We've all had a friend introduce us to a band that we would have never found out about normally that grew on us, or so I imagine. :O DISCUSS.
I started listening to The Strokes a lot because a friend of mine said "This stuff grows on you, man." And at first, didn't really care for them outside of a few songs, but now, like... I easily consider them in my top 5 to listen to.
-
one fo my friends got me into both Coco Rosie and Yo La Tengo, for this I am eternally in her debt.
-
The Dresden Dolls.
-
probably 90% of my favorite bands are ones that me and an online buddy of mine have shared with each other, don't really keep track of which went which way.
-
Ummm....Evanescence
My friends don't have particularly good taste in music. I get most of my recommendations from the internet.
-
that guy wasn't your friend.
i guess my first girlfriend made me listen to sonic youth.
that was quite a revelation at the age of 16.
I'm confused.
Guessing you don't like the band?
SOMEONE EXPLAIN I AM DENSE PLZ
-
Neutral Milk Hotel, she told me they were amazing and I was interested, and then I heard the king of carrot flowers and I stole the cd from her.
-
Grateful Dead and Gang of Four. (same friend). He smokes much of the Mary-Jane. Which leads to musical tastes that I sometimes am wary of. Those turned out to be amazing, though.
-
Broken Social Scene
-
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Stephen Malkmus, a couple others too I think.
-
Summoning. I heard Dul Guldur in he's car. Ended up taking it home and listening too it for about a week straight.
-
Liquid Tension Experiment: I ended up discussing music with a friend of mine and I mentioned that I liked post-rock. He asked me to explain what post rock was so I did to the best of my ability, he then told me that since I like post-rock and metal I should like Liquid Tension Experiment.
Marilyn Manson: At first I didn't like anything about Marilyn Manson. After spending some time with a few of my friends and actually giving his music a chance I found that I liked it. I then went on to find more of is work and learn a little bit more about the guy himself. Now I have a lot of respect for the guy.
The Strokes: After seeing the reaction to this mention earlier I was hesitent to mention this particular band. However in the timeline that has accompanied my musical taste they played an important part. I was coming out of a phase that was comprised of bands like Slipknot and Linkin Park (I know, nothing alike but bear with me). After listening to the Strokes a bit I decided to go out and look for other bands like them and also when people would say "They sound just like X band" I would go and find songs by X band.
Flogging Molly: I remember sitting there talking with a friend a long time ago and he was talking about he just want to an awesome show. So of course I ask who he went to see and he replied with Flogging Molly. I can't remember exactly how he described them but I just remember me saying "Ok, I have to hear this."
A good portion of my current musical collection is made up of bands that have been mentioned on this forum. Damn, I'm impressionable.
-
my bass guitar teacher introduced me to fugazi after i asked to learn some minor threat. i think that was the single biggest event in my music listening history.
-
About the only ones for me (I end up finding a lot of my own music and hooking other people on it) are Sonata Arctica (from my brother) and Illnath (from Trollstormur). However, I've gotten my brother hooked on just about everything I listen to, and multiple friends/acquaintances of mine hooked on Nightwish (who are nice and accessible).
-
I dunno... probably something khar either a. reccommended or b. mentioned. not many of m'meat world friends listen to metal, and if they do, it's because of me and I already know all the bands they do.
-
My metalhead buddy got me into, among others: Iron Maiden, Arsis, Atheist, Buckethead, Cathedral, Death, Evergrey, Exodus, Iced Earth, Slough Feg, Nevermore, Overkill, and Testament. A bunch of those are among my favorite bands now. I kinda used to be one of those 'Nothing good has come out since the 1970s' kids. I didn't even seriously get into music until about a year ago or so.
-
I have a friend that is constantly listening to Rush. I don't mean he liked them a lot, I mean he would constantly be listening to Rush. All the time. Everytime I got in the car with him. Everytime I hung out with him. I never heard him play any other band for quite a long time after I first met him.
The point is, I thought they sounded a bit shit, and I deliberatly didn't listen to any of their stuff outside of those snippets, simply to spite him. Then I wound up moving in with the dude, and ripped all his CDs onto my computer. Eventually 2112 came on random one night when I was stoned out of my mind, and I spent the next few days listening to the Rush catalogue over and over again.
Actually, this guy got me into a lot of great stuff. I wouldn't be listening to Maiden, Sabbath, or Spocks Beard if it weren't for him either, so he's done me well I reckon.
-
A metalhead friend of mine got me into Arch Enemy and Blind Guardian.
Another friend of mine got me all into seattle grunge. Mother Love Bone for teh winz!
But I gotta say, I am eternally grateful to the person who introduced me to the Eels.
-
Actually, everybody I know in meatlife has shit taste.
So, I guess my favourite band that has been recommended would be things that people on here have sent me.
Three posters in particular.
Tommy, Gryff and Red. (manda).
Thanks you guys! I think. Some of the stuff is really infectious.
-
A friend got me into Soft Machine.
-
My brother got me into both Pantera and Megadeth.
Actually one of the best influences on my music taste was my Dad. Although a lot of the artists I just curiously tried out rather than him going "hey listen to this".
-
One of my best friends got me into a lot of the music that I can classify as my favourite when we were in like grade 10 and 11. Jawbreaker, Wilco, Elliott Smith, Alkaline Trio to just name a few. And those are all on my top 10, so I'm quiet indebted to her.
-
If it wasn't for my ex roomie I would've never heard of Placebo...I listent o them all the time now.
-
A dude at Uni got me into Megadeth: Undoubtably the best thing i could rply with for this topic, and probably always will be.
-
Darkest Hour... "Friend" might be an overstatement, though. The guy was an ass hole, but he had great taste in music.
-
Mitch Clem got me into Fugazi and Jawbreaker.
Mitch, can you be my friend?
-
I actually needed my best friend to get me into Black Sabbath. I felt a peculiar mix of utter shame and outright elation afterwards.
-
Mitch Clem got me into Jawbreaker too. and i'm glad he did.
-
Nine Nails, by a friend, just prior to The Downward Spiral being released. I was a total rock/college radio kid at the time and just thought "ew, what is all this...nothing but noise...". But he force fed it and eventually I got it. Oddly enough, he and I are still friends, but Nine Inch Nails led me to other stuff, more abrasive, odder things, while he reverted into the rock/college radio guy.
-
I'm the most independent of my friends when it comes to new music. I tend to be the friend who gets other people into bands.
Although my boss is my friend, and the CDs she sends me to review have helped me discover some magnificent bands. Boy Kill Boy, Emmerhoff, Helalyn Flowers, Cayto, Anathallo...just a few that come to my mind.
-
Probably Daft Punk.
-
Blind Guardian, because of this I discovered that metal can be quite fun, to the point of ridiculosity because of this band, which was a bit of a revelation at the time, this lead to me listening to a lot of other awesome metal, coincedentally, he is also the friend that introduced me to webcomics. Very much indebted to him
-
I'm the most independent of my friends when it comes to new music.
ZOMG MY INDIE DONG IS HUUUUUGE.
Two that I really started to love were both introduced to me by a very good friend of mine: Aril Brikha and Theorem. Unfortunately, both of those artists only have one real CD under their belts (Theorem did a collaboration effort with a few other people but that doesn't really count as a solo effort).

ZOMG MY INDIE DONG IS HUUUUUGE.
Good for you, buddy, but I don't see how that's relevant to the thread ;-)
-
I think I most often serve this purpose for other people, in fact, one of my friends said yesterday that I was a "pioneer" for taking it upon myself to discover so much interesting music through alternative means. My parents don't have interesting tastes, and I never had any older siblings or anything like that, so I guess I did pave my own path in that sense, but it would have been nearly impossible without the internet. Thanks, internet! Aside from that, there have been quite a few bands that friends have turned me on to: Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Skinny Puppy, Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Anathema, Boards of Canada, the list goes on.
-
I'm definately the most free thinking of all my friends. The tools. They don't listen to anything interesting or exciting or original. Not like me.
I listen to ALL KINDS OF THINGS because I have electic taste!
I listen to this one band, from mtv, and that girl singer, AND this band I found on myspace. I think Bob Dylan is cool too!
See! I'm independant!
-
Hey now...
Myspace is how I found that one band that played my favorite non-licensed song from Guitar Hero (All Of This is the song title, btw).
Although I guess I owe Guitar Hero for that song?

Kai is the closest thing I have to a real friend, and he got me in to Naked City. Thanks Kai!
-
IT WILL BE SENT SATURDAY I PROMISE THIS
My friend got me into Shellac. that was pretty awesome.
-
IT WILL BE SENT SATURDAY I PROMISE THIS
Kai, I actually wasn't being sarcastic. Well, I wasn't with the Naked City part anyway.
-
No, just every time I see one of your posts I have to declare it just to make sure.
-
Well then, I think I'll just post right after you do every time you post when I'm online, from this point onwards.
-
I'm also usually the one that trys to get my friends to listen to bands and most of the time they tell me to fuck off and go listen to fucking Tool or something (sorry tool fans, they suck) but the local record store clerk has been quite helpful seeing as he was the one who REALLY got me listening to Outkast and man I love Outkast.
-
A pal got me into Hawksley Workman.
Said pal actually got me into allot of stuff, but I think I'm most grateful for Hawksley.
-
Also we pissflaps up pissflaps of FFAF's pissflaps
That is TOO good. That's right there? That's proof that there's a divine being watching over us.
-
I've gotten into a few bands, like Dispatch and They Might Be Giants solely because the guy I liked at the time mentioned them often.
-
My roomate freshman year of college listened to a lot of Saddle Creek bands which I kinda hated at the time but now love.
Another friend told me about M83 which is now one of my top groups. I probably would have found them by now but I'm glad I found out about them when I did.
-
I get most of music from my Uncle. He's got a room full of tapes and CDs his mates have beens ending him for decades. Ages ago I dug out a few that he hadn't got around to listening to, and now I owe him for Tom Waits, Billy Bragg (and meeting him), Loudon Wainwright, Sonic Youth, BDP, Sun Ra, Beefheart, The Velvets etc et bloody cetra
This man is a dangerous music obsessive.
I'm on a mission to get all my mates into jazz. Coverting the unbelievers! So far, Miles has done the trick every time.
-
if i didn't know my friend Cara, i probably wouldn't have started listening to Fugazi. and that is why i am forever grateful for her existence.
-
I listen to ALL KINDS OF THINGS because I have electic taste!
darryl, you should check this awesome site (http://lfw.org/jminc/pissflaps/http://www.rockmidgets.com/) i found!
I should be offended, but that's funny as hell. Indeed, I find the word 'pissflaps' funny as hell as it is.
'So long, pissflaps!'
I think that'll be my new sign-off from now on.
-
Most of my knowledge of music comes from this forum.
It's been a pissflaps 15 pissflaps pissflaps A pissflaps, and as pissflaps to the pissflaps to work on pissflaps pissflaps, the pissflaps us the pissflaps on why they're pissflaps "back to pissflaps" on the pissflaps. Pissflaps.
-
If I didn't give my friend "videos" on a thumb drive (he has slow tubes) he would have never loaded it up with ska music and I wouldn't be into ska.
-
if i didn't know my friend Cara, i probably wouldn't have started listening to Fugazi. and that is why i am forever grateful for her existence.
Cara is cool.
-
Most of the stuff I listen to I either hear about on the internet somewhere, or I read about it in a magazine...as far as a band that a real-world friend hooked me on, I'd have to say the paperchase...first time I ever listened to them, I seriously had nightmares, they're that scary...
-
The Go
they're some random Detroit garage rock 'friend of Jack White' band on a friend's giant DVD of music and they've got like one perfect song and i lvoe it
there's also Bob Dylan, of which no more needs to be said
-
oh yeah, i forgot that my English friend Ewan got me into Leatherface. who are kickass.
-
Thinking about it, my dad may not be my friend, but he got me into The Beatles, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, The Pogues, Queen, Blur, Eurythmics and Steve Miller.
-
My freshman roomate from Venezuela got me into Los Amigos Invisibes, an awesome latin-funk-sexy-dancing band who are actually on Luaka Bop, David Byrne's label
-
A friend of mine got me to check out The Woods, and The Slits.
I am oh so forever thankful.
-
The Long Winters. And The Eagles Of Death Metal.
-
i know i can thank my dad for most of my music tastes, but i allways figered a mojority of our parents influenced our music tastes.
but on inpaticular i will allwaysn thank him for is angus and julia stone, i owe him one for that!
-
A friend of mine just got me into an indie hip-hop/rap group called the Lab Rats, and, as a huge rock fan, it's a big deal for me to get into rap or hip-hop. Otherwise meaning they're fucking AMAZING.
-
hey there.
A couple of years back my a friend of mine made me a mix tape for my birthday, when he chucked the awfully wraped present to me and said happy birthday you white chocolate coon he told me that track three on that tape would leave a mark on me.
That track was Face of the Earth by The Dismemberment plan.
Man that did leave a mark.
They became one of my favourite bands.
unfortunately the split up but I would say if they were to reunite for a mini tour, say like slint did a year back I would totally sell my soul for one ticket to the show.
-
I've had friends turn me on to Broken Social Scene, Daft Punk, Nedelle, and a lot of others. In my attempts to show interest in a female, I've gotten further into Gorillaz, Blur, and Garbage. I try to sneak peeks into my friends' cd collections when I get the chance.
-
My girlfriend got me listening to Iron and Wine, something which I am eternally grateful for.
Another good friend recommended Sufjan Stevens.
-
My friend recommended to me Infected Mushroom. tis brilliant stuff i say.
-
A friend of mine got me in to AFI, Nine Inch Nails and NUTE. They're three of my favourite bands now so I'm pretty happy bout it.
-
Weezer about five years ago.
Another friend turned me onto the Mad Caddies, but I haven't listened to them in a while.
