Title: How do you discover new music?
Post by: Garcin2 on 17 Sep 2006, 17:03
By which I mean, new to you?  I get asked this question a lot by friends of mine who are very into music, play instruments themselves, but because of who they hang out with and the types of places that they work, aren't really up with who's playing the smaller venues, and what's news in Williamsburg.

(Yes I know this thread has been done many times before.  I figured a new discussion would be better than necroposting)

Me:

(1) Friends.  Duh.
(2) Music blogs.  My favorites: www.brooklynvegan.com www.chromewaves.net
(3) Kinda 'zinish sites. My favorite: www.tinymixtapes.com
(4) This forum, Jeph's RL list, QC, and Jeph's commentary
(5) Last.fm.  Listening to your neighbor's music is crazy fun for the true music nerd.
(6) OiNK.  Wow.  That site is so good.  There are so many different ways to discover new music, from the "also downloaded" feature, to the forum, to the "most active" top 10 list, which is how I find out about leaked albums when they leak.
(7) Openers at shows.  Chances of me liking a first opener for one of my favorite bands: 5%.  Chances of me liking a second opener for one of my favorite bands: 33%.  Add 20% if the opener is a label-mate of the main act.

You?

Sometimes when I'm downloading off of someone through Soulseek, if I'm getting a really fast connection to them, I'll browse the rest of their files and see what looks interesting.  For the heavier stuff, I put a lot of stock in Decibel magazine and Lambgoat.com's reviews, and then of course I've gotten a few new bands to check out through this forum.

I trust the forumites here. It has been on the recommendations of people here that have led me to music I can really get excited about. I'd say my largest problem is that I'm afraid to ask for further recommendations, so I have to do some exploring to find new music.

1.  Music forums. Generally not this one, as I have different tastes from most people on here. More like garagepunk.com or a handful of rockabilly, psychobilly, punk, etc forums.

2. My local record shop, the mighty Reckless Records.  (Yes, I still buy music. How quaint!) If it's in the rockabilly/garage/surf section, there's a good chance it's good. Plus they let you preview before you buy, which helps in finding quality soul or jazz.

3. Band name. Silly, I know, but generally if a band name has "Thee" in it, it's good. See: Thee Headcoats, Thee Fine Lines, Thee Mighty Ceasars, and a million other great bands.

4. Label. If it's on Norton or Crypt, it will make it onto the list.

5. Friends. Either friends saying "hey, listen to this" or a friend saying "hey, my label released a new album, why didnt you buy it yet?" or something like that. Also, I will listen to whatever record finds its way into my mailbox. I don't know how they get my addy, but hey, free stuff.

6. Opening bands. Rare, but you luck out sometimes.

7. Compilations. 30 songs for 10 bucks? Sign me up. Usually can find a few good bands on one of those.

another is my dad he is constantly buying unknown albums cause he has that kind of money and ofen with pretty brilliant results
supporting acts for gigs or random in house bands nothing like the heady fragerence of a musty bar to influence your taste in music
and my number one favoutie (in australia) would have to be the Js
Triple J to be prcise best damn radio station in Oz ^_^

Then I go buy that music along with two or three more albums recommended to me by the guys who work at the music shops I go to regularly.

Or I like a band and I find out it's influences.

Or a friend recommends and I download.

Sometimes a random one gets in there from reading a review or something.

A combination of wikipedia, and friends.

I often end up looking more into bands that have covered songs or have had songs covered by bands that i've listened to.
..And bands that have or have had members that are in or have been in bands i listen to, or have toured with or been inspired by.

That's something I've been kind of curious about actually.  Are Figurines, The Envelopes, and Mew omnipresent where you are, on billboards and radio, or do you actually have to be somewhat clued in to what's happening in the music world to be aware of them.  Because here, they're practically invisible.

- commercials. they've finally started using good music for commercials.
- mixtapes from other people. a few of my friends and i really enjoy making and exchanging cds and we all know a different variety of bands. i guess this counts as friends, too.
- the radio, when i actually listen to it. we've got a good local alternative station and another where i can get a decent pop fix.
- this magazine i get called Relevant. (it was a christmas present from a friend.) they review bands i like, so when there is a band i haven't heard of and they give it a nice review, i sometimes look them up.
- the free songs on iTunes. sometimes, though, the freebie is a genre i don't really like, but they put up stuff from all genres. and facebook is doing this thing with Apple where you get 25 free songs every week. it's pretty sweet.
- this forum and comic sometimes.

Mew is very popular in Denmark. They broke into the mainstream around Frengers and the new album was very well received. Zookeeper's Boy was/is a big hit around here. In the short radio version of course. Figurines is less popular and more indiesque but do get some press in the major Danish music mag Gaffa. There is a radio programme called Barometer which is pretty much the indie hitlist in Denmark. They have threaten to close it several times but every time the community surrounding it has twarted the decision. But I don't particular listen to Barometer, it is a bit teenagey. I write for Geiger which is a niche mag about all sorts of experimental and underground music.
I don't know the Envelopes and have never seen any press on them. That I can recall anyway. The Blue Van, however, have receive some press and I understand that they have toured in the USA.

Oops never mind, Envelopes are Swedish.  Please don't hit me.  (They still rock though.  Sound a lot like Of Montreal.  Saw them open for Ratatat, and if they had been playing their instruments they probably would have been almost on par with the headliners).

Never mention King Diamond and Lars Ullrich in the same sentence again.

Also, bastard. Doing (brief) research into whether I liked any other Danish musicians, I found out that Henrik Flyman (who is Swedish, apparently, but has played in some Danish bands) is no longer a member of Wuthering Heights, which makes me a sad bunny indeed. I don't know which track to listen to and feel crap first.

Oh yeah I do. LAND OF OLDEN GLORY!

Ok I am listening to Blue Van now, and they are fantastic.  Just totally beyond expectations.  I can't believe this stuff is coming out of Denmark.  Is this mainstream or obscure there?  Because half of it sounds like garage, and the other half sounds like Beach Boys.

It doesn't have so much of the obscure stuff (being a metal fanatic this means virtually any band that doesn't come fron an english speaking country); but it does have a lot of music for ANY genre. Provided it is in English, of course.

Most of my friends are pretty mainstream, (actually, compared to the QC audience, I'm probably pretty hopelessly mainstream, too) so I don't tend to have anyone to discuss music with.  The last few months, all of the new stuff that I've found has been through Pandora.  I'm also thinking about signing up for the free eMusic trial and just getting reckless.

Go to music store. Go to desired genre of music.  Start in alphabetical order and look for a name or album cover that catches your eye. Preview Music.  Debate on wheather it is good for your ears. Purchase Cd. go home.  Repeat cycle in a few days time.

OR

get some people to around here to give you some ideas.  They are generally good.

Reading the linear texts of some album and seeing a name, and me going, "Hmmm, I wonder who that is?" and then I look them up, and usually it's a musician. I've discovered TONs that way. This rule also applies to interviews, or music-related articles (besides those I have mentioned already).

Add me to the list of Pandora users.  I'm a total geek, when I hear a song I like I write down the artist in a spiral notebook I keep next to Das Komputer for further investigation.

Commercials.  The Geico commercial is how I discovered R?yksopp.  Then I went on to myspace and downloaded a bunch of their stuff and someone had included a song by The Similou.

Sometimes I listen to internet radio through Windows Media Player and the Futureperfect station of Accuradio.

Reason not to post in a dead threadl:
It bumps it to the top of the first page.
Why is this bad?
Because there are interesting ACTIVE threads that are no longer getting the attention they deserve. You're filling the first page with threads that have already run their course and putting the threads that matter out of people's narrow field of vision.
Dimmukane, I'm going to assume that you've bumped 29 old and useless threads. There are about 50 threads per page.

Meh its a ressurected topic but I missed it the first time. So I'll reply

60% of the stuff I get into comes from my 2 so called "scary metal friends", well thats how my flat mates refer to them :P whom have very excellent tastes, generally when they say, you have to check out this album, or you have to see these guys when they play, I'll know its worthwhile.  They both play in bands and 1 of them has a fairly good distribution deal with a label and I guess is pretty well known round the local scene. They have an amzing collection of demos that puts my handful to shame. I don't know how they do it. They goto gigs and people throw demos at them. I'm lucky if I can get 1 demo handed to me for every 6 or 7 gigs I goto, they'll sometimes get 3 or 4 different bands giving them cd's, It's generally like "Hey you guys rock, you have to check out our shit", The myth about getting chicks from being in a band is crap, but you do get a lot of demos :) .

20% of the stuff I listen to comes from general word of mouth hype, at gigs or on the net whatever, if I here enough positive noise about a band or an album I'll check it out eventually.

10 % comes from Metal Archives, I'll find a reviewer whom has similar taste to me and look up other albums they've rated highly.

Last 10% comes from forums and stuff, where I'll ask for reccomendations or download mp3's etc.

1. Remixes: By far my greatest musical love is electronica (mainly futurepop, ebm etc). The great thing about this genre is that nearly every damn CD has a couple remixes at the end, or a special edition with a second disk with even more remixes. You can start with one band, then check out the 2-10 bands that remixed them, then do the same for each of those bands, ad infinitum. Genius.

2. Trusty sources: If I plunder someone's download folder on soulseek for a few CDs and notice that they have a lot of stuff I like, I'll probably grab some other shit at random.
2a. Interesting names: This 'other shit' is usually bands with funky sounding names, or whose names I've vaguely heard in passing but never gotten around to checking out before.

3. Friends. Obvious. "Check out [band]." Okay!

4. Last but not least, internets. Similar artists/neighbour charts on Last.fm, bored and clicking around review sites, http://www.gnod.net (Pandora is basically shit), allmusic.com's top album lists for a new genre, random albums from Oink, etc etc.

None of my friends are into indie, so mostly either word of mouth from boards such as this one, or metacritic.  Like, if something gets a 75 or higher I'll listen to whatever they have on Myspace, if I like it I'll buy it.

Sometimes the message board parts can be annoying, because there don't seem to be any indie forums without rampant glib sarcastic mean-spiritedness.

This thread got super bumped again. Oh well.

I generally find new music with last fm, and from a few message boards. Having said that, I haven't looked for new music for a very long time. I've found the kind of music I like, I've found plenty of bands I like, now I'm just trying to complete the discography of said bands. When I am sick of all these bands I have about a hundred bands that everyones gone "OMG YOU MUST CHECK THIS OUT", so then I'll download some.

I have found good music at Amoeba (http://amoebarecords.com/). Their used CDs are dirt cheap, so it doesn't really matter if you pick up a crappy band here and there. Plus, the employees there are fantastic. You tell them a couple mainstream bands you like, and they'll point you to something else you might like that you've never heard of.

CDBaby.com - there's a lot of crap on there, but they let you stream the first 2 minutes of most songs.

Pandora.com (I've probably discovered about 75% of the artists/bands I like via Pandora)

The Bottom Forty (http://thebottomforty.com) on the local alternative radio station

MTV2's Subterranean

Suggestions/recommendations from other people

On Demand music video channels

Finding a band on the internet that I've never heard (of) and thinking "I wonder what they sound like?" and playing any clips that are available.  It's pretty easy to tell if it's an indie-rock band by the name, so I can avoid rap and country and stuff like that, that I don't like.

I also still buy CDs--I don't own an iPod although I covet one--and the best place to buy music in Portland is Music Millennium.  Last time I was there I spent over $100 on CDs and found several that I hadn't been able to find anywhere else--Bettie Serveert, for example.  (They had two Bettie Serveert CDs but I only bought one.)  I need to go again, there are several CDs I've been wanting that I can't find at the local FYE.

I like to use XMU to find interesting new bands.

Either that or Last.Fm.
That site is so useful. However, word of mouth is always a good deal.

Pretty much just our good friend E. Spaceman keeps my busy with good musics.

I just want to be down on record as saying that this is NOT a good way to find good new music! He's basically just keeping you doped up on cheap (and easy to find) drugs while he keeps the really good stuff for himself. I am quite sure of this.

I feel a lot better buying from them than, say, Amazon. Last time I asked them to send me a little message with my CD, and they sent me a card! So it's usually Amazon for the stuff I know I want, and CDbaby when I'm feeling adventurous.
