So, Mastodon's new album is out in a few weeks. Apparently there is a complete but very low-quality leak of the album on some P2P services. Anyone have it, and if so, your thoughts?
If not, then who else is excited? There's a song available on their website, and it sounds a lot like Leviathan, in a good way. I was a little worried when I heard that they signed to Warner, but it looks like this isn't affecting their music, at least yet.
-
I am! I really loved Leviathan and I am hoping it can live to standards though I honestly doubt it. Leviathan was very good indeed. I own Remission but I never really listened to it for no particular reason. Fuck the leak, I am buying it on the day it's released in Denmark.
-
I'm definately excited for it...from what I've heard, it's supposed to be pretty awesome, and hell, Scott Kelly from Neurosis is a guest again. I figure it will be as good as Leviathan...maybe a bit different, but just as good.
Funny story though, a really good friend of mine spent almost a year trying to get me to listen to them, and I refused to do so...why, you might ask, would I shun a band so awesome?
I thought their name was stupid.
Yep...i was that shallow.
-
I've heard a few songs, I'm finding it hard to make a decision until I hear the whole album though. Still, can't wait until they tour again!
-
Is anyone going to see them next month with Converge and The Bronx?
-
It depends on how much tickets cost. I don't like Converge and don't know anything about the Bronx, so I'm sort of uninterested in having to sit through that.
-
Dude thats a low quality leak? Thank god, I love the album but the quality is shit...
I'll definitally buy it, it is very psychedelic/stoner metal with newer influences brought in as well. The story is awesom basically they go through an enchanted forest, climb a moutain to get somewhere... I won't spoil it for you... but it defn sounds like a lot of pot and shrooms went into the making of it lol....

oh man, that hurts me [insert ridiculous smiley face thing here to prove that i'm making funny on teh intarwebs]
i kid, i kid...Converge are my favorite band hands down, but given the setting here I didn't expect to find a whole bunch of fans. Converge usually just scares people who aren't already really into heavy music. We can still be friends, honest!
Since you said you don't know anything about The Bronx, I'll give a real quick generic description: it's what happens when a bunch of dirty punk rock kids listen to a LOT of AC/DC riffs and then play them a lot faster, and also do a few drugs here and there. Maybe you'd like 'em, maybe you wouldn't. I'd say if you dig AC/DC at all, you should at least give 'em a listen.
-
Dude, I'm into a LOT of heavy music. I listen to bands that are a lot heavier than Converge. I don't like Converge because I just think dischordance should be used occasionally and at appropriate moments for musical effect, rather than played all the fucking time. Playing jarring intervals constantly just grates on my nerves. It's why I don't like Dillinger Escape Plan either.
And AC/DC has been making the same album for 30 goddamn years, so I've had my fill (read: hearing Back in Black all the fucking time) of them too.
-
eh, tickets to the shows are only 15 bucks on average...from what i've heard mastodon is pretty amazing live, so it might be worth it even if you're just going to see them...
all the chaos stuff is pretty much an either you love it or you hate scenario, and i didn't mean to make a dig against you or anything...just being tongue in cheek...no hard feelings?
-
Mastodon is for yes, guys. This is the overall moral.

Dude, don't even worry about it. I'm just telling you that people can like heavy music and not like Converge.

I've seen Mastodon live, and I was pretty unimpressed. Though, it was on the unholy alliance tour with Slayer, Slipknot and Hatebreed, so I suppose they automatically get to be second best band of the evening...
You can kinda tell by the company they keep. Too much of a generic modern hardcore vibe coming through. Maybe I need to give them another listen, but I can't remember thinking them anything special next to, say, EyeHateGod, Cult of Luna, Crowbar, that sort of thing. And apart from the really, really stoned shit (Electric Wizard, Sleep) all that's not really my thing.
Besides which, I'm not sure there's much space left in this world for awesome , heavy albums that rely on massive drug consumption. I mean, they've been coming out pretty constantly since the seventies now, and it seems to have just become a sort of hipster thing almost. Sludge and drone bands, and to a lesser extent American depressive black stuff, is getting WAY more mainstream critical attention than any other genre of metal right now, and it's really starting to bud off from the rest of us in a lot of ways, if it hasn't already. I know quite a few sludgers who'd punch you in the cock if you accused them of being metal in any way.

I'm watching their set on the Relapse Contamination DVD from a few years ago right now...my vote is that they're awesome, but I can imagine that in a stadium-type atmosphere like the Slayer tour, they might not be as good...I just enjoy the fact that (at least on the dvd) they all look like they're having fun...Troy looks completely happy to be doing what he's doing

I don't know, I went to the Unholy Alliance concert a few weeks ago and I thought they put on the best set. As much as I like Slayer, they aren't very special live. IMO, the best sets for the evening would have been:
- Mastodon
- Children of Bodom
- Lamb of God
- Slayer
- Thine Eyes Bleed
[/list:u]
It was pretty cool though, during Slayer's set, Troy and Brent(Bass and Guitar players respectively) were hanging out by the gate. I was able to chat with them a bit and they're really stoked about the new album. I'll definately be picking this one up when it comes out.
-
I didn't greatly enjoy any part of the concert tbh. It was all a bit lackluster, or just shit, but hey, live music and all. Plus I wouldn't really call the Hammersmith Apollo a stadium.
CoB aren't bad live, but their new shit ruins it.

CoB was pretty awesome. Their keyboardist has amazingly fast hands.

Is it bad that I actually like some of Hate Crew Deathroll?
-
I like Hatecrew Deathroll. It's not a Children of Bodom album, but I like it. It's fun, and it has some godly guitar-work.
I meant mainly the new album.
-
Well yeah, the new album blows. But I wasn't sure how far back 'new shit' extended.
-
I know. And Hate Crew Deathroll marrs the set in its own way anyway, because it doesn't really fit in with the sound of the classic stuff, and they play too many tracks off of it. I would rather have, say, 'Northern Comfort', 'Red Light in My Eyes', 'Kissing the Shadows', 'Bed of Razors', 'Black Widow' etc. than 'Angels Don't Kill', 'Lil Bloodred Riding Hood' or 'Hate Crew Deathroll'.
Still, I gotta say I did sing along a lot. Especially to 'Hate Me!'. I fucking love that song. One of the ones that got me through school, if you know what I mean.
"I DESPISE EVERYTHING I SEE SO I DON'T GIVE A FUCK IF YOU HATE ME!"
They've always been a bit silly, but the attitude's nothing you can really beat them with. There's loads of more underground bands who get away with similiar or worse stuff without attracting criticism for it.
-
They didn't play Northern Comfort? That's ridiculous.
Speaking of which, you never did the Wacken write-up. Did Arch Enemy play any of the good stuff?
-
Arch Enemy played pretty much what you'd expect them to play.
So, classics like The Immortal, Angelclaw and Demonic Science were not in evidence. However, all my favourite newer tracks got a look in, except for Leader of the Rats.
Which kinda sucks as thats probably my favourite song with Gossow.
-
But the question is: Did they play Silverwing?
Pleeease tell me they played Silverwing.
Or at least Ravenous or Burning Angel.
-
COB's old stuff rules listen to Tokyo Warhearts their live album, "Lake Bodom" is insane on it.
-
Wow, I need to drink some more coffee...I read that as "Tokyo WalMarts" the first time...
