i want soul, hip hop, new-/dark-wave(ish??) electro/brit/whatever, and like... things that don't suck.

generally i like punk + indie.

i dislike jam bands and anything nu.

I'm sure I'm too late to the party, but you should buy Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat. I find it hard to take people seriously as music obsessives if they don't at least have a copy of it. I'm not saying they have to like it, just have a copy somewhere, somehow.
