Title: LISTEN OR DIE!! (Forced Listening, mkII)

So. I really like(d) The Forced Listening Thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,3836.1050.html).

However! It seems to die repeatedly and be constantly slipping off into the nether-regions of the forum. I thought starting a fresh one might kick some life back into it, because it really is a fun game and you get to listen to stuff you might not otherwise be exposed to, which is always a good thing. Also, it was getting a bit unweildy at 22 pages. Double also, I'm procrastinating like a motherfucker at the moment.

Anyway, the idea and rules stay the same as Khar's original:

Basically the idea is this: At the end of this post I will put a song. the next person after me will listen to this song via the magic of p2p technology, legal download, mp3 shopping, whatever floats your boat, and give it a rating out of 10. Having given this rating, they will suggest a track of their own. The next person who wants to take part in the game will listen to their suggestion, review, and suggest their own, and so forth. The purpose is to help people discover new bands by forcing your musical taste brutally on to others and then having indignant arguments when they give your favourite song ever 2/10.

Don't suggest a track without reviewing the last track suggested.

The last suggestion in the old thread's been dead a little while now, so I'm going to kick it off with something fresh.

Doormouse -- Shark Week On Discovery (http://download.yousendit.com/3F7A8A7A4DFDB015). From his wonderful "I Heart Polka" EP.

Off you go then!

Man, I was totally just going to do this. But if I may, I would like to add a new rule to fix the problem that caused the last thread to keep dying: If you review a song, you must host your next suggestion on www.yousendit.com (http://www.yousendit.com) for it to be considered. Reviews without a linked song will be skipped.

I'm busy with homework right now, but if nobody's already taken a turn when I'm finished I'll be the first reviewer.

Looks like I'm first to review.

I'm a fan of noise music, so I liked it. I know, I know, it's not noise, but if I hear something that sounds random like that, I most likely will enjoy it. This song was more along the lines of "breakcore" (stupid genre names...ending in core @__@) like The Flashbulb.

7/10.

I pick Black Eyes- Deformative (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4B8792236FB35F1F) off of their self titled debut.

Also, if you want lyrics (as they can be hard to understand, if you've never heard them) go here (http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858524750) .

Black Eyes - Deformative

I was introduced to Black Eyes, Black Dice, Black Lips, The Black Keys, and Black Ox Orkestar all within a week of eachother at CalArts this summer (a week in which I also finally sat down and listened to a lot of Sunn O))) all the way through inculding "Black One", and got the Guapo album "Black Oni"). That all aside, I never remember which is which. But now I remember which one Black Eyes is. They're the whiney indie ripoff dickwads who I really didn't care about at all compared to other Black _____ like , which probably don't have any on here already. That said, they're not bad. In fact they're a great band to play for someone who isn't gonna hear all the things these guys totally tear up and re-glue into this stereotype-collage of retarded. Standard dancey drums, standard indie bass line, obsolete guitar, two annoying vocalists (always better than one), all this expected.

Objective stance: 7/10
Subjective stance: 3/10

Alamaailman Vasarat - Vasaraasialainen (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=FCD836B220938487)

That stomping 3/4, that beautiful cello in the middle, that pump organ line, none will ever fail to awe me.

PS. Salada: All I have by Doormouse is "Tipsy", which really isn't all that good. If you could send me more somehow, I'd really appreciate it and I've got stuff to send back if you'd like.

Thanks for giving an objective score as well as your subjective one.

I won't review the song you picked so others can participate.

(But I will say that I like it so far... :D)

No no no, that ain't how it goes. If you're still around, take it. Nobody's gonna care. As long as you keep it alive nobody is gonna give you shit. Sometimes keeping it alive involves two or three people all trading in a triangle. Sometimes even just 2 back and forth.

In that case...

Alamaailman Vasarat - Vasaraasialainen

I don't like the organ. I never have. There was just something about it. However in this song (I'll refer to it as 'this song' I'm not going to spell it out!) they make the organ sound amazing. Few bands have done that for me (for example, the only other organ I liked was in Cursive's 'The Ugly Organ') In short, they make the organ sound great in this song. I was happy to hear the cello throughout this song, as it is one of my favorite instruments.

All in all, this song sounds great, with a nice, exotic feel to it.

9/10!

Now, I pick Islands - Tsuxiit (http://download.yousendit.com/D15A6F542C46F68E)
Title: Re: LISTEN OR DIE!! (Forced Listening, mkII)

Islands - Tsuxiit

Starts out interesting with synthpop like keyboards efects and drumming, and gets into a sort of groove with a guitar. Tsuxiit has an interesting sound, but it does'nt change much, and when it does its to little too late. Tsuxiit sounds more like an interlude and not like a song. I'd try and write somthing longer but I dont really see why.
I give it a 5/10

Maudlin of The Well - Gleam In Ranks (http://download.yousendit.com/C8DD7A40041A225F)

The hardest thing about this is choosing the song to upload.

Is it alright if its not a yousendit link, but is hosted online, for free, at a perfectly reputable website?? Because that is where mine will be.? Anyways, reviewing:

Maudlin of the Well - Gleam in Ranks.
Guitar, vocals.? Almost can't hear the vocals. I think thats the point, though.? Drumwork keeps it nice and varied.? Oh wait, YAYE!? Crunchy guitar, vocals go all audible, awesome.? Theres a bass there too, but I think its being farely standard.

You know, with the whole soft then hard thing, they kinda remind of Opeth, but the distinction isn't as extreme.? Also, the vocalist reminds me kinda of Dream Theater, but not quite as awesome.? Anyways, I'd buy an album by these people if I wasn't broke.

Score: 7/10

Beatdrop, Children of the Monkey Machine, K. Praslowicz - Brinstar(DreamsInRed) (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00891/)
Thats right, its a remix of the Red Brinstar theme from super metroid, but its awesome even if you haven't heard the theme before.? Clicky on the download tab to, well, download.

EDIT: Thats what I get for quoting my linkies.  My bad.  Works now though.

(Since Splurkle's download link is broken, and I'd already written this, I'm going to pull rank and say that mine is canon.)

Maudlin of the Well - Gleam In Ranks

The song begins in a understate, minor key with breathy, querulant vocals and a flickering piano line rippling in the background. Tight percussion brings us into an increasingly forceful build-up, and the vocals take on a bleaker, stronger note as the guitars begin to screech and wail. The song stalls a little here, without an obvious climax, and closes with a bizarre little-half solo. We're left hanging rather suddenly - it's taken a long time to get through, and it's all over without having achieved what was promised.

All in all, interesting, but nothing I haven't heard before, even considering that I haven't really listened to proggy metal since I was high school. 6/10

Next person gets to review a tune by an up-and-coming Australian group. The sound quality isn't the greatest, so my apologies. Note that the lyrics are referring to the appalling treatment that Australian aboriginal people have suffered (and continue to suffer) at the hands of a government that considers them subhuman at best and animals at worse.

Anyone give me advice on this YouSendIt thing?  I just registered, but it seems to only send to email accounts?  How does that work in relation to sharing music with all you fine people?  Thanks for helping with my dumb question.

In regards to the Alamaailman Vasarat song, that is exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for lately.  Great, almost klezmer feel to it (I swear there's a clarinet in there).  Fantastic.  A bit lengthy, but good all the same.

7/10

Thanks a bunch for the advice.

Continuing on!

Blue King Brown - Water

The song definatly had a hip groove.  I love the salsa sort of feel (on a personal note, you should check out Sergent Garcia, a french band with a similar sound).  I felt like the song was repetitive, though, and a little deviod of actual creative songwriting.  It also really could have benefitted from some horns, as is to my understanding , completely necessary to that style of music.

Overall I liked the song, but I felt like they could have done better
6/10

Beirut - Gulag Orkestar (http://download.yousendit.com/F1649E9133C56B63)
Title: Re: LISTEN OR DIE!! (Forced Listening, mkII)

Beirut - Gulag Orkestar

Starts out with a slow mishmosh of horns, obviously about to get much faster, and or more intense. And then it doesn't. It gets dub. It gets klezmer-dub all over everyone's asses. Majestic horn line over clunking, mistuned piano gradually plods into a vocal section that is really really good. Vocals drop out, then come back in, this time with actual lyrics, though I can't make em out for shit. The ending is real good, just that clanky piano scooting out.

7/10 for being a decent song with a few nice, unexpected twists.

Next up, some of the most enjoyable music there is, no matter who you are.

Luke Vibert & B.J. Cole - Fly Hawaii

Aloha, Sponge-Bob Square Pants puts down a chilled number. Very enjoyable. Opens out with some laid back ukulele and procedes to lay a nice break over the top with an ample sprinkling of cheeky xylophone action, nice happy little track.

The next track is for non-aussies, trying to spread the word about the Pandas.

The Panda Band - Musical Chairs

Well I'm Australian, but 've never heard of them before, so I downloaded it anyway.

At first I didn't really like it, grew on me with a couple of listens though, starts pretty slow gets good at about the 1:30 mark when the organ comes in.  The singing annoys me, just not my thing, the instrumental breaks are really good though, has a nice proggy sought of noodling vibe going through it, for some strange reason it reminds me a bit of Uriah Heep.  Not the sought of thing I'd buy myself but not completely horrible either.

I'd give it a 7/10

Therion - The wonderous World of Punt   (http://download.yousendit.com/30E5C9293BFBA673)

Therion - The Wondrous World Of Punt

It's by Therion. As such, the song will open with thundering chords or with a softly swelling choir. This time, we choose the latter. After a drawn-out choral period, we are treated to the gentle strumming of a clean guitar, while a pair of talented operatic-sounding voices get very choked up about... something. An airy pipe comes in, and we have to listen to uninspired skirling for a few moments before a piano starts rippling out some boring arpeggios. The song repeats in the same vein for about five minutes (which I'll never get back). Then we get the gentle-yet-forceful chords, which lead into a two-minute period of faster drumming, which is obviously supposed to get us fired up. The choir sounds pissed off now, vengeful! A Scandinavian voice sings soprano, in counterpoint to some tenors (who sound, frankly, constipated). More boring, uninspired guitarwork, and the song dies.

Verdict: Like most stuff by Therion, this sounds like... most stuff by Therion. Overlong, overwraught, and not particularly entertaining. This reminds me why I started listening to hip-hop. 3/10.

Speaking of hip-hop, the next person gets to review:

Jean Grae - Love Song.

Okay, so this is essentially an old scool song, with some rapper lady going over the top. I hate shit like this. Oh wait, changeup at :50.? The beats and use of samples is somewhat solid, if rather simple, but the rapping is shit. I've heard amatuer dudes in Canberra who were better than this. Fuck. So this goes on for like 2 minutes, and then we get 10 seconds of non-shit non-rapping, and then its back to the crap. Fuck. Rapping is more then adopting an accent, speaking in a monotone with the same rythym for the entire song. Rythmic variation = good. Fuck this Shit. I'm tempted to stop it before finishes.... Yeah, just as I thought - same rapping up to the end, save for a really crap ending where the beat keeps looping, doing nothing new, before ending abruptly - doesn't even fade.

FUCK. 1/10. That would be 5/10 if it had no shitty intro, no shitty rapping, and just a minute of beats. It is shit like this that give hip-hop a bad name.

Here's a chiptune for the next person.
Nullsleep - Her Lazer Light Eyes (ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/2003/pilgrimage03/music/nullsleep_-_her_lazer_light_eyes.zip).
Title: Re: LISTEN OR DIE!! (Forced Listening, mkII)

Nullsleep - Her Lazer Light Eyes

Do not call this a chiptune. That is a really annoying thing to do. Songs with nothing but casio presets and drum machines are a fun gimmick the first couple times, but after that, they've got to have a bit more going on to catch one's ear. This did not catch my ear at all. It was just like too many other things made on keyboards irritating tight-sweatered slicked-sideways-haired highschooler who just discovered Atom & His Package.

3/10 for not just unauthenticity, but total unoriginality.

I will remedy that piss-poor hip hop with some good ol' Roots.
The Roots - Ital (Universal Side) (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=29BB67E6476707F5)

Post by: Splunkle on 20 Oct 2006, 20:17
You know, Nullsleep did that track with nothing but a gameboy.? If that's not a chiptune, I would like to know just what the fuck a chiptune is.

The Roots - Ital (universal side)
This is much more what hip-hop is about.? For starters, the beats are very funky, and the Electric piano line is preety neat too.? The rapping is much better, with some interplay between the various rappers, some nice rythmic breaks and whatnot.? Not my ideal cup of tea, as I tend to prefer stuff with a stronger musical backing, but still very nice indeed, especially for those who love your lyrics.?

7/10

And now for some rock:

Ashane - Roes of Solemn

Not bad. The electric guitar from the 2 -4 minute mark reminds me a lot of Kirk Hammett, I think its the tone. Beginning reminds me a lot of the middle part of "Orion".

At about the 5 minute mark the tempo changes and it speeds up. When the soloing comes at about 7 minutes begins to remind me a bit of Dream Theater.

Not bad, sought of band I'd goto the pub to sit down and enjoy with a beer.

If they didn't include the little electronic whizzing in the background and didn't switch time signatures as much they'd have a really majestic pop song on their hands. As is, it's really catchy and hooky and fun ren-faire rock but it's lacking cohesion.

man, i downloaded and listened to something like the last 4 songs, but was too lazy/distracted to write anything on them before they got nicked by someone else. i actually got halfway through writing a post on the jean grae track (not bad at all, haven't heard much of her stuff before, but it's all been a bit edgier than this -- tight flows though. and i'd say it cuts out at the end cos it's from a mix. anyway, i'm sidetracked).

so anyway. jumping on this before anyone else does.

Wax Mannequin -- Animals Jump

let's see. this was odd. pretty much completely outside my regular listening whatsits (habits? yeah), which was good refreshing. lyrics made next to no sense, which was fun. lead singer's voice was kinda interesting too, went well with the not-making-sense lyrics. guitar was a bit boring, honestly. started to rock out a bit more in the last 30 seconds with the drums and all, but i would have liked them to be a bit more facemelting. but i guess that's just my preferences...

i rate it  8-) out of . (that'd give it about a 7 out of ten).

moving on:

Kalyaji Anandji -- Theme From "Don" (http://download.yousendit.com/4FDC9DAD19A321F8)

i had something else in mind, but then this came up randomly on shuffle and i remembered how badass it was.

Dang. I'm about one post too late....I absolutely love Wax Mannequin, and Animals Jump is one of my favourites of his. I make almost everyone I know listen to it...but anyways, reviewing the song I'm supposed to...

Kalyaji Anandji -- Theme From "Don"

Badass indeed! In general, I don't like horns (too much bad ska and listening to my friends rehearse have ruined me) but they're glorious here, and the little groove in the background is pretty irresistable. I've got it on repeat now. 9/10 (if only because I pretty much never give perfect scores. Yeah, I'm that kind of person.)

From me:
Malajube - Le Crabe (http://download.yousendit.com/8836ED3652C18A4C)

It's in French....but don't hold that against the song.

Malajube- "La Crabe"

Pretty good, and I dig the album artwork.  Soundwise, it's pretty standard power pop-type fare, the closest description I can come up with right now is like a less rocking Ted Leo.  In French.  And is that a theremin in that one part? 7/10

Sun Ra- Images

It's a bit more mellow then what I would usually listen to, but pretty cool chilled out sounding stuff. The piano towards the end was pretty good, I think it could have used a bit more variation though, it seemed to drag a bit in places.

Darkthrone-Eon
Really heavy and grinding. Horrible recording and encoding though which kind of killed it for me. Got a bit murky after the first 30 seconds. Keys were really the only thing that stood out. Not my thing, I prefer my metal cheesy and laden with noodley bits.

Now I know what you're going to say about MCR and I have to say I agree but this is actually a really good cover. It's quite similar to the original and I really cannot find fault with it. Have a listen

I expect reviews of both tracks but not necessarily two tracks uploaded in return.

My Chemical Romance- "Astro Zombies"

Yeah, it is pretty close to the original, which automatically makes it better than anything My Chemical Romance writes themselves, but also just raises the question "what's the point?"  They didn't try to do anything special or unique with it, so what's the point?  5/10

Hot Water Music- Choked and Separated:

The songs starts with some pop-punk-ish hooks which don't really change much throughout the very beginning and quickly get boring and repetitive.  The singer's voice is pretty bad too.  Fortunately, the song changes a little into it, and then again near the end, making somewhat of a 3 and a half minute punk epic.  I think I like it.  It gets pretty cool.  The beginning part sucks, though, as do the lyrics.

The Blow - Fists Up
The second the song started, I wanted to rip off my headphones to evade the annoying synth drum intro.  I was about to, but I left them when when the vocalist came in.  Good vocals, and interesting chord progression.  I eventually forgot about the percussion until they became more developed.  I kept listening, and kept waiting for the climax, or at least a chorus.  It kinda just kept droning on, but I guess that made it kinda danceable.  This song really isn't a song to listen to if you appreciate songs that create an ambience, but hell, it makes a pretty good and solid dance-pop song to groove to.

Leatherface - Dead Industrial Atmosphere
I started the song, and I liked the intro hook.  The rest of the intro went pretty good, but I was taken aback when the drums exploded into more of a punk beat at around 0:28.  Don't get me wrong, I liked the change, but I wasn't expecting it.  10 seconds later, it went back to the slower beat.  Then the process repeated about a million times.  The change was neat at first, but got tiring after the 9th time; I think the song went on a little bit too long.  The vocalist also made sure you couldn't hear him, not that he was doing anything special (only yelling).  But despite that, the music itself creats a pretty cool atmosphere filled with soaring distorted guitars and flowing hooks on top.  Pretty good if you're into psuedo-punk/metal.

Pink Floyd -- Arnold Layne

Well. Let's see here.

(queues up track, starts listening/typing).

I, admittedly, don't know as much as I should about the rock/pop canon. Didn't really grow up with it around the house and never did as much historical investigation as I perhaps should have. So i won't be all like "ZOMG FLOYD" or "OH MAN OVERRATED" because, frankly, I've never heard a lot of it.

Killer organ automatically gets points. And the buildup to a kind of "wall of sound" aesthetic in around the middle of the song is nice, although the organ kind of comes out in front later (That's ok though, since it's the organ). Occasional reverb on the drums is a nice touch. Onto a second listening. Organ is still gold. Strong point of the track, I think. Wall of sound pops back for a bit in the lat minute ? vocals seem to be mixed at the same level as the instruments, interesting texture.

Difficult to rate, really. Perfectly palatable tune with some nice points; didn't really grab me as amazing, inspiring, or revolutionary, but then maybe that's because I'm not in the 1960s, and so it's hard to gauge how it would have sounded then. But then maybe it's not meant to be any of those things. Anyway. Ranting. Let's call it a 7.5 out of 10. Average, with an extra .5 for the organ.

Right then. On we go. Unapologetically posting more breakcore. Someone has to.

Drumcorps -- Botch Up and Die (http://download.yousendit.com/FB6B99AF32318ED2). \m/

Drumcorps is an Aaron Spectre (http://aaronspectre.com/) project. I'm pretty sure it's just him, but I might be wrong. I've only just found out about his stuff a little while ago, and I really like it. Breakcore that's been constructed from grindcore/metal samples that have been sliced up, timestretched, and generally fucked around with. I'd like to see what Khar or one of the other resident metalheads thinks here, but of course anyone can grab this if they like/hate/are curious about it.

hmmm...wow...how did this track get a review like that

as far as i'm concerned grind should be hard, loud and fast... and in this case one out of three is bad because all they managed to get down pat was the fast, the riff started off at mediocre and then as previously mentioned "got scrambled to hell" leaving us with an out of time disjointed piece of music which for some odd reason has a hardcore vocalist the drumminghowever is good in the parts where some one didn't try and hack it up

He never said it was grind, just that it was made of grind samples. Besides, I really like electronic music and metal so this was a cool buzz I reckon.

EDIT: The Berzerker-Massacre
Pretty good grindcore. I like it but it's a bit repetitive for my tastes. The guitar tone is pretty weak (not taking the piss). The electronic drumbeat in the background doesn't really do anything for me...

Although I don't listen to a lot of it, I have a soft-spot for grindcore -- mainly because it's really really fast, and in a way shares some qualities with gabber/breakcore/speedcore/etc. Genre-splitting, Drumcorps' stuff is breakcore constructed largely from metal/grind samples. I think there might be some original guitar work on some of the tracks, but it's hard to tell, and I don't really fancy trying my hand at grindcore sample-spotting. And the "scrambling to hell" and "hacking up" is kind of the point. I do however realise it's the kind of stuff that doesn't float a lot of peoples' boats. Getting people to like breakcore is kind of like selling Romanian-language fluid mechanics textbooks on a street corner. Or something.

Anyway. The Nasum track.

Don't think much of the vocals really, but then I'm always like that with loud growly stuff. There's only so many ways you can be all growly before it all gets a bit same-same. Pity, it kind of gets in the way of the guitar. And i guess i'd like the drums to be more interesting sometimes (that was why the Drumcorps stuff interested me so much), but they had me tapping along nonetheless. And the whole "we-don't-fuck-around" attitude that most of this music carries -- it's up and going before the first second -- gets lots of points.

Let's say..... 7.9.

Right then. Enough of this grindcore business. I came into a big swag of French stuff the other day -- hip-hop and dub mostly, but a few other odds and ends as well -- so I thought maybe I'd share a bit of it.

Le Klub des Loosers -- Sous le signe du V (http://download.yousendit.com/807293136E04173E)
(The Losers' Club -- Under the V Sign)

It might lose a bit if you can't follow the lyrics, but it's still some nicely-produced hip-hop, and a welcome change from the (largely) horrible mainstream scene over here (guns, bitches, etc).

Kinda melodic punk-rock. Not really attention grabbing or original or even cathy, but not very annoying. Except for the vocals, who are under average, and that is saying alot when it comes to punk. Standard rock instrumentation and arrangements, and well, sadly, pretty standard songwriting. 5/10 for not being bad music, just boring.

doomy grumbly slow-beat metal, i guess.  no real rhythm.  not very interesting to listen to.  i suppose it isn't really BAD, i just... don't like it.  i do like the marching-type drumbeats/sound effects on the latter half of the song, and the synths throughout.

March Violets - Snake Dance

Intro was pretty cool, don't really like the drum beat too repetitive and is up way to loud in the mix, seems like something they'd play at a dance club or something... Vocals aren't bad. Don't really like the part in the middle where the guitars stop (normally I love keyboard sections but those drums are really annoying). After this it seems to drag a bit. Gets better around 4mins.  The end isn't that bad at all.

I'd give it 5/10 with a better drum track I'd rate it a lot higher.

Nargaroth - Herbstelyd  (http://download.yousendit.com/AA36064D44949CA1) I'm curious to see what people think of this track.

It starts slow, with an almost droney quality and this is one of the first times where a synth-choir has managed not to sound corny. Around the 1.5 mins it switches to a more screamy bit with more typical metal drumming before once again receding into synth-choir calmness. Rifing and screaming and some noodling go on for 7 minutes before it winds down to a more choppy riff and an appearance by the inescapable 'glacial sounding synth' required to be metal. It ends with the same riff that has gone on for 8 minutes and a scream.

A rather good track, 8/10 it would have probably been a bit higher if it didn't have the glacial synth and they disposed of the screams.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Between Planets
It's a catchy song, sounds very 90's. It could very well be, I'm not familiar with the band or what era they're from. I enjoy the drums in this song and really dig the interlude, it's simple but effective. And I just read up on them and I feel ignorant about not knowing who they were... but at least I do now right? Anyway, I like the progression of the song, it's pretty simple but the lyrics don't grab me in any special way.

I'll definitely look into listening to some more of their stuff, I feel that I could either really like it, or absolutely hate it.

Hmm a bit eccletic for my tastes, seems like lots of ideas never fully expanded upon, I must admit the track did grow on me after a couple of listens. I love the keyboard/piano parts. The drums seem a bit annoying, the repeated snare thing gets on my nerves a bit. I was going to give it 6 out of 10 but after a couple more listens I'll give it a 7.5 / 10.

Demons and Wizards- Fiddler on the Green

The first 3 and a half minutes are nominated by a vaguely menacing (european) folk guitar accompanied by vocals that match the mood and aesthetic pretty well. Theres some distorted guitar real low in production over parts that provides a nice texture. This gets a little repetitive but generall nice stuff- not stuff I'd listen to regularly but appreciable. This part gets a 6.5/10. Then the metal riffs and solo parts cut in and totally blow the the folky, barren but civilized aesthetic. I'll admit that metal isn't really my thing and the few things I've enjoyed have de-emphasived the generic guitar riff/solo thing I'm hearing here. But thats definitely a personal thing, I'd say 90% of guitar solos piss me off. The second half of the song brings the score to 5/10.

Hey, this is pretty cool.

Was getting kinda Cure / new wave vibes from the guitars and drums in the intro, so was quite surprised to see it was from a 1998 record. Then it turns out it was a compilation of some sort and that these guys were actually happening in the late 80s / early 90s, which makes more sense.

Pretty catchy with the high-mixed drums and the fun bassline and all. Rocks out at the end! Yeah! Never really liked songs that fade out though, seems (to me, at least) to be a sign that you can't really make up your mind about how you want to finish. Still though. I might need to do a bit of looking into these guys.

Wow, I was intensely surprised by this track.
When it started, I thought it was going to be a ska track, but then the violin came in...
It mixes some great Gypsy melodies, and traditional folk with some, quite frankly, hardcore ownage. The vocalist is pretty raw, and I couldn't understand most of what he said, but it didn't even matter.

I hope I'm rocking that hard when I'm their age.

Oh-oh. Metal. I'm not very good at metal. I'm liable to criminally under-appreciate your favourite song.

I dunno, this doesn't really sound very metal-ish, except for the general kind of depressing/minor-key sound. I like synthy stabs as much as the next guy -- probably more, in fact -- but this just seems to be taking a very long time to do something rather uninteresting.

...Woah! Way to change it up. Takes about 3 minutes 15 to get interesting. I dunno if long-drawn out intros that take up over half the song time are popular in metal, but they're taking a lot of the appeal out of it for me.

So once this gets going... I dunno. Like I said, I'm not very good at metal. All sounds kinda standard. Same chords, same growled vocals, same double-kick drums. That said, I do like double-kick drums.

I'd give the first part of the song about 3 out of 10. The second part, let's call it 7. Overall this averages out to about 5. I feel kina mean, but there you go.

Anyway, not i feel kind of hypocritical to rag on long intros then upload a song that takes over a minute to get started. Right then, I'm a hypocrite, but that doesn't matter because these guys are amazing:

Some electronic parts set a nice atmoshpere but do little else for 3 minutes. It wasn't exactly dull, but too mush build up for too little payoff. Probably works better in album context. 3 minutes in we finally get a single distorted chord and some wierd strumming and violin in the background, for about 10 seconds, then we get to the black metal. The change from mood setter to metal was pretty awkward. The metal is competent but not captivting, it is too short, a bit cheesy and too predictable. 6/10, doesn't really do it for me, but I can see the attraction it may have to others.

Edit: Too late...

Don't worry it's not my favorite song, I uploaded more for historical interest I guess you'd say, the synth part is the last thing Valfar  programmed before he died, it was originally going to be used on a Windir track. I quite like it actually, puts you in a pretty good headspace for the rest of the song that follows, but yeah to each there own.

Angel'in Heavy Syrup -- Breath of Life

Almost 2 minutes of absolutely nothing to begin with, then vague guitar melodies and chaotic drums, soon joined by an annoying vocalist. At 3 minutes the song comes to a complete stop, and starts again with an unimpressive guitar riff joined soon by more coherent drums this time. This goes on for the remaining seven minutes. Occasionally the song comes to a stop, starts again with a new riff that sound exactly the same. 3.5/10 for being as far removed from my tastes as possible.

Allan Holdsworth - Tea for One and a Half

Huh. Funky, to say the least. I like this. At the risk of sounding clich?, it's got a groove to it.

Interesting synth stuff. Huh, what's with that weird tritone that keeps coming up there? Cool, but it's a bit distracting. Still a very good track.

At least it's not repetitive. This would make good background music for... some stupid cop show that takes place in New York City. I don't mean that as a bad thing, just sayin'.

Nice solo here at about four minutes in. I don't know if that's synth-guitar or real guitar, though. And now here's a synth piano solo at about five minutes in. What's the deal in jazz that every single instrument has to have an at least one-minute solo? Not that I don't like it...

Oh, interesting ending. That was slightly out of left field.

All in all, a pretty nice track. 8/10'D!!

I like this song. The opening is really cool and the vocals sound nice.

However, I just wish that this song was a little bit longer. A minute is really kinda too short for the song to go anywhere.

But I do like the short one minute so I'll give it an 8/10

This is pretty funky, the guy's voice is differently catchy and the song's got good rhythm to it. Effortlessly upbeat, would be equally good for chilling out or dancin' a jig to. Builds to a good crescendo at the end, although maybe it could've done with being 30 seconds shorter in the middle somewhere. Anyway, good tune, if not my usual cuppa. 8 or 9/10

I am not sure how I feel about this song. Any song with a bell intro I am for, female vocalists I am for, the beat I am for, but something keeps me from fully endorsing this song. 6.93715/10
Also, the only song with a countdown in it should be Europe's Final Countdown.

Dio - Holy Diver

This was quite good, although my overall feeling is that I would have preferred it had it been a little bit faster. I normally prefer this type of metal when the pace is a little quicker.

The short one has a pretty good voice, quite powerful sounding without being overly cheesy, I liked the vocals. The solo was good too, although maybe a little too long for my liking.

I didn't like the intro, I have never been a fan of pointless sound effects as part of the song, I end up fast forwarding them to get to the actual music.

But overall not too bad, I would give it 6.5/10

Clutch - The Mob Goes Wild

I've heard a bit of Clutch's stuff before, that songs one of the better songs of theirs I've heard. I love the riffs it's very gigantic sounding has that nice crunch to them. Very Black Sabbath sounding. If it wasn't for the vocalist I'd swear I was listening to a Stoner doom band. Which brings me to my major issue, the vocals, simple put I'm not a fan at all. I don't know if he's trying to sound like Ozzy or what the deal is but the vocals don't work for me at all. 7/10, would be much higher if they ditched the singer or had him mixed less in the front.

I like some In Flames, some of their stuff is kinda boring. The intro to this is pretty cool, folky, and I love folk. The riff that comes right after that is pretty sweet too. And well, so are the rest of the riffs. Vocals growled nicely, none of the half asses sing/growl that they have been using recently. Catchy and pretty decent, every instrument doing their part pretty well, but not really mindblowing. 7/10

Ha, I'm going to do it before Khar can.  But of course, it's a black/extreme metal song.  Hmmm, not my cup of tea at all.  However, while I don't have a problem with people liking this music, I hate it when they act like it's better than stuff I listen to.

I'm writing this as I'm listening.  I'm just over 2 minutes in, and I'm not particularly impressed, but what else would you expect from a guy that dislikes black metal.  Hey, now it's kind of interesting, with a slower beat breakdown.  But god, do I detest these bands' usage of the double kick pedal.  I like the time signature switches, though; pretty neat.  Drummer's doing some interesting ride work.  Fade out to bass alone for awhile. . . still alone, now joined by guitar and bear growls.

Well, it's better than other black metal songs I've heard, but I'm still not really into it.  I don't know what a black metal enthusiast would rate this, but I give it 6/10.

Hmm. I guess this is prog? Parts of it could be called guitar rock, but then there is a violin there, bongo drums, as well as a regular drumkit. The song also has a lot of "world" music elements, the last part in particular is very exotic sounding. Gives off an egyptian vibe sort of..
I like a lot about this track, the guitar is pretty cool for the most part, and the bongos are pretty rad. Don't care much for the vocals and the bass is just there as backup. It's a 7/10 in my book, entertaining, but not what I'd listen to regularly.

Good song and pretty catchy, although overall I find it sounds like every other generic Punk-ish song. My main concern is the vocals as I personally feel they're too weak and slow for this song and it'd be far more enjoyable if it was faster and harder. I'm finding it hard tor eally review them as I've never been the biggest fan of Punk apart from The Exploited and Send More Paramedics (which is a mix of hardcore and metal anyway). This band is the reason why I've never liked much Punk as it feels way too repeative and with no real artistic value, like they picked up instruments and just played rather then thought things through.

I personally don't believe this song serves him justice as it's probably one of his worse songs but I had a hard time picking out a song, so I got someone who didn't know of Vintersorg to just pick a random number from a random album of his Prog works.
I'll probably upload one of his folk tracks in the future as since they're two different styles... you may like one but dislike the other.

Universal Supervisor - Another Day

Okay, first off, very good sound quality for an unsigned band. The drum sound and a slight compression on the vocals are the only thing that betrays it as non-professional. As for the song itself, okay. Pretty generic, but a decent riff and the slightly dancey drums are pretty interesting. I'll give it a 6/10. I could imagine these guys making it. Dunno how far, but somewhere.

Right, now for mine. If you don't like this there is no joy in your soul.

Not sure what to say about it; seems like competant but terribly interesting folk music. Maybe I'm too much a philistine but I didn't find terribly interesting. Although the "woo" noises the chorus and some of the mannerisms of the singer made me think this is supposed to be funny. So 6/10 because it made me crack a smile.

This is ridiculously bad. It has a minute and a half of announcing the song and making bad jokes. Then the song starts. And the song is really just an extremely basic chord progression played on a guitar, but the bad jokes just keep coming. Cringe-worthy. I'm sorry to give a track 1/10, but this really deserved it.

Lots of sort-of-clangy/metallic-y sounding guitars with angular rhythms typical of the current trend in "indie rock". It's better than mainstream radio rock fair, but ultimately not impressive. I give it a 6/10

Been meaning to check out these guys for awhile so I had to grab this one. Solid riffs, the vocals aren't my usual style but when the music's as solid as this, they kinda work. True hippy music here.  Chimes, bird tweets, unitelligable words coming from male and female throats, synthysizer in the background for tone, and yet it makes a good song.  It isnt a 10 minute hippy jam band session so it doesnt seem too long.

Oh wait, no, that singing is probably more annoying. No wait, the cliche rap beat is more annoying. Oh gods there's six more minutes of this and now is a good time to introduce horns?

2/10. It was gonna be 4/10 just for the pretentiousness of that timeline bit, but then the awful female vocalist kicked in and knocked two straight off again.

Okay, now, I'm going to warn you in advance. Approach this song with caution. The first twenty seconds of this song probably rock harder than half the people on this forum's entire music collections.

The progressions are neither outstandingly original nor horribly cliched. I like the mix pretty well, especially the ryhthm guitar and bass. I like the swagger of the vocals. I really have no idea where to classify this. The lead guitar is pretty cool- it's almost as if it's rhythmically independent from the beat.

Yeah the band name is Witchery, it's sought of a super group created by Patrik Jensen (from Seance and The Haunted) it has members from Satanic Slaughter, Opeth, Arch Enemy etc. You're comment sums them up pretty well, I think Patrik listened to too much Venom and Mercyful Fate one day and just got together with some mates and decided to shred it the fuck up.

You are, again, disagreeing with what I've said without considering it. I wouldn't say something like that without some basis.
I don't want to turn this into a bitchfest but consider your reaction to Jeph deleting your thread, your reaction to people liking Rise Against, SOAD etc etc, I could go and hunt out posts you've made but I don't really have the time nor the energy to do so.
I'm sure you're a perfectly nice person, your posts however are egotistical as hell. Please, just consider what you say before you post it.

(Am downloading the From Exile tracks now, shall review shortly)

From Exile-Phantom
Instrumental number that falls somewhere between Opeth and Dream Theater instrumentals. Quite technical and very very very layered. A little heavy on the cymbals in places but I liked it a lot. Nice to chill out to, very mellow. The genre tag says metal but I'm not convinced so I'll listen to the other track. 7/10

From Exile-Product of Sin
This is more metal. Sounds a bit like In Flames to me. Kinda sounds like one of those noodley metalcore bands but with a more metal style and a proper vocalist. Cool melodic interlude but again, it sounds like "generic three word name metalcore band" and I'm just waiting for someone to start singing about autumn leaves and the beauty of her face... Thankfully that hasn't happened.
Mostly good but my own exposure to metalcore has ruined this sort of metal for me. 6/10

Uploading now.

Think of X as the Japanese equivalent of Motley Crue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_japan). This track doesn't really demonstrate it but their guitarist, Hide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsumoto_Hideto), was pretty talented. There is still a huge Hide worship movement in Japan and you still see people wearing shirts with his face on them... kinda Curt Cobain-ish...

Fair enough.  However, while I'll admit that complaining about Jeph was stupid, the whole Rise Against thing was me merely me being surprised that people on this forum liked them.  I mean, I thought liking a band like Rise Against was akin to liking AFI or The Offspring.  I don't hate those bands, I was just surprised that the guy who praised RA wasn't ripped for it.  As for SOAD, I like them, so I don't know why you thought I didn't.

Oh nah, I can tolerate people bashing on AFI, just so long as they are happy to admit that Shut your mouth and open your eyes is one of the best hardcore punk records to come out of the 90s. That's hardcore punk, not hardcore.
AFi have certainly changed and I like that. Certainly their older material is a lot stronger but I did the progression. Plus their live show is fucking amazing.

I'll make this clear now, the cheesier the music is, the more likely I am to like it. If it's over the top and ridiculous I'll probably enjoy it.

Initial thoughts: Oh god, that scratching is annoying.

The first twenty seconds of this song probably rock harder than half the people on this forum's entire music collections.

ok khar i hate to say this but you can seriously do better than that the first 20 seconds as hard rocking as they are should probably be titled variations on a theme metallica's one solo then it goes into the most generic sounding riff i've ever heard in my life with generic vocals to back it up, i would probably like it if it was slightly more original but it's jsut a complete rip off

Dayvan Cowboy - Boards of Canada
I wasn't sure what direction this was going to go- I thought the scratching was leading to some power chord about to crash down, but it's staying electronic and sweet. This scratchy tone is getting annoying, though... it sounds like there are 50 layers beneath it but they're all muddled. Suddenly, it's done. The beat sets itself up nicely. I like the mix of live sounds with electronic- the claps and strings balance the electronic wankery nicely. This is an AMAZING use of electronics in recording.

9/10. I'm trying to find anything else by them now.

Angra... wow. Surprising. Also very good.
Sort of weird powerpop instrumental ballad intro followed by very good ballad heavy metal in the vein of ummmmmm maybe Iced Earth? I'm not too familiar with this style so I don't know. Good though. Long build up makes it worthwhile.

Clann Zu- From Bethlehem to Jenin

The intro part was pretty not good at all.  When they finally cut out the piano, it turned into a pretty good song.  I espically liked the drums for some reason. At the end, the spoken voice made the overly high pitched male voice seem worse.

Graham Parker - Discovering Japan

The intro riffs set off a huge alarm in my head. The alarm is in rainbow amiga colours and it's marked '80's'. I have the brief, disconcerting feeling that I should be in a Foreigner video. Having made this promise, this song delivers on it. It's a cheesy slice of 80's rock. Good stuff, to be honest, if a bit soft. Makes me want to wear my sunglasses at night. I'll give this a solid but unremarkable 7/10.

Now, lets get on to some seriously good stuff. I'm afraid you're going to have to watch this song with the video, otherwise you might not 'get' it. Easily one of the cleverest covers of all time. So simple, and so powerful. And yes, that is Marc Almond.

This is good. Great atmosphere, only thing that I found wrong with it was the sound at the 2 minute mark. Everything else, the bell melody, gloomy vocals and occasional "duh-duh" contributed nicely to the most entertaining version of this song I have heard. 8.5/10

Kuraka - Alfernes Natt

I like it, you definately captured that Polka feeling. The rawness of the unmastered version really adds to it I think. I don't know it sounds pretty good to my ears, maybe and this is just a suggestion, but you could stick a guitar into the background and play some tremello riffs ala finntroll to give it a bit more "bite" I guess, I don't know if the "polka metal" sound is /what you're after though. 7/10

The music is amazingly cool, a black metal take on jazz, and it works. Great atmosphere, the sax soloing is very laid back and depressed. The vocals sound very bleak and whatnot, but when you hear the lyrics they are way too silly, even hilarius. "Try to stick your pencils, up your nose
And smashing it into a table"  That would be my only fault with it, a more serius approach would have suited it better. Still a 9/10 for amazing music.

Post by: KharBevNor on 20 Dec 2006, 23:05
Carpathian Forest aren't a very serious band a lot of the time, but they are grimmer than your mum with a strap-on, and they do normally manage to cut something fucking dark under their non-serious/humorous angle of attack. If you thought that track was a bit silly, you might try 'Cold Comfort', which is a track by them in a similiar vein (Jazz, piano, black metal atmospherics) but played completely straight. It's a brilliant track. Also, try and track down one of their more obscure releases 'In These Trees Are My Gallows': 'Last Sigh of Nostalgia Rehearsal' doesn't have quite the same instrumentation, but you could cut the atmosphere with a broadsword, if you know what I mean.

Ok So this is some pretty good stuff. This is an example to your kids about a rock n roll flute solo.It starts out with just guitar and is added with a drums then piano and finally the flute with a chorus to back it up.  The intro Guitar is great and it is as if some one is creeping along in the shadows. The guitar riffs just get better and better. The vocals sound like the jester in the Hunch Back of No Tra Dam (or how ever you spell it).  I only take points of for the chorus.

Crap, I really did upload a track earlier, could have sworn I posted it. Sorry for delaying. Anyways, @ Khar, I don't really mind the sillyness of the lyrics per se, and the vocal delivery is really good, it just makes the song something entirely else than it would have been with actually depressing lyrics. Would have been awesome for sulking, now it is awesome for smiling at instead.

Meant to put this in the above post, but Mr. Flaming, what is up with the direct quote? A typo in a message that was supposed to be edited out in about sixty seconds is not something you should have to be a dick about.

@ Khar: True that, but lines like "Try to stick your pencils up your nose and smashing it into a table" outweigh them. Will be the band out though, definately something that interested me.

For the song up for reviewing; I accidentally downloaded it because I knew the song simply as Bobby Brown and thought this was another song featuring the same character. Alas, I already knew the song, but will still review it, because, well, it is going to be a while until someone who doesn't already know this one comes along this thread. The song itself is kinda bland, despite Zappa's efforts to use varied instrumentation. It doesn't really have any drive in a lot of parts. But, the music itself isn't the main focus. It's all lyrics here. The story of a sexual deviant called Bobby Brown. I can see why someone might like this, but the humor doesn't hit home with me, and the vocal delivery is actually kind of annoying. 4/10 as I don't enjoy it, but I suppose it isn't without merit.

As far as Carpathian Forest go once Nordavind left the lyrics got a lot sillier. I find amongst Nattefrost's lyrics there's the occansional genious moment burried beneath the silliness.

I own one of their early EP's "Through Chasm, Caves and Titan Woods" and I can confirm everything Khar said re the atmosphere. They do an absolutely chilling version of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven"

Ooh, I've not heard that, fancy an mp3 swap? Must be one of the few things by them I don't own.

Carpathian Forest are just a brilliantly eclectic band who aren't too po-faced to not go absolutely fucking nuts, but still retain some serious black metal pretensions. I mean, they're the only even somewhat traditional BM band I can even imagine covering The Cure seriously. That said, there are some fucking wierd black metal covers floating around that seem to have been undertaken with complete sincerity. Tulus' version of Bowies 'Space Oddity' comes to mind.

This was for the most part a pretty dire listening expiriance. I do enjoy a few bands influenced by these guys, for example Innvortis, by which I uploaded a song earlier in this thread, but it seems that they already took everything good about this and made it better. The vocals are feeble, the singer sounds like he is really uncertain about what he is saying. And around the one minute mark we get a single scream, followed immediately by some pussy "oh yeah"s which totally kills off the power of the scream. This repeats itself later on in the song. The music playing under this is run of the mill mid-tempo punk for the most part, with a single interesting moment though, the part after the chorus is really wierd and pretty cool. Then we get some not so special soloing. 5/10 for being almost completely mediocre.

funk cover - apach - incredible bong band 8/10
great bongo work. I like the part when it was exclusively bongos. The organ wasn't annoying at all and all the music notes were well written. Everything was solid and quite enjoyable. I give it an 8 because I dont listen to any music like that. It's missing innovative extra sounds/morphing and it was sorta dancey (its also been past 20 minutes since I listened to the song)? Again, there was great note combinations and the bongos kicked ass.

I'm liking this so far.  Nice and slow with the semi-clean guitar.  However, the song doesn't really change that much.  There's a semi-interesting lead part, but it gets kinda monotonous.  Ok, toward the end it gets pretty interesting.  A damn cool drum breakdown part with a nice guitar lick.  7/10

KharBevNor, I still would like to know what review you would have given that song. Grifters has quite a catalog. This is indeed one of their slower more memorizing songs. The vocals are trippy.

I was drunk when I wrote this so apologies for the lack of legibility.

grifters -  make it happen

starts slurred boring singing over some ok guitar, meh, guitar slows down and sounds quite cool actually, singer sounds like he's trying to copy john lennon but not fucking being very good, layers of music now seem out of synch with each other, another cool bit, drumming is quite nice. Everything still just sounds off. Random fuzz. meh. If you are gonna solo solo right. Slows right down again. just drums, I do not dig this vocalist. Where is this shit even going? is this a song? what the hell. Okay this bit is all right, there is some good feeling here, this band is basically seemingly just a band with good ideas who cannot write songs at all and that is okay, though still kinda shitty. I don't like the singer and nothing else meshes. Guitar i sokay. I skipped a bit. Nice again but its totally going nowhere. 5.5 no lets be generous 6/10.

Boy Kill Boy - On and On 6/10
This is exactly the kind of music I dislike. It sounds like indie music. But still unoriginal. The pounding riffs with no funk. The voice that sounds like million others. Im on their myspace right now listening to another track "shoot me down" which is much better. sorry dude, the wrong person reviewed this tune.

I would love to write a ten page paper on why I hate voices like Panic at the Disco or.... I dont even know the names of the bands, I don't keep track. Theres so many. Their voice is theatrical or 'slick'. Putting on a show. I dont know, its just so hatable. The emo or toughness in their voice that isn't accompinied by tough music (more complex or rustic sounds as one example). I dont know I dont know. I need to actually listen to one of those singers again. And meditate on why their music sucks. I dont have the time right now

My last try with the Grifters:
Grifters - Holmes
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ccjc4e

what I get from their music: it isn't clean but thats a good thing. Perfection in imperfection. Grit Funk. Keppin it real. As cool as they come. More creative than your normal garage band. No simplicity and no childish-emotional singing. (I like more adult emo)

I WOULDN'T TRUST ANYONE WHO ISN'T JUST A LITTLE BIT CRAZY

I'm gonna try Clann Zu again.

Clann Zu- One Bedroom Apartment= http://www.sendspace.com/file/r5ls2k

Words For Snow is the shorter song.  One Bedroom Apartment is a long ballad.  Review either one.

See, i dont try to go for that. I just pick a song and see what other people think about it.  Its just silly to try an get a perfect 10/10 when opinions differ from one person to the next.  Silly Reviewers, 10s are for Khar's music! (kidding of course)

Clann Zu- Words For Snow

ok typing as a listen to this the second time through.

a nice slow opening, suggests that something bigger will come, a simple riff added and then it begins to go downhill. the vocalist just doesn't do anything for me, he sounds like he's not even bothering to begin to try. And then you have that whiney violin over the top taking the focus off of everything else. Usually II love the sound of violins but not in this track. The drums begin and the melody is brought faster in an attempt to bring strong emotion, a quick pause in the music in another attempt to bring out emotion but it really just doesn't deliver. Then suddenly the vocalist is pissed off at everyone and wants to get the fuck out of wherever it is he is. I don't blame him.

4/10, there's some tasty music in there, but it just isn't put together in any way that conveys a message, story or really anything.

I'm not sure what it is about this song that I like. In fact I'm not sure why I like it at all. But there's something about the simple, sing-along rhymes and merry jingles in the background that really kinda works. The singing really suits the music and the song as a whole is simple but effective. And really catchy. 8/10

I like this, simple and nice. It's not about to win any awards for being the most superfantastic song in the world, but it's a really peaceful and relaxing track that would make great background music whilst doing almost anything.

Eh?

Anyway, Mourningtide.
Pretty sweet intro. I like it. Seems to take all the good bits of Pantera and combine them with a house party.
It's like... redneck party metal. I dig. More than a few nods to hairmetal of old. The vocals are pretty average but the rest of it is fun. The breakdown is pretty silly.

So, Nick Cave. I have this thing where I didn't like him for aaaaages. That has sort of passed now, but I still don't listen to him very much.

This is pretty rockin'. A lot less moody than the Nick Cave I'm used to, but still obviously Nick Cave. Lyrics are kinda interesting, alternately picturesque / cryptic sort of stuff I've come to expect from him, with the usual moping over a girl, but in a not-very mopey way.

Hmm. The "Hey! Ho!" backing vocals are getting a bit annoying now.

I give it 6/10, factoring in my Nick Cave ex-dislike/current-indifference. I know he's a musical genius and everything, but I just don't care for him, really.

Anyway, this thread needs more hip-hop. So here's some vintage Kool Keith: the title track from his 1996 Sex Style LP. This may be, uh, unsettling if you haven't heard any of his stuff before. And even so, this album is a little more upfront with its imagery than most of his others efforts.

Fugazi - By You

The intro was great, but everything kind of goes to pot when it gets loud. All sorts of sloppy-sounding disharmonies, awful drum sound and a vocalist way too down in the mix. Reasonably cool riff around the 2:20 mark. Another decent, but awfully cliched bit, coming up to the 3:00. Drops to quiteness again quite jarringly. Then up again. Ooh, a solo? Well, kinda. Sounds like a cat attacking the high end of a fretboard. Especially when everything else drops out. Man, skipped the last thirty seconds of that. 6/10

Now, I'm not really sure what I want to post for my song. I think, after some consideration, I'll post a track by the most obscure band that I genuinely love, the masterful Ewigkeit.

Ewigkeit - The Thought Police (http://download.yousendit.com/826956EF1A93BD51)

I chose this track because on this CD the intros to the songs (and bits of connecting sound and whatnot) are on the ends of the previous tracks, and the intro to 'The Thought Police' is just a siren going 'woop' once. That means, by the way, that the strange bit at the end is actually the intro to 'How to Conquer The World (Live at the Bohemian Grove)' The song actually ends about 4:03.

I've come to expect you not to like Fugazi, but how could you call a part of that song cliched?  I'm genuinely curious, not out to start another shitslinging match.

I meant that one riff. It is cliche because it could have come straight from any mid seventies Black Sabbath album. Wierd that such a stoner-ish thing would pop up in the middle of a functionally straight-edge band really.

Clearly, you don't understand my situation.  My neighbor got caught when his parents got a home drug test.  However, he's started smoking again.  The other day he came over to my house and told me his parents were threatening him with another drug test.  I managed to get him to pay me six bucks for a cup full of my piss.  I've got quite a racket going now.  Gotta stay clean.

Plus, being high was boring the last few times I did it.

Ewigkeit - The Thought Police (http://download.yousendit.com/826956EF1A93BD51)

hey! this is pretty cool. i don't really know what's going on in metal very much (aside from a slight drone fetish: sunn O))), earth, etc. and i have a thing for silly slayer remixes), but this seemed to rock out pretty well. the genre being "Dance Metal" seemed pretty apt.

rockin, if tacky synth after the break in the middle. just wish there was more of it. catchy, fairly accessible: i could imagine playing it at a party. i reckon maybe 7.5 out of 10, since it's not quite an 8, but 7 is kind of an average mark for me.

so, on we go:

Boredoms -- Super Going (http://www.sendspace.com/file/rdds0h).

This is the longest song off Super ae, but it's also my favourite.

I don't think you could really take anything about what's happening in metal from Ewigkeit. It's basically just one guy rocking out in a basement studio with minimal outside influences (According to legend, he gave his entire music collection away to Oxfam a few years back in order to better do something original). Conspiritus is the latest evolution of his music (Ewigkeit began as Black Metal) and it's far more 'normal' than his previous album, Radio Ixtlan (which I consider to be one of the greatest albums of all time). His albums are all pretty 'far out' though. I mean, this one's a concept album about the New World Order. It's actually sold on David Icke's website.

Sonic Youth - Theresa's Sound World

This is one bipolar track right here. Starts off very dark and foreboding - you can tell the track is eventually going to explode (as it does for the first time around the 1:45 mark) and the buildup is masterfully executed. Goes from melancholy and hungover-sounding to a whirl of guitar and back without missing a beat. The noodly ascending solo sounds very Pearl Jam for some reason, and that's not a comparison that does any band a disservice.

What CD is this from? I heard a couple back in the day but never investigated them properly, and I'm intrigued. 9.5/10

Hmmm. . . this isn't much more interesting than listening to someone mow their lawn.  It seems like pretty generic indie fodder.  The chord changes are fairly pleasant, though.  It's nice listening, but not very engaging.  Oh, here's a nice little break a little past the three minute mark, and it'll fade out like this I see.

Dave Brubeck - Take Five

A great track from a great album.  The drum solo is really great, and the melody is just awesome.  Probably when of the best songs I know in 5/4.  Although, on Time Out I personally prefer Blue Rondo a la Turk.  9/10.
