there's nothing worse than hearing a song come on, recognizing the lyrics or the basic sound, and then realizing it's actually a butchered attempt to remake a song you love by some painfully inferior group. i'm sure this has happened to most of us. what, then, are the worst covers you've ever heard? advise us what to avoid for fear of corrupting forever out aural memories, or what to seek out for a hilariously bad remake.
as for me, the cover of sigur ros' 'hopp?polla' by we are scientists is one of the worst i've ever heard.
-
The fact that Marilyn Manson covered "Personal Jesus" makes me quite angry...however, my award for worst cover ever AND biggest crime against humanity is that fucking Limp Bizkit cover of "Behind Blue Eyes"
THEY USE A FUCKING SPEAK AND SPELL IN IT, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!!!
That cover fills me with more rage than is healthy, even for an angry, cynical bastard like me.
-
the national socialist black metal band Absurd did a cover of The Village People's YMCA. I'm not sure whether it's the best cover or the worst cover.

hahah that sounds brilliant actually. black metal ymca. damn, i have to find that.

WAS covered Sigur Ros? Why don't we just get a train wreck to cover Hiroshima?
-
WAS covered Sigur Ros? Why don't we just get a train wreck to cover Hiroshima?
sadly, it was. here's a link http://www.hivenet.is/befb/we_are_scientists_hoppipolla.mp3
give it a listen and weep. i know i did.
-
given to marilyn manson for not only ruining "personal jesus", but also "tainted love" by soft cell. fuck you, you post-industrial, g.g. allin wannabe.
-
Not that the Eurythmics were anything unbelievable, but so as to hate on Manson even more, the Sweet Dreams cover I think warrants a beatdown as well.
-
Ironic punk covers. All of them.
-
HAHAHAHA it's so funny!! were a punk rock band, but were playing a backstreet boys song!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAfuckyou.
agreed.
-
Maril;yn mansons covers are generally pretty good rto be honest
Lessee, Cradle of Filths attempt at mrt crowley was rather pants, and all thos e techno remix dance cover thingys. Whoevers resoinsiblke for that version of alice coopers poison should very much be shot in the face till he doesn[t have a head
-
ugh, I feel so bad for Sigur Ros to be lumped in with that terrible performance. After the guy screws up the 3rd note I knew I was in for a mind numbing few minutes, but oh man, nothing could have prepared me for that. It's so... bad.
-
apparantly there's a dance remix of death crush floating around somewhere
i find that quite scary
other than that i'd say the used and my chemical romances cover of under pressure
-
Every rap song where all they do is rap over the music.
Worst Offenders:
Kashmir
Every Breath You Take. I'm not a fan of The Police, but I quite like that song.
Interestingly enough the other night I heard a rock cover of Baby Got Back and quite liked it.
-
Throwdown's cover of that song is pretty funny. I hate them a lot, but it's worth a chuckle.
-
First things first: Limp Bizkit covered "Behind Blue Eyes"? As in, by the Who? They DO deserve to get beaten for that.
I've never listened to the entire thing, but Talin Kweli does a song overtop of "Eleanor Rigby" and I always shut it off after it starts with the Beatles lyric "All the lo-nely people..." and you hear "yeah, I like to go out to clubs..." and I'm just like "OH GOOD GOD" and cut it.
I know we're talking bad covers, but I saw Dave Matthews Band live at Nissan Pavilion a few years ago, and they did "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash, it was pretty good.
-
I can't remember who it was, but recently some metal band covered Alice In Chains' Them Bones, death metal style. As a joke, so I can't really say it was a bad cover. Um....the Under Pressure debacle tops my list.
-

Indeed there is.
I know this because I made it.

AND SO MY EVIL SPREADS

Another Marilyn Manson, but his cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins "I Put A Spell on You". Seriously, you can't compete with one of the best vocalists EVER by nasally mumbling!

Boy Kill Boy's - Maneater
'Maneater' is a song that should only be listened to in a club, or if you're ready to go out and having a wee dance about. Boy Kill Boy's version of it is just dire
-

Posting this on a public message board should be a bannable offense, not to mention the feds that SHOULD be kicking down your door and plugging you as we speak. But they won't.
WAS deserves to be shot.
In the kneecaps.
Repeatedly.
Actually, drilling would be better. Yes, drills. Drills and kneecaps.
i know, i know. i'm sorry for subjecting you to that. truly i am. but it was so....atrocious for lack of a stronger and more accurate adjective that i couldn't simply contain my ire. truly this is a disgrace to music everywhere. i haven't heard all covers so perhaps this is not the worst ever, but it is close enough to be sure.
-
The fact that Marilyn Manson covered "Personal Jesus" makes me quite angry...however, my award for worst cover ever AND biggest crime against humanity is that fucking Limp Bizkit cover of "Behind Blue Eyes"
Alas, I heard Marilyn's version first. At first I though, 'shit he's made it sound exactly like the rest of his entire career.' Then I heard the original. Shit, he's been ripping off Depeche mode for TEN YEARS.
-
I think it was Destinys Child or some shit British girl group that covered RHCP's Under The Bridge. It's far from one of my favourite songs but I was so angry when I heard it mangled by them.
-
Who?

the national socialist black metal band Absurd did a cover of The Village People's YMCA. I'm not sure whether it's the best cover or the worst cover.
An NSBMYMCA then?

The one that has always pissed me off was Madonna's cover of American Pie by Don Mclean.
Come on, IT WAS HIS ONLY GOOD SONG, DON'T KILL IT!!
-
His only good song?
Surely you haven't heard "Vincent."
-
Hold a moment while I hang my head in shame.
No, I have not heard Vincent.
Well played, sir.
-
OK, now I have... and also the rest of "The Very Best Of Don McLean"
The fact that there are two albums, one being the "Best" and the other being the "Very Best" says something, I believe.
But I now return to my assertion that American Pie was his only good song. And it was terrible when Madonna covered it.
And I think the Dixie Chicks did, too.

Oh god that reminds me. I was listening to the local music program on the "alternative" (ha.) radio station (107.7 The End for NW homies.) and their was this rapper who took Float On and just rapped over the intro on repeat about how great seattle is. It was like a song they'd play in a Washington tourist ad. It was disgusting.
-
Fall Out Boy did a cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" I downloaded it and couldn't even listen to it all the way through.
*sigh* And my best friend just LOVES Fall Out Boy.
-
well, then you should shoot his/her head.
not really. but you know.
-
WAS covered Sigur Ros? Why don't we just get a train wreck to cover Hiroshima?
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.
-
worst cover i ever heard was staind covering "sober".
it made me never want to listen to music ever again.
-
Fall Out Boy did a cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" .
I heard that. It made me die a little inside. If they could only stick to simple, happy pop punk, then no-one need get upset.
Also, Panic! At The Disco raping Karma Police. It's not even that it's bad, per se. Just utterly pointless.

rehseboy: It's okay. You weren't to know "best" meant "shit."
-
Johnny, I think your post just made me wee myself a little.
-
Earlier a couple people mentioned a rap cover of Every Breath You Take. The only one of these I can think of is I'll Be Missing You by Puff Daddy, and I'm going to have to seriously disagree with this being a bad song on a sentimental basis. Last August a friend of my older brother's passed away, and on the drive home from the procession, that song came on the radio. It is the last time I can remember that the tears actually flowed.
-
The dance cover of Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart" makes me want to crush skulls.
-
Rod Stewart (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Rm-3OSylDwY) covers Tom Waits (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1OLA6AiZlVw)' Downtown Train.
-
Massive Attack had a pretty bad cover of "Light My Fire"
-
Johnny, I think your post just made me wee myself a little.
Oddly enough I'm almost sure that's the goal of that cover.
-

What about Amorphis's cover of that song? Not really dissing it, dont get me wrong, I normally
like them.... but that frightened me. XD
-
But I now return to my assertion that American Pie was his only good song. And it was terrible when Madonna covered it.
I whole-heartedly agree with that! Poor Don McLean, and his one and only good song completely butchered by that...wow, there are no appropriate insults for that woman anymore. They've all been used. When it was on the radio -all- the time, and people would sing it "because it's such a good thing!" I wanted to cry. I think I actually did a couple of times. It was horrible. I had spent the whole summer before listening to that song over and over, because it was uber-fantastic in my...oh, twelve year old head, and then Madonna had to do it, and I had to tell people, "Guys! It's not -her- song! It's a cover!" and no one believed me until they heard a DJ say it on the radio. I went to school with idiots.
Sorry, I ranted a bit. It's an awesome song that got covered by a hack.
-
Boys Of Summer covered by The Atari's annoys me...except for the fact that they namedropped Black Flag, which is pretty cool. It's actually not the worst cover I've ever heard, I just really dislike The Atari's, so by default I am forced to hate this cover.
-
I don't mind the ataris version of that song - it's ok, in an average kind of way, which makes it better than anything else the ataris have done...
In other news, today I have heard Take That doing Kaiser Chief's Every Day I Love You Less and Less, which made me feel a little ill. I don't even like the song that much, but Take That always used to hold a special place in my heart, and now, they have gone and shat on that special place by reforming and sounding like backing singers for James Blunt.

So someone, who has recorded a few dozen truly classic pop songs across their career, is dismissed as a hack for doing one shitty cover?
That's fucking idiotic.
-
I usually dismiss her for writing a whole host of insipid pop ditties.
Is that somehow better?
-
So hey, how about that time Korn played "One" on national tee-vee for all to hear?
-
One as in the Harry Nilsson song...?
-
I think he means the U2 song.
-
I really love Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, but his cover of Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind on Jesus) by Blind Roosevelt Graves and Brother, an old southern, almost gospelly song, if you haven't heard it, was really bad. Like the original version is all happy and uplifting but the cover is really depressing and very unearthy. I was really disappointed.
-
One as in the Harry Nilsson song...?
He means "One" by Metallica. It was also on one of their DVDs or Greatest Hits CDs I think.
Eh, it wasn't that good, but I didn't think it was horrible. Worst part is that
they shortened it. Took out the best part of the solo.

Leeds Festival this year.
Panic! at the disco covering "tonight" by the smashing pumkins as a "treat" for the audience. Reading did not get put through that ordeal.
-
Orgy's cover of Blue Monday. It's vomit inducing.
-
Blue Monday was vomit-inducing.
-
Blue Monday was vomit-inducing.
You shut your filthy mouth.
-
Blue Monday is awesome.
Kylie Minogue has performed Can't Get You Out Of My Head to Blue Monday. I hate her song but it is interesting/weird to hear.
Also seeing New Order perform perform Blue Monday is really strange. They introduced the song by saying that they only play it because they have to. I found it hard to enjoy knowing that the band really weren't enjoying themselves.

I can see why. Especially since half of them don't have to do anything during it, and it is eight minutes long.

That may be because someone knocked the singer unconscious, tapping the 'conscience' part of him into action when he came to, meaning that they only decided to rape Karma Police. Only.
It's kind of like deciding to only give someone AIDS instead of Syphillis too.
-
Blue Monday was vomit-inducing.
You shut your filthy mouth.
As long as you don't mind me typing that I think blue monday is awful.
-
Does that Linkin Park stunt involving Sweet Child Of Mine count, because if it does I would put that high up among my least favorites. Also, I'm going to second the Limp Bizkit cover of Behind Blue Eyes.
-
Also, I'm going to second the Limp Bizkit cover of Behind Blue Eyes.
No emotion, no talent, no music. And goddamnit I hate that digital sound on his voice.
-
Tommy once told me Limp Biskit had covered Fugazi's Waiting Room. I have never listened to this, but i am pretty sure this is the worst cover ever.
-
There's a "z" in Limp Bizkit, Emilio. Just so you know.
It's important because that makes it worse.
-
Ok, Korn-Another Brick in the Wall.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyw7NfDY5uI
A song that simply did not EVER need covering. Especially with that incredibly awful bass sound they seem to love.
Crazy Town-New Noise (originally by Refused)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urezv-d82hE
Another song that didn't not need covering, especially not by a crappy rap rock band.
-
I find it amusing the korn fans need the lyrics to Another fucking Brick In The Wall flashed up on a giant screen so they can sing along.
-
Jonathan Davis should make like Fortunato and get himself bricked behind a fucking wall solely for this cover.
-
What makes that even worse is the successful, long-lived careers of both bands.
-
Fall Out Boy did a cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" I downloaded it and couldn't even listen to it all the way through.
You say that like it's the only song they've ruined. Other songs Fall Out Boy has raped:
-The Police- "Roxanne"
-Gorilla Biscuits- "Start Today"
-Jawbreaker- "Save Your Generation"
-One of the songs from Nightmare Before Christmas, I forget which.
-

the link speaks for itself
-
That is at least 400 times better than the original. Maybe more.
-
I'm going to say at least 2,000.
-
Tommy, I wasn't aware that they had a shorthand number to represent "infinity."
-
The dance cover of Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart" makes me want to crush skulls.
agreed definately.
although i think worse.
is all the rap/dance other people who have ripped off small kraftwerk bits.
and also when chingy used portrait of tracy in one of his songs.

Jebediah
Hungry like the Wolf
William Shatner
Common People
Evenescence

a fantastic cover?
Ben Folds
Bitches aint Shit

OK, I'm really sick of people ejaculating over Ben Folds' ironic rap covers. Seriously, they aren't funny.

I disagree.

I can't really compare to the horrible cover songs mentioned here. But I got something close: Tim McGraw did Tiny Dancer. And it made me sad.
-
I have to say, I don't really like KoRn's cover of 'Brick.' Pink Floyd are my favourite (defunct) band, and The Wall is great. However, I appreciate what they've done to it. They have taken that song and made it their own. I give them props for willingly taking the original and turning it into a KoRn track. So fuck anyone who says it's shit. You're right, it is shit. But at least they've not done it EXACTLY like the original.
Ditto goes to Sugarcoma's cover of 'Crazy.'
-
well, on the bright side of things, there's a video somewhere of Panic! At The Disco where the lead singer gets knocked out by a water bottle.
-
you want to talk about bad covers perpetrated by korn, somewhere on her computer, my mother has korn covering 'love on the rocks' everytime it gets played, a guitar string snaps somewhere in the world.
