Well, as most of you probably know, the new Sparta album is called "Threes," which is an appropriate name since it's their third studio album. However, it's a bit more relevant than that. Jim and Tony from Sparta used to be At the Drive-In, who split up after releasing three studio albums. Also, the other members of At the Drive-In, Cedric and Omar (and now Paul, who switched from Sparta to TMV) are in The Mars Volta, who just recently released their third album. I'm hypothesizing that Jim named the album "Threes" because all three bands have release three albums. I'm smart and insightful. I don't know if he's viewing this as some sort of weird closure, though.

I was just thinking about it today. It seems logical. Maybe it'll start a Myspace war between Sparta and The Mars Volta or something.

Is it better or worse that in years nobody will remember Sparta, while everyone will remember The Mars Volta as music's utter nadir?

It happens a lot. I'm still sad that Ken Andrews from Failure and Jeff Garber from Castor/National Skyline put together Year of the Rabbit, who sounded like Failure only crappy.

C'mon, utter nadir is a bit much. I have to admit that Amputechture was kinda bad, but I really like De-Loused in the Comatorium, and Frances the Mute ain't half bad either. Man, Cedric and Omar really need Jim to balance out their eccentric musical style. At the Drive-In was a such a good band. The best of middlegrounds.

At the Drive-In were a pretty good band. It is a crying shame that seperately they have become Dag Nasty and Genesis.
I feel sorry for how badly Jim Ward's band sucks. I met him once and he was such a nice guy. It must be even worse for him knowing that Mars Volta are filling stadiums while his predictable guitar rock is moving absolutely no units whatsoever. Literally days after AtD-i broke up I interviewed him for an old zine and he started talking about how one of his favourite bands was the Foo Fighters. My first thought was that if he was going to make such an obvious ploy for mainstream success that I hoped it worked out for him since he was a genuinely likeable person. The only thing worse than having your band be an inferior shadow of a previous group is having it fall flat on it's face. Plus losing two friends to Mars Volta. Maybe there's still time for him but I doubt it.

I've never quite worked out why you guys hate The Mars Volta quite so much.
I mean, they're nothing special, but there's a billion more awful artists.

'You guys' presumably doesn't include me. The Volta are one of my favourite bands, I have basically everything they've released on my PC. It's Amputechture and the vast majority of At The Drive-In material that I don't like.
