I just wanted to see how many of you guys I could get angry at me. Most of you were pretty cordial, which leads to believe that either you guys are just really laid back or that the general concensus is indeed that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sucks.

Actually, the voice is really an acquired taste. And those weird songs on the album that you wouldn't listen to on their own, those are also really acquired.
Addison's thread was probably the pinnacle of existence, though.

I think there should be a rule about ragging on bands. Everytime you say a band sucks you need to provide another band for comparison purposes. I think CYHSY are ok. I listened to their album some last year ( i got it from someone in mp3). I probably won't listen to it more than a handful of times for the rest of my life. So I sort of disagree that they're awful but I'm not going to go out of my way to defend them either. Thus a comparison is required for me to either accept or be outraged by your musical opinion.
For example if you said CYHSY suck compared to Sonic Youth I'd be all "Yeah, ride on man."
But if you said CYHSY suck compared to Creed...

It's funny how a few months ago everybody would be jizzing over them, but I guess it's time for the prerequisite backlash.

Cambridge, UK:
A team of scientists working in the field of argumentology at Cambridge University yesterday revealed startling findings that could have wide-ranging implications for conversationalists and debaters the world over.
After an exhaustive 10-year study, the research group confirmed in a paper published in the journal Nature the presence in human minds of highly variable and occasionally unstable entities. These entities, called "opinions", apparently come in thousands, maybe even millions, of different forms, the head of the research group, Dr. Otto Humdinger, explained:
"While a single opinion may be shared by numerous different people, there will also be other competing and sometimes even conflicting opinions present in the minds of other people."
In the paper, Dr. Humdinger and his colleagues also claim that opinions appear to arise in at least two distinct ways, either being naturally present in a person's mind, or being implanted there as a consequence of exposure to the opinion in a direct human-human transfer. "It's the old nature vs. nurture question" Dr. Humdinger said.
However, by far the most controversial finding of the study has been the theory put forth that one person's opinion does not necessarily negate, nor even invalidate, another person's opposing and conflicting opinion. Dr. Humdinger claims that two opinions can co-exist in two different minds, without adverse consequences. Rival research groups at other universities have dismissed this notion as "weak" and described Dr. Humdinger and his colleagues as "full of shit". Dr. Meredith Flunky, of the University of Melbourne, dismissed the Cambridge team's claims as "so fucking gay", going on to add that if Dr. Humdinger and his colleagues ever came to Melbourne she would show them "an opinion they can't argue with - know what I mean?"
The debate looks set to continue.

When I saw CYHSY at the Horseshoe in Toronto, Alec Ounsworth was red-faced, tendons sticking out of his neck, sweating, singing into the mic. The last thing you could say about the performance was that it was boring. Similarly, their performance in NYC for New Year's Eve 2005 was supposed to have been epic. So either they're really inconsistent, or they're performances have taken a nose-dive this year -- or I have lower standards than y'all.

i have not aquired the CYHSY taste. it doesn't suck, i just don't care for it.
because i care about progression and evolution of the human race
indie becoming the mainstream leads to people finding indie qualities attractive, which leads to indie people having sex, which leads to children being the byproducts of someone who listens to sufjan stevens. in other words, i do not want recessive genes passed, generation after generation, making us weaker, as a race.

I really like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Including the first song on the album. It puts a massive grin on my face everytime. The rest of it is pretty damn great as well, though the voice is definately an acquired taste. And I'm with Rubby, I definately hear more Talking Heads than Joy Division.

I actually really like CYHSY, before I was even into the whole "indie cred" thing. I didn't like them to be indie, I liked them because, well, they just sounded good to me. I'm going to see them live along with Architecture in Helsinki and Takka Takka soon...But form what y'all've said, they're not great live.

(that's a tongue in cheek smiley)
I thought Feist had been working with BSS all along, since Feel good lost. She's hot alright, but the band doesn't look like it would do that to enhance their performance, they're supposed to be godlike live already (with or without Feist, Haines, Millan whatever (although they do add to the show))

This statement bewilders me. They were popularized by the blogosphere. They're like the college radio band of '05-'06. Are there other bands that you do listen to only to be indie? Who?
As a result of this thread I actually put of the album- I haven't heard it in nine months at least. It already seems dated to me...is that weird? It isn't bad though. I think it sounds like David Byrne trying to play My Bloody Valentine Covers while doped up on cold medicine.

Yes, but so have Milan and Haines. I am a total Arts & Crafts whore. It started with Drew & Canning, but then they grew around/after feel good lost. They're all just kind of an autonomous, amorphous, amorous blob anyhow.
Point of interest: Drew, Milan, and Haines all went to university together, which could be how they all ended up in so many collaborations.

P.S. Tommy was tongue in cheek about hiring singers. Amy Milan, though I love her voice, doesn't really have much stage presence at all (I think Emily stole it all, because she's got excess). If he wasn't being flip about that, I don't want to know, because insinuating two of my favorite bands are nothing but they're female vocalists will lead to swift destruction at the hands of my idle impotent indie rage!

They're a good live band but they're either fantastic or horrendous. When I saw them they were pretty damn good.
