I apologize if this has been done already. My top ten as of now.
1) TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
2) Destroyer - Rubies
3) Wilderness - Vessel States
4) Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
5) The Black Keys - Magic Potion
6) The Handsome Family - Last Days of Wonder
7) Thom Yorke - The Eraser
8) Jason Molina - Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go
9) Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
10) Shearwater - Palo Santo
Honorable mentions:
The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
Magnolia Electric Co. - Fading Trails
Ray LaMontagne - Til the Sun Turns Black
-
I don't care if it has been done, I'm a sucker for this shit, although I'm unsure about doing it with Dylan's new album out on Monday.
In order:
1. Twilight Singers - Powder Burns
2. Anathallo - Floating World
3. Billy Talent - II
4. The Divine Comedy - Victory For The Comic Muse
5. Hundred Reasons - Kill Your Own
6. Rod Stern - Give It Up For Rod Stern!
7. Boy Kill Boy - Civilian
8. Matisyahu - Youth
9. David Gilmour - On An Island
10. Cayto - !Blunderbuss!
Please note the lack of Arctic Monkeys.
-
These are my top 5 so far, in no particular order:
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Band of Horses - Everything All The Time
Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche
Oh No! Oh My! - Oh No! Oh My!
Arizona - Welcome Back Dear Children
-
1: Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
2: Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky
3: Placebo - Meds
4: Korpiklaani - Tales Along This Road
5: Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
And that's all the albums I can remember coming out this year I've heard. Dylan will doubtless give me six.
-
1. Man Man- Six Demon Bag (No, Seriously)
2. Danielson- Ships
3. be your own PET- S/t (I predict this opinion will be derided by British forum goers but ignored by American ones.)
4. Liars- Drums Not Dead
5. Herbert- Scale
I have not yet heard Art Brut and TV on the Radio and both of those will likely be better than half those albums. Also, Dylan obvi.
Oneida's "Happy New Year" gets the honerable mention because one of these days they're going to put out the album of the decade. This just isn't it yet.
Am I the only person who can't come to terms with Scott Walker's "The Drift" yet? I have a very aggressive love-hate relationship with that album.
DynamiteKid:
I like the lack of Arctic Monkeys. What I can't understand is the inclusion of Matisyahu.
-
Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
Peeping Tom- s/t
Placebo - Meds
I haven't heard the new Mars Volta, but I hear it's good. And Dylan will probably put out a good record. There's also a new Iron Maiden album coming, might be worthwhile but I'm not really counting on it.
-
DynamiteKid:
I like the lack of Arctic Monkeys. What I can't understand is the inclusion of Matisyahu.
It's been a lean year. Most of the albums I've anticipated so far have been disappointments, and ones I've bought from the eighties or nineties have been great.
Crossing my fingers for Dylan.

This is no excuse for having Matisyahu in your list and not having TVOTR.
-
So far all I've gotten really excited about this year are Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain and Strapping Young Lad - The New Black.
But Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Rush supposedly all have albums coming out this year, supposedly, and obviously Dylan.
-
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Ochre - Lemodie
Haven't been paying much attention to 2006 releases though. Still catching up on 2000-2004. Hopefully The Roots' album will have a place up there though.
-
I forgot that Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse was released early this year, and although it wasn't anything amazing, it was definitely enjoyable.
And frickin' ARSIS has a new album out this year, and if it's anything even close to A Celebration of Guilt, then it will definitely rival Agalloch for the top spot.
-
There is a lot of records coming out later this year that I am looking forward to - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Mastodon, Blood Brothers and so on. Also I haven't heard the new Wäldchengarten album yet. So this is by no means a definitive list. But I don't think much can rival the Under Byen album.
1. Under Byen - Samme Stof Som Stof
2. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
3. Erase Errata - Nightlife
4. The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia
5. The Black Heart Procession - The Spell
6. Matisyahu - Youth
I just realised that I haven't heard much new stuff this year - much like last year actually. Curse insufficient funds!
-
This is no excuse for having Matisyahu in your list and not having TVOTR.
I checked out that album and thought it was realllllllly boring. I'm not getting the buzz, personally.
I have a problem of knowing what years things came out, but I think so far:
Paul Simon - Surprise (Mostly because I'm a Paul Simon nut)
David Gilmour - On an Island (Didn't think I would like it, but did)
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit (The Best thing they've put out in YEARS).
The Knife - Silent Shout
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Stuff I like so far, but we'll see how I feel later:
Bob Dylan - Modern Times, Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea, The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine, The Streets - The Hardest Way to Make An Easy Living
Stuff I did not like:
Matisyahu - Youth, Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium, Thom Yorke - The Erasor, TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain, Danielson - Ships Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
-
Man, I forgot Mastodon too. The single from their new album is on their website. It sounds just like Leviathan, which is great as far as I'm concerned.
-
Hmm, I don't know if I'll have ten picks here. Anyway. Onwards.
1. Android Lust - Devour, Rise, and Take Flight
2. The Wretch - Northern Air + Passageways
3. Frontline Assembly - Artificial Soldier
4. Placebo - Meds (yeah, again)
5. Zombie Girl - Back from the Dead EPCD
6. Leather Strip - Walking on Volcanoes
7. Coil - The Remote Viewer + Black Antlers(digitally remastered)
-
So far, I've really enjoyed -
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia
Rosetta - The Galilean Satellites (any of you guys that dig Isis should ceck this band out)
Russian Circles - Enter (I liked them way before Jeph mentioned them in a QC newspost, do I get extra credit?)
Slayer - Christ Illusion (c'mon, it's freaking Slayer!)
Zao - The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here
The Paperchase - Now You Are On Of Us
Envy - Insomniac Doze
I'm drooling in anticipation over the new Isis, and I have a freaking countdown going until the new Converge comes out...
Okay, that was a lot...new guy's going to sleep now
-
Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium.
If Dylan, Iron Maiden and Megadeth all have new albums out which don't dissapoint then they may well rescue this year from being a disasster.
-
1. DeVotchKa - Curse Your Little Heart
2. The Church - Uninvited, Like the Clouds
3. Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
4. The Knife - Silent Shout
5. Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky
I'm hoping the new Melvins will add something. and I am kind of excited for Bob Dylan, but I don't know. There's alot of albums from 2006 I still haven't picked up yet. I haven't heard the new Sonic Youth. Or the new Thermals album. I plan to pick at least one of those up in the next couple days.
-
Why are you all forgetting Peeping Tom?
-
Because he's going to post his own list soon.
Badum tsh.
-
I apologize if this has been done already.
1) TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Are they good? They are coming to dallas soon and I would like to know if it is worth the drive.
-
2. The Church - Uninvited, Like the Clouds
The Aussie band who did 'Under The Milky Way Tonight' in the 80s? If so, that's ace that they're still going!
Don't have much of a list myself...
J-Dilla - 'Donuts' (schizophrenic hip-hop instrumentals... incredibly progressive and baffling... probably the post-humous 'The Shining' will be on the list by the time the year is out, but I have to wait for next pay to pick it up)
Mapstation - 'Distance Told Me Things To Be Said' (subdued Kluster / early Tangerine Dream arpeggio action with occasional hints at dub)
Dabrye - 'Two / Three' (Ann Arbor techno nerd comes back with his 3rd hip-hop album and for better or worse brings a truck load of MCs. less consistent, primarily thanks to some of the raps, but amazingly far reaching sounds and all up ... rad)
Junior Boys - 'So This Is Goodbye' (soppy synthpop.. the 2-step inspired beats are gone but there's still a nice, forward-looking aesthetic and it has the best Sinatra cover ever)
-
The Dresden Dolls-Yes,Virginia.
MY MIND,SHE CANNOT BE CHANGED.
-
To all of you besides myself who listed the new Dresden Dolls: did any of you think that it wasn't as powerful as the self-titled album? I still love the new album, but it just kinda has this weird vibe that it gives me, almost to where lyrically Amanda just wrote around loose concepts and turned them into songs, where in the ST, it seemed more personal? There's something about the new one that I just can't put my finger on; it's not exactly a "sophmore slump" but it feels like something's lacking...
-
Dabrye - 'Two / Three' (Ann Arbor techno nerd comes back with his 3rd hip-hop album and for better or worse brings a truck load of MCs. less consistent, primarily thanks to some of the raps, but amazingly far reaching sounds and all up ... rad)
That came out this year? Well that's definitely on my list then...
oh and also Kaki King - Until We Felt Red
-
About The Dresden Dolls, I never heard the first one so I can't say but Yes, Virginia does have weak points. There is some subpar songs such as Delilah and a few other quiet ones. As far as I am concerned they are best when they are doing manic cabaret-rock.
-
Frightened Rabbit- The Greys followed by Guillemots- Through The Windowpane.
The others are too close to rank just yet.
Also MOTHERFUCKIN Aereogramme album coming in October.
-

I think a good excuse would be 'I don't listen to that band.'
-
I second the RHCP Stadium Arcadium bid.
I suppose I haven't really picked up anything produced this year, other than that and the new Pearl Jam album (which I enjoyed, but seems like a lot of other people didn't).
The new Audioslave album comes out in like a week and I'm looking forward to it. I liked the new single off it anyway.
-
I apologize if this has been done already.
1) TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Are they good? They are coming to dallas soon and I would like to know if it is worth the drive.
Definitely worth it. I'm seeing them for the second time this year. Check out the new album to see if it's your thing. Desperate Youth and Bloodthirsty Babes is also a great album.
-
2. The Church - Uninvited, Like the Clouds
The Aussie band who did 'Under The Milky Way Tonight' in the 80s? If so, that's ace that they're still going!
YES! It is a really good album, too.
-
I'd put some votes in for:
Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia (also how can you call Delilah one of the weak tracks? Thats got to be one of my favorite three on the album)
Band of Horses - Everything All the Time
The North Atlantic - Wires in the Walls (technically a re-release, but the 2003 pressing was something like 5000 cds)
And while I don't know I'd call it one of the best albums of 2006, the biggest surprise for me was Thursday - A City By Light Divided, never really liked any of their earlier stuff, but the songwriting and production on this album dovetail incredibly well.
-
1. Bruce Springsteen - The Seeger Sessions
2. Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
3. TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
4. Current 93 - Black Ships Ate The Sky
5. Amy Millan - Honey From The Tombs
-

-
Amy Millan - Honey From The Tombs
How is it compared to her Stars stuff? I took a long time even realising that it was her judging by the decadent cover.
Nuance: It is too long if you ask me and it makes it's point at about halfway.
-

It's not nearly as good.
And yeah, airbrushing can do wonders.
-
It's completely different from Stars stuff, I wouldn't really compare the two. I prefer Stars, but I think Amy Millan solo is still wonderful. But I just remember about the Liars album this year, so Millan will have to be bumped down to number 6 at least, and I'll need to think more about what's come out this year.
-
I think what you guys think is lacking in Yes,Virginia is the rawness of the self-titled album. Many of the songs in the ST were more merciless and angry, while Yes,Virginia went for something a bit more complex and artsy. Yes,Virginia tops the ST,in my opinion.
-
The Amy Millan album isn't as good as her Stars work, but give "Baby I" a listen. It's still rather impressive.
-
1. !T.O.O.H.! - Order And Punishment
2. Anathallo - Floating World
3. Helios - Eingya
4. Kaki King - ...Until We Felt Red
5. Tokyo Police Club - A Lesson In Crime
:)
-

you might be on to something there...i hadn't thought about that aspect of it. i still don't know which one i prefer overall, but i definately dig them both.
-
Has anyone heard the new Aloha album (Some Echoes)? I heard a track on Last.fm radio today and I liked it, but otherwise I haven't heard anything else off of it.
-
Has anyone heard the new Aloha album (Some Echoes)? I heard a track on Last.fm radio today and I liked it, but otherwise I haven't heard anything else off of it.
Yeah, it'd probably be in my top 20 so far. Solid album. Check it out.

1. Man Man- Six Demon Bag (No, Seriously)
2. Danielson- Ships
3. be your own PET- S/t (I predict this opinion will be derided by British forum goers but ignored by American ones.)
4. Liars- Drums Not Dead
5. Herbert- Scale
As far as be your own PET is concerned I think that is a wonderful album. Musically it is genius, my only real problem with it is some of Jemina's lyrics... otherwise a great album.
I second Danielson's album.. not much of his stuff had really grabbed me but Ships for some reason begs me to listen to it over and over.
anyway beyond this point there be lists
No particular order
1. Be your own PET -- s/t
2. Danielson - Ships
3. Neil Young - Living with war
4. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
5. Beruit - Gulag Orkestar
6. El Pero Del Mar - s/t
7. Camera Obscura - Lets get out of this country
8. Sufjan Stevens - Avalanche
hmm ok thats a top 8 I guess because I can't think of anything else right now.. I'm almost sure Dylans album will make it on this list and there are likely a few others coming out that will bump some of the ones listed to honorable mentions ...
-
I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say Gnarls Barkley.
Good call on Camera Obscura, by the way.
-
Also I'd include The Replacements comp Don't you know who I think I was ... but it's a comp so I don't see that as fair... besides it's the Replacements and frankly it's hard to beat any of their albums much less a comp of their best.
-
oh man, I can actually play this game this time.
Here's my top ten, but I don't think I can put them into a strict order. I've kind of ranked them, but my tastes vary with mood a lot, and I'm not really as fanatical about music as some of you folks.
- The Knife, Silent Shout
- TV on the Radio, Return to Cookie Mountain
- The Gossip, Standing in the way of control
- Tiga, Sexor
- Ellen Allien & Apparat, Orchestra of bubbles
- Mates of State, Bring it back
- Camera Obscura, Let's get out of this country
- Junior Boys, So this is goodbye
- Lily Allen, Alright Still
- Ratatat, Classics
I have a few of the other albums you guys have mentioned, but haven't listened to them enough yet to say whether or not I really like them.
-
I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say Gnarls Barkley.
Good call on Camera Obscura, by the way.
I completely forgot to mention Gnarls Barkley.
I also enjoyed
Mojave 3 - Puzzles Like You
Every Move a Picture - Heart=Weapon
Les Claypool - Of Whales And Woe
-
I decided this would be better suited as a discussion thread. Top ten lists are still welcome but we can also discuss any albums released this year.
Camera Obscura is really growing on me. It might crack my top 10 soon.
-
Haven't bought or listened to many 2006 albums; however, the three I've heard and liked are:
-The Eagles of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
-Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
-Danko Jones - Sleep Is The Enemy
I'm also looking forward to the new mc chris album, which is supposed to drop in the next couple of weeks.
-
-the blood brothers, young machetes
-islands, return to the sea
-liars, drums not dead
-billy talent, II
-the decemberists, crane wife
just albums i've been rather pleased with this year so far
-
I'm a big fan of Islands- Return to the Sea
also
Oh No! Oh My!
Aloha - Some Echoes
among others
I also heard something about a new Album Leaf one, don't know about that yet though, haven't heard it.
-
Islands is solid but it doesn't really stick out in my mind when I think of albums from this year. It's simply decent.

Tell me if you guys are interested.

3. Islands- Return to the Sea
4. Tapes 'n Tapes- The Loon
5. Asobi Seksu- Citrus
6. Destroyer- Destroyer's Rubies

13. Comets on Fire- Avatar
14. Sonic Youth- Rather Ripped
15. The Knife- Silent Shout
Oh snaps, I forgot about Asobi Seksu. I bought it randomly used and loved it (I was attracted by the weird case).
As for your list, do you write for Pitchfork by any chance?
-
As far as be your own PET is concerned I think that is a wonderful album. Musically it is genius, my only real problem with it is some of Jemina's lyrics... otherwise a great album.
I actually love the lyrics. She isn't old enough yet to write about anything especially deep or introspective (and witness the disaster of other 18-year-olds who have tried) so she sings about bicycles and going on adventures. Its fucking perfect.
This thread is reminding me of all the albums I planned on getting when I initially heard about them.
Going back to the band I mentioned in my first post, Oneida... everyone should go seek out an mp3 of "Up With the People" off their new album. Maybe the best song I've heard this year.
-
I haven't really bought much this year:
1. Summoning - Oath Bound
2. Ihsahn - The Advesary
3. Drudkh - Blood in our Wells
4. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime II
5. Samael - Era One/Lessons in Magic
Summoning, stands heads and shoulders above the rest so far, their best album since Stronghold imo.
Also looking forward to new Maiden and Mars Volta.
-
I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say Gnarls Barkley.
I was surprised by that as well.
I don't usually run out and get albums as soon as they're released so I haven't heard a whole lot from 2006, but here's what I got:
1. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
2. The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
3. Islands - Return to the Sea
4. Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Jury's still out on Matt Friedberger's Winter Women/Holy Ghost Language School and I just downloaded Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.
-
Today I bought
Soul Asylum - The Silver Lining
Say Hi To Your Mom - Impeccable Blahs
-
My best-o-06 looks like this so far, unordered.
Shout Out Out Out Out - Not Saying/Just Saying
Eagles Of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Etiquette
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
Islands - Return To The Sea
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
Neil Young - Living With War
Ladyhawk - s/t
The Sadies - In Concert
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
I would like to recommend some Rhymefest and maybe Kanye West's Late Orchestration. Unfortunately I haven't heard enough of either. So I guess if anyone has, let me know how it was?
-
1. Mogwai - Mr. Beast
2. Be Your Own PET - s/t
3. Peaches - Impeach My Bush
4. Amy Millan - Honey From the Tombs
5. Aloha - Some Echoes
6. Islands - Return to the Sea
7. Tapes 'n Tapes - The Loon
8. Zero 7 - The Garden
9. Ellen Allien & Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles
10. Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
note: this is a very rough list and I'm probably forgetting something terribly important
-
I'm a big fan of Islands- Return to the Sea
also
Oh No! Oh My!
Aloha - Some Echoes
among others
I also heard something about a new Album Leaf one, don't know about that yet though, haven't heard it.
I gotta get Some Echoes. The new Album Leaf is due out mid September I think.
-
In no order, I have:
Figurines - Skeleton
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
Joshua Radin - We Were Here
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of this Country
Calexico - Garden Ruin
Islands - Return to the Sea
-
Gotta wait for mc chris, Maiden, and Weird Al to release their new ones before I could make such a list
-
UPDATE: I forgot Gnarls Barkley, and I also need to mention the new Jurassic-5 album. It's incredible.
-
shit, Jurassic 5 are still together? Man, the fact that I totally don't know this depresses me.
-
I think it's a bit early for lists especially with Cruachan AND Cradle Of Filth still to come.
-
I think it's a bit early for lists especially with Cruachan AND Cradle Of Filth still to come.
That's why this thread is around. So people can discuss albums as they come along.
-
I can't make a definitive list yet, as there are a couple releases that I haven't listened yet (because they're not out yet), but on the list would be:
The Flying Luttenbachers - Cataclysm because it's The Flying Luttenbachers
Daughters - Hell Songs because apparently this album sounds a bit like Arab on Radar and that can't be bad thing
The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Minus the Bear - Menos el Oso
And I'm really looking forward to the new Blood Brothers and Aereogramme albums.
That's all I can think of, really.
-
Cradle Of Filth
Wait, are you serious?
Tell me you're not serious.
-
The new Daughters is really, really good...also kind of funny, because they pissed off a lot of the grindcore kids, because they don't scream anymore.
-
Cradle Of Filth
Wait, are you serious?
Tell me you're not serious.
Eh, some shitty metal band.
-
Cradle Of Filth
Wait, are you serious?
Tell me you're not serious.
I'm SO, SO, SO,SO serious it hurts. I love this band.
-
The new Daughters is really, really good...also kind of funny, because they pissed off a lot of the grindcore kids, because they don't scream anymore.
Yeah, I've read about that and I've already listened to Fiery. I can imagine that most kids, who expect another The Locust knockoff are really pissed off because from what I've read and heard, this is very weird stuff. Now if my mailorder had the decency to ship that freaking CD so I can listen to it...
Edit: And while it's only technically a 2006 release, I'm really happy about Botch's Unifying Themes Redux.
-
I'm SO, SO, SO,SO serious it hurts. I love this band.
Why?
-
So far I can rate the following:
- Asobi Seksu - Citrus
- Forward, Russia - Give me a wall
- Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds
- Red Sparowes - long title woohaa.
- Volcano! - Beautiful Seizure
- Woven Hand - Mosaic
- Island - Return to the Sea
2006 has been a good year so far. I'm also hoping whatever Smashing Pumpkins are recording won't be shit. A long shot, sure, but I have hope.
-
I'm SO, SO, SO,SO serious it hurts. I love this band.
Why?
I think they just deliver a very good package. Great, great, great music (inventive, never dull or average), good live performances (I've seen a couple of shows and was impressed), good artwork (saying little, I know, but it's imagery that works for me) and they don't take themselves overly serious. They have a sense of humour about things and I like that.
-
Not in order
Man Man - Six Demon Bag
Placebo - Meds
Neil Young - Living With War
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
-
Nobody liked Fishscale? It's still in my top ten.
-
Sparks win with Hello Young Lovers
HURRAH
Victory party will be held in my pants.
. = ? (?)
-
I bought "A Matter of Life and Death" on the weekend and it's damn excellent, Iron Maiden have done it again. Interesting lyrics as well, most of the songs are about war, religon and death, reminds me a lot of "Somewhere in Time" the way it has the same theme running through the lyrics and Artwork.
Best songs are "Out of the Shadows", "Lord of Light", "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" and "The Legacy"
It's a lot heavier then Dance of Death and I'd even say it's more prog as well. The three guitars are utilized extremely well. It's a tough call but I'd but this at no 1 for the year at the moment.
-
Although not officially released I'm adding
Joanna Newsom - YS
This album is insanely good, it'll be in my collection the minute it's released.
-
New Junior Boys is great as well.
-
Hmmm. Here's five in no pertikkilar order:
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
The Reduction Agents - The Dance Reduction Agents
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Still heaps I need to listen to, such as Thom Yorke, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Shearwater, Asobi Seksu etc.
-
Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood is easily the best album of the year, in my opinion.
Decemberists, Gnarls Barkley, Destroyer, Islands, Belle & Sebastian, and Pipettes are pretty good too.
-
I've really been meaning to listen to the Pippettes.. I'll have to get around to it.
-
I have to put in a vote for The Rapture's new album. It's def. amazing.
-
New Darren Hanlon album due out here at the beginning of October. I've already heard him play some of the songs live, and they're pretty good. Definitely the album I'm most keen to hear this year.
Also, Okkervil River fans: they've put out a fantastic E.P. to coincide with their Australian tour. If you can find it, get it.
-
Well done sir. I say again, well done. Had no idea about that EP. The live rendition of Westfall is superb.
-
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
The Liars - Drums Not Dead
The Panda Band - This Vital Chapter
Eagles of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
and I really like what I've heard so far from The Rapture - Pieces Of The People We Love.
-
The live rendition of Westfall is superb.
They played that as the final song of the gig I went to on Monday. Just as rockin'. Two-song encore: an acoustic, solo rendition of "Stone", and then the rest of the band walked on and ripped into "Westfall". Awesome gig.
-
I'm really excited for Beck's new album, The Information. I can already tell it's going to be my favorite album of the year.
Other albums I've enjoyed this year - Under the Influence of Giants and Office. Both self titled albums. I think...
-
Devin Townsends Synchestra was 2006 wasn't it? I have really been enjoying this album so far, his solo stuff started as as somewhat disturbing and chaotic shit-noise and has pretty much evolved into some pretty poignant, and arse-kicking stuff in my opinion.
And then you have Vampolka, which is just a pretty snazzy little track, I like the way theres always little ridiculous, almost jazzy kind of tracks somewhere on his later stuff, in amongst the rest of his stuff.
-
Okay, I've gotten some new stuff. So. Albums from 2006 I have enjoyed:
TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
The Knife - Silent Shout
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Persuit (the only B&S I've listened to. It is pretty neat, I think).
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - Fear Is On Our Side
Peaches - Impeach my Bush
Current 93 - Black Ships Ate the Sky
Jurassic 5 - Feedback
DeVotchKa - Curse Your Little Heart
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Cursive - Happy Hollow
Boris - Pink
The Church - Uninvited Like the Clouds
Still have not heard new Thermals, Sonic Youth, Queensryche, Neil Young, or Dylan. And the Melvins are coming out with something pretty soon, as well as the Residents. It is turning out to be a pretty good year.
-
In no particular order.
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
Cursive - Happy Hollow
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Judging by what i've heard so far the new Yo La Tengo album, "I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass" should be pretty sweet too.
-
1. The Best of Ray Charles
2. Wicked Soundtrack.
3. Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia. (Woah, who didn't buy that?)
4. Ben Fold's Five - Rockin' the Suburbs
5. Team America soundtrack
6. The Hush Sound - Like Vines
7. Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This To Memory
Those are the only ones I can really remember buying, actually.
-
Heh, Ben Folds is pretty funny.
Anyway... I'm surprised that no one's mentioned "Stadium Arcadium", the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album. I for one was rather impressed. It's one of their more solid albums, if you ask me, and I rather like the band.
The new Pearl Jam album was alright. The first couple tracks I liked (Life Wasted is cool) although it tapers off about halfway through the album.
Most recent purchase for me was the new Audioslave album "Revelations", seeing as it was just released last week. It's very different sounding than anything else the band's put out so far, so I'm still undecided on how much I like it or not. I do know that I don't regret the purchase at all because it is a good album. Just... different from what I was expecting and the more I listen to it, the more I find myself liking it.
-
Also, I feel my own band's four releases so far this year - Death Throes, Riding On A Unicycle (With No Wheels And No Seat), The Filler EP and Neon Armageddon should all be on this list. Because we're awesome.
With any luck we can squeeze out a couple more albums - counting the Best Of - before the end of the year.
-
4: Korpiklaani - Tales Along This Road
Yep.
The only other two 2006 albums I've bought this year are Vaux - "Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice" and Motorhead - "Kiss Of Death".
Although The Falcon just released their first full length today and I need to get that badly.
-
i was so disapointed with the new Motorhead. it's like they tried way too hard to copy Inferno (which cant be beat) and they failed. i hate to say it, but its true. very few of the songs have the same energy that Inferno had and some of the songs are blatant copies of songs off Inferno.
i like a couple songs on Kiss of Death but overall, i am disapointed.
-
New Justin Timberlake and Basement Jaxx are both excellent.
-
Some 2006 albums I can't turn off once I've started them...
Ratatat - Classics
Sound Team - Movie Monster
People In Planes - As Far As The Eye Can See
Peeping Tom - s/t
Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Prefuse 73 - Security Screenings
Ms. John Soda - Notes And The Like
Mellowdrone - Box
Gosh, it is hard to believe some of those came out this year. It seems like so long ago!
-

That would be the coolest thing ever.
They always talk about bands that "weren't around very long" like, say, Cream, which was only together for 3 years. If a band could make like 4 albums in one year and then make a best of and then disband, it would be some kind of record.

Yah, exactly. I just listed it because it's one of maybe three albums that were released this year that I actually have.
-

Well, unfortunately we released our first album at the end of 2005, so I think we don't count for that any more.
This is all self-releasing, of course, we're not on a label. We just flog these ourselves. I mentioned myself because I thought it'd be funny.
-
I've been generally surprised at how well TV on the Radio's newest has held up to all the hype. I'm usually a bit disappointed by stuff that's been getting praised too death, too much expectations I suppose. But I've not been able to get away from Return From Cookie Mountain since getting it.
-
Just got it, looking forward to talking about it when I finish.
-
alright I see some people doing this so if we get to count albums that were really 2005 but had 2006 US releases I badly need to add:
Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites
The Figurines - Skeleton
-
I gotta add Broken Boy Soldiers - The Raconteurs to my list. Solid, solid album.
-
Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites
The Figurines - Skeleton
I don't think they count but whatever. Skeleton was good but I still can't see much worthwhile in ATGHK. Most of it just isn't good enough if you ask me. Frengers was great but this is a bit weak. Much like another big Danish release of 2005, Kashmir's No Balance Palace. They were both highly anticipated and unfortunately quite disappointing.
-
Yeah, The Hold Steady's album is pretty great.
-
Two new cd's I've downloaded recently (and hope to buy as soon as I have the cash) are Made Out Of Babies - Coward, and Battle Of Mice - A Day Of Nights. It's the same singer in both bands; MOOB sounds like a more fucked up version of Isis with kind of creepy, angry, serial-killer girl vocals and BOM has more of an ambient feel to it (courtesy of the guitar and keyboard work from Josh Graham of Neurosis and Red Sparowes) which makes it almost a kind of chill cd...except that it's scary as all hell...
-
- Tiga, Sexor
Holy crap! Tiga and I went to the same high school in Montreal, I was a few grades under him, in the same grade as his younger brother. I had no idea he put at an album, especially not one that was big with Australians.
Edit: It's not bad. Untse Untse Untse Untse
Edit2: Sure Juror - Smut is going in my albums of the year. If these guys can get some distribution going, they're going to be huge. Well -- indie huge. Download the album (legally) here.

You realize three of those albums didn't come out in 2006 right?
Didn't Rockin' the Suburbs come out in 2001?
-
Oh bloody hell. This is going to change, as the Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly album is supposed to be stellar, and I haven't heard it yet, nor have I heard Modern Times or the new Rapture LP, but so far, in no particular order:
Tilly and the Wall - Wild Like Children (Can't believe more people haven't said this. Conor Oberst flavoured electro-pop from Nebraska.)
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (Not listened to it enough)
The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine (Angry punk! Grrrr!)
The Submarines - Declare a New State! (Everyone should own this. It's like the perfect brittle pop of Stars, but with lots of awesome clicks and beeps, plus has a really heartwarming backstory)
James Figurine - Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake (Kinda hit and miss, but the hits - '55566688833' and 'You Again' are truly awesome)
The Young Knives - Voices of Animals and Men (Awkward spiky, jerky middle-england tweedcore. Perfect disaffected summer music)
The Automatic - Not Accepted Anywhere (Massively hyped, but still full of single-worthy shoutalongs)
White Rose Movement - Kick (Not as good as the live show, but still very impressive scene-electro)
Jenny Lewis - Rabbit Fur Coat (I don't think it's -quite- as good as her Rilo Kiley stuff, but is easily arguable either way)
Plan B - Who Needs Actions When You Got Words (Genuinely uncompromising, disturbing look at the dark side of London fron Ben Drew)
Honourable mentions to Placebo, Metric, The Chalets, The Futureheads, Morrissey, Dirty Pretty Things, The Infadels, Be Your Own Pet, Billy Talent, Thom Yorke, Datarock, Snowden, Peter Bjorn and John, The Dresden Dolls, The Raconteurs....I could go on.
