as an experiment during work (where i was kitchen hand possibly the worst job in existance) i made a playlist of one song (breathe off dark side of the moon) and left it on repeat for the whole time (keep in mind i was of course using stero head phones) and proceded to send myself insane (although it did take a good while)
my question
what is a good similar repeating riff that although good in short doses is likely to sned anyone insane
other good candidates include the bonus track off hit to death in the future head
-
Iron Maiden - Aces High.
I had that in my head for 2 weeks once. Not only was it in my head, any time I could listen to it, I was compelled to! It was like my muse was trying to tell me something. ANYWAYS. The point is that at the end of it I was fully going INSANE. But I still loved the song. Still do, in fact. Iron Maiden is probably one of the few bands ever that can get away with this.
Just about any of the famous Megaman 2 riffs are also likely to do it. Dodedooo do do do dooooo....
-
Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. It will melt your brain.
EDIT: Man what a mundane 500th post... OOOOH LOOK AT MY SHINY NEW STAR!
-
Bioxeed. Google it.
-
'The Sweetest Thing' by U2. I had the piano bit, ding..ding...ding...-ding, ding 'whoa whoa, the sweetest thing' in my head for like, a fortnight. That's all I knew of the song.
-
I too have had "Aces High" by Iron Maiden drive me insane. I always wanted to listen to it. The same thing happened with "Invalid Litter Dept." by At the Drive-In.
-
I once had the opening guitar part out of Neko Case - Deep Red Bells stuck in my head over and over for about three hours of horrific, hallucinogen based introspection, when all I wanted to do was just friggin sleep.
Although I suspect that bringing drugs into it drastically alters the requirements of what a riff needs to do to drive you insane.
-
any album by orthrelm (http://www.millionraces.com/orthrelm.htm) ....your brain will melt like ice in hell
-
Velvet Underground- Sister Ray. I can never listen to this song more than three times in a row before it starts to drive me crazy. But it's a good kind of crazy.
Also: Pavement- Fight This Generation. Mostly the ending part. Good in small doses, but repetitive and irritating otherwise.
-
The bass line to 'A Salty Salute' by GBV has me addicted, but even I can only listen to it so many times.
-
Mary McCaslin's fucking terrible version of "Help!" Yes, the Beatles song. The one that shouldn't ever be covered. Yes, Mary McCaslin. The one who should've taken up self-amputation instead of guitar.
Despite the lack of repetitive annoyance, your brain will cease function about four seconds into the first play.
-
I once had a single drum fill stuck in my head for weeks on end, and I had no idea what song it was from. It drove me batshit. Wen I finally worked out what it was it felt like weight being lifted off my shoulders.
P.S; It was the opening fill from Bad Religion's "Let Them Eat War"
-
Brooks Wackerman is in the fuckin' pocket.
-
Damn right homie. Unfortunately when he's in the pocket, in my brain, one fill, over and over, for literally weeks non-stop, it started to make me go a bit nutty
-
Alright, let me clarify: Both of these are the good kind of insane, okay? okay.
Both "Somebody To Love" - Queen and Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Little Wing" cover have formed their own elite club of songs that have been stuck in my head for a month or longer. This never happens to me. How did it manage to happen twice? I DON'T KNOW.
-
Mine was Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran. But I couldn't remember the whole lyrics so I just had the "and I'm hhhungry like the wooolf" part. Just that line over and over and over. Grr
-
I had Glory Of Love by Peter Cetera stuck for years, and i could never remember the name until Est told me one day.
-
I had Propagandhi's "With Friends Like These Who the Fuck Needs Cointelpro?" stuck in my head. Needless to say, innappropriate for public, as I found out the hard way.
-
I don't know what CD it is my boss plays over the speakers at work (he doesn't like it either but it's company policy) but I've gotten quite good at tuning things out because of it.
-
Wait wait wait...
Circles by Soul Coughing. It's the most repetitive thing ever. I like the song but god damn I cannot listen to it more than once in a row.
-
I had the last thirty seconds of Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road" stuck in my head for about a week. That is something you wish you could turn the hell off.
-
how about an insanity that would cause most "normal" people to run into the streets and slaughter innocent children? "It's a small world" that fucking disney song is HELL FUCKING HELL I tell you OMFG I want to garotte the asshole who wrote that one. Had it stuck in my head for a FUCKING MONTH, I had to memorize Bullet with butterfly wings just to get rid of the damn thing.
-
I commonly get quick guitar riffs stuck in my head, and it sucks because I can never remember who they're by,
so it drivves me mad. Or then I'll get a line from a song stuck in my head and I keep saying or singing it without
meaning to, quite often in public or in the middle of something.
I had to memorize Bullet with butterfly wings just to get rid of the damn thing.
*quirks eyebrow* I thought you didn't like Smashing Pumpkins...?
-
I had the opening riff to the song "Baiting The Public" off the new Fucked Up full length for about a week, and couldn't remember what it was from...drove me batshit crazy until I listened to the CD again tonight and figured it out.
-
I can't say I'm a fan boy of the Pumpkins, I don't detest them, I used to own Mellon Collie, and that was the only song I could find that could replace that fucking satanic work in my head.
-
listen to van halen's 'beautiful girls'
just hearing that song once, no make hearing just 5 seconds of that song, is enough to drive me insane. i can't even begin to imagine what listening to it repeatedly would do.
-
Whiffs, fragments, hooks and riffs from various Cruachan songs. Trust me ... this stuff sticks.
-
i just membered gloken pop by spiderbait (that'll teach me for listening to comercial radio 10 years ago)
-
I feel strangely compelled to hear every song listed in this thread at least 50 times consecutively, put together in a playlist that lasts days.
By the end of it, i will have achieved Godhood.
-
"Mouth For War" by Pantera is a really common song that pops in my head randomly for no reason a lot of the time. It's really strange because I rarely listen to the song.
-
I listened to the Benny Hill Theme on repeat for about 5 hours straight with headphones on. While it's not a riff, it still does the trick nicely.
But really, there's no competition (http://youtube.com/watch?v=mJeHfvQD8D8). Thanks to YTMND, I had the chorus of this song stuck in my head for almost a month. ... And now that I listen to it again, I bet I'll have it stuck in my head again. Seriously, it's the worst thing ever and it's guaranteed to send everyone insane.
-
I just can't get you out of my head, boy your lovin is all I think about,
I just can't get you out of my head, boy, it's more than I dare to think about.
La la la, la la la-la la, la la la, la la la-la la.
Annoying and kind of ironic. This song can actually keep me from sleeping if I just can't get it out of my head.
-
seriously listen to this the whole way through twice and then try and get the melody line out of your head (i couldn't find the video for it...it has production on it which possibly makes it worse)
glockenpop - spiderbait (youtube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma74OehBQ2w)
-
Even though Grandslam is by far my favorite Spiderbait album, and Glokenpop is a really fun song, I too must admit I have had that glock part stuck in my head on repeat a few times.
-
My mother puts songs on repeat in the car on long road trips. Songs that are bad. Songs like "Like Wow!" by Leslie Carter (it's on the Shrek soundtrack).
My mother has the worst taste in music in the entire world. Like, wow!
-
Oh, just remembered this one: LEEKSPIN! (http://www.leekspin.com/)
It is a parody of a shock site, and it has the HAPPIEST song evar on it. (It's a bit of a Finnish folk song called Ievan's Polka, done by a group called Loituma. A cappella scat singing FTW)
-
Another message board I frequent http://www.randomville.com/Daily/viewforum.php?f=512 had a charity drive where several participants would subject themselves to (usually) terrible songs while recording their declining emotional stability over the course of the day. My choice was Phil Collin's "Another Day in Paradise" and now, almost two months later, that insipid electric piano riff pops into my head from time to time.
If there was a moral of this, it is that Phil Collins is a toilet.
-
Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" is another that gets stuck in my head often.
It's been there for about 3 or 4 days now.
-
I just can't get you out of my head, boy your lovin is all I think about,

La la la, la la la-la la, la la la, la la la-la la.

oh fuck you clara, now i'm going to have that thing stuck for days.
-
That song is evil. Pure, concentrated evil. The Locomotion, on the other hand, is pretty freakin' sweet.
-
Wait wait wait...

I once had this song stuck in my head for weeks. Around the same time it had that Flinstones music video thing on Cartoon Network.
"Just wreck it; you've insured the thing."
I dealt with it by learning how to play it.
Currently though? Sabre Dance. OMG.
-
...Skyclad version of the sabre dance? Then I'd join you in despair.
-
Though not good anyway, repeating the first seven notes of "It's a Small World" will drive anyone nuts. I once tested it by humming it nonstop around someone, pissing him off. Then I quietly repeated the first 3 notes an hour later on the other side of a noisy room, and he heard them. A dangerous tool, indeed.
-
oh fuck you clara, now i'm going to have that thing stuck for days.
won't you
staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
*weeow* *weeow* *weeow* *weeow* *weeow* *weeow*
-
I blame guitar hero for these two I had stuck in my head.
Iron Man - Black Sabbath
Free Bird - Lynard Skynard.
I don't really like free bird. But i STILL can't get that damn solo riff oot me 'ead.
I also had 'Magical Trevor', 'Crabs' and 'Breadfish' from Weebl's Stuff stuck firmly in me head at my old job. No one has looked at me weirder than those customers.
-
Oh man, I feel your pain on Magical Trevor and the accompanying weird looks.
-
Rock Lobster. Not any of the vocal parts, but the little riff that goes before the cowbell comes in, and before the singing. ARGH.

YES.
famousninja - your avatar from N-Game, addictinggames.com? much time wasted in my software apps class with that game.
-
Collective Soul - Heavy
("and all your weight, it falls on me, it brings me down")
-
Shit what the fuck none of my posts are actually posting
