Title: Fall/Autumn/Halloween Mix Tape Exchange
Post by: jcknbl on 05 Sep 2006, 22:25
Yes its that time of year agains, the leaves turn, crops are harvested and QC forum-goers again exchange mixtapes.

Instead of voting on the method for deciding who gets tapes from who I see no reason for not doing it both ways. That is if two people want to exchange tapes they just declare so here. Anyone who doesn't want to do that can just say they want to participate here and whoever organizes this (grudgingly, me, if no one else volunteers) will pair all those people off. Best of both worlds.

The topic for the mixes can be Fall related or not. Halloween themes are encouraged because Halloween is awesome.

So anyways post if you want to partake and if two people decide they want to be mixtape buddies- make that clear. This thread is also for suggestions and making awkward requests to be other people's mix buddies (its like prom but a lot cheaper) .

*If you sign up please actually make a tape.

I'm in, but if you can forgive such a n00bian question - are we actually making them on cassette tape?  or will a cd suffice?

Everyone does CDs. But if you want to do an actual tape that would be really really awesome.

My theme? None of the above.
But it looks like it'll be a bloody impressive one! The sleeve right now has about 14 pages.
I'll post no more spoilers, but it's gonna be interesting.

Edit:(It's still about the same shape and size as two jewel cases stacked ontop of eachother, and will have a signed photo thrown in. This time, the mix will be finished before most people start, and insured the FIRST time I mail it. No mistakes this time, I don't want to become that guy who's mixes never arrive.)

As far as partners go...
I'll start bugging people in gabbly until I find somebody.

The thing about this partner system, is that it reminds me of gym class in school.
I was the really skinny kid who didn't like sports. Always the last to get picked.
By the time all the cool kids had chosen their partners, I was always paired up with the sweaty fat kid who can't run or catch a ball.

Yay! Considder me signed up, again. Also, I would have to agree with Spinless, choosing partners also takes out the fun of getting and making a mix tape/cd.

Post by: Spinless on 06 Sep 2006, 08:10
No, it doesn't. If you get a good partner you can agree with or have fun with, it's still awesome. It's trying to get that sort of partner that is the hard part.

I'll organize this with jcknbl.  Post here if you want to be put in the random pool for mix tapes.  Also post if you know who you want to trade with, but still want to participate or like jcknbl said if you are asking someone to be your mix buddy.  Let me suggest the following:

(1) When you post to participate in the mix exchange, indicate your location.  To the extent that it's possible, we will set people up with other people near them to save on postage.

(2) This time around, we will try to make so that the person who you are preparing a mix for will prepare your mix.  I think that this will cut down on the number of people who don't end up preparing mixes.

(3) Please prepare a mix if you say you are going to.  If you can't afford postage and burning a CD, say so.  You can trade with someone over yousendit or something.

(4) Please post a review, reaction, what have you, to the mix you got.  It doesn't have to be long or go track by track, but it is gratifying for the person who sent you the mix to get some sort of feedback.  In the review post, please include a track list.

(5) If you see a track list that you like, feel free to pm or post a request for the album to be uploaded over yousendit or something.  Of course, it's up to the guy who sent the mix tape to decide whether he or she actually wants to do it, but I think a lot of people here like to share their music far and wide.

(6) Deadlines:

The deadline for posting here to participate in the process is September 21st.

We will post a list of who is set up with whom, by October 1st.

Please try to send out your mixes by October 21st, but feel free to send them out earlier.

Please try to review your mix by the end of November.

This cool with everyone?  Thoughts?  Feelings?  Suggestions?  Post away.

Spin, if you're in Britain, I'm from Britain as well, so we could pair up? I was going to go for a Winter theme, or maybe an autumn theme, or possibly no fucking theme. It'll most likely spill over to two discs.

I was the slightly chubby short kid with the speach impediment, I feel your pain. My guess is most people won't bother choosing a partner anyways. This is only a one time thing, if it actually ends up being a problem we'll change it back for the winter mix. Lets just experiment, see what happens.

(Plus one of the more active posters on this forum just offered to partner up with you and make you a two disk mix. So, it looks like its working out.)

disclaimer: you might want to pair me with someone who has a very broad taste in music since this mix covers many genres.

Title: Fall/Autumn/Halloween Mix Tape Exchange
Post by: El Opium on 06 Sep 2006, 21:40
Hmm, I wouldn't mind doing a 'hats' themed mix but since all I have is the song "Matching Hat and Beard" by The Stumps it would probably result in my formation of the bands "The Magic-Hat Prisoners" and "The Stone Cowboy Hats" for the sole purpose of creating a split C90 in an edition of one for the (un)lucky recipitent.
On the other hand I would quite enjoy doing a conventional mix. I don't know anyone on the board well enough to pair up with them, but I can provide some criteria for what I can make and what I wouldn't mind recieving.

Stuff I can make:
-A lo-fi DIY skrong explosion
-Droning Blissfullness
-Very noisy noise (rock)

What I would like to recieve:
-No-fi black-metal or grindcore
-Experimental oddness
-Folk that falls far from the coffee-house

If anyone is interested in what I have to offer please say so. Otherwise I will go into the random pair-off.

Post by: Praeserpium Machinarum on 06 Sep 2006, 21:57
I am taking about the same stance as Storm Rider with the addition that any potential partner of mine would have to accept absolute shite artwork because I use way more time on tracklisting and non-visual concept.
Ask Opium since he got mine last time with a concept story about trolls and fairies.

Location:
Jutland
Denmark
Europe
Earth
Solar System

My mix will be:
scandinavian etnocentricism
the odd side of indie rock
all manner of stray dogs.

I would very much like:
experimental stuff of any kind
more hippies!
Jazz, classical, world music.

I'm all for a randomperson...

My mix will probably be more hardcore/metal/punk sounding stuff...so I should probably be paired up with someone who at least doesn't mind that sort of thing.  I'm going to focus less on having a theme; instead (if I can pull it off) I want to try to tell a story of some kind.

Anyway, this sounds like fun, so count me in for sure!

The Look People - More Songs About Hats And Chickens:

Men Without Hats - Greatest Hats:

As well as the following singles:

Niswander - Hats
Acoustic Alchemy - Hats of Magic
The Glaciers - Hats Off
Nils Lofgren - Heavy Hats (I actually kind of like this song)
etc.

The question isn't "Can it be done?"  The question is "Should it be done?"

Amok, if interested in my idea and you're ok with sending stuff internationally, I'll bite.

my tentative theme is "ghosts" which I guess is a subset of Halloween.

I like a fair variety of genres, but I am a total whore for a catchy hook. On the other hand, I also love heartbreaking/creepy ballads.  I'm pretty sure 90% of the people participating could completely out-obscure me, but I'll do my best.

14. Tiger Army - In The Orchard
15. Sonata Arctica - Last Drop Falls
16. Led Zeppelin - Tangerine
17. Bob Dylan - Hurricane
18. Nirvana - Marigold
19. The Diversion - Slow As I Can
20. Morphine - The Night
21. Primus - Mary the Ice Cube
22. Thrones - Django

disc 1 is labeled as 'popular' only because most of those bands are at least fairly well known. disc 2 is 'controversial' simply because i know rap and metal dont always go over well with everyone here so hopefully this gets to someone who can appreciate it all. disc 3 is labeled 'chill' because thats exactly what it is, all the songs on disc 3 are really chill songs.

I'd be totally up for trading with Miseratur if he'd be so obliged. It might take me a while to put something together though as I'll need to paint a new cover and I wouldn't mind fixing my turntable so I can bring my vinyl collection to bear.

I'll post when I get my music back.

If anybody perhaps wanted to make a extra CD for me in exchange for a late one from me, so they'll still get a CD on time, just say so.

I'm hoping to keep the theme pretty strict, but ghosts is really specific and not quite as popular a topic as breakup songs, so it is taking some time.

And the SprungMix 2006 is complete! I hope somebody else out there enjoys house and trance as much as I do...I changed the theme of the first disc because the track listing ticked me off. Neither disc has a theme anymore, it's just music that I happen to enjoy listening to when I'm doin' stuff...Here is the track listing I guess :

Sprungmix 2006 - Disc 1

2. Somebody Told Me [Mylo Remix] - The Killers - 6:59
3. We Want Your Soul - Adam Freeland - 5:39

7. Bilingual [Dirty Mix] - Jose Nunez - 6:39
8. Speed Racer [Porno Mix] - DJ Catastrophe - 5:46
9. Jumbo - Spiller - 5:01
10. Geht's Noch - Roman Flügel - 6:10
11. Trippy Shit - Infected Mushroom - 3:27
12. Never Say Never [Radio Edit] - Vandalism - 2:30

Sprungmix 2006 - Disc 2
1. Fire In Cairo [Digitalism Remix] - The Cure Vs. Digitalism - 5:48
2. Swimming Places [Pete Heller Main Mix] - Julien Jabre - 7:19
3. Little Star [Static Revenge Mix] - The Elegants - 4:22
4. Mr Brightside [DJ Strobe New Mix] - The Killers - 5:48
5. Strangest Things [Mandy Remix] - Freeform Five - 3:18
6. We Share Our Mother's Health - The Knife - 3:15
7. Frau [Boyz Noize Mix] - I-Robots - 5:05
8. Nazis - Mr. Oizo - 3:26
9. Galvanize - The Chemical Brothers - 6:04
10. The Night - Benny Benassi - 3:54
11. Painted Black [Syntone Cut] - Alex Fakey - 3:25
12. Gamma Goblins - Infected Mushroom - 7:22
13. Chantilly Lace [Angelmuse Remix] - Big Bopper - 3:02

So yeah...Um...I hope it's the right kind of thing...

Mmm CD1 is so done. It's umm... poppy to mellow and back again, a hobbits tale. It goes like so:

The Magnetic Fields - I Don't Really Love You Anymore
U.N.P.O.C. - I Don't Feel Too Steady On My Feet
Belle & Sebastian -  Me & The Major (live)
Saturday Looks Good To Me - Alcohol
East River Pipe - Where Does All the Money Go
Paul Westerberg - Crackle And Drag (Alt Version)
Elvis Costello - Running Out Of Angels [bonus]
Frank Black and The Catholics - Coastline
Bart Davenport - Bar-Code Trees
Whiskeytown - Jacksonville Skyline
José González - Broken Arrows
Handsome Family - The Forgotten Lake
The Beta Band - I Know
disco inferno - summer's last sound
Mr. Bungle - Sweet Charity
The Boy Least Likely To - I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon To Your Star

Now... CD2 the punk CD...it's not getting posted. It's the suprise for whoever gets it. Can't show all the cards, that's just not right.
Also the artwork isn't done.. but oh, it will be...it will be.

Ideas are a bit nebulous at the moment, but I'm thinking something along the lines of the transition from summer to autumn, and the parallels that can be drawn with the changing of the seasons and the changing of lives.

Highbrow, huh? I warn people, my mix is less likely to have completely off the wall bizzaro unheard of stuff, but will be meticulously compiled.

Location is Bristol, UK.

I just burnt the blue disc off onto a CDRW for me to test drive. I REALLY like it. It  took just short of 13 hours to choose all the tracks, but I think it payed off. Whether I invest that much time and effort in the orange disc remains to be seen.
If I keep going at the speed I was going today, I might have all the artwork done by october. That's good time!

I am reasonably sure I have finalized the tracklist for Amok's mix. Now I just need to figure out something to do for the album art. I am not what you might call visually-oriented.

Eels - Friendly Ghost
Bishop Allen - Ghosts are Good Company
The Gothic Archies - City of the Damned
Ted Leo / Pharmacists - I'm A Ghost
The White Stripes - Little Ghost
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes - (Ghost) Riders In The Sky
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Ghost of Stephen Foster
The Decemberists - Eli, The Barrow Boy
Devics - Ghost
Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad
Peter, Paul and Mary - Don't Go Down to the Quarry
Susan McKeown - Dark Horse On The Wind
Bjork - Ancestors
Neutral Milk Hotel - Ghost
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Ghost In The Radio
The Unicorns - Sea Ghost
Mick Jagger and The Chieftains - The Long Black Veil
Rufus Wainwright - In A Graveyard
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - The Lyre Of Orpheus
Neko Case - Ghost Wiring
Papa M - The Unquiet Grave

I took some thematic liberties in the name of awesome.

oh, I was skeptical at first, too. I am pretty lukewarm about Me First and the Gimme Gimmes at the best of times, but basically the song is a lot of fun and I can't seem to dislike it.
I like a lot of crappy music, but my tolerance for snotty punk is much lower than, say, cheesy pop, so maybe it cancels out.

Post by: GamerMunkie on 07 Oct 2006, 20:39
Right...Well...Having grown tired of waiting I throw this proposal at you all :

Who wants my SprungMix? It's 2 CD's and the track listing is completely different to the one I posted earlier.

The first CD is called "The House One" and tells the story of a kid who has just arrived at Uni (or College as you in the U.S. call it) who has been cloistered all of his/her life and discovers things such as alchohol and sex, however they have no moderation and things quickly become hollow and empty for them.

The second CD is called "The Chill One" and, whilst has no specific story of its own, exists to take the user on a journy throughout their mind, into space, across the globe, and everywhere else...

So yes...If ya wanna know the track listing just ask me. I can't send you anything from Australia because I'm too poor to afford that kinda thing but I'll get some timtams and eat them for you...

I'll possibly have to post it up somewhere for you to download, and then you have to burn it before you listen to it...BEFORE is VERY important...Also...It's very VERY important to burn it disk at once so that there is no gap in between songs

All of them? Are you serious? JWH is wank. I haven't even heard all of Nashville Skyline, but 'Lay Lady Lay' is hardly promising.

Nah, it's a disc for each day of the week, assuming a particular event takes place on each of those days. It's ridiculously lame, but it makes me spunk.

erm, if you guys are waiting on moiche for something i'm pretty certain he isn't coming back to the forums.

sorry folks.

What?? Why?

Praeserpium Machinarum told me he's leaving too (I'm going to send him an email about it). What the hell?

'john wesley harding' is one of his best albums. it just has the unfortunate task of following three of the greatest albums of all time.
listen to it again sometime and tell me which song is bad. 'as i went out one morning'? 'all along the watchtower'? 'down along the cove'? i think not.

'The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest.'

Quote
i'll agree that 'nashville skyline' isn't fantastic and let's just pretend 'self portrait' never happened for the good of us all.
however, the seven albums i was referring to were -

1963 - The Freewheelin'
1964 - Another Side Of
1964 - The Times They Are A Changin'
1965 - Bringing It All Back Home
1965 - Highway '61 Revisited
1966 - Blonde on Blonde
1967 - John Wesley Harding

if you want to argue that there is a bad track on these albums then i haven't found it in twenty two years of looking.

Outside of that, I appreciate that Blonde On Blonde is a masterpiece but it's not exactly my favourite. I tend to cut it down to a single vinyl disc.
Title: Re: Fall/Autumn/Halloween Mix Tape Exchange
Post by: Thrillho on 08 Oct 2006, 12:15
I know what you mean about the early two. I think that by Blonde he's bored with his new direction, sick of the bitching for going electric. I think the two predecessors are magnificent. In particular, I think that Bringing It All Back Home is probably his best album, even if it's missing his greatest song ('Rolling Stone'; what else?) because it shows both sides of him, the electric surrealist and the political acoustic songwriter. It's just brilliant, his finest fifty minutes.

Completed mixes for Drick and Yelley, I'll be mailing them out as soon as I have money, and uploading images here and to the  blog (http://maketapesnotwar.blogspot.com) when I can be bothered to take the pictures.
Also, Ian has posted a neat looking case on the blog. Don't know anything about what's on it, but if there's no claims on it in a week, it's MINE.
Oli said he's finished his too, but just hasn't posted it because he has no pictures.
Also, Oli, I haven't mailed yours out yet because I don't have money. Hang tight.

Er, shit. Sorry guys. I've had a hell of a two weeks. I sort of hoped someone would just take the initiative and pair people since the list was in my last post (also bad luck that both Moiche and I drop off the face of the Earth at the same time). Here are pairings. I took Johny and DarkFlame out. Anyhow, I apologize.

Reno
Lukeypoo

Tokuma
Logosmonkey

Khar
sAm_vdP

GamerMunkie
Filk

Valrus
Alarra

Iamyourpirate
asyluman

Flag of fire
10101110

Slick
vegkitkat

Dynamite Kid
Count_Zero

And if Moiche really isn't coming back that means I'd be free to swap mixes with someone. If someone didn't get onto the list or if I forgot someone I'll switch with them.

I hope i'm not pulling a Rivers Cuomo here.
Title: Re: Fall/Autumn/Halloween Mix Tape Exchange
Post by: Spinless on 18 Nov 2006, 23:03
I did that too.
I decided I didn't like Drick's mix, deleted it, and started again with a new 'theme' in mind. Still using the same artwork, but the 'blue/orange' colour HAS to go.
I MIGHT include the original mix that I already burned off if I'm feeling brave. But really, it's mostly awful. There's some neat things and some tracks bleed into eachother really nicely, but then there're awkward moments or songs that ruin a mood.

On a related note, I have (Five English pounds). I can afford to send out one of the UK based recipients. But WHICH?
Oli, Roderick...
Fight to the death.

Edit: What's going on with symbols on the forum? They often just pop up as question marks.

Edit 2: I need to get these out in the open so I can't hide from them. Keep bugging me about these ones guys.

1) Our dearly departed and much missed Mischa still does not have his replacement mix from the SUMMER. Fortunately, I still have his address.
2) Yelley does not yet have her mix yet. It is my favourite mix that I have made too!
3) Valley_Parade is awaiting his (still not quite finished) mix.
4) Red/Manda should be recieving a hand crafted pop-up book from me. I haven't even started construction yet, it's gonna be a time eater.

That was an odd place to leave the thread. What did you do with it?

Bumped because I have to post pictures of the mix I made for Drick, post pictures and a review of the mix Drick made for me and post a gift.
Drick SHOULD be able to post a review of the mix I made for him. Surely a lot of you have gotten your mixes by now, where the hell are all the pictures and reviews?! That's my favourite part about these threads!

I uploaded a little 14 track mix to box.net, it's a little bit fun, and definitely worth checking out if you haven't heard most of the songs before.

It's called Tropical Punch and you can get it here:
http://www.box.net/public/f8j34zzyes

In order to make this thread last, I think you should all review it.

Alrighty. Here is Darryl's mix review (in two parts, one part for each disc). And by god it's a good one: the mix as a whole was well-pieced-together, the songs complimenting or contrasting each other with a real musical oomph to the whole thing.

Disc 1 - Lets! Go! Shopping!

1. Katonah - Apollo Sunshine : A strange little synthy number, in fact, more of an introduction than a song in its own right. But very odd: I keep thinking I hear bits of songs by the Octopus Project or some similar band, when in fact, it is doing that amazing thing of making you associate the music you are hearing with music you know you like.

2. The Plan - Built to Spill : very upbeat. rock but with a touch of informed lyric... I like it, but I'd have a hard time explaining quite why. it's... it's the gunshot drum rolll that punctuates each section of the track I think. I'm not sure.

3. Oceanbound - 764-Hero : I didn't really understand this one. Although I like it, and it's a perfectly good smoothie rock song, I thought the sudden downturn in tempo didnt suit the start of such a bouncy mix... still, I love the chorus section with "turn around... oceanbound..." sliding out into the microphone, to the rhythms behind it.

4. A.M. 180 - Grandaddy : So great. I love the 80s-videogame-esque intro, I love the chord accompaniment, I love the melody, I love the lyrics, I love its wacky-tube bridge, I love its lively but angry tone. Technically, I already knew this song, though only from snatches I caught played on TV or at sixth form college - but it didnt change the fact, that when heard all the way through, it was purest awesome.

5. So Begins Our Alabee - Of Montreal : This starts very glitchy, and I was considering even skipping it, but then this weird fruity synth bass line came in, and then Of Montreal start singing harmonies, and everything was alright. I especially like the "little friendly abject failure" line. The chorus, I'm afraid to say, is sort of grating.

6. Fair Touching - Guided by Voices : changga changga pseudo-drumacoustica, yes, but of a very high quality. The melody is nice to listen to, and I enjoy it. It feels... I think, much like the middle of the band's repartee, where they are keeping everyone ready and lively before the big ending.

7. Dynamic Calories - Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks : There was something very nice and gentle about this record that I had a hard time putting my finger on, especially as the music itself isn't particularly quiet or gentle ... I have a strong feeling it is something in the vocalist, that he sounds like whatever he is saying is intensely important but, hey, don't worry about it.

8. Debaser - Pixies : The first grinding, bittersweet vocal hits your ears and you know it's Pixies. I love this song, and the band, from very good memories of 'Where is My Mind' at parties. This is a song that is perhaps more grindy than that one, but still, the melody is a good thing indeed.

9. One Heavy February - Architecture in Helsinki : feels like it ought fall under the twee pop genre heading, but only shares its aesthetic. This little instrumental is different - it's puppies with mullets.

10. Seems Fine - The Concretes : God, I love this vocalist. The band's Swedish roots are very very subtle but just tangible under layers of gorgeous fruity riffs, electro thuds and that beautiful voice. I can?t get enough of her.

11. Huddle Formation - The Go! Team : Very funky, and very... very school! Can something be just "school"? It's not old school, it's not nu skule, it's just - school. It's popular, but not cloyingly so, and with a funk element that is easily traced under the crazy noise-pop and cleverly used playground chants.

12. The Body Says No! - The New Pornographers : If this had to be a genre, it'd be 'Fuck'. It's funk, it's rock, but there is also this Nena-like 99 red balloons thing to Newman (the main writer guy)... it's very good, whatever it is.

13. Set Yourself On Fire - Stars :  Rushed tempo, but the fast pace adds this fervour to it which actually compliments the bleep bloops really well, and the vocals are nice and... floaty. Actually, it reminds me a huge amount of that Super Mario Bros level in space with the stars and the bubblegum pigs. I always liked that level.

14. Remember Me - British Sea Power : very epic and winding. but then, I've had a little place for British Sea Power for a while now. This track feels like Heroes + The Smiths ^ 80s rock = awesome. And the breathy vocals just make it, too.

15. Speak Slow - Tegan & Sara : Crikey! After British Sea Power, the "ah-ow!"s and chaka chaka maraca guitar are like a little black power coffee, with caffeine pill chaser! Very up and grr!

16. On To You - The Constantines : I've always had a soft spot for a throaty growl, and this song is a throaty growl set to some melodic Springsteen guitar which is really breathless and hot. I really like where all the background melts away and there is just the vocalist huskying at us, then we are led back into the riff gently, and then ... blues ... bourbon whisky melody ... bitterness ... boom! Ending!

17. Hot Air Balloon - Apollo Sunshine : Light and free. This last track fits just right, like a jukebox saying goodnight, there are little country guitar whine-outs, that work completely brilliantly with an opera rock middle, leading into xylophonic percussion work... it's like being inside a young kid's mind, almost, experiencing everything through night time sounds, except the young kid is going to sleep above a downtown bar and the country jukebox and electro band are still playing way past bedtime. Finally, we zap into an electric dream, all neon-bright primary colours and eternity background. And, like all dreams, the track ends in a pensive fizzle.
