i can play some guitar, piano, trumpet and violin
i also just worked out how to play everlong...i love that song so i'll just keep playing it for the next hour...then i should probably go and learn how to play something else in drop D...anyrecomendations...other than slint and anal cunt that is

Yep.
Don't play in drop D.
-
I play accordion in Beautiful Wang & the Allys (http://www.quiki.net/index.php/Beautiful_Wang_%26_the_Allys), although I don't know how to play.
I actually do know how to play a little guitar.
-
I have played the trombone for 15 years now...if I ever were to properly motivate myself, I imagine that other brass instrument would cause me little grief, but I am lazy. I wasn't all that shabby at percussion, provided I only have to hit one thing at a time. Piano owned my ass, and I still can't play the damned thing. All the cool "rock" instruments I fail at...
But I can play a damned mean trombone, if I do say so meself.
-
I play the guitar decently, and though i used to be really good at trumpet i let it slip for 2 years, but am now taking it up again.
-
LOL A TINY GUITAR

I think for the most part, a good 10% of the entire forums plays in BW&tA.
-
Oh, fuckdamn, I forgot I was a part of this!
I think I should do dramatic readings for BW&A...MIRITE?
-
I actually do play accordion. Though how well is up for argument.
I also dabble in bass guitar.
(now u!)
-
I used to play trumpet and piano, I can still do alright on the trumpet if I pick it up, but as for the piano, all I can remember are a smattering of right hand parts for fairly simplistic classical pieces.
At the moment I am playing bass, although not very well. Mostly I am just hoping to start a band with some easy, laid back people and maybe jam over some Beatles songs.
-
I play drums and Guitar (Hero).
-
Guitar and piano, primarily, though I dabble in pretty much any instrument I come across. I own electric and acoustic guitars, piano, mandolin, banjo, recorder and Casiotone keyboard. My brother plays drums, and I play those too sometimes. Oh, and my mom owns an accordion.
-
I played clarinet for seven years, but I haven't for three. I wonder how easy it'd be to just pick it back up? I started teaching myself bass guitar, but like most things I was super into it for a month and then I stopped. I also used to play piano(four years), but I never really got anywhere with it.
-
wasn't there already a thread like this?...
guitar/bass, saxophone, 120 bass accordion, trumpet, piano (and pretty much any form of piano i.e. glockenspiel, etc.), flute
-
Piano, some guitar, and Bass Clarinet well regular Clarinet as far as that goes, I just prefer the bass.
-
I finished 6th grade AMEB in piano but have played only very occasionally in the last few years. I mean to start playing again in the upcoming summer holildays.
Also, an attempt was made to show me how to play guitar once, but it's probably best if we didn't go there.

i learned violin and trumpet first (i was in the school orchestra and had to run over to the other side of the stage in some performances depending on what they needed more of)
then from that i self taught myself the piano upto about grade 1 and a half standard...then it gets too complicated doing two hands and stuff and i just moved onto guitar and have been doing that for about 3/4 of a year focusing more on tabs than reading actual music
-
i played piano and a tiny bit of trumpet, but they were both so long ago i doubt i'd be able to do anything with either these days.
have been tinkering with circuit bending and tracking on old vidogame consoles, but i don't really think that counts. plus i'm no good.
-
I play bass.
-
Don't play in drop D.
play in C!
i can play the violin (although i unfortunately don't have one right now). i also play guitar and bass.
-
I played drums for 12 years now (I think). But sadly, I have to stop taking drumming lessons now, because university eats up all my spare time.
I also dabble around a bit with a bass, but I'm not very good. I tried the guitar as well, but as it turns out, my fingers are stupid.
-
I play drums. That is what I play best. I also dabble in piano, and am okay at harmonica. Oh, and I can play some xylophone, too.

"Anchorless" by The Weakerthans and "Kiss the Bottle" by Jawbreaker are both in drop D. Learn those.
-
Ukulele.
-
I play:
Guitar (11 years)
Piano/keyboard/organ (2/3 years; none of them well)
Bass (4/5 years)
Drums (not well, but luckily I have rhythm, so I have a knack for it)
Tin whistle (not well)
Percussion (i.e. bongos, shakers, etc.)
Mandolin
As for not playing in Drop D, that's bullshit. Different tunings can be really useful, entertaining and beautiful. Most people who say 'don't play Drop D' just associate with metal, but tons of people use it. I love alternate tunings. My alternate tuning of choice is DADGBD. Drop D is a good one, however, because you can play a fifth chord with your finger and your other three are free to do whatever you want.
-
i play bass. i've been doing lots of jazz at uni for the past 4 years and i've also played in punk/hardcore bands and black metal bands too.
-
<---------- World's greatest cowbell player
-
My primary instrument is trumpet, and I am also proficient in all of the other brass instruments, including trombone. I've learned a bit of piano, not very good at it, and I've made an attempt at learning guitar, but I ran out of motivation when the ladies didn't flock at me within ten minutes of picking the thing up.
I'm also a very good vocalist, if I may toot my own horn. My voice part is baritone, but I can easily sing stuff written for tenors, since I've spent so much time singing along with Steven Page, which has expanded the bejesus out of my range.
In other news, I saw BNL last night at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philly. Serious glee. Steve has the best voice in music, in my opinion.
-
I am a horrid guitarist and a horrid singer.
-
Most woodwinds (saving for the clarinet family, bassoon, and english horn), trumpet, and Mallet and Stick percussion. In my high school band I was one of the ones lovingly referred to as an instrument whore.

High fives to AlexAttack.

"Anchorless" by The Weakerthans and "Kiss the Bottle" by Jawbreaker are both in drop D. Learn those.
"Anchorless" is by Propagandhi and is off their album "Less Talk, More Rock." Oh wait, the Weakerthans do have a song called "Anchorless." It's quite a bit longer than the Propagandhi one. Funny, I wonder if it's the same song extended and tweaked to the Weakerthans' style, because John K. Samson was still in Propagandhi when "Less Talk, More Rock" came out. I'll have to do some research.
EDIT: I just found out. The song has the same theme for both bands. The opening lyrics are the same, but they differ in the bodies a bit.
-
from best to worst:
acoustic guitar
ukulele
glockenspiel
harmonica
mandolin
electric guitar
piano
bass guitar
violin
recorder
Things I want to learn and acquire:
banjo
drums
12 string acoustic guitar
trumpet
-
Alls I can do is sing with mediocre results.
I can play a very tiny little bit of guitar and bass guitar. I'm hoping to take up piano.
-
Oh, and I can sing. I don't know how good I am melodically, but I can figure out harmonies by ear (in fact that's the only way I can do it really) and my voice is powerful enough to fill some pretty large rooms.
-
My alternate tuning of choice is DADGBD.
Any time I get away from standard tuning, it's either DADGBD or standard, half step down (mainly if I'm playing Moz or old Weezer).
-
Add accordian to the list of things I want to learn. That would be awesome.
-

Yeah, I'm more familiar with The Weakerthans version.

I hardly ever play half-step down. I just think that a semitone isn't worth all that retuning, so even though I know most Weezer songs like the back of my hand by figuring them out without the recording, I hardly ever play along to their songs.
-
The CD Player.
Sorry had to get the smartass out of my system
I can play the violin and can sing really well. I don't know for sure but I think I have about a 2 or 3 octave voice. I can sing everything from Metallica to The Platters and the high harmonies in Beach Boys songs.
-

high fives to misereatur for recognising the 3 best genres of music, and also just for high fiving? :-D
-
I played violin for like 8 years. Never even got past the second grade. Also did saxophone for a year but I wasn't really that into it. I sing though, pretty well too but I am systematically destroying my vocal chords by singing in a black metal band. Woo for self destructive behavours! \m/
-
Better than what I'm doing. I'm systematically destroying my vocal chords by smoking.
-

Yeah, I just like finding connections between bands like that. It's not quite as amazing as when I discovered Eddie Vedder singing on Bad Religion's Recipe For Hate, but it's nice.
-
Well i've been playing French Horn for...7 years now i think. i don't keep track. But i'm fairly good at that; i was section leader at my old school and i would have been this year but i moved schools so i couldn't try out.
i play bass, mostly jazz but i did have a hardcore/alt punk/experimental (we really weren't sure what we wanted to play) band going for about 3 months before i moved.
i'm a fairly good singer, i usually sing baritone, but occaisonally my voice will permit me to sing tenor.
-
I play:
Euphonium
Trombone
Trumpet (Though I have trouble getting above an E)
I understand (meaning I could kind of fumble around with):
Guitar
Keyboards
Bass
Accordion
I wish I could play all of the above better, but I would like to learn harmonica and mandolin.
-
I play piano and can also rather badly play the guitar.
-
Don't play in drop D.
play in C!
The Terry Riley piece? I don't think that's going to impress the ladies.
I mainly play guitar, but can also stumble through on piano, drums, and voice.
-
Yep.
Don't play in drop D.
Don't be a prick.
-
I just feel extremely lazy when I play in drop D. Maybe I need to start experimenting more.
-
Learn "Blackwater Park" or "Ghost of Perdition" (which is supposedly in DADGAD, but sounds to me like standard drop-D) by Opeth if you're looking for drop-D songs that won't make you feel "lazy."
Or hell, anything by Hum. That bridge riff in "Stars" is super-fun to play.
-
whats wrong with drop d? when you play an instrument if you can find a way of doing something that makes things easier, without fucking up your technique, then do it. its not lazy its helpful. also it sounds cool in certain styles of music.
-
I don't think drop-D is really any "easier." The only things it really makes any simpler than standard tuning are low 5th chords, sus-chords, and drone melodies in D. And if you can't finger a standard barre chord easily in STANDARD, I posit that you have plenty of practicing to do REGARDLESS of what tuning you prefer.
What it DOES give you is a slightly wider tonal reach and access to some neat new chords. My favorite drop-d fingering of all time is:
----4----
----5----
----6----
----7----
----4----
----4----
It's basically impossible to finger that chord in standard, and it sounds REALLY cool. Slide that fingering up and down the fretboard and you'll find lots of neat progressions in a hurry. I use it in practically every song I've ever written.
-
a major seventh kind of, I'll have to try it :-)
A#maj7 with F# in the bass, interesting...
-
Actually it is just a regular Amaj7 with said F# in the bass.
I came up with a neat chord progression for acoustic guitar. Capo 5:
--2--0--0--
--2--3--3--
--2--0--0--
--0--2--0--
--x--2--2--
--x--0--3--
Simple but effective. Play it kinda tropically and see how it sounds! FUN.

Umm if it's impossible to do that fingering in standard doesn't that mean that Drop-D makes it easier?

Actually, I think the chord could be more properly called an F#min9, and the maj7 chord embedded in it is not A# but regular old A.

I'm the only person I know who uses a capo to make my guitar sound pretty rather than to knock a song up for my voice. I mean, I do both, but most of my songs start out with me whipping out the capo because it makes the guitar sound more chiming and bright.
-
Umm if it's impossible to do that fingering in standard doesn't that mean that Drop-D makes it easier?
For that example, yes, but in general, no. He's just saying that it gives you different possibilities. For example, in standard tuning, you can play this maj7 chord shape:
-x-
-x-
-3-
-4-
-6-
-7-
But in drop D, it would look like this:
-x-
-x-
-3-
-4-
-6-
-9-
Ouch, someone call Allan Holdsworth!
-
Alternate tunings make some things easier and some things harder. That chord is much easier to do in Drop D, but good luck getting a comfortable fingering for a bog-standard open G.
They're not 'easier' tunings. Just different. Saying drop D is a shit tuning is like saying anything except E-standard is a shit tuning, including other standards like C-standard or D-standard.
-
The Weakerthans also frequently use capos to make simple, easy-to-do-uncapo'd chord progressions sound nicer. DK, did you give my progression a shot?
-

Will do.
-
unfortunately, i am pretty much shite at all music, although i do have a dream to one day learn to play the bass like flea, who is god.
-

Pretty much every bassist I have spoken to shares your same aspiration... :-P Good luck!
I am a drummer. :-)
-

I did, sans-capo. I can see the "tropical" connection; it could make a nice piece of a bossa nova or something. I love bossa nova.
-
um, bass, guitar, used to play drums and keyboards, kinda half learning the ukelele at the mo too, when I can be bothered

"To Bid you Farewell" is a pretty cool Opeth song to play, one of their only songs I manage not to screw up, like I said, I'm pretty bad a guitar. It's in standard tuning though.
-

And those bass players stop playing after six months or so. Flea is a good bass player, but largely overrated.
Personally, I try to be Charlie Haden and Jaco Pastorius at the same time. Insane and impossible, I know, but it gives me somthing to work hard for.
-
my bass heros would be jaco, pattituci, stanley clarke, gary peacock and bootsy. bass players that wanna be like flea are really selling themselves short. he's really nothing special. sorry but misereatur was being too diplomatic.
-
DynamiteKid's alternate tuning of the week - Open D minor, capoed at the third fret to make Open F minor.
-
Used to drum quite a bit, but, alas, I am out of practice now.
-
I play the guitar, more comfartable with an acoustic. I took also took up bass this summer, have gotten to a pretty ok point, but have yet to master a bunch of techniques. I can also drum a little bit, and learnt to play flutes a few weeks ago.
-

No Les Claypool? :(
-
I've been fiddling with bass for a couple years now, it's coming along slowly.
I don't need to turn into Jaco or Vic Wooten (as cool as that would be) ... all I want to be able to do is play like Scott Reeder.
-
No Les Claypool? :(
Whoa. That is way too much to ask from me. I'm taking it one step at a time.
-
Mandolin, Guitar, and drums. I like to dabble in a little of everything!
-
No Les Claypool? :(
i used to really like primus a lot but i learnt most of his stuff and now i'm kind of over it y'know? not putting shit on him, he's very creative but i'm just not all WOW when i hear it because i can do it. i like to have goals y'know? that and i'm getting more into like hard funk stuff. i'm working on making one or two notes sexy and evil at the same time ya dig? its all about timing for me right now, not slapping and popping and tapping at a million miles an hour anymore. though its still fun to bust it out every now and again
-
I can play guitar and percussion (snare drum, mallet instruments, piano). My thing is, I can play by ear and improvise, but I'm horrible at reading music and remembering note names/locations. Basically, the first 80% of this page might as well have been in arabic. I can remember some chords, but not many. :P
-
"You already submitted this post, please try again!"? FUCK YOU FORUM.
Anyways. I took pictures of everything in my house that I play except the upright piano! Blurry, shitty pictures I may fix later!

love the rockstar guitar
-
Am I the only flautist? For a little over five years now, but I'm not amazing at it yet. Wishes I had more time to practice....
-
Sir, your electric guitar appears to have but two strings.? Is this deliberate?
Unless you refer to the Rockstar pad, his electric in fact has four strings on it.

<---------- World's greatest cowbell player
Damn it, I was going to make a cowbell joke!
...except, I can't really play cowbell.
-
I play the harmonica. I'm not terribly good at it, but there is a story as to why I took it up. Many years back my grandfather bought a run-down old building with the intention of fixing it up into a dance club. I was invited to help out by pulling up old carpeting, along with other minor functions. Why ask me to help? I was cheap labor. Only cost him twenty bucks and a hug. While wandering around backstage I came across a busted up old harmonica on the floor, and without thinking much about it I picked it up. I showed it to my grandfather and he was totally cool with me keeping it, so, I did. After thoroughly washing the blasted thing, I eagerly put it to my lips... and out flowed the craziest amateur polka you've ever heard. I thought it was hilarious for some reason, so I continued to play. I never learned how to read music, or to manage any actual songs... but I had a lot of fun.
The club was dubbed "Headliners" and became a huge success. My grandfather eventually sold it though, I think.
I can also sing with a certain measure of talent. There isn't a weird origin story behind it though. I was simply cursed with a boyband voice, and I sang in the shower for so many years that I inevitably became quite good at it.
