Title: NES Games
Post by: Johnny C on 15 Oct 2006, 13:20
I have an NES now and I am in the market for RADICAL GAMES. I already have a copy of Pirates! by Sid Meier, Duck Hunt/Mario Brothers, Super Mario Bros. 3, and uh, I think that's it. So what are some games I should be on the lookout for?

definitely Battle Toads, one of the hardest games that are out there

oh, and get a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game, like the second one, "The Manhatten Project"

The original Zelda and Megamans 2 and 3. The first Final Fantasy is pretty good too, but I have it for GBA so I just play it on my DS.

Good times, good times.

Final Fantasy 1
Dragon Warrior I - IV (just keep in mind that Dragon Warrior 1 is the epitomy of "Ye Olde School" with no pretty ribbons attached. It was one of the first after all. I also consider IV to be one of the best RPG's ever made.)
Battle Toads
Castlevania 1, 2 & 3 (3 is one of my personal favorite games ever.)
Legend of Zelda 1 & 2
Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 & 3
Punch Out!
Contra
Metroid
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Mega Man 1 - 6
Ninja Gaiden 1 - 3
A Boy and his Blob
Kid Icarus
Crystalis
Gradius
Maniac Mansion

and quite a few other games i can think of that were superb, and I don't have time to list before i need to be at work.

Legend of Zelda 2 was pretty bad as far as I remember. To be fair, I was like 5 at the time.

I can't really say that the second one was bad, more so that it was so different from the first

hm, how about Final Fantasy 3

Wait, wasn't FF3 for the SNES?

Unless you mean the Japanese FF3, which has never been released in English (and won't be until next month (http://www.gamespot.com/ds/rpg/finalfantasyiii/index.html)).

hm, that is a good question, I don't really know my self.  I thought it was for the NES, but I could be wrong

I'd definitely say the game was more VERY different than bad. I at least still foudn it fun when i got the collectors CD for GC, but the ending is pretty crappy.

I used to like NES and SNES, but with every generation of consoles, my retro-ness is reduced. The earliest console I can play now is N64. Stupid next-gen.

I'm still a big fan of the NES/Genesis, but after having to buy an NES twice not too long ago because they kept disagreeing with me I started downloading roms compulsively. Kinda nice, I can play tons I'd never find the cartridge for in our local store's anemic NES shelf.

Funny how an NES could fall down a flight of stairs and survive it when I was 8 as long as I blew into it, now all I have to do is look at one now to break it.

One of my favorites for sheer cheapness was Peter Pan, because you could fly over every single level without stopping to actually play straight until you fought Hook. Beatable in 3 minutes or less.

This is my list of games that I had to find for ROMS. It's funny because these are all games I owned or rented back when I had an NES, so I don't feel like I'm pirating anything I didn't pay for at one point. Killer ones in bold.

720
A Boy and His Blob
Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
Back to the Future
Battletoads
Beetlejuice
Bomber King
Circus Charlie
City Connection
Clash at Demonhead
Crystalis
Day Dreamin' Davey
Dr. Mario

Duck Tales 1 & 2
Excitebike
Felix the Cat
Flinstones 2
Friday the 13th
The Goonies 2
Guerrilla War
Jackal
Kirby's Adventure
Legend of Zelda 1 & 2
Little Nemo

Lunar Pool
Marble Madness
MC Kids
Mega Man 3, 4, & 5
Mighty Bomb Jack
Monster Party
Punchout
Rampage
Simpsons - Bart Vs. The World
Snake, Rattle, and Roll
Snow Bros
All the Super Marios
Super Off-Road
Super Pitfall
Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles
TMNT Tournament Fighters
Terminator 2 - Judgement Day

The Karate Kid
Donkey Kong Jr.
(I'm trying not to repeat any)
Dr. Chaos
Hydlide (the oldest-school RPG ever)
The Punisher

Weird huh? Now that I look back at it, it was truly amazing how much could be fixed just by blowing on it.

Never managed to get the light gun working though.

I once found a website where you could play NES games right there, through a Java program. Unfortunately, I didn't save the link, and google doesn't do anything for me. If I find it again, I'll be sure to post it.

I once found a website that mberan was talking about. (http://www.vnes.thatsanderskid.com/)

The Java emulator actually just reinforces for me how much I hated the NES. The Super Nintendo was such a better system, in terms of power, and especially in terms of games. My mouth waters with the amount of quality games released on the SNES, but I can't find one for sale for the life of me.

Touche! The problem isn't the console, though: even on eBay, the prices for decent games can be anywhere from $40-$60, which I'm not willing to pay for technology that old.
