy Songs With Happy People, it's veru good yet still accesible. Young Team is better, but it's a very long album and it may be harder to get into at first. My favourite thing by them is My Father My King (as Praesarpium Machinarum suggested), but it's only one very long song, which may not be the best investment. Some of Mogwai's mid period albums are more restrained, and some (ot me) find them less interesting.
In my opinion, it should go:
1.- Happy Songs For Happy People
2.- Young Team
3.- Mr Beast
4.- My Father My King
5.- Ten Rapid
6.- EP+6
7.- Rock Action
8.- Come On Die Young
-
I agree with E.Spaceman.
Young Team is an awesome record with my favourite Mogwai track ever, Mogwai Fear Satan.
I've seen Mogwai in concert once. Batshit loud, but they put on a killer set.
-
I've seen them too, they opened with Mogwai Fear Satan, which was great, but the highlight was My Father My King, 25+ minutes of AWESOME
-
Young Team was the first Mogwai album I heard and it blew me away. Actually, it was the first Post-Rock album I ever heard.
-
Wow, they opened with Mogwai Fear Satan? Awesome.
They closed with it when I saw them.
-
Well, I don't mind long albums and am not unused to things being a bit difficult or inaccessible, so i might give Young Team a go.
They come to France in October, so I have until then to go "HOLY CRAP AWESOME" and go see them.
Anyway, thanks everyone! I'll try and track the album down and, uh, maybe report back or something.

Just dont forget to listen to Shipping News too, if you liked Mogwai. I'm so pissed that almost no one knows this band.
-
I will Second the recommendation fo their newest album. It's nice and Heavy, plus the ifrst track is so good it makes my heart implode.
Yeah, Heartplodesome.

Which album would you reccomend?
-
This has been said before, but I'm going to summarize my thoughts.
If you like heavy rock: Mr. Beast
If you want something accessible: Happy Songs for Happy People
If you are patient and can appreciate something that is not accessible: Young Team
I personally do not like Young Team, but it seems to be popular enough that I suggest it to other people.
Edit: On second thought, skip the albums, go to the live show. Mogwai is AWESOME live.

Seconded, I brought some friends who didn't know Mogwai even existed to a concert, and they thanked me for the next few weeks. The concerts, or at least the ones I went to, where incredible.
Edit: To E.Spaceman, 'Flies the Fields' is a good place to start in my opinion.

Mogwai is one of the better indie bands that I've heard, but that isn't really saying a whole lot. I think the whole crescendo thing is a bit gimmicky sometimes, and at first listen (the song was 'Like Herod', as I recall), they just bored me to tears. But I think that was just a poor recommendation, because I've heard some of their work since and liked it more. I really couldn't say much about their discography, as I've only heard scattered bits and pieces of it.
-
I found Young Team more accessible than Happy Songs.
I am tired of talking about Mogwai now. Let's talk about Shipping News.

No! the Satan fearing must be done!
Just saw em myself recently. Nice and lound and a pretty cool setlist. but afterwards I felt, unforfilled? I don't know. I was expecting something at least as fancy a Sigor Ros show and all I got was a basic rock show without the witty banter. Don't get me wrong, it was still great. But I listen to so much Mogwai that I just expected MORE. Does this make me an arsehole or was I just far to sober?
Fine then Shipping News it is. Ive only got Flies the Fields and I like it. Not as many Ups-and-downs as most Post-Rock but still goodly. How's there other stuff compair?

Seeing Sigur Rós live and then expecting another band to top that is the height of unfairness, I think.

Which album would you reccomend?
Flies the Fields, their last album from 2005. And Save Everything, their first album. They're both pretty different, but they're my two favorites.
If youre looking for somthing like Mogawi's Young Team, I'd recommend Flies the Fields.

I dunno, I was pretty shocked when parts of the ceiling began to crack from the volume.

I saw Sigur Rós recently and had the exact same feeling. A few songs really hit home, but all in all, I prefer local 100- people punk shows.

I borrowed Youg Team off a post-rockin' friend today.
Holy fuck. Mogwai Fear Satan is amazing.
-
Just downloaded Flies the Fields, thanks for the recommendation; awesome stuff.
-
^ Best. Avatar. Ever. Tintin FTW
As for Mogwai....
They're my favorite post rock band (although I've only heard a few seeing as how I'm still new to the genre) And as for albums I'd defnitley get Young Team first.

Can't speak for how good Mogwai shows are (heard they're amazing), but I saw Sigur Ros live in May and they blew my fucking mind.
I downloaded a bunch of Mogwai a really long time ago, but only started to get into them when I bought their Government Commissions CD. I then proceeded to Happy Songs for Happy People, and I have loved both CD's to death. I have dl'ed copies of Young Team and Come On Die Young, and I need to buy copies of both. The only album I'm not really fond of is Rock Action.
-
Guys, I bought Rock Action for a dollar like two weeks ago.
A dollar.
-
Nice.
Rock Action was the first Mogwai record I heard, I have a soft spot for it. But I don't listen to instrumental music none too much.

i hate you!!
personally and at the moment i like 10 rapid even more than young team, because it has my favourite mogwai song, "summer".

The only Mogwai I have heard was on their Myspace page and I quite liked it. I keep considering buying one of their albums.
