Title: Second best Velvet Underground album?
Post by: minkles on 08 Sep 2006, 18:24
Okay, so, a couple of months ago, I finally picked up The Velvet Underground and Nico.  Now, after a couple of months of listening to it at least once a week, I crave more, MORE!  What album should I get next?

White Light // White Heat is better than Nico.

Except it totally is. You see, pretty much every song Nico sings on? With the exception of I'll Be Your Mirror, they are all pretty terrible. There are good tracks, some meh tracks, some great tracks, and some horrible. As opposed to White Light // White Heat, which was pretty much all incredamazing.

Also.

Sister Ray.

The second best VU album? Easily "The Velvet Underground & Nico", "The Velvet Underground" is first.

I disagree.  All the songs on VU and Nico are incredamazing, even "All Tomorrow's Parties".  Maybe

I'm thinking White Light/White Heat right now, because everyone seems to really love it or hate it, and I usually find myself in the former category on such things.  Also, I can't resist an album with a 17 and a half minute song.

Any love for "Loaded"?

I agree with Kai. You already have the second best. Go get WL/WH, and in the meantime enjoy this excerpt from Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History Of Punk.

Quote
JOHN CALE: Lou was very full of himself and faggy in those days. We called him Lulu, and I was Black Jack. Lou wanted to be the queen bitch and spit out the sharpest rebukes of anyone around. Lou always ran with the pack and the Factory was full of queens to run with. But Lou was dazzled by Andy and Nico. He was completely spooked by Andy because he could not believe that someone could have so much goodwill, and yet be so mischievous - in the same transvestite way that Lou was, all that bubbling gay humour.

Lou tried to compete. Unfortunately for him, Nico could do it better - Nico and Andy had a slightly different approach, but they outdid Lou time and time again. Andy was never less than considerate to us. Lou couldn't fully understand this, he couldn't grasp this amity that Andy had.

Even worse, Lou would say something bitchy, but Andy would say something even bitchier - and nicer. This would irritate Lou. Nico had the same effect. She would say things so Lou couldn't answer back. You see, Lou and Nico had some kind of affair, both consummated and constipated, during the time he wrote these psychological love songs for her like "I'll Be Your Mirror" and "Femme Fatale."

When it fell apart, we really learnt how Nico could be the mistress of the destructive one-liner. I remember one morning we had gathered at the Factory for a rehearsal. Nico came in late, as usual. Lou said hello to her in a rather cold way.

Nico simply stood there. You could see she was waiting to reply, in her own time. Ages later, out of the blue, came her first words: "I cannot make love to Jews anymore."

White Light/White Heat is awesome, particularly if you liked the louder/noisier/more experimental tracks. I am pretty fond of the third album, but unless you want songs that are (for the most part) even quieter than the first albums quietest moments, you probably will want to save it for last. It took a while for me to get into it (except for the Murder Mystery, which I fell in love with immediately), particularly after White Light/White Heat.

Other option: you could get the Live 1969 albums. Pretty awesome, and the sound quality's as good as anyone could have expected. I wouldn't recommend Max's Kansas City due to the worse sound quality and the absence of Moe Tucker, but it's worth picking up at some point. The Quine Tapes are the best in performance quality if you ask me, but the sound quality sucks, so I'd wait until you've got some more stuff (live and/or studio) until you get it. But do get it, because it's really great once you get past the bad sound quality.

Final option: if you have the money, either sell the first album or give it to a friend, and then buy the box set. I haven't heard the extras myself, but they're supposedly really good.

1) White Light/ White Heat
2) Nico
3) Loaded

the 'Velvet Underground' album is boring, meandering and a chore to listen to.

Music sucks.  Why doesn't it have moving pictures like television?

VU and Nico is definatley not their best album.

I'd say it prolly goes something like:

1) White Light//White Heat
2) The Velvet Underground
3) Velvet Underground and Nico

..never listened to Loaded, should get around to getting that.

Chronological order makes sense. You're gonna get them all eventually anyway.

Also. Kai, are you suggesting (and I think you are) that 'All Tomorrow's Parties' and 'Femme Fatale' are "terrible"? Because I will, like, fight you and stuff.

I am suggesting they are not very good because Nico is a terrible singer.

I do like the backround chorus of Femme Fatale alot though. SHE'S A FEMME FATALE said in the most disinterested, monotonous voices? yes plz

That is the most obscene thing I have ever heard. She is not a terrible singer but I'll grant you that she was terrible with the Velvets.
On her own she is fantastic!

I MADE ITUNES PLAY IS THIS IT 200000 TIMES SO THAT I WAS THE BIGGEST STROKES FAN ON LAST.FM AND THEN I POSTED MY LAST.FM CHART ON MY MYSPACE PAGE.

I LIKE THAT ALBUM BECAUSE IT IS VULVALICIOUS.  I DON'T HAVE A WHITE BELT, SO WHEN I LISTEN TO IT I WRAP A WHITE RUBBER BAND AROUND MY FINGER.

I say get them in order, and think they range from best to least in chronilogical order, except The Velvet Underground might be tied with WL/WH.

I don't really like Loaded that much, it's okay, but eh.

This is a lame way to say what your opinion is. Nobody reads it and goes "Yeah, this dude is hardcore." They either ignore it, or think you are lame.

KM, clearly you do not understand the game of rank!
the idea is that for one post only, you are the biggest authority on music in the world. everything you say is instantly right! you are definitive and a genius for just one post! then, you list the thing we are putting into rank from best to worst like so -
Quote from: tommydski
1) banana album
2) white light/white heat
3) loaded
4) the velvet underground
5) VU (compilation)

it's a fun game we play! it's not serious! relax!

KM clearly understands the game of rank, Tommy. You have simply forgotten about the, "call people out on their rhetoric", stipulation. It instantly negates the authority of all rank game decisions made by the offender, and increases ego by +5 EP. A poster can trade his Ego Points during flame wars and troll battles for instant victory. A very important part of the game, Tommy. You should fully acclimate yourself with the forum handbook.
