I was thinking that doing a "Questionable Content Top 25 of 2006" would be a cool idea. There seem to be a good number of knowledgable posters when it comes to the subject of music and I think it'd be fun to do. If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to organize it and it would go into effect sometime in December. I'd tally up the votes and make the list. When the time comes, we could possibly make a webspace for the list with blurbs from certain posters who particularly enjoyed each album. Feel free to add on, comment or criticize here.
Here is the wiki page:
http://www.questionablewiki.com/index.php/Top_25_Albums_of_2006
Updates will be made to this thread and the page as necessary.
-
If you do it, you should put it on the QC Wiki.
-
If you're looking for votes, I say do it.
-
good idea...i too say go for it!
-
If you do it, you should put it on the QC Wiki.
I'm not sure how to add a page.
-
You make a new page by just using the title of the new page in the url.
-
Do it. I think you'll get plenty of interest.
-

Ah okay. Thanks a lot.
-
So, are we not going to wait until 2006 is over then?
EDIT: Nevermind, actually bothered to read the wiki.

Yeah, I just want to give everyone a heads up now so people can start keeping in mind albums they enjoy.
-
You guys ready for this? PM me your top 10 lists.
Rules:
1) Album was released in 2006
2) No live albums
3) No compilations/greatest hits, etc.
Post questions in the thread. PM me the lists.
-
Why's it matter?
-
I haven't even bought 25 albums released in 2006 yet. I've bought quite a few, but not 25. I've still got, what, 50+ years of other music to try to catch up on...
Also I'm a spoil sport and dislike year end lists that rank albums that are completely disparate experiences. For instance, I love the Liars, Mogwai, Destroyer, TV On The Radio, and Yo La Tengo albums released this year. But how the hell do I rank them?? It would come down to personal preference...
-
To 'rank' the album, ask yourself these questions...
How many albums has the band had out?
Do they have a good track record?
How does it compare to previous albums?
Is this new album something of an accomplishment for the band, or have you seen it all before?
Which band has the better music? Most talent? Nice production?
Choose little bits of each album that you don't like. Compare these to the little bits of the other albums you don't like.
I do think it's possible to 'rank' albums, and I think doing it well is a skill.
It's easy to put your favourite album at the top of a list, but is it REALLY the best album you've heard that year?
Maybe we should call it 'favourite 25 of 2006'?
-
I'd love to do this but I can't log in to the QC wiki for some time now.
-
Lawrence Arms had an album out this year.
Thread over.
-
Of Course it is.

I don't think ranking albums is a skill because it is subjective as can be. What does 'best album of the year' mean?? What does 'best' alone even mean?? The album I listened to most, the album I think will last the test of time, the album I think would most recommend to others, etc.?? All those questions have very different answers to me.
-

... there is no good, there is no evil, it's all one big continuous ... oh ... nevermind.
Let them have their fun.
-
Checking the list of what I think were the best releases of 2005 I have...
26.
Shit.
-
I could have sworn I posted this in the original thread. My bad. Anyway, the lists will only be top 10 for submissions. The top 25 votegetters will be in the final list.
-
Of Course it is.
make believe = love
-
I'd participate this if I hadn't already learned from the Battle of the Bands that my opinion is pretty much entirely irrelevant in comparison to the larger habits of the forum.
-

To me the 'best' is the one that's considerred the biggest achievement. That's why I ask myself all those questions. There are a lot of factors I have to take into consideration, not just how much I enjoy the music.
Actually, the more I think about my argument, the more I realise how silly it is.
Remember kids, trying to pull all nighters while running off a packet of jaffa cakes does not work. And Gryff is right.
-
Truth be told, I used to be obsessed with ranking albums and making various lists (and that was before I read High Fidelity). But since 2006 was the first year I really kept up with new albums coming out as much as I could, I found myself listening to fantastic albums almost every month, and at the end of the year--having finally purchased Joanna Newsom's Ys two days ago--I feel like ranking albums would be an exercize in futility because I have about 5 or 6 albums from 2006 that I would say were the album of the year. Depending on my mood, the direction of the wind, and whether I'm drunk or not, the top spot keeps changing hands.
-
So I guess no one wants to do this now..
-
I do. It'll be interesting if nothing else. However we'll talk about it again in a week or so.
-
why do they have to be ranked? couldn't it just be an unordered list of albums that are considered by most here to be an excellent example of what was put out in 2006.
-
Only if it includes Black Ships Ate the Sky, A Matter of Life and Death and Ashes Against the Grain.
Otherwise I am going to have to rape and kill shit.
-
I've ranked my albums of the year due to complete boredom, and two of those happen to be in the top ten. Haven't heard the Maiden yet.
-
Is it wrong that I am angry about Agalloch getting the "hipster seal of approval" by pitchfork and what have you? I've liked them for a few years now. :|
-
It must be a bummer for you that someone else likes them?
Remember kids, trying to pull all nighters while running off a packet of jaffa cakes does not work. And Gryff is right.
I think my favourite album this year was Yo La Tengo. Or TV on the Radio.
Thread over?

Me too. Jokes on the hipsters though, I don't think they're going to do another album. It's not like it means hipsters understand black metal anyway. Play 'em Ulvers Nattens Madrigal and they'd still run crying to their mummys. It'll be like it always is, one metal band gets name-dropped for a while, then everyone forgets about them. I'm only going to really get annoyed when Pitchfork starts namedropping Crown of Autumn or Wyrd.
And that will never happen, so I'm cool.
-
It was Opeth for a while.
And wait, Agalloch is breaking up? Because if so, I'm gonna be pretty pissed.
-

Didn't I just argue this for half of this thread??
-
meanwhile i still think that the ellora demo that i picked up at one of the shows they played support at is the best album i've heard released this year and they're not even signed to a label so it's kindof hard to comparativly rank it since other people can't judge
-
And wait, Agalloch is breaking up? Because if so, I'm gonna be pretty pissed.
I'm preeetty sure they are not planning on making another record.

ON TODAY'S EPISODE OF MYTHBUSTERS....
Is ScrambledGregs just an alternate account for Tommy??
(http://www.babytrollblog.com/archives/images/kari_byron_01b.jpg): Tee hee hee, I'm eye candy for geeky indie rock men!! Watch me bend over this computer while I look up Greg's account info...
(http://www.gencon.com/images/2006/indy/MGOH-Grant-Imhara.jpg): Kari's search didn't turn up anything, so I decided to check Greg's user stats on last.fm. It turns out he has never listened to a band from the Dischord record label.
(http://www.gencon.com/images/2006/indy/MGOH-Tory-Belleci.jpg): CHECK IT OUT DUDES!! I totally set up an account on last.fm and kept messaging him about Fugazi. He said he means to check them out but doesn't own anything by them.
(http://www.babytrollblog.com/archives/images/kari_byron_01b.jpg): Tee hee hee!! Myth busted??
(http://www.chuckchat.com/images/mythbusters3.jpg): Well, I think we can safely say...myth busted.

Guys, I'm reading Pitchfork's list and I'm wondering if there's any way we can kind of do what they do with theirs, i.e. write a little bit about each album that makes the list. Also, to everyone saying "why can't this be unordered?" I have responses:
1) This is fun.
2) With the diverse musical tastes of this forum, it's likely that every participating forumite's top ten will cover some different ground. You won't get an unordered list but no two lists will be the same - for example, Eyeball Kid's list is likely to include the Hold Steady and not Beach House. My list will probably include Beach House but not the Hold Steady. I see this being true for a lot of folks, like Khar, Will, Tommy, Darryl, Storm and Kai. Having these lists which are all over the map will provide a fairly comprehensive review of music, but ranking allows for some harmless fun and majority rule.
-
Kai, Agalloch.
Seriously, you're a fucking traitor.
Agalloch are totally on my little mental list that I haven't even written out though
so
GET IN THE GROUND
-

Me too. Jokes on the hipsters though, I don't think they're going to do another album.
They will continue to record.
-
I was pretty sure Agalloch weren't going to be doing anything significant after this album. I may have confused them with another band but I don't think so. I'll search out the interview.
EDIT: No, I'm thinking of someone else. Agalloch might possible hiatus for a bit in a few years whilst Don Anderson does his PhD, but that's it as far as I can see.
That's cool! I had been thinking for ages that this would be their last release. Yay!
-
why do they have to be ranked? couldn't it just be an unordered list of albums that are considered by most here to be an excellent example of what was put out in 2006.
They have to be ranked because the list will be based on how many points each album receives. A #1 album, for example, will receive 10 points, #2 9 and so on to #10. The top 25 point-getters will make up the list.
Also, rankings are more fair, says I, the one organizing this. And finally, there wouldn't be enough members to simply take the albums with the "most votes".
-
I've received one PM thus far. Come on, people.
-
I can literally only think of four things released this year that I have heard and enjoyed, and one of those is DI6's 'Free Tibet' ffs.
-
My list did not in fact include Beach House.
Skittish, question: are you going to be revealing each participant's list at the end? It would be cool to see what individual forumites pick. Maybe a separate wiki page or section for it?
Also guys, I wholeheartedly support this idea. Rather than a thread in which everyone just posts their favourite albums and no discussion occurs, this ought to get us talking about, reviewing and reconsidering music from 2006. I happen to apparently be in some kind of slight minority with my opinion that 2006 was actually quite a strong year for music insofar as the quality of the best albums released was pretty darned high. I would like very much for this view to be the majority and that's not going to happen if we don't have any discourse.
-
I think 2006 was a pretty good year as well.
Really enjoyed albums by Agalloch, Summoning, Ihsahn and Borknagar.
Psycroptic's "Symbols of Failure" is one of the best Death Metal albums I've heard in years, its brutal, technical, well written and has some fucking excellent riffs. Oh and the Album Artwork (http://images.quintessence.sh/neurotic/psycroptic/2006_symbolsoffailure_web.jpg) is excellent as well
The Mars Volta (I know a lot of people hate them on this board) put out a very solid album. Iron Maiden and Queensryche prooved they still have it with very strong albums.
-
I've received one PM thus far. Come on, people.
PM'D, although there's not 25 albums on there. I haven't listened to 25 albums that were released this year :P

Yeah, I was thinking I'd probably post everyone's lists somewhere.
-
Did you get my list, by the way? I PM'd it but my message outbox is showing nothing.
-
Did you get my list, by the way? I PM'd it but my message outbox is showing nothing.
Yeah, I got it.
I've gotten 5 so far. Keep them coming.
-
5 including myself have participated.
-
I would prefer a thread where every member just posted their personal top 10, so those of us with tastes not in line with the general populace of the forum (myself included) wouldn't feel left out.
-
I would prefer that too since I've already made a Top 10 list. With links!
-
If the lists are already going to be compiled and posted in a separate place, why would we have a separate thread for it? Honestly, I don't actually see a lot of my picks making this list, but the idea is really cool - if Pitchfork and Stylus and Tiny Mix Tapes can do it this way, why can't we?
I mean, we can do the other thread. I'm writing brief pieces on each album and that would give me a place to post them all. But jeez, if there's only five so far who have participated, it can't hurt to put your two cents in anyways regardless of whether or not your tastes are "in line" with a group of people who are probably going to vote for everything from Gnarls Barkley to Boris.
-
you're probably right but this one doesn't seem to have enough participation to make an accurate list.
-
Stop bitching and send me your lists.
-
You guys fucking suck.
-
Dude not my fault if this has been a shit year for music.
-
Dude not my fault if this has been a shit year for music.
You just haven't listened to enough music. Or haven't looked in the right places. It's not as good as last year but I've heard probably 40 good albums from '06.
-
2006 was a fairly good year for music. I had difficulty narrowing my list down to ten. But I also had a good time doing it. You should participate in this, jerks.
-
I am going to be working on my own top 10 list for my site (http://www.whatis174.com) later today, so once that's done, I'll post a link or something here.
-
I have nine, exactly nine albums. I'm downloading a few prospective tens. Hopefully another prospective nine as well because I don't even really like everything on this list that much, it's just it is okay and I've heard it.
And, in my opinion, 2006 has indeed been a shit year, with a few exceptions.
-
Anybody who wants to read my top 10 can go ahead and go to my MySpace Blog on the subject (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=68963880&blogID=210483605&MyToken=178a1b1f-1a16-468c-bfd6-b80cb81748c2).
-
This sounds suspiciously like something we do on the WOXY boards. Regardless, I'm sending you my list as we speak.
-

Can you PM me the list for convenience sake?
7 including myself now.
-
I already PM'd you. Insofar as I can tell, I was the first one to do so.
-
My fault. They started coming in a bit today. 9 thus far.
-
If I don't get 15 by the 5th of January, I'm not putting the time into this. Even that number is low but I only have 9 thus far.
-
I'll send mine in a moment. I'm sure others will gradually pass theirs on as well.
-
I think this is a really good idea and I'd hate to see it come to nothing. Get your asses in gear, QC Forum.
-
And even if I only get 15, I think I'll just keep the list down to a top 10. Anything more would just spread it too thin. So unless I get a sudden wave of PMs, it'll probably just end up being a QC top 10 or 15.
-
Again, I still think a thread where everyone posts their own top 10 would be a better idea than this.
-
I say we do a general top 10 thread as well. Those are always rather entertaining, and tend to lead to the discovery of a few decent albums.
-
I am a staunch advocate of "Why can't we do both?"
-
Again, I still think a thread where everyone posts their own top 10 would be a better idea than this.
Everyone top 10 will be posted afterwards anyway? Why the fuck does it matter?
-
Because I know that because I don't listen to the same music as most of the people here my votes will be entirely irrelevant.
-
I forced myself to do a top ten, finally, after giving some albums much needed re-listens.
Honorable Mention
Band of Horses- Everything All The Time
Your enjoyment of this album is largely determined by how this sentence hits you: "My Morning Jacket, with less of a classic rock fetish, topped with the Shins's sweet indie pop." I really love both bands, and so I love this album. I do think the band have a ways to go before they deliver a true classic, but Everything All The Time is quite good.
10) Neko Case- Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
I find myself beginning every thing about this album with "Neko Case is great, but..." The stuff after "but..." being: I don't think her voice is quite as stunning and enthralling as some have suggested. Don't get me wrong. It is a very good, emotive, and unique voice. But it's not like she's going to re-invent singing, or make you swoon. She is not, as they sometimes say, the kind of person you'd be content hearing sing the phone book. So luckily the songs that float underneath are every bit as good, emotive, and unique. The best descriptor I can think of is "country music that doesn't sound like country music" but that's not exactly true.
9) Mogwai- Mr. Beast
I used to own some Mogwai EP a long time ago, which I eventually traded in, and then promptly forgot about Mogwai for about three years. Then I heard a bunch of people recommend this album, which I just as promptly bought and fell in love with. Mogwai are one of those love it or hate it propositions. I have a friend who swears by Spiderland but will sigh loudly when I try to play Mogwai. Perhaps they are most enjoyable when you are in the mood--trying to listen to Mogwai on a sunny day has never worked for me--but when you are in the mood, there is almost nothing better. Mr. Beast is everything you like, or could like, about Mogwai in one neat package.
8) Liars- Drum's Not Dead
The first two times I listened to this album, I thought it was fantastic, and would probably be the best album of the year. Since then, a combination of better albums and repeat listens have lowered my estimation. Still a really great album, dense with ideas, sounds, and rhythms, but never suffocatingly so. The accompanying DVD, with three full movies set to the entire album, were an interesting idea I think more bands ought to try.
7) Danielson- Ships
Addictive, quirky indie pop with a huge crowd of collaborators that never overwhelms the arrangements. The songs sound full, but if you didn't know there were so many people involved, you would never guess the number. Anyway, 'Did I Step On Your Trumpet' was one of my favorite songs of the year. Though the weakest songs are toward the end of the album, it ends on a high note with 'Five Stars And Two Thumbs Up', a deliriously fun wrap-up party of sorts.
6) Deerhoof- Untitled EP
Yes, I'm serious, the free EP they released on their website after the one guitarist left to pursue his own band...I listened to it over and over like it was an album. It would make more sense, perhaps, if I combined this with the recently released +81 EP, but I think this EP is one of the most perfect summations of what it is in Deerhoof that appeals to me. It may not be as over-the-top as their earlier work, but that's OK. By trading in some of their avant garde and hyperactive tendencies for--gasp--actual songwriting and pop sensibilities, Deerhoof have only gotten better with time.
5) Tapes 'N Tapes- The Loon
Something happens to me when I listen to this album. It's not that sense of easy perfection that classic albums have; listening to this one is not like hearing Blonde On Blonde for the first time, where you keep nodding and thinking "christ, it is as good as they said..." No, what happens to me when I listen to The Loon is more akin to reading a great poem and knowing I could do this. Were I more motivated, more talented, and had the necessary equipment, I could do something like this. Great art often inspires me just as often as it makes me want to give up; Tapes 'N Tapes inspire me, while Bob Dylan makes me want to give up. Their influences may be obvious but the consistently great songwriting--and, for lack of a better work, charisma--on display slowly worms its way into your heart like the best rock music.
4) Yo La Tengo- I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass
Another great Yo La Tengo album, continuing a great-album-string that goes back to the early 90s?? Yes please!! There's something pleasingly familiar and also blissfully new about the album, like re-connecting with a friend after two years' absence and sharing great memories and creating new ones.
3) Joanna Newsom- Ys
I never thought I would go for this sort of album. I thought I would be annoyed by her voice, judging from descriptions. I thought I would be irritated by the quirky, unique harp-led instrumentation. I thought the pedigree of the album would overwhelm it--Steve Albini, Jim O'Rourke, and Van Dyke Parks were all involved. But man did she ever pull it all off!! Ys is a rich, almost novel-like album that truly reminds one that music can be just as beautiful instrumentally as it can be richly textual and poetic through words. You will come back to this album again and again to chew on it, getting new snippets of lyrics and quirks each time.
2) Destroyer- Destroyer's Rubies
Honest to god, I have listened to this album more in the past year than anything else. I have always loved Dan Bejar's work with the New Pornographers (I dare you not to want to sing along with 'Jackie, Dressed In Cobras'), but I've never felt compelled to seek out his solo work until this album. Here he combines the self referrential mythos of his singer/songwriter tendencies with addictive pop/rock arrangements that beg listening and re-listening. I give him credit for starting the album with the longest song, an audacious move that actually works.
1) TV On The Radio- Return To Cookie Mountain
It's always great when a band really hits their stride, and hopefully Cookie Mountain will prove to be this for TV On The Radio. It is a fantastic album that has its own unique sound and feel, like a movie you can't quite describe to a friend. Not only that, but put on a pair of headphones and you'll TRULY notice the god damn amazing production on this album. If their first album left you wanting, then this will deliver the goods.
-
The point was to PM them to me and not post them but thanks.
-
I thought this didn't happen in the end? I'll go compile my list anyhows.
-
Skittish, did you get mine? I sent it quite a while ago.
-
I did.
I need three more within the next 2 days for it to happen.
-
Meh, I felt like posting it anyway.
-
I have heard of every artist/album on your list, ScrambledGregs.
I am not sure what that says about your list. I mean, aren't we supposed to be all pretentious and shit?
-
Has your mom heard of them all?
-
25) Bonnie Prince Billy & Tortoise - Brave and the Bold
10) Bonnie Prince Billy & Tortoise - Brave and the Bold
Which is it Tommy? Huh?

Can I help it that my favorite albums of the year weren't as obscure as all hell?? I guess not.
-
I would say that seven out of ten of the bands on my list are recognizable.
Skittish I need to make a change to my list.
-
10. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
9. Mogwai - Mr. Beast
8. Asobi Seksu - Citrus
7. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit

4. Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
3. Liars - Drum's Not Dead
2. Matt Elliott - Failing Songs
1. Mono - You Are There
Most overhyped: Return to Cookie Mountain. Better than Desperate Youth, still not as good as the Young Liars EP.
-
Another great Yo La Tengo album, continuing a great-album-string that goes back to the early 90s??
Did you seriously think And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out and Summer Sun were "great" albums? I think you're the only person I've ever heard in my entire life make that assertion.
-
I really love Summer Sun, but maybe that's because "Don't Have To Be Sad" is one of my favourite YLT songs.
-
i've rated this way
1. little cloud/the apples eye - the whitlams
2. at war with the mystics - the flaming lips
4. factory girls - dallas crane

And Then Nothing... is basically one of my favorite albums ever. It and Summer Sun are what I listen to at night during almost every summer. I know recently I said on here that I thought Summer Sun wasn't that great of an album, but I've come around to it.

So it's a no go on this. I didn't get 15 by yesterday.
-
It was actually a lot harder then I thought comming up with 10 albums, didn't really buy much this year. Some of the items towards the bottom of tthe list are getting a bit iffy on quality
1. Summoning - Oath Bound
2. Borknagar - Origin
3. Ihsahn - The Adversary
4. Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
5. The Mars Volta - Amputechture
6. Psycroptic - Symbols of Failure
7. Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death
8. Countess - Holocaust of the God Believers
9. Satyricon - Now, Diabolical
10. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime II
-
It's over dude. And that still wouldn't even make 15.

I was going to make a section on my site for my top 10, but haven't gotten around to it just yet.. So here's generally what I considered to be my 10 favorite releases of '06. This list will be slightly different than the one I PM'd to Skittish, and other than my #1 pick goes in no real particular order, but so be it! Here goes:
Album Of The Year: Converge - "No Heroes".
The rest, in no particular order:
mewithoutYou - "Brother, Sister"
The Hope Conspiracy - "Death Knows Your Name"
Isis - "In The Absence Of Truth"
Deftones - "Saturday Night Wrist"
Battle Of Mice - "A Day Of Nights"
Russian Circles - "Enter"
Mogwai - "Mr Beast"
Zao - "The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here"
The Paper Chase - "Now You Are One Of Us"
I'm going to do a review of each one of these eventually, so for anyone that may be interested, I'll post a link when it's done.

Wait...I thought Muse was one of those bands that indie folk masturbate over? I'm confused...
/lots of shite on that list either way, but who am I to judge?
-
Damn you, subjectivity.
Really though. Terrible?
Can we reserve the usage of that term for the Limp Bizkits and Papa Roaches and Hawthorne Heightses of the world?
-
I have never listened to Muse, so I can't say one way or the other. I am inclined to continue ignoring them though.
-
Your loss...
-
Skittish, I sent you my list. I'm sure I forgot an album, oh well. This makes me realize
1. How much music I've been listening thats decades old.
2. How much music I've missed this year.
Its kind of depressing, no matter how much music I listen to I can never get to all of it.

I would rank Muse pretty close to those guys, actually. They are dire.
