I really don't know. I do know I do know I've found some covers I like, rarely better than the original. However, I do enjoy listening to some covers, if they are done respectfully of the original intent of the song. I was just wondering if any of you had come across any bands who do covers of some of the better older artists.
-
Johnny Cash did a good version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
Also, Porcupine Tree should cover "Bright Eyes".
-
Covers that are better than the originals:
Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of "Higher Ground"
Lenny Kravitz cover of "American Woman"
Those are just about the only two I can think of off the top of my head that I like better than the original versions of said songs.
-
The Primus cover of the Charlie Matthews Band's "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", mainly because I am a huge fan of Claymation videos. (There is SFA difference between the two versions, as far as I recall...)

Those are fucking awful covers, so I'm going to assume you're joking.

You guys are such complete fucking assholes.
It's kind of endearing, though.
-
Narr I fucking hate you. Not only did Lenny Kravitz pull the musical equivilent of urinating on Mother Theresa's grave, he made massive amounts of money doing it.
Phish & DMB All along the Watchtower is one >good< cover.
-
Can you make this thread "Are any covers better than the orginals?" so everyone else can participate a bit more?
Yes, i think the spiritualized cover of the trogg's Any Way That You Want Me is far better, and that the Evie Sands version completely crushes them
-
Testament's cover of Holier Than Thou by Metallica is about thirty thousand times better than the original. There are probably more, but I can't think of any of them right now.
-
Metallica's cover of Turn the Page by Steve Miller Band is infinately worse than the original.

You're a peach, yourself.
btw "equivalent"

The spell checker here is dysfunctional apperently on my computer. But, at least I have a good enough vocabulary to know what that word means and how to use it properly :-P

Lenny Kravitz cover of "American Woman"
Please qualify this statement. I disagree, as the Guess Who version actually comes from a place where it makes sense (American culture as seductive woman vs. Canadian culture's consistent on/off relationship with the societal stimulus coming from the south). Plus, Kravitz butchered the original guitar riff.
-
Fuck qualify it, that statement would stand in a court of law as a "Justifiable Homicide reason". Lenny Kravitz is the worst thing to happen to 70's music since Puff Daddy.
-
speaking of which, i like his cover of kashmir
-
Metallica's cover of Turn the Page by Steve Miller Band is infinately worse than the original.
It's by Bob Seger and I like it. In fact, I'd say that almost every cover on that album I like better than the original, with the exception of "Astronomy" by Blue Oyster Cult, and a few others.
-
The Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of "Havana Affair" is definitely better than the Ramones' original, but the Ramones sucked, so it's not a daunting task to do something better than they did.
It pisses me off when people hate the Chili Peppers. People who hate the Chili Peppers have no reason to hate them.
-
This thread is really terrible. Like worse than the wookiee sex thread (http://wookiee sex thread).

I can give you 28 pretty good reasons from this year.
-
So i was watchign some sketch comedy show from 2 years ago, and they had a skit/song about RHCP writing the same song again and making money of it. It was mildly funny, but the fact that it was still topical 2 years later is kinda telling.
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone does a great live cover of 'Graceland'
Johnny Cash's covers are usually better then the originals - 'Hurt' and 'Mercy Seat'

Threads like this remind me why I avoid the music section of QC as often as I have.
It's impossible to voice having an opinion without someone who vehemently disagrees. For fuck's sake, I doubt I could make a thread saying "I think Beethoven is one of the most brilliant musical geniuses to ever live" and that'd get flamed by people who hate classical music.
It's absolutely ridiculous. Tommy, you said in this thread something about playful ribbing is okay. Well, perhaps. But when every single post is "ribbing", it ceases to be playful and in fact becomes rather standoffish.
And the worst thing about this post? I'm typing it knowing full well absolutely no one else will regard anything I have to say, because apparently my musical tastes are "mainstream" which obviously means I'm an uncultured twat-face, right?
/rant
-
Just because you musical taste is "mainstream" doesn't mean it's insignificant. So long as you don't own a Copy of BSB - Millenium or Brittney "I like fucking with hats off" Spears we'll be cool. I've got alot of "mainstream" shit on my play list. The only reason I can post here is because, like my name says I live with fire on a daily basis. So, flaming ribbing joking jesting insults and murderous threats really don't bother me. Frankly because I can give almost as well as I can take.
BUT, for your own personal safety, don't try ribbing tommy....he's a kungfu forum master, he will rape your children and burn down your house, before he comes outside.

Guys, people disagree without music. Taking personal offense because somebody on the internet thinks a band you like sucks is stupid. As long as argument doesn't turn into personal attacks, I don't see a problem with it. The point is somebody (too lazy to check) said 'I fucking hate you' because Narr said he liked Lenny Kravitz. What they should have said was "I think Lenny Kravitz's cover of American Woman is really bad".
But really dude, Lenny Kravitz is pretty bad. I don't think any lesser of you for it, but yeah.

To get back on topic, I think there have been a bunch of Bob Dylan covers that are better than the originals. Perhaps not mind-boggiling better, but still good. To staet with, there is Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower, which I really dig, but I'm just massively in favor of distorted guitars. The Whitlam's did a cover of Tangled Up in Blue which was rather nice, though I admit I'm having trouble recalling how the Dylan original went. There was a version of Boot of Spanish Leather I once heard on some community radio station, which was very nice indeed even though it was a straight cover. I think it was by Nanci somebody, but I can't really remember.
In general, I find Dylan covers totally worth checking out, because they generally are preety awesome songs that aren't really hard to play, so one would have to work hard to make the song suck. Of course, that doesn't mean a cover is better, but it doesn't stop the cover beign nice ^_^

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
MY MIND, SHE BURNS!
-
I would have to argue that Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower was as good as Dylan's original. Hard to compare, since they were very different in sound.
-
Cat Power's cover of wonderwall is fantastic.
-
In my defense, I tell my best friends, and closest companions that I fucking hate them. In all honesty I can't >truely< hate anyone. I'm the type of person who would choose nuclear holocaust as the best method to get someone I hate, I'm that extreame....
Back to the topic, I think the reason why Bob Dylan covers can be better than the original is because, though Dylan was an EXCELLENT lyricist, mumbling songs is not the way to sing...I think. (Corky and the Juice Pigs do a really really good impression of Dylan.)

I'm that EXTREME....

I'm just concerned about what words FireStarters avatar say about him.
-
Emilio, you just single-handedly redeemed the thread. Kudos!
-
Just to clarify.
Ramones = Bad.
RHCP = Good.
Is that what you just said?
Is that right?
Yes. The Ramones started punk rock. So what? I mean, they're overrated. And to be fair, they didn't really "start" punk rock. I mean, MC5 was around before they were and Radio Birdman started in the same year the Ramones did. So basically, you've got a band that plays two chord songs and gets credited with starting an entire genre. See, I view the Ramones pretty much the same way Kharbevnor views Nirvana.
Why do you people hate the Chili Peppers? It really baffles me. Is it because of all their mainstream success?
-
I can't speak for everybody here, but mostly I hate the Chilli Peppers as an instinctive reaction against every shitty bassist that went to my high-school who thought Flea was the greatest thing to ever happen to the bass.
Also, that whole "sounding more mediocre and bland with every successive album thing doesn't help them either.
-
I'm not crediting MC5 with starting punk (you're right, it was the New York Dolls and the Stooges), I was just making my point.
I can understand you not liking the RHCP, but to be fair, only their early stuff is straight funk. Their more recent stuff is funk-influenced guitar rock. Generic? Yes. But it's pleasant to listen to.
-
I'll say that By The Way was a solid record, actually, and Californication had some okay tunes.
-
Oh....and my avatar, it's from my extensive collection of Jeremy Bernal.
-
I may get some violent disagreement, but I liked Dream Theater's cover of "Carry on Wayward Son". It's harder, but then if you know Dream Theater, you've already figured that out. I don't think I'd say that I like it better than the original, but it's certainly well done.
-
I wonder if Fugazi will ever release another album?
-
That's not what I wanted to hear. :-(
-
I'm surprised at the lack of google informed posts about my avatard...
-
your avatard is a retard

That is true.
But say it with me: white. boy. funk.
-
You're funny, but white boys can be funky.
-
I was just countering your claim that I had no reason to dislike them.
There are worse bands. At least they have good taste.

Frankly Ostrich has pwned this whole thread....me included for having an Ian Anderson avatar....game over.
