So, I hear the Pumpkins are reforming. I am cracking the fuck up.
Billy Corgan's solo career was a joke. No-one gave a shit, and after thinking that - somewhat justifiably - he WAS the Pumpkins, he's had to reform them because he knows that without some combination of the words 'pumpkins' and 'smashing' on a banner above his hair, no gives a crap about him or his music.
Billy Corgan, over a six-year period, has owned himself.
-
Dammit. Why did this have to happen?
Now one of my coworkers will be blathering on about how "totally kickass" the "punkins" are for like 8 months.
Dammit.
-
Tommy supports people being utter fucking cunts for little reason! What a surprise.
-
I loved the Smashing Pumpkins, and currently simply like them, but I think Tommy was spot on.
-
nah you've got this wrong. this is Billy cashing in on the 90's fad thats about to come in. he's taking advantage of the fact that kids think retro is cool and the 90's are about to be retro
the thing with that is i really think its possible for them to make a good album. Remember Gish? that was cool, so was Mellon Collie. im certain they wont let me down, but of course we have to remember that every member of the Pumpkins has an ego roughly the mass of the sun. that is what is gonna wreck this album
-
Hah, I'm thrilled personally. I can't wait for them
to come back together. And in my opinion, Corgon
was and IS the band. I probably wouldnt listen to them
if he wasnt in the band.
And who cared about his solo career? Hm, actually, I did.
*pops in CD*
-
Corgan has been an asshole, but I don't see how that matters. Who cares what the man's like, as long as the music's good? Hopefully, if the Pumpkins reform, it will be to revive their glory days, not to create a second coming of, say, Zwan.
-
"Human compassion"? Hah, as if you can judge what others feel or mean when they write. People like you make me giggle uncontrollably. And I dont even feel the need to defend his voice, if you dont like it, fine.

I agree on both points. I'm hoping this is going to be a Smashing Pumkins CD. His solo project was all right, but much like I miss Mike Patton being in Faith No More,
I miss the ol' Pumkins sound.
-
Smashing Pumpkins?
Zwan?
*yawn*
Moves on.
-
His singing voice is like someone is sharpening a pencil in his arse and his lyrics lack an ounce of human compassion.
When did we start talking about James Hetfield?
-
I think the reason I like Smashing Pumpkins is for their slower, ballady songs. This is particularly why I like Adore and to a lesser extent Machina. I guess even though I know Corgan is an asshole, I love his songs and lyrics from time to time.
-
Siamese Dream is worth it for the guitar sound alone.
-

You just compared Mike Patton to Billy Corgan.
BAD. NO. STOP IT.

Uh, no, actually. They're not in the least bit similar, I was comparing the loss of their old bands and the dissapointment I felt about it. Actually comparing them would be rather frighteningly weird/stupid. XP

c'mon, our religion is a beautiful thing. don't make fun of it.
just listen to our prayer and hymns: "DO-DA-DA-DOO-DA-DOO DA DOO-DA-DOO-DOO-DA-DOO DO-DO"

I think I've got it!! Morrissey is to late 80s depressed teens as Billy Corgan is to mid 90s depressed teens. You could argue that Moz is better in every way, and I'd probably agree. But the same kind of people who latched on to the Smiths and Morrissey in the 80s are the same kind of people I see liking the Pumpkins/Corgan today.

The Smashing Pumpkins are like sex in a VW Golf, a good idea till you actually try it...

I know he's talented, but God? Don't you think that diminishes the contributions of the other members of his band? Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, maybe even Tomahawk?

There was a MuchMusic interview with Billy Corgan a few years back, around the release of his book of poetry. When asked what the significance of the title Blinking With Fists was, Corgan said, "It was when you were a child and did this." Then he did this:

This sums up my opinion of Mr. Corgan rather nicely, if obliquely.

Oh man, The Smiths and the Smashing Pumpkins are in my top five favourite bands of all time. What does that make me?
Yeah honestly, the Smashing Pumpkins aren't the best band of all time, and they always had insanely indulgent and/or ambigious lyrics (hahaha Gish), but I still love them nonetheless. I like almost their entire collection of b-sides, even that kind of bad cover of JD's Isolation! Yes, his post-Pumpkin career was pretty bad, comparing his solo stuff to Machina, you'd wonder WHAT people where bitching about in Machina. I like Machina! I like AdoreSiameseDreamMCISPiscesIscariotSiameseDreamGishpreGishMCIS-era-bsides. Are they the cream of the music crop? Technically, no. They're just really indulgent personal-angsty albums, but people like them for those reasons! Whatever, let Billy do his thing, it's not likely he's to eat your first born any time soon.
I don't have high expectations for the album, but there is always hope.

I really like one Smashing Pumpkins song, '1979', i think i prefer that one song to most songs by several other more respected artists which i also love. I think that this may be because it is a huge New Order ripoff.

Oh my god.
My eyes.
They've been raped.

It was designed for Internet Explorer using Microsoft GIF animator, so I guess the short answer is "no," and the long answer is "you're doing it wrong."

Oh please, Greenday? Taking advantage of being retro?
"We've been around all through the 90's.. .We could just keep playing and such, or we could.. .TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BEING RETRO!"
They never dispersed and came back together, they've simply BEEN around. Go ahead and dislike them, but saying they're taking advantage of being "retro" is hilarious.
And as for accusing Corgon of taking advantage of being "retro"... I'm sorry, are you a mind reader? You really must be. I mean, you can see into his head and see that he doesnt just want his band back! That's amazing! Teach me how, teach me how!

Guys, I...
I kind of liked Zwan?
By that I guess I mean I bought their album in a bargain bin and enjoyed it for a few weeks, and I haven't listened to it since. But I liked it okay at the time.
-
theres a cd store i go to sometimes that has a "limited edtion" section.
the zwan album was in there.
and i laughed.
-
There's this forum I go to sometimes, they have a music section.
I saw a godinpants post there.
And I laughed.

its easy. find someone who has put together two projects from one of the biggest bands of the nineties and manage to somehow make them both fail. then question why someone like that would try and rebuild it into its former glory
then look at the state of the world around us and pop culture and notice how, slowly but surely, we are wandering around the end of the 80's. 90's are next, and Corgan, being the smart guy that he is, is cashing in on it
-
I agree with E. Spaceman, at their best they're doing a good reinterpretation of a better band's sound. At worst, Corgan's shrill voice is almost impossible to listen to and the guitar sound is angry in a comical way. That said, I think that Siamese Dream was a decent-to-good record and that there was some cool riffage on Gish. Mellon Collie sucked with the exception of a few standout tracks.
-
I think this thread has gone downhill since my picture, everyone. Just like Melon Collie went downhill after "Tonight, Tonight."
-
I don't actually hate the Pumpkins. In fact, with a different frontman I think they would have been acceptable.
Billy Corgan, I have absolutely no regard for him at all. I have a lot of friends in Chicago who have run into him over the years and I think 'God Complex' would scarcely cover his emotional problems.
the band Silversun Pickups sounds like SP without Billy Corgan! Huzzah!
-

Because he wants to be in his succesful band again?
Seriously, that's just pessimistic speculation into the mind of someone. I'm sure Corgon wants success back, but he proibably wants his band back too. Because that's what it's about, really. Wanting to make your art, and make money off of it. I'd do the same. And that's not selling out.
We all want glory, but that's not a bad thing in it's self. People like to pretend it is though. Especially when they don't have it and just observe it.

The obvious answer is 'a bit on the depressive side', i think

thats not the problem i have. i am quite the massive pumpkins fan, and the thing that scares me is that they will be reduced to a gimmick band "from the crazy 90's" and remembered for it instead for Gish, Siamese dream and Mellon Collie
see also abba, who can thank retro cool for a good part of their psuedo-comeback fame

Shit, the (wo?)man has a point. If the new album doesn't suck I might end up getting lumped in with the "flavor of the day" crowd.

Ah, well, I have faith Corgon wont do that. That doesn't really sound like him. If it does turn out that way, I'll be quite dissapointed in him.
....And Abba came back... I didn't know that. *pause* Why do I find that mildly frightening?
-
I really liked Iha's solo record, sorta west coasty 70s singer/songwriter.
-

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you
-
ABBA has always been one of my favourite groups. Seriously. Since like grade two.
-
I don't think Corgan wants to reform just to cash into some retro trend. He just sucks solo, even though the Pumpkins were almost a solo group, there was just something in the Pumpkins which kept Corgan from being overly shite. And he just misses that quality because he knows that he sucks at the moment.
I love Iha's record, Let it Come Down! It has such terrible lyrics but it's all endearing nonetheless.
By the way, I think some people are overexaggerating Corgan's vocals. His vocals only became supra whiny on MCIS.
-

What era Pumpkins? Good, being Gish/Siamese Dream/Pisces Iscariot, or superomfgshitt, being Mellon Collie and Adore.
I kinda like Machina, but I'm placing that album outside of the Good to Shit Space-Time continuum here.

We all want glory
Do you know that this isn't true?
You should know that this isn't true.
Well, technicly. There are some individuals who I guess want to live normal lives under the radar. But then again, one man's glory is another's nothing. I meant "glory" more in the way of "we al lwantto make money doing what we enjoy." That would be "glorious". But I admit it's the wrong word, really.
-
By "glory" you mean "fulfillment," I think
-
That being said, glory is still an appropriate word to use, cos we're not just talking about "Making money doing what you love," we're talking about "Making money doing what you love, part of which involves having thousands of people screaming approval at you at a time."
-
I really only ever hear the word "Glory" used in one of two contexts.
One is that awesome civil war movie.
The other one involves holes in walls, let's just say.
-
Glory ?noun
1. very great praise, honor, or distinction bestowed by common consent; renown: to win glory on the field of battle.
2. something that is a source of honor, fame, or admiration; a distinguished ornament or an object of pride: a sonnet that is one of the glories of English poetry.
3. adoring praise or worshipful thanksgiving: Give glory to God.
4. resplendent beauty or magnificence: the glory of autumn.
5. a state of great splendor, magnificence, or prosperity.
6. a state of absolute happiness, gratification, contentment, etc.: She was in her glory when her horse won the Derby.
Allright, that actually is the right word then.
I recoil from the word 'glory'.
"Recoil"?! I knew it! You're a serpent!
-
Or a gun.
-
That being said, glory is still an appropriate word to use, cos we're not just talking about "Making money doing what you love," we're talking about "Making money doing what you love, part of which involves having thousands of people screaming approval at you at a time."
No we're not. If I could eke out a living playing to crowds of between fifteen people and a hundred then I would. It is a huge assumption to make that most people would have more fun or be more comfortable playing in front of a fickle throng than in front of a few dedicated people who legitimately care about what is being produced, which I would rather have any day.
-
Same here.
