hey
i know its been forever since i wrote anything on here. im sure by now most of you assume the band isnt happening anymore since there are no shows, no work on a new album, etc. well. i wanted to let you know that your assumptions are correct. we decided to stop doing the band... actually we decided that almost a year ago. we finished off our scheduled tour dates because there were good people working for us who relied on us to make a living and buy christmas presents and pay rent etc. we couldnt just cancel everything and leave them out to dry... plus i think we wanted to see if we would reconsider after being out on the road. our label was really hoping that we would change our minds, so they asked us to keep quiet about the decision for at first. well, its been quite awhile now and we are still very sure the band wont happen again, so i guess its time to say something.
we started as a punk band with pop aspirations and we met every goal we set for ourselves. a few weeks ago, the album finally went gold in canada and that was the final mark i really wanted to reach.. it was my goal to see how big we could become without ever compromising or changing what we did right from the start... and now i know. we did way more than i ever expected and i like to think the fans (you?) enjoyed it as much as we did.... watching us sneak our way onto network tv, big festivals and sports arenas... playing music that most people assumed only belonged in basements and dirty rock clubs. we played our first show in a living room on long island for about 12 people and played our last in the calgary saddledome for 12,000. ha! what more could i have ever asked for? ive been in lots of punk bands over the last 15 years and i played every basement, squat, hole and alley from here to eastern europe. dfa79 was the first time i ever really played on a stage, yet i really didnt change what i was doing from what id been doing in the past... hell i was even using the same amplifiers! i never would have imagined that the wall of noise i love so much could have come this far. to see my silly elephant trunk idea become so popular... im sure its the greatest piece of graphic design ill ever do.
over the last 3 years of touring, sebastien and i had grown apart to such an extent that the only real time we spoke was just before we would play and during interviews. we both changed so much that the people we were by the end of it, probably wouldnt have been friends if they were to meet for the first time again. its a totally normal function of growing up. like how your high school bf/gf that meant so much to you would probably be the last person you would date at 30, ya know? thats where we got to. its not sad. it would be more sad if we stopped changing and growing and kept playing the same songs for 40 years like the rolling stones. for me that would be a nightmare.
thank you so much for your support from beginning to end. thanks ache records for giving us that first 325 dollars and thanks last gang for taking us the rest of the way. thanks to everyone who came out to our shows, wrote letters just to say hi, baked cakes and made your own t-shirts. i kept everything you gave me. thanks so much to the kids who came really early to see us when were were opening for bigger bands... that meant so much to me. i hope i have been a positive example and not a bad influence and i really want you to know that when you stop me on the street and i dont know what to say, its not because i dont appreciate you, its just not something ill ever really get used to.
thanks again.

First Sleater-Kinney and now this. Fuck sakes.

goddammit
What happened to the second album(s)? They must have had a few songs done...
-
Am I a bad person for being happy they've stopped making music?
-
This saddens me, as well as Arthur Lee's death.
However there is one good music news today. Johnny Marr is now a member of Modest Mouse.

Don't be a fucking asshole, you fucking asshole.
I enjoyed DFA79's music. I only have one of their albums, You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, and rather like it. I enjoyed their set at last year's Intonation Festival.
It's always sad to see a band stop playing, especially when you enjoy them.
Cheers.
-
Yeah, I just never really liked them at all...
Sad to see a band stop like this but, meh.
-
Damn shame, that band was one day away from retIrment...
I'm sad to see them just for the insanity of their gigs if nothing else. Girls were having 'punch eachother in the face' contests. in circle pits.
-
This is news is thread worthy, but the fact that the smiths' guitarrist has written and performed songs for the new modest mouse album isn't?
I'm gonna use this thread to talk about modest mouse.
Hasn't Brock written all the songs up until this point?
I don't know what to expect now.
TisLDHFSWNTTA made me see...well...a long drive home in the dark with nothing to think about.
TLCW made me see shapes and headaches.
TMAA made me see stars and oceans and little fishies and baren landscapes and super novas and explosions and deserts and antartica at night and...lots of stuff.
GNFPLBN made me see fields of tall grass and quiet roads with bunnies hopping along them.
What will WWDBTSES make me see? I don't have a clue! Not knowing what to expect is exciting, but if I see the smiths I'll be sad.

Nobody said that. But while I just couldn't be bothered to care about the next Modest Mouse album or Johnny Marr*, I thought DFA1979's only proper album was phenomenal. Plus, they put on one of my favourite live shows, so in summary, I guess what I'm trying to say is get your own thread, captain jerkface.
*if you like them, good for you. I don't love them, but I don't have anything against them either.
-
I have a phobia of making threads you insensitive jerk. You smell like poop.
*Don't take any of this seriously guys.

I'M TRYING NEW SOAP OKAY
I GOT A PRESCRIPTION FOR IT
WAY TO DRAW ATTENTION TO IT

Sorry man. Makeup and makeout?
-
It sucks when a band you like splits up, but by the wording of that letter I'd say it sounds like they're doing the right thing. It really sucks when bands whose members hate eachother guts force themselves to grind out an album. I'm also fully in favor of bands splitting up after they've done what they set out to accomplish. DFA 1979 may have been shortlived, but they'll be better remembered for it in the long run.
-

makeouts!
i second opium. they changed, though sad, it happens a lot. and it's awesome that they met their goals before they broke up. but...it was just time to end. bye '79. we liked you.
-
Also, their set up wasn't exactly great for musical progression. The put out great stuff but I really couldn't see them doing another album. Now they can go on to new projects which may or may not be good.
-
I am quite saddend by this I enjoyed DFA1979 quite a bit ESPICALLY their live shows (which I've seen twice) I do have to agree though that I couldn't see a second album being all that good, I had high hopes though. Oh well.
-
this is terribly saddening.
but doesn't Jesse (the bassist) have a new band MSTRKRFT?
oh well. they won't compare to DFA1979.
-
i is sad.
-
Aww ):
-
Am I a bad person for being happy they've stopped making music?
No because that would make me a bad person too.
:)
-
I liked Woman, Machine, but I haven't really cared about them since I listened to that album the first time.
Sad to see any band stop, but...meh.
-
I loved their First Album, and Woman, Machine so its really sad to see them go. I hope they dont stop doing Producing work, they rock the hell out of that.
This will be another one of the bands on my list that I wish I had seen live before they broke up or went on a more then 3 year Hiatus. Like Godspeed, Granddaddy, and now Death From above and Broken Social Scene. (Ok Ive seen BSS but I want to see them again really badly =( )
-
Hiatus. Broken Social Scene
I just heard about BSS going on hiatus....(yes, i'm lame you hipsters) Not to be shamelessly derailing the thread, but do you think this means they will BREAK UP?!?!?!
*Disintegrates*
Now...sorry, people, get back to morning DFA1979.
-
but do you think this means they will BREAK UP?!?!?!
We can only hope.
-
We can only hope.
You LOVE Broken Social Scene, and you know it, and it hurts.
No, seriously, you like them, right? No? What?!?
RUN
-
didn't really care much for this band...just not my thing, i guess. but i know how much it bums me out whenever bands i DO like break up, so i can't say i'm happy to hear it...
plus, it just sucks when you go from being in a band and making music to not doing any of that.
hopefully those guys go on to making other music that they enjoy, and can make all you '79 fans happy again.
-
We can only hope.

No, seriously, you like them, right? No? What?!?

Most of the BSS fans I know like it when someone bashes BSS. Makes 'em feel superior.
:)
-
How would a collective break up, exactly?
-
It's like heaven's gate, but with less Nike sneakers and jumpsuits.
-
Simple: Drew breaks his neck trying to fellate himself onstage, and Leslie, Amy, Emily, and Jason's all pursue solo careers. Wait . . . we're basically half-way there already.
