I always tell myself not to read lists like this, especially when they come from the height of journalism like Blender magazine, but I end up doing it anyway. Weirdly, though, I only had problems with three.

Primus does not suck. Primus fucking rocks.

The Doors do not suck, but they aren't as amazing as people tell you they are.

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer aren't completely terrible.

The Doors are pretty much one of the most amazing bands ever.  The backlash they've gotten recently makes me hate people.  They remain my favourite band.

the sad part is that list displays even more ingnorance than the Time p.o.s. i linked to last week.

Post by: Storm Rider on 03 Dec 2006, 08:15
Actually, with the exception of the Doors, most of the bands on that list are pretty bad. That doesn't mean I couldn't think of a couple hundred bands worse than Primus or Kansas without really thinking about it, though.

Seriously, they are indirectly saying that Limp Bizkit is better than Primus. That's unacceptable.
Title: Re: 50 worst bands ever.
Post by: FireStarter on 03 Dec 2006, 08:28
Uhhh....They missed a few, the put a few decent bands in there (Kansas?) and forgot the ones that truely make any lover of instrumentation's skin tear itself apart and flee screaming. Lenny Kravitz (yes there is a band there) For his uninspired bubble gum shredding of many a good songs, he takes uncreativity to a whole new high by getting famous off of covers. Metallica, OMFG Metallica, where to start, Oh, yeah they suck, they have little if no skill at anything they do, and they do it in a pentagram. Satanism and poorly written music backed up by a propaganda machine that would make Bush weep with envy.

And I agree with Storm Rider, Primus may have lacked lycical ability, but the absolute genius of Les Claypool as a Bassist by far makes up for that. Limp Bizkit is like a combination of the worst of a triumverate of evil (though the bassist was good) It's like someone took Vanilla Ice and injected him into the Danny Divito clone of Lars Ulrich, and then mixed it with a distorted version of Spinal Tap.

Primus, when vocals aren't involved, are actually pretty fun to listen to.  As soon as lyrics enter the equation, I feel like committing heinous acts of genocide against the redneck population.

Also, anyone taking this list seriously needs to grow a funny bone.  Yeah, sure, a lot of the bands on that list do, in fact, suck, but if you read the reasons, it's typical overblown sarcastic madness that's typically associated with "Worst Ever" lists.  I read it for a chuckle and got a few.

The Doors and Oingo Boingo kinda surprised me. (Fuck, a band can be pretenious and good, okay?)  But, yeah, there are definately much worse bands. Also, a solo artist is not techniqually a band.

I disagree with The Doors and Primus.  However, I don't think Primus themselves would really care that they were on the list, since they don't take themselves too seriously.  They're so comical, and their lyrics are incredibly silly.  They might actually find it funny that they're on that list.

Fair enough, but do an 'okay' band deserve to be on a 50 worst of all time list?
Title: Re: 50 worst bands ever.
Post by: Johnny C on 03 Dec 2006, 11:21
To be fair, Limp Bizkit needed to make that list and so did a lot of bands. However I frankly do not think that much of The Doors merely because their music has not aged particularly well and wasn't really that awesome in the first place. Take, for example, the lyrics to their hit song "Light My Fire":

VERSES THAT JUST RHYME WITH "FIRE"
KEEP ON RHYMING WORDS WITH "FIRE"
I LOVE WORDS THAT RHYME WITH "FIRE"

COME ON BABY LIGHT MY FIRE
END ANOTHER LINE WITH "FIRE"
KEEP ON ENDING LINES WITH "FIRE"

*ORGAN SOLO*

There are some bands that certainly should have been on their though.

I've got a friend who's obsessed with MOR and AOR. I don't think he's being ironic.

Korn and Limp Bizkit should have been on that. The Doors and Kansas? Not so much

Hey, what, they put fucking Skinny Puppy on this list...but not KoRn? They list Manowar because they're metal and...gay? Okay, it's quite obvious that the world hates me and everything I stand for, I might as well go off and live in a cabin. I hear music shitter than a lot of this (but by no means all of it) on the radio every day (fucking communal kitchens). One I really am going to vehemently agree on is the Goo-Goo Dolls, 'Iris' is my girlfriends best-friends favourite song, and whenever we cadge lifts off her she plays it roughly non-stop back-to-back with Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve.

Ooh, actually, we could compile our own lists! But I would never be able to decide whether the number one should stay as ICP (It's a gooood choice) or be replaced by my personal nomination, Oasis.

ELP is the second worst band ever?? That makes me want to go on a killing rampage, it does.

Quote
Appalling fact Singer-bassist Greg Lake performed on a $10,000 Persian rug that roadies vacuumed before every show.

What they don't tell you is why he had that rug.  They were on tour and Lake kept getting the living shite shocked out of him by his microphone, so someone suggested he get a rug to stand on, and that would take him out of the electrical circuit.  So, as I said, they were on tour... in a place where getting $20 indoor carpet sections from Wal-Mart was not an option.  Whoever he sent to get the rug came back with the above-mentioned.  It kept him from getting shocked, so he kept using it, and still has it decades later.  If I ended up getting suckered into using a 10k rug, you can bet I'd get as much mileage out of it as I could.

Why he's not higher up on the list is beyond me. His "remix" of "Starry Eyed Surprise" by Crazytown is ABSOLUTELY INDISTINGUISHABLE from the original. At least, I could never tell the difference.

Anyway, beyond the Doors, my other problems with the list: Blind Melon (they weren't great, but they certainly don't deserve this), Skinny Puppy (haven't heard much, but what I have heard hasn't been bad at all), Primus (they don't deserve this sort of company), Oingo Boingo (pretentious does not always mean bad), Tin Machine (sure, by Bowie's standards they were terrible, but they had moments).

They got a bunch right, but far too much wrong.  Silly Blender.

They had an article for the fifty worst songs ever, which was only cool because they had Ted Leo pick five songs from their list, grab his acoustic guitar, and play them for change in New York's Union Square.? They were: "We Built This City" by Starship, "From a Distance" by Bette Midler, "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd, "Party All the Time" by Eddie Murphy & Rick James, and "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes.

10) That band.
9) This band.

7) Her band.
6) Their band.
5/4) Two way tie: Those bands.
3) Its band.
2) Your band.
1) Insane Clown Posse.

I find it kind of funny that most of the responses here aren't "Blender got 45/50 of the worst  bands correct," it's "Blender added a few bands that I disagree with."

I mean, anyone could come up with 1. Britney Spears 2. Milli Vanilli 3. Kenny G, and so forth, and have everyone basically agree, but no one would read that list, and no one would talk about that list. They had to pick a controversial stance to have any relevance.Unfortunately that stance was that prog rock sucks, which I strongly disagree with, but they were smart for taking it.

I also find it funny that there argument for Primus was "Musicians and smart but uncool people love them, others hate them." So, people who know music like Primus you say? I will be sure to avoid them in that case.

Is Primus that band that has one album with guest appearances from both Tom Waits and Fred Durst? 'cause thats just weird...

Starship are worse because not only are they bad but they taint the memory of a good band while singing about a rock and roll scene that they were part of when they were a good band. White Rabbit is still a great song, but 'We Built This City' hurts it somehow

So wait. This wasn't ACTUALLY meant to be a "50 worst bands" list, but instead was meant to be a "50 bands that are good enough to stir up debate when listed as the 50 worst bands, but not good enough to make it look like we are just making this shit up" list?

Essentially what you are trying to say is that this entire article is the equivalent of the person who got attention in high-school by intentionally and calculatingly becoming "the wacky one"

I hate this fucking list now.

Yeah but whats the point of writing an article with bands EVERYBODY hates? You're not going to get any discussion or people passing around the link or showing it to their friends... so no publicity. Nobody is going to defend Limp Bizkit who's halfway literate, but  put The Doors and Yes on a list and you get some debate going. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint.
The Doors backlash is pretty annoying though
and i really like 'No Rain'. it was a good song, not just a good video

Weirdest morning at work ever.
Yesterday was a normal morning at work. Boring white people like John Mayer and Dave Matthews Band announced tours, along with semi-interesting white people like Ben Kweller.
But this morning I learned about Limp Wrist and the wonderful world of 'queercore' and 'gay hardcore straight edge punk'. If you're in Australia, catch Limp Wrist coming to a tiny venue near you!
I'm not homophobic, but 'queercore' belongs in the 'bad genre names' thread, and how niche is 'gay hardcore straight edge punk'?

I've got a mate who's got the 'coolest' musical taste I know... he knows EVERYTHING in every genre, collects all the zines, dresses well, whatever... and he owns all 4 ICP albums. He mostly takes them out to horrify people.

I think it's still pretty much the hipster consensus that if you have very complex music with long songs and unusual time signatures and complex solos and whatnot then the band is obviously concentrating more on the technical than emotional side of the music and is obviously shite, despite any evidence you may present to the contrary (like pretty much every prog album I own). Of course, these criteria are completely ignored if you're listening to Jazz, because hipsters are generally possesed of a sort of self-deprecating racial awareness which has remained completely unchanged since the sixties, which basically implies that all music made by black people must be amazing and white people have got no soul. See also: defending gangsta rap whilst criticising metal for being 'cartoonish', also the obligatory presence of one Miles Davis and one Public Enemy album on every hipsters list of favourite albums (otherwise completely populated with white middle class art rock).

Mmm, I agree with some of this list, but it is terrible in some places

Rick Wakeman? No, his stuff is a little weird, but incredibly impressive. You can't expect virtuosos to play predictable, approved music.

Primus? No, they are hella crazy, but got some good stuff. See above, and apply to Claypool

Alan Parson's Project? No, some really cool stuff here. Who else has made a decent Poe concept album? No one, that's who.

Yngwie Malmsteen? Lord no, his newer stuff is crappy, but his greatest hits are very good. Maybe not overly-versatile, but man, can he make with the meedlies!

Kansas? Shut up Blender, just shut up.

Lol! I was skimming through this looking for bands I knew and proudly sporting my Doors shirt when I came across the Doors themselves in the list. Didn't see that coming. They're not the best, but they certainly do not deserve to on that list. Don't diss the Lizard King man...

and, on occasion, the squeedlies.

Heyyy, is that a reference to the argument you and I had where I called Black Metal "a novelty at best?"  I'll have you know that I have since rescinded that stance.  I still don't like it that much, but I respect the artists more now.  Anyway, I did also acknowledge that gangsta rap is pretty much just a novelty.

Everyone be quiet.  the_tard obviously wants us to acknowledge that Syd Barrett was some sort of genius or other.

If by "genius" you mean "fucking crazy raving madman", then yes. He was. As a whole, I like post-barret Floyd more than Barret-Floyd, but the two(?) albums he contributed to were pretty fucking fun.

Then again, as an acid freak, my objectivity is somewhat damaged on this topic.

Also I am kind of disappointed Rush were not on this list. I could have really gotten offended about it if they had been. As it is,the compilers just wind up looking like wankers.

Never liked drugs, never liked prog.

I'm not saying the two are directly related but I don't believe they're mutually exclusive.

Everything's pretty much agreed with except for The Doors.

Even though ICP is basically the worst band to have ever existed, I still feel like Avenged Sevenfold deserves that number one spot. They are shittiest band EVER.

mmm...

1.Nickelback
2.Nickelback
3.Nickelback
4.Nickelback
5.Nickelback
6.Nickelback
7.Nickelback
8.Nickelback
9.Nickelback
10.Nickelback

That said, most people have already expressed my sentiments about a lot of the list.  Tin Machine were shit in Bowie-land, but pretty decent otherwise.  Oingo Boingo and Primus didn't suck. I saw the Spin Doctors live (lead singer sans beard) when I was 15 at the Ohio State Fair (ha).  I actually liked Toad the Wet Sprocket.  And nobody sucks as much as Nickelback.

Is there somewhere that I can hear his version of Party all the Time? i really, really need to hear that.

Also, am I the only one here who likes the Gipsy Kings?

I don't think any of his versions of those songs were ever recorded anywhere.  However, if you meet him, and he happens to have his guitar on him, maybe he'll play it if you ask really, really nicely.

my parents love the Gypsy Kings, so i was subjected to them for most of my life. bad stuff. 'No Rain' didn't just suceeed 'cause of the video - it was a good song/catchy song/whatever, i liked the song. so Blind Melon shouldn't be on the list. and Oingo Boingo? WTF?

They seem to have forgotten about Bon Jovi.

I didn't think Bon Jovi was that bad. But he seems like the sort that you either like somewhat, or hate immensely. I don't know any hardcore Bon Jovi fans.

Of all the bands on that list I have to disagree with the inclusion of the Crash Test Dummies.

They aren't a serious band, they're just fun to listen to, and a welcome departure from most of the stuff I heard in the 90's.

Also, Blender licks nards.

Their cover of Hotel California on the Big Lebowski soundtrack is pure genius.
