i got to thinking and i was trying to figure out which band had the darkest lyrics. i don't mean the whiniest lyrics ala any number of homophonic emo bands or the most evil lyrics ala the devil worshipping masses of death metal screamers, i mean lyrics that are truly...disturbing/dark for lack of a better word. my pick is the xiu xiu.
take a gander:
from Bishop, CA
"should you be ashamed for more than that?
than that your daddy raped you silly
leaning my head on the refrigerator
crying for the stupid world we share"
from Nieces Pieces
"I can't wait to watch you turn from good to bad
I can't wait to tell your grandpa made your mommy
play stripper while your uncle watched
I can't wait to tell you I punched your mommy in the chest
In front of her new friends
I can't wait till you realize mommy's heart is broken
I can't wait to watch you grow up around the people who broke it"
From Support Our Troops, oh (black angels oh)
" Did you know you were going to shoot
off the top of a four year old girl's head
And look across her car-seat down into her skull
And see into her throat and did you know
that her dad would say to you,
"Please sir, can I take her body home?"
Oh wait, you totally did know... that that would happen"
From Walnut House
"I am the dumbest bitch on the planet
On the second floor landing sweating buckets
My arm pits are like black moons shaking at the end of
A cord my leather daddy dancing very near like a sweetheart would
Hurting my butthole like a sweetheart would
Oh, oh it's a little titmouse
Ah, ah little chickadee
Oh, ooh it's little ruddy duck
Don't worry mom"
From Hives Hives
"put that gun to my temple
put that gun to my heart
make me walk off the plank chi cha
all always in to the dark
A I D S H I V
i cannot wait to die
can?t you tell
can?t you tell
can?t you tell "
i rest my case
any other ideas?

You'll Have To Swim by Clann Zu
Early one morning as I went walking down by the filthy canal one hundred skull angels came crashing around me, their wings all set to flames, crying out for sanctuary from all that they had seen. I said how can I help you myself, I've been burning here for 35 years? Walk on, soul's gone, sailing seas of heartache. Float on, boat's gone, you'll have to swim all the way. And so I live a lonely life, there is no one by my side, there is nothing left down here for me. And I would never change a single fucking thing despite the fact I know the brutal vicious end, I still would have kissed you that day. I'll watch you burn. And so I keep walking down by the canal that never ends.Too many people are still breathing and I'm a coward for not ending them. Walk on, soul's gone, sailing seas of heartache. Float on, boat's gone, you'll have to swim all the way.

So basically you want Anal Cunt lyrics? There ain't no poetry to that. What's darkness without a bit of style and bombast? Abyway, by your criteria, why not a bit of Carpathian Forest?
Cold Murderous Music
"Why don't you kill yourself
Slit, your wrists
Slit the right one
Now the left.
As a symbol for our end.
Hang yourself in the stairs.
Throw yourself in front of
An eighteen wheel semi truck.
Try to stick your pencils, up your nose
And smashing it into a table
Take a shotgun
And blow out your brain.
You're not using it anyway.
People Don't Care.
This is how life goes.
Take a heroin overdose
Your death is your extasy
And it beats lusting for me.
Why don't you kill yourself
Slit your wrists.
Hang yourself in the stairs.
Throw yourself in front of
An eighteen wheel semi truck.
Try to stick your pencils, up your nose
And smashing it into a table
Take a shotgun
And blow out your brains
You're not using it anyway
People. Don't. Care.
This is, how life goes.
Take a heroin overdose."
or maybe Cattle Decapitation?
Pedeadstrians
"Humanity is a nuisance
Some people choose to die
When I come around the corner
There is where you forever lie
Walking with your kids
Their faces now marked with my skids
Accidentally taking your life
No accident...this was no accident.
What was another sunny day
Suddenly, a deathly shade of dark
You and your children now on my grill
Silhouettes on my door--shows who I kill
Killing pedestrians
Up ahead another one is dead
Untimely deaths
This is my specialty
I let God keep the score
The pedal hits the floor
...and I still want more...
Pieces of glass from my headlight
Stick in your eyes, impairing your sight
My auto a human blender
Chunks of viscera splatter my fender
Helplessly awaiting assistance
Rearview shows carnage much further in distance
In reverse I finish the job
Pull forward to reduce your family to globs
Transmission grinds face into pavement
Vertebrial folding and organ displacement
Witnesses distraught and disturbed
Your teeth beyond shattered, your mandible curbed
Gas tank now fills with your blood
Your mother's sweet baby now part of my hood
Should've watched where you were going
Now you're the chunks I'm blowing...
What was another sunny day
Suddenly, a deathly shade of dark
You and your family now on my grill
Silhouettes on my door show who I kill
Killing
Pedestrians
Up ahead...
A million more are dead"
Not what I'd personally go for, but hey. There's plenty more. My actual nomination would probably be something by Sol Invictus, either Sheath and Knife
"And the sun goes over the woods
And the sun goes over the woods
There was a sister and her brother
And they did so love one another
O Sister I'd lay ye down
O sister we'll gang to the broom
O Brother would you do so
For to my death I'd rather go
The folk they talk, they talk together
About a lass with bairn to her brother
O Brother you've done me ill
And we'll both burn on yon hill
O Sister go - go to my Father's stables
And take twa horses stout and able
She's on the with horse and he's on the black
With a yew tree bow slung to his back
They'd nae gone a mile but one
When her pains they did come on
I would give all my Father's Land
For a good midwife at my command
O brother take me to yon hill so high
Fetch your bow and your arrow and your good eye
And when you hear my loud loud cry
You bend that bow and you let that arrow fly
And when he heard her loud loud cry
He bent the bow and he let that arrow fly
And when he came to her side
The babe was born and the lady died
He took up his newborn son
Took him to the arms of a milk woman
Then he cut himself for good and sure
He'll not not gang to the broom any more
O Mother I have lost my knife
I loved it better than my life
But I have lost a better thing
The bonnie sheath that my knife went in
But I have lost a better thing
The bonnie sheath that my knife went in
And the sound goes over the woods
And the sound goes over the woods"
or
"Here am I, above this world
A face in flames and a knowing smile
Dream your dreams and tread your paths
It all ends the same, alone in the dark
And here am I drunk and bored
Even I don't want to drink any more
Here you are drunk and scared
You have finally realised that life's not fair
Outside they are gathering and their fangs are bared
For the bigger your fangs, the bigger your share
What deity made us, was it a good idea?
In theory maybe, in practice, oh dear
And here am I drunk and bored
Even I don't want to drink any more
Here you are drunk and scared
You have finally realised that life's not fair
Here am I, above this world
A face in flames and a knowing smile
Dream your dreams and tread your paths
It all ends the same, alone in the dark
And here am I drunk and bored
Even I don't want to drink any more
Here you are drunk and scared
You have finally realised that life's not fair"
That second one to me in particular is far darker and more disturbing than a musical dead baby joke.

!T.O.O.H.! has a song about raping an old hag (the brown town way) in a dark forest....I can think of weird lyrics, but nothing consistently dark...the Fall Out Boy translations are pretty dark.
-
I don't think anyone's going to top Khar, but I suppose I could suggest the Angels of Light/Michael Gira's My True Body. It's more disturbing if you know what it's about (a prison rape).
-
Khanate have a lyric in their 20-minute dirge, "Release":
You are blood
That's all
The song is about the moment where a guy kills someone.
-
Bah.
All those 'dark' lyrics lighten the agnst with theoreticals that probably won't happen to you - you probably won't get shot or fall with leaden angels along the black midnight. Its the simple statements of fact in otherwise happy songs that get me:
"Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?" - Flaming Lips
"And one day we will die and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea"
"How strange it is to be anything at all
"What a beautiful dream I have seen that flashes on on a screen in the blink of an eye and is gone from me" Neutral Milk Hotel
"Mama I don't want to die! Sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Queen
"All things go, all things go" - Sufjan Stevens
"Every moment of existence seems like a dirty trick" - Bob Dylan
"We *handclap* will *handclap* all *handclap* die *handlcap* - Jens Lekman (live)
"If I wasn't so happy I wouldn't be so afraid of dying" - The Boy Least Likely To
its like the second song Khar posted... even in the happy songs, you can't deny it - we're a stupid eyeblink in eternity that could shut at any time. i actually think death metal would be more cheeful then the simple statements in twee songs
-
Its the simple statements of fact
This is why I like Sol Invictus lyrics in this regard, and also some other similiar artists, ie. Blood Axis. There is a brilliant sense of hopelessness. There's some Blood Axis songs which are just so subtl, overwhelmingly dark, often just with sampling. "Desire shall fail and ye shall all die!" (The best in this regard though is probably either 'Sarabande Oratoria', as a recording of a fascist speaker sneers at you ("We cannot be defeated!") or 'Reign I Forever' in which Thor gloats at his ownership of the world:
"I am the God Thor
I am the War God
Here in my Northland
My fastness and fortress
Reign I forever!
Here amid icebergs
Rule I the nations;
This is my hammer
Giants and sorcerers
Cannot withstand it!
These are my gauntlets
Wherewith I wield it
And hurl it afar off;
This is my girdle;
Whenever I brace it
Strength is redoubled!
The light thou beholdest
Stream through the heavens
In flashes of crimson
Is but my red beard
Blown by the night-wind
Affrighting the nations!
Jove is my brother;
Mine eyes are the lightning;
The wheels of my chariot
Roll in the thunder
The blows of my hammer
Ring in the earthquake!
Force rules the world still
Has ruled it, shall rule it;
Meekness is weakness
Strength is triumphant
Over the whole earth
Still is it Thor's-Day!
I am the God Thor
I am the War God
Here in my Northlands
My fastness and fortress
Reign I forever!
Reign I forever!
Reign I forever!
Forlorn forever..."
If the tone and music haven't done it, then that last little line is a perfect jackhammer blow.

Not necesarrily the darkest, but I find it hard to find anything
I consider the darkest at the moment. Go figure.
"Finisterra" by Moonspell.
The world has turned once more inside
Brought up a message from our dead
The ones you love the most
Are the ones you hurt as deep
The world has turned once more inside
Anchored into captivity
The ones you wanted the most
The ones you buried under sea
Exit wounds, waterdrums, dream the eternal return
Tree of life rotting, inside, autumn leaves winter white
A light at the end of the earth
Whole world a ghost shading inside
True love waits for the bless of death
The doubt that sets me free
Not to remember anything
Stillborn, bloodlet, die in our feet like the trees
Earthsong, Neverland, let the blood have it's way
Alight at the end of the earth
Was it for this we sold our souls?
Was it for this we missed our chance
Of leaving?
For a lie at the end of the earth!

Not to be a show off, but am I the only person who found all the lyrics in this thread laughable and over-the-top-ridiculous?? You could argue that if I heard the songs I might feel differently, but I find a combination of subtlety and music together are the only way something can sound 'dark.' Even if you're singing "my father raped me on August 2nd, 1974" over the creepiest music of all time, it goes from being disturbing to tiresome. Now something like John Lennon practically screaming "Momma don't go/Daddy come home", that kind of shit really gets to me.
I was going to suggest Aphex Twin's 'Come To Daddy', but I don't take Richard D. James seriously enough to be disturbed. Yes, even after seeing the video.
If you want to read something truly disturbing, albeit not lyrics, I recommend picking up almost any book by Bret Easton Ellis. Parts of American Psycho and Glamorama were so...disturbing that I had to take a break from reading it.
-
Is there anything that, ya know, makes it better? The despair, i mean? I can't seem to find it.
I could post Nick Cave lyrics, but that wouldn't prove anything. Instead i'll post some They Might Be Giants (yes, a humour band):
I Hope I Get Old Before I Die (i haven't even heard this yet):
Sometimes I feel like being wispy
And once in a while I feel like being dry
But we're doomed and we're drowned by this feeling we surround
So I hope that I get old before I die
Ohhhhh
It's a long, long rope they use to hang you soon I hope
And I wonder why this hasn't happened
Why why why
And I think about the dirt that I'll be wearing for a shirt
And I hope that I get old before I die
Clear off the kitchen table darling
For on the kitchen table I must lie
I'm just tired for my wife just served the banquet of my life
And I hope that I get old before I die
Ohhhhh
It's a long, long rope they use to hang you soon I hope
And I wonder why this hasn't happened
Why why why
And I think about the dirt that I'll be wearing for a shirt
And I hope that I get old before I die
Ohhhhh
It's a long, long rope they use to hang you soon I hope
And I wonder why this hasn't happened
Why why why
And I think about the dirt that I'll be wearing for a shirt
And I hope that I get old before I die

Yeah I agree with you... disturbing to me isn't dismemberment and rape and gore and all that. Its listening to a calm, cheerful, redemptive song about how you and everyone you know will die, or realizing that your favorite bit of superhappy twee pop is called 'In Case We Die'... just that death is EVERYWHERE and isn't confined to crazy bands i don't listen to
that said i could post some Mountain Goats lyrics about John's stepdad beating him that are messed up

If you want dark lyrics, pick up Bethlehem's "Dictius Te Necare".
Darkest stuff ever.

Look guys, there's seriously no contest (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist.php?aid=13734), especially when you consider the context of these songs.
"Come To Daddy" is a hilarious video.
American Psycho is graphic and disturbing, I'll agree.

From the Stylus review (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/khanate/capture-release.htm) of Capture & Release:
Khanate vocalist Alan Dubin sometimes screams so shrilly that he goes black; passes out from the power of his own breath. Bassist James Plotkin blew four bass heads in the past year; Stephen O?Malley plumbs the darkest depths of A minor, his strings nearly disconnected from their neck. Whatever heads drummer Tim Wyskida hammers have passed the terror test; that skin company?s practically got a goldmine of an endorsement ad waiting in the wings. Significantly, the gear fails to acquiesce most of the time, beaten into the void as a beachhead by tidal torrent. Khanate?s sound is palpable textbook ratio; output over input is realized in grievous amounts of gain that shake the gonads of Gaia itself. Gong, cymbals, toms; an aluminum necked Travis Bean; three vintage Sunn Model-T 120-150-watt heads; a cadre of 4X12 cabinets; an Ampeg SVT head; various reverb and delay units. Muscle, breath, electricity: Sunn O))) is certainly denser, but Khanate is decidedly darker. Where Sunn crowd riffs together into pure concentrate, Khanate allow the basic elements of structure to separate; extremes are more extreme when they number; aural anvils anesthetize. Physiology has no recourse but to react to sound of this stripe.

I think some of jeff tweedy's lyruics in Summerteeth are quite dark in theme, for example:
Via Chicago
I dreamed about killing you again last night
And it felt alright to me
Dying on the banks of Embarcadero skies
I sat and watched you bleed
Buried you alive in a fireworks display
Raining down on me
You cold, hot blood ran away from me
To the sea
I painted my name on the back of a leaf
And I watched it float away
The hope I had in a notebook full of white, dry pages
Was all I tried to save
But the wind blew me back via Chicago
In the middle of the night
And all without fight
At the crush of veils and starlight
I know I'll make it back
One of these days and turn on your TV
To watch a man with a face like mine
Being chased down a busy street
When he gets caught, I wont get up
And I wont go to sleep
I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Via Chicago
Where the cups are cracked and hooked
Above the sink
They make me think
Crumbling ladder tears don't fall
They shine down your shoulders
And crawling is screw faster lash
I blow it with kisses
I rest my head on a pillowy star
And a cracked door moon
That says I havent gone too far
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
Via Chicago
Searching for a home
Searching for a home
Searching for a home
Via Chicago
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
and
She's a Jar
She's a jar
With a heavy lid
My pop quiz kid
A sleepy kisser
A pretty war
With feelings hid
She begs me not to miss her
She says forever
To light a fuse
We could use
A hand full of wheel
And a day off
And a bruised road
However you might feel
Tonight is real
When I forget how to talk, I sing
Wont you please
Bring that flash to shine
And turn my eyes red
Unless they close
When you click
And my face gets sick
Stuck
Like a question unposed
Just climb aboard
The tracks of a trains arm
In my fragile family tree
And watch me floating inches above
The people under me
Please beware the quiet front yard
I warned you
Before there were water skies
I warned you not to drive
Dry your eyes, you poor devil
Are there really ones like these?
The ones I dream
Float like leaves
And freeze to spread skeleton wings
I passed through before I knew you
I believe it's just because
Daddy's payday is not enough
Oh, I believe it's all because
Daddy's payday is not enough
Just climb aboard
The tracks of a trains arm
In my fragile family tree
And watch me floating inches above
The people under me
She's a jar
With a heavy lid
My pop quiz kid
A sleepy kisser
A pretty war
With feelings hid
You know she begs me not to hit her

So... if instead of posting crazy MySpace blogs filled iwth 'NOOOOOOOOOO I DON'T WANT TO DIE!' i got a microphone i could turn that into some sort of music?
Sounds easier then actually using my talent to write plays and poems and stuff

You could argue that if I heard the songs I might feel differently
I linked to the song whose lyrics I posted earlier. I'll link to it again: http://www.clannzu.com/media/swimdemo.mp3

I think Tom Lehrer does it well, with just the right amount of humor.
And we will all go together when we go.
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement,
An inspiring achievement,
Yes, we all will go together when we go.
We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyds of london will be loaded when they go.
Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
Well be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.
Down by the old maelstrom,
Therell be a storm before the calm.
And we will all bake together when we bake.
Therell be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.
-
I think Nick Cave has somewhat of a monopoly here, having written thirty years' worth of songs about smack, God, hell, redemption and death.
'The mercy seat is waiting
I think my head is burning/melting/any of the parts of that song'
Or, one of my favourite lyrics, from Loverman:
'R is for rape me
M is for murder me.'
-
The Normals' Warm Leatherette:
A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick - Let's make love
Before you die
etc. it's the deadpan delivery that does it.
i think if we pair this with khar's pedestrians song, we have the makings of a car-crash compilation. that'd be fun. we having a mix swap again any time soon?
-
some british comic did a lounge version of Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face...it was hilarious. and deeply disturbing.

I prefer Boyd Rice and Giddle Partridges version.
-
"Courvoisier" from Desert Sessions 7 & 8 (sung very softly and tenderly over soulful R&B instrumentals that randomly lapse into a dirge and then back again):
Covousier
Yeah, you know
Baby, remember all the good times we had
And all the condoms I never bought
And all the kids
We had
Where are they now?
I know
In my heart
Someday they'll all be okay
In jail
Wooo
I really miss you, since I killed you
Wooo
Something's missing
And I think you know
Just what it is
It's you
It's you
That's all it is. Download it, most of the effect is in the voice and instrumentals.
Also, "You Can't Quit Me Baby" by Queens of the Stone Age is fucked up.
It's a mistake, but who knows
Followed you home
Crawled in your window
This life is a trip
When you're psycho in love
And I know
Followed your friends
You were not there
Slashed and I cut
I bled in the sink
Heard what you said and
You're laughing baby
Slashed and I cut
And I do it for you
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
Wherever you are
You're solid gold
I'll see you in hell
Lastly, some Roky Erickson lyrics are pretty fucked up as well. I'll post some when I find them.
-
Rammstein has some pretty dark lyrics. Seems like every other song is about something sexually perverse. "Heirate mich" is about necrophilia, for example. The guy hangs around the cathedral his love was buried in and digs her up and sleeps with her. Kind of gross. "Zwitter" is hilarious in that it's about a hermaphrodite that doesn't get offended when people say "fuck you" because s/he can do that and enjoys doing so.
But the darkest lyrics ever?
I got this one, guys. Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising."
I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, its bound to take your life,
Theres a bad moon on the rise.
I hear hurricanes a-blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, its bound to take your life,
Theres a bad moon on the rise.
All right!
Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like were in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, its bound to take your life,
Theres a bad moon on the rise.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, its bound to take your life,
Theres a bad moon on the rise.

When I read that, I pictured somebody in an Invader Zim t-shirt with a raging erection, a slight trail of spit running down the corner of their mouth, typing it on an Alienware computer.

Lyrics to the MASH theme song, by Joe Locke
Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
[REFRAIN]:
that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...
[REFRAIN]
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.
[REFRAIN]
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.
[REFRAIN]
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
[REFRAIN]
A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
[REFRAIN]
'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you please.
but this is the utterly darkest song i can think of, and its from Monty Python. I was feeling undepressed before i posted these.... man:
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

The Divine Comedy:
Priests and fools say
We are but animate clay
Rude vessels
Housing immortal souls
But the dead only quickly decay
They don't go about being born and reborn
And rising and falling like souffl?
The dead only quickly decay
It would be swell
To see some folk burn in hell
But when they go
It's just pleasant to know
That the dead only quickly decay
-
Anubis - Suiciety. Over the top yes, but I like it. The first verses are so effective, mercilessly beating the listener down.
You've fallen in the thick black sea,
of your own emtyness.
Not aware of anything,
but your sad nothingness.
Sink!
You have no will,
to try and get back to the surface.
You have no hope of ever
feeling anything,
but hate!
For yourself!
And sorrow for you know not what.
There is no sense down here, but the touch of liquid black.
Desperate at your lonelyness,
you grope for unseen hands.
Reach for help that is not there,
just pain that never ends.
You found a chain of frozen links,
links such as yourself.
A rotten grip of other souls,
in your self inflected hell.
Scream!
As aeons pass,
an endless cry that noone hears.
Realize!
your not alive,
but not exactly dead.
Feel!
Senses reappear,
a foul taste and a rotten stench.
Altough you see nothing,
you certanly
feel your own decay.
Hand in hand the hopeless ones, wheep in harmony.
Forever forming their dark circle, their suiciety!

How 'bout "Torture Ballad" by Pig Destroyer.
the tape across your mouth says more than your words ever could you're squirming and screaming as I tease your eyes with glowing needles crawl slug drag your shattered legs behind I know no matter how much I hurt you she'll always love you more than me but all of this isn't for the sake of her love it's for the sake of my jealousy[/quote[

Don't know why I didn't post something by NiN in the first place.
"And All That Could Have Been" by Nine Inch Nails
Breeze still carries the sound,
maybe I?ll disappear.
Tracks will fade in the snow,
you won?t find me here.
Ice is starting to form,
ending what had begun.
I am locked in my head,
with what I?ve done.
I know you tried to rescue me,
didn?t let anyone get in.
Left with a trace of all that was,
and all that could have been.
Please, take this,
and run far away
far as you can see
I am tainted,
and happiness and piece of mind
were never meant for me
All these pieces
and promises and left behinds...
if only I could see...
In my nothing...
You meant everything...
everything to me.
Please, take this,
and run far away
far as you can see
I am tainted,
and happiness and piece of mind
were never meant for me
All these pieces
and promises and left behinds...
if only I could see...
In my nothing...
You meant everything...
everything to me.

When I read that, I pictured somebody in an Invader Zim t-shirt with a raging erection, a slight trail of spit running down the corner of their mouth, typing it on an Alienware computer.
I see you take a dim view of the art of music criticism.
-
One of the creepiest moments in my music listening bit was "Daddy, what'd you leave behind for me?" from Another Brick itw, pt.1. First time I heard it was all chills, and same with the second, which doesn't often happen.
But Acid Bath can get me going fairly easily as well.
If I took this cigarette and put it out on you...
Would you love me?
Her throat is soft
Her lips are red
Her thighs are white
Her heart is dead
Jezebel
Red rope
Burns around her wrists
Her blood is cold..like a serpents kiss
Do you love your whore?
I like to hear you beg
She crouched down in the corner with her head between her legs
Jezebel
Broken glass and dirty needles
Soul erosion truth
Electric god
Our superman found dead in a telephone booth
Shards of teeth
Ice pick abortions
Orgasmic death so warm
Lets die screamin'
Black goat semen
I can't hear you whisper "conform"
Hearts will stop and brain cells pop
Apocalyptic high
She screams bloody murder as they chop off her fingers
So this is how it feels to die
But it's ok
Yeah everything's ok
She was screaming about conspiracy
Talkim' about taking sides
I was masturbating, just contimplating
The cold love of suicide
Hearts will stop and brain cells pop
Apocalyptic high
She was screaming bloody murder as they chop off her fingers...
So this is how it feels to die
Their mix of screaming and solemn, creepy clean vocals is just about perfect here, as well.

"And All That Could Have Been" by Nine Inch Nails
In a similiar vein:
Mortiis - Everyone Leaves
I'm going back, thinking about all the changes.
I'm going back to all those wasted years.
I see the rise and fall of the world I lived in.
This time it doesn't seem real at all.
But I took the fall and on came all the changes.
All i had could not be saved - it was far too late.
Everyone leaves. In the end.
Everything dies. In the end.
It doesn't matter how hard you hold on.
Everyone leaves. In the end.
I'm going back to the times you went away.
I thought you thought that I was that monster.
I see the rise and fall of the world that I made.
I always wanted to take you with me.
And then I saw some people for the people that I thought they were.
In your painful absence.
Everyone leaves. In the end.
Everything dies. In the end.
It doesn't matter how hard you hold on.
Everything dies. In the end.
How hard can you?
Do you want to hold on?
How hard can you?
They all leave in the end.
How hard can you?
We all die in the end.

I see you take a dim view of the art of music criticism.
No, I actually want to make a living as a music critic someday, and I've written things that are just as, if not more, pretentious than that. But I just had a funny mental image and I wanted to share with you fine folks.

Lyrics to the MASH theme song, by Joe Locke
Oh man, hell yeah. So depressing.
-
Huh, well, no one's said Bright Eyes yet (probably because of the warning against emo crap), but I have a few that might qualify:
From Easy/Lucky/Free:
Did it all get real, I guess it's real enough
They got refrigerators full of blood
Another century spent pointing guns
At anything that moves
and
I set my watch to the atomic clock
I watch the crowd count down til the bomb gets dropped
I always figured that there'd be time enough
I never let it get me down
But I can't help it now
Looking for faces in the clouds
I got some friends I barely see
But we're all planning to meet
We'll lay in bags as dead as leaves
All together for eternity
... okay, that last one is a bit emo. I'll redeem myself with some Milton in a little while.
-
Too many people in this thread are confusing 'dark' with 'disgusting.'
-
"my life is a darkroom. one....big....dark.....room" i still wonder if davey havok lifted the quote from beetlejuice or thought he was a genius for coming up with such a...dark lyric.
-
It sounds tame, but I am always astounded by the lyrics to the Third Eye Blind song "Slow Motions." They normally don't make things with this sort of lyrics....
Miss Jones taught me English
But I think I just shot her son
'Cause he owed me money
With a bullet in the chest you cannot run
Now he's bleeding in a vacant lot
The one in the summer where we used to smoke pot
I guess I didn't mean it
But man, you shoulda seen it
His flesh explode
Slow motion see me let go
We tend to die young
Slow motion see me let go
What a brother knows
Slow motion see me let go
Now the cops will get me
But girl, if you would let me
I'll take your pants off
I got a little bit of blow we could both get off
Later bathing in the afterglow
Two lines of coke I cut with Drano
And her nose starts to bleed
A most beautiful ruby red
Slow motion see me let go
We'll remember these days
Slow motion see me let go
Urban life decays
Slow motion see me let go
And at home
My sister's eating paint chips again
Maybe that's why she's insane
I shut the door to her moaning
And I shoot smack in my veins
Wouldn't you?
See my neighbor's beating his wife
Because he hates his life
There's a knock to his fist as he swings
Oh man, what a beautiful thing
And death slides close to me
Won't grow old to be
A junkie wino creep
Hollywood glamorized my wrath
I'm a young urban psychopath
I incite murder for your entertainment
'Cause I needed the money
What's your excuse?
The joke's on you
Slow motion see me let go
Oh yeah
Slow motion see me let go
Slow motion see me let go

I've got one....I'll post both the German, and the English. Rammstein, not as dark as you'd like to thing (Du hast, is NOT Du hasst, as mtv would like you to believe.)
Dali Lama
Weiter weiter ins Verderben
Weiter weiter ins Verderben
Wir m?ssen leben bis wir sterben
Und das Kind zum Vater spricht
H?rst du denn den Donner nicht
Das ist der K?nig aller Winde
Er will mich zu seinem Kinde
Aus den Wolken tropft ein Chor
Kriecht sich in das kleine Ohr
Komm her, bleib hier
Wir sind gut zu dir
Komm her, bleib hier
Wir sind Br?der dir
Der Sturm umarmt die Flugmaschine
Der Druck f?llt schnell in der Kabine
Ein dumpfes Grollen treibt die Nacht
In Panik schreit die Menschenfracht
Weiter weiter ins Verderben
Wir m?ssen leben bis wir sterben
Und zum Herrgott fleht das Kind
Himmel nimm zur?ck den Wind
Bring uns unversehrt zu Erden
Aus den Wolken tropft ein Chor
Kriecht sich in das kleine Ohr
Komm her, bleib hier
Wir sind gut zu dir
Komm her, bleib hier
Komm her
Bleib hier
Wir sind gut zu dir
Komm her, bleib hier
Wir sind gut zu dir
Komm her, bleib hier
Wir sind Br?der dir
Dali Lama (english)
An airplane lies in the evening breeze
On board is a man with his child as well
They sit safely and warm
And so they fall into the trap of sleep
In three hours, they will be there
For mama's birthday
The view is good, the sky is clear
Onwards, onwards into destruction
We must live until we die
Humans do not belong in the air
So the Lord in Heaven calls
His sons to the wind
Bring me this human child
The child has still lost time
Then an echo jumps to his ears
A heavy rumble drives the night
And the cloud drifter laughs
He shakes the human cargo awake
Onwards, onwards into destruction
We must live until we die
And the child says to the father
Don't you hear the thunder
That is the king of all of the winds
He wants me to be his child
From the clouds falls a choir
which crawls into the little ear
Come here, stay here
We are good to you
Come here, stay here
We are your brothers
The storm hugs the airplane
The pressure falls quickly in the cabin
A heavy rumble drives the night
In panic the human cargo screams
Onwards, onwards into destruction
We must live until we die
And to the Lord the child pleas
Heaven take back the wind
Bring us unharmed to earth
From the clouds falls a choir
which crawls into the little ear
Come here, stay here
We are good to you
Come here, stay here
We are your brothers
Now the father holds the child firmly
He squeezed it very tight
He doesn't notice it's difficulty in breathing
But fear knows no mercy
So the father, with his arms
Squeezed the soul out of the child
Which takes its place on the wind and sings
Come here
Stay here
We are good to you
Come here, stay here
We are good to you
Come here, stay here
We are your brothers
And more from Rammstein, though not dark vaguely disturbing, I will post only the english
No Desire
I have no desire
I have no desire
I have no desire
I have no desire
I have no desire to hate myself
Have no desire to touch myself
I would have a desire to masturbate
Have no desire to try it
I would have a desire to undresss
Have no desire seeing myself naked
I would have desire with big animals
Have no desire to risk it
Have no desire to go from the snow
Have no desire to freeze to death
I have no desire
I have no desire
I have no desire
No, I have no desire
I have no desire to chew anything
Because I have no desire to digest it
Have no desire to weigh myself
Have no desire to lie in the fat
I would have desire with big animals
Have no desire to risk it
Have no desire to go from the snow
Have no desire to freeze to death
I just lie here
and I count the flies again
Desireless, I touch myself
And notice I am already long cold
So cold
I am cold
So cold
I am cold
I am cold
So cold
I am cold
So cold
I am cold
My Part
Seeking a well-built 18-30 year old
to slaughter
- The Master Butcher
Today I will meet a man
he likes me so much, he could eat me up
soft pieces and also hard
are written on the menu
Because you are what you eat
and you know what it is
it is my part (no)
my part (no)
there, that is my part (no)
my part (no)
The blunt blade good and right
I bleed strongly and I feel ill
I also must fight the faintness
I will keep eating with cramps
It's spiced so well and nicely flamb?ed
and served so lovingly on china
with it a good wine and soft candle light
I take my time, there must be some culture
Because you are what you eat
and you know what it is
it is my part (no)
my part (no)
there, that is my part (no)
yes it's my part (no)
A scream will fly to the sky
will cut through a flock of angels
from the cloud tops falls feathermeat
on my childhood with screams
That is my part (no)
my part (no)
there, that is my part (no)
yes it's my part (no)
and now the correct translation of Du Hast.
(I speak a bit of German, I did live there for a year, so I can more or less tell translations from publicity)
You Have
You
you have
you have me
You
you have
you have me
You have me
you have asked me
you have asked me
you have asked me and I have said nothing
Will you until death does part you
be true to her on all days
No
Will you 'til the death of the slit,
love her, even in bad times
No
Bend Down

bah. you can have your death metal... my indie pop is just as dark:
The Unicorns - I Don't Wanna Die
I spotted the glow over the mountain, tonight
My turn to turn in just when the weather's getting nice
I predict: i die in a plane crash
I see it now, i die in a car on tour
And there's no one to stop this
Nobody to loosen death's firm grip on me
Doo doo doo doo i die
It's true
Doo doo doo doo i die
And so do you
My prophecy is almost complete
My finger's on the pulse
(but where's the beat?)
We don't wanna die in the ocean
(drifting out to sea)
We don't want to die in our sleep
(ing bags)
DEATH buckle up boys, we're going for a little ride
Death! I just want one more breath!
Can you grant me one more please?
Thanks to for these lyrics.

I've got one....I'll post both the German, and the English. Rammstein, not as dark as you'd like to thing (Du hast, is NOT Du hasst, as mtv would like you to believe.)
Du Hast is a rather intelligent song, really. Hast and Hasst are almost the exact same when spoken, which gives the song a nice double meaning.
I have all their stuff and have read translations on it all. They are "darker" than I thought initially. Well, at least, they used to be. They've become slightly less perverse over the course of a decade.
-
The Normals' Warm Leatherette:
A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick - Let's make love
Before you die
etc. it's the deadpan delivery that does it.
i think if we pair this with khar's pedestrians song, we have the makings of a car-crash compilation. that'd be fun. we having a mix swap again any time soon?
car crash death songs were their own sub-genre in the 60s. see 'Leader of the Pack', 'Teen Angel', etc.....
-
I really hate to drop Skinny Puppy lyircs again as I always seem to when there's a lyric topic, but they are DARK, and sometimes really funny...but not in these two cases.
Killing Game
fallen angel head crashes dead out of control
lost memories staircase twists
darker rooms lit with left out toys
after playing men changes toys into tools
twisted playthings on the staircase fools whose weapons
represents the killing game
who taught the killing game??
awaken eyes sewn wearing glasses dripping tapping at the temple door l
ocked inside scream inner scraping tooth and nail nowhere to go
quiet retraces forcing light tears then pretend nothing blinds
minds closed in sanctuary closed in sanctuary
padded walls not quiet storms fury burned out killing time
who taught the killing game?
time's taught the killing game herself
no, i taught the killing game first
passing words distant pain remember trains of thought collide
no one view window pushing faces through
sharp cold glass poke bloody holes exposed
i taught the killing game first?
till at last you regret tortured animals
wake up time beckons death upon myself
eyes travelled harden strange no stronger
feeling tempting motion slows to a crawl
places his weaponry and it's a trap, let go
the springs snap, shut gazes, show sharper teeth
giving in to the jaws of death
i taught the killing game
i taught the killing game first
i taught
i taught
i taught the game first
first
first
Or this one:
Love in Vein
Dreams, not waking,
creeping down inside the quiet urns,
listen to the sound, crashing down into it,
the needle is warm in the arm, hate burns illusion,
pain pain pain
walk out in the street see the vacant eyes dreaming of the dream
unbroken economic repression plays a part
i wonder what im going through ....pain....wasted away
island body on a darkened sea to avoid chattering taped tape
taping human muttering warning flicker lights the candle burnsinside
a pain that never dies crawls up the back and waits for the lies tall climb edges
edges exhausts no night climbing higher ...... crawls wicked wire
cut throat explodes singing of the the vein
no desire great fate.....human heart explodes attacking
pointed sticks in sores the arms
wheres the warning?
warning shot the lights out
wheres the warning ?
needle is warm in the arm travels to the heart
human heart flags the blood
a halo of fire scarring made of flame the flower flavor find its worth
calls the tripping strings supporting the game of life
the pain...... broken chair, that horror tray of fear
wheres the warning?
warning killing me, attacking human heart
except my patience is giving up on me
river of track marks, volcano upon the arm
open sores allowing ants to crawl in and i wonder if i
missed the warning
missed the warning
casting away varnish crack ants symbolize decay
missed the warning, missed the vein
reaching out crying for
where is the warning?
heart exploding
human heart attack

The funny thing is, I know a homosexual ex-con sub who thinks of Skinny Puppy as his own personal anthem.............
No, you cannot respond to that, I've tried, it doesn't work.....especially when I add that he's Buddhist.....Yes, I do know some odd people.

Let's post something cheerful from a kids movie! This was on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. Way to traumatize kids, folks. Good jo!
Misery Is The River Of The World
(Tom Waits/Kathleen Brennan 2000)
The higher that the monkey can climb
The more he shows his tail
Call no man happy 'til he dies
There's no milk at the bottom of the pail
God builds a church
The devil builds a chapel
Like the thistles that are growing
'Round the trunk of a tree
All the good in the world
You can put inside a thimble
And still have room for you and me
If there's one thing you can say about Mankind
There's nothing kind about man
You can drive out nature with a pitch fork
But it always comes roaring back again
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
The higher that the monkey can climb
The more he shows his tail
Call no man happy till he dies
There's no milk at the bottom of the pail
God tempers all the winds for the new shorn lambs
The devil knows the bible like the back of his hand
All the good in the world
You can put inside a thimble
And still have room for you and me
If there's one thing you can say about Mankind
There's nothing kind about man
You can drive out nature with a pitch fork
But it always comes roaring back again
For want of a bird
The sky was lost
For want of a nail
A shoe was lost
For want of a life
A knife was lost
For want of a toy
A child was lost
And misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Everybody row, everybody row
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Everybody row, everybody row
Everybody row, everybody row
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Everybody row, everybody row
Everybody row, everybody row
Everybody row
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Misery's the river of the world
Everybody row, everybody row
Everybody row

Holy hell, I can't believe that was actually on that soundtrack! Not only are the lyrics pretty dark, but Waits is downright creepy with his vocal delivery. Hells of bizarre!
-
There is a reason for alot of shit in Shrek....It was directed by someone ejected from Disney. And like in Shrek 1 the castle was made surprisingly similar to the one in Disneyland, and Shrek makes the comment "think he's compensating for something?" Well...anyways, Disney is about as evil as you can get, beside well walmart...'nother topic entirely. Can't say much good for the largest childrens movie corperation that also is the largest pornographer in the world (Vivid is part of Disney.....yeah, surprised me too.)
-
oh wait....
i got that wrong. That wasn't on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. These 2 songs that were are slightly more cheerful:
Little Drop Of Poison
(Tom Waits/Kathleen Brennan 1997)
I like my town with a little drop of poison
Nobody knows they're lining up to go insane
I'm all alone, I smoke my friends down to the filter
But I feel much cleaner after it rains
And she left in the fall, that's her picture on the wall
She always had that little drop of poison
Did the devil make the world while God was sleeping?
There'll never get a wish from a bone
Another wrong goodbye and a hundred sailors
That deep blue sky is my home
And she left in the fall, that's her picture on the wall
She always had that little drop of poison
Well, a rat always knows when he's in with weasels
Here you lose a little every day
Well, I remember when a million was a million
They all have ways to make you pay
And she left in the fall, that's her picture on the wall
She always had that little drop of poison
And she left in the fall, that's her picture on the wall
She always had that little drop of poison
Artist: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds Lyrics
Song: People Ain't No Good Lyrics
People just ain't no good
I think that's welll understood
You can see it everywhere you look
People just ain't no good
We were married under cherry trees
Under blossom we made pour vows
All the blossoms come sailing down
Through the streets and through the playgrounds
The sun would stream on the sheets
Awoken by the morning bird
We'd buy the Sunday newspapers
And never read a single word
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
Seasons came, Seasons went
The winter stripped the blossoms bare
A different tree now lines the streets
Shaking its fists in the air
The winter slammed us like a fist
The windows rattling in the gales
To which she drew the curtains
Made out of her wedding veils
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good at all
To our love send a dozen white lilies
To our love send a coffin of wood
To our love let aal the pink-eyed pigeons coo
That people they just ain't no good
To our love send back all the letters
To our love a valentine of blood
To our love let all the jilted lovers cry
That people they just ain't no good
It ain't that in their hearts they're bad
They can comfort you, some even try
They nurse you when you're ill of health
They bury you when you go and die
It ain't that in their hearts they're bad
They'd stick by you if they could
But that's just bullshit
People just ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good at all
-
Chris T-T, a local musician who specialises in social commentary in his songs did a great song about fox hunting - it starts off as this folk-ey story telling song then casually slips in a line about the rich country gentleman fucking his daughter...
I can't for the life of me remember the album it's from, but it's dark because you're not expecting it.
Also, that Bright Eyes song 'easy/lucky/free' always struck me as more of an optimistic song about death - his lyrics are never that pleasant, but I saw that as something comforting, largely because I listened to it pretty much on repeat when I lost someone..
-
Mountain Goats - No Children
I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come up with a failsafe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town
Again in my life
I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die
I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
Yeah I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand
And I hope you die
I hope we both die
This is pretty much the only Mountain Goats song I've ever listened to. And goddamn is it dark as fuck. I'm sorta scared of listening to more of this stuff, I don't know if I want to listen to an album that'll depress me as much as an album composed of songs like this undoubtedly will.
-
I actually find that song uplifting... its kinda anthemic. Its the way he sings it, i think. Its also the end of the Alpha Cycle, or near the end, so the Alpha Couple is breaking up... i dunno. Its pretty uplifting the way he sings it... he's just positive about hoping they die... and the Alpha Couple have been trapped in this horrible relationship through the whole song cycle.
But yeah... i can give certain Mountain Goats albums one or two listens... i had to interview him, and i think the research is part of the reason i'm so depressed now.
hmm... i have way too many Mountain Goats lyrics... let's see if i can top that. Do you want songs about dealing with an abusive father, songs about the end of a relationship, songs about black metal, or songs about obscure classical history?
hmmm... i consider all the songs that aren't about the inevitiblility of death cheerful songs, so here's a cheerful mountain goats song:
I went down to the gas station
for no particular reason
Heard the screams from the high school
It's football season
Empty lot the station faces
Will probably be there forever
I climbed over the four foot fence
I was trying to sever the tether
Moon in the sky
Cold as a stone
Spend each night in your arms
Always wake up alone
I lay down in the weeds
It was a real cold night
I was happy 'til the overnight attendant
Switched on the floodlight
Walking home I was talking to you under my breath
Saying things I would never say directly
I heard a siren on the highway up ahead
Kinda wished they'd come and get me
Frost on the sidewalk
White as a bone
Tried to get close to you again
Always wake up alone
And as I was crossing our doorstep
I hesitated just a moment there
Remembered the day we moved in to our small house
'til the vision got too vivid to bear
You were almost asleep
Halfway undressed
I lay right down next to you
held your head against my chest
And a guy with any kind of courage
would maybe stop to think the matter through
Maybe hold you still and raise the question
Instead of blindly holding onto you
But we crank up the heat
And you giggle and moan
Spend all night in the company of ghosts
Aways wake up alone

'Dance Music' by the mountain goats always struck me as dark but in a playful way - that guy is gifted.
