this thread is so that youcan name all the bands and songs you want jeph to namecheck in QC or indietits.
just to stop everyone from posting about every single band and song they've ever heard of, could you give some kind of reasoning behind why your bands/songs should be referenced.
my list is
irish (would it kill you to do a st.patrick's day special?):
the chalets - cos they're one of the best irish bands going at the moment, and they first and so far only album is the only instance i've ever heard the artistic musical equivalent of an orgasm.
the frames - cos they've been going for the best part of two decades without much recognition, and they are the best live act i've ever seen in person.
other irish acts i'd love to see mentioned are the thrills, who are fading back under the radar after they're initial boom, snow patrol, who have just had their second hit album on our shores, and are really good.
also damien rice, simple kid and david kitt, three of the smaller irish indiesinger/songwriters that have produced consistantly good work for many a year.
and then there's damien rice's old band, bellX1, who have been just unsuccessful enough with their first album to make it barely under the radar. and they have a great sound too, real anthemic shit.
then there's the rest of the irish crowd,
republic of loose
humanzi
the marchalls
the immediate (i'm actually three degrees of seperation away from these guys, my sister knows one of them's brother)
then there's this bunch of yahoos calling themselves u2, i hear they're making a bit of a splash.
then there's non-irish bands
muse - cos they are indie and underground, but on an epic scale. anyone who saw them at reading will know what i'm talking about.
they might be giants - cos they're the best abstract-alt-pop-rock band around
the brianjonestown massacre (any indie kid worth their salt shouldn't need an explaination here)
anyone else got any suggestions?

Anal Cunt?
-
SEE THAT GUYS
THAT'S WHAT IT SHOULD BE LIKE
ANAL CUNT, THIRD POST
-
Anal Cunt?
Groinal Arsehole!
-
The Ass Ponies, purely because I love seeing their name in print.
Then again, Jeph making up 'piss-horse' for a southern doom metal band is pretty close.
-
Hey, my favorite band not only got a namedrop, they were apparantly somewhat responsible for Nat and Amir hooking up...
Love me some Converge
-
"Chlorine for the Gene Pool"
it's an album not a band but still, makes me chuckle every time I read it.
-
The Ass Ponies, purely because I love seeing their name in print.
totally!
also the rest of the empire records soudtrack. better than ezra, evan dando, gwar, the cranberries, buggles, etc.
muse is a band that have been bubbling quietly for a while, and while they have been mucho successful they haven't yet sold out to the singles market (that i've heard of), and get practically no airplay.
hence, their success is almost totally based on word of mouth
hence: underground.

You don't listen to the radio do you?
Following Origin Of Symmetry, they have definitely had more than their fair share of interest. Particularly in Europe and Japan. Absolution is generally perceived as the album responsible for 'breaking' (and I mean that in the loosest sense of the word) America. The places they were playing were getting a hell of a lot bigger anyway. Prior Origin Of Symmetry they were written off as a poor mans Radiohead.
And now they're well, huge.
-
Eels.
Who knew I was going to say that?
-
Me! I did!
-
To be fair, no one really gives a shit about Muse over here in Freedomland.
-
That's because they're not called "Musings on how France is crap, and America is awesome"
-
A reference to Serge Gainsbourg would not only be hilarious but appropriate!
-
fine muse may be making it huge, but they're still a band that i have yet to hear on the radio on our shores. though they do have a super-huge fanbase here. they are one of the best bands i know of.
i cave to your musical anality, muse are not indie anymore.
but they're damn good.
a song:
funkytown by lipps inc.
one of the most bizarre and brilliant one-hit wonders of all time. i know of no-one who can't help but nod along and shake some moneymaker whenever it comes on.
-
muse are a huge band, and have been so for a long while, probably since Origin of Symmetry, but there is no denying they have been huge since Absolution
-
Uh...I don't quite see the merit of this thread.
-
i heard that muse aren't big in america cos their label will only promote them if they produce material that's less "whiney". somehow i don't think they get muse...
-
You know, I don't cease to hear bad things about American labels as far as British music.
-
It actually occurs to me that Muse was getting some airplay on the local Clearchannel owned rock station a few years back. Nothing recently though.
There still, like, not good.
That's because they're not called "Musings on how France is crap, and America is awesome"
Incidently, "freedom fries" have been restored to "french fries". I think francophobia may now be passe in neo-conservative circles.
-
hmmm, muse is played quite frequently on my local clearchanel owned radiostation. but then again they pride themselves on playing "everything alternative" (which means less popular mainstream bands and bad 80s technopop) and keeping their station on "shuffle"
-
a song that's been getting an odd airplay revival over here recently is forever young by alphaville.
i think it should be referenced as it askewly summs up the not-quite adulthood most of the characters are experiencing in this comic.
does even pass in this comic?
