(before you go any further, yes I know there was a thread started for 2005, but instead of reviving a dead one I figured start a new one)
So, how many literary masochists do we have lurking out there amongst the QC fans? "Literary masochists?!", you may ask with surprise. "What the hell is that?"
That my friends is a person who likes to submit themselves to the agonizing and mostly humorous torture of attempting to produce a novel (or at least the start of one) that is 50,000 words long in the span of 30 days in November.
Welcome to NaNoWriMo!! National Novel Writing Month. Like I said. Starting at 12:00:01 you begin writing word one of a novel. a fresh idea, one that you haven't started (though hopefully if you're mildly sane, have thought about) beforehand. Attempting to reach the final goal of 50,000 words or more. We are approaching the deadline to sign up (www.nanowrimo.org) and it would be great if we actually had a community of writers that could band together and bitch communally about what the hell we were thinking signing up for this damnable thing in the first place.
What do you win? Bragging rights, self satisfaction, a good night sleep (maybe but not guaranteed). That's it. It's crazy, it's a lot of writing, it's a focus for all those hours we waste idly sitting in front of the computer vedging out skimming the same 5 pages over and over again. You all should sign up 'n stuff!

I'm doing this! I was going to leave the forums so I can concentrate on it and life, but obviously that isn't happening.
Moving this to correct forum!
-
thanks for moving it (i wasnt sure quite where to dump it activity vs book vs whatever) glad to see that there are other lunatics out there like me!
-
I somehow got talked into this again. I have no time at all this year, so we'll see how it goes. I love nano though.

How do I wrote book?
-
I might do it, if I can squeeze it in between essays. I'll probably bash something out in a huge overnight session - that is fun, pulling crazy all-nighters to meet targets.
Although I only made 20k last year.

Tonight is the night, ladies and Gents.
at 12:01 if you're in, kiss your social life (and sleep i would bet too) goodbye!
We should keep the status updates here, word count, story ideas, problems, excuses to slack etc here.
-
I do not plan to sacrifice sleep, although I will surely be sacrificing some of my social life and goofing off time. But... not much. I spend an hour or more doing nothing on the internet every day, putting that time towards writing will give me more than enough for the 50k. I am interested to see how many words I write an hour.

This is it folks!
As of right now (at least in chicago anyways) we are 9 hours and counting!
I'm getting coordinated and jazzed to be doing this.
and to Ally, you are totally right! when i first moved into my dorm a month ago i was waking up and cranking out 2000 words before getting breakfast in the mornings, so this should really not be too big of a problem.
Good luck to you all!

And we're off!
I dunno how many people are actually doing this, or where you are at right now, but chime in, cause i know we are all going to need that moral support come 10,000 or maybe even 2,000 words from now!
Here's a hit on my story:
It's the story of two very different people who come to chicago. one is a photojournalist student at Columbia College, the other is a man with a broken memory and super powers he is still discovering. It is told from the photojournalists perspective and follows their friendship through being hunted by the cops, the government, other governments and eventually another superhero. It is heavily rooted in eschatology, primarily Islamic and Hindu, with hints of book of Revelations and some references to Mayan.
well back to work

I think I know what I'm going to write about. Dunno if I will though, since I have to get on with college.
-
I'm actually opting out, after all. Yay lame. Just like... school. My teachers are laying it on thick because this is the last week of the term.
-
to all the NaNo'ers out there, how's it going?
Par for today is 28,339
I'm currently at 14,849, but i've got a 5 hour train ride this afternoon, so I plan on doing all my catching up (or at least 7,000 words then).
