I am joining a Nerd Rock band, with some friends of mine. I wanna study the music, the only two nerd rock bands I know are Weezer, Hellogoodbye, and Nerf Herder. So give me some good Nerd/Geek Rock bands to listen too.
-
....They Might Be Giants?

Yeah, I'm a jerk...
What the hell kind of genre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek_rock) can encompass Fountains of Wayne and REM? Is that not a leetle broad?
I guess that is a hint to not pay attention to Wiki for basically anything.

I am guessing my friends were leaning more towards the more poppy type of Nerd Rock like Nerf Herder. Atleast, I hope so ,because listening to They Might Be Giants makes me want to kill myself.

You gotta fight!
For your right!
To maa-aasturbate!
EDIT: I think Devo, The Phenomenauts, and The Aquabats would probably qualify. Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, though.
-
Barenaked Ladies.
-
Uh. Does Lemon Demon count? Lemon Demon should totally count.
-
the only two..*counts 1...2...3*
tripod kindof of count although technically they're comedy
-
you can check out my band, we're kinda nerd rock www.myspace.com/therumourmil
/shameless plug
check out alien ant farm, Junior/Senior, Space and possibly Bends era Radiohead
-
Ookla the Mokk are very nerdy
Final Fantasy... the Arcade Fire's violinist writes an album based on D&D magic schools and names himself after a videogame series....
-
If you're counting Weezer, then The Rentals, and maybe Shinobu.
-
I was completely planning on saying the Rentals. And Shinobu is awesome!
Ozma?.. it's basically Weezer pt. II
-
If you count metal... Blind Guardian.
-
MadassAlex, you are a disgrace to metal listeners everywhere for saying Blind Guardian is nerdier than Rhapsody. Seriously.
-
Atom & His Package!

Atom & His Package!
that was the first time i moshed
at Simon's Rock
in a Sandman shirt
KISS and the Misfits are nerdy in their own way. Weezer used to be
-
Definitely check out Pain. A somewhat obscure punk revival band from Alabama, they created some of the best nerd anthems of the 90s.
-
Oh, snap. I remember Pain. They were like Oingo Boingo as a pop-punk band. Good times.
-
I personally consider Yes to be nerd rock. I mean, have you ever seen Rick Wakeman?
But I have a feeling that's not the kind of nerdiness you desire...
-
would old Green Day be considered Nerd Rock? not like their American Idiot album because it was most entirely shite. but stuff from like Dookie or International Superhits.
-

Isn't that three bands?
As for actual bands...Lemon Demon totally counts (http://www.myspace.com/lemondemon (http://www.myspace.com/lemondemon)

Outside of 'Geek Stink Breath,' which namechecks speed and so might not be considered so, I'd say that they don't.

-
Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers is another must.
-
I'm pretty sure All Girl Summer Fun Band (http://agsfb.com/) fits nicely into this genre.

Int'l Superhits? How is that old?
Maybe Kerplunk? Dominated Love Slave was bad enough that you could consider it a "geeky" song.
-
Cake, possibly? And Cracker. I like them both a lot.
-

*hangs head*

Blind Guardian are still very nerdy, though.
-
Datarock are more nerd electro, but their hit is Computer Camp Love.....

In that respect- Kraftwerk.
-
The Feelies.

Especially the first LP (of which that is the front of the sleeve)

fixed.
-
Sorry.
-
lol
-
OK Go's definitely got the whole geek chic thing down, at least that's what I think.
I mean the whole treadmill thing, come one, that's some pretty awesome geekiness at work.
-
anyone heard the plus ones? its got a guy from mtx and a guy from screeching weasel but they play songs kind of like weezer.
-
Mates of State perhaps.
-

I have a couple of their songs. They're pretty excellent.
-
yeah i have one of their e.p's. a-m-y and she's my sister are probably my favourite songs. its so fucking catchy but with just a bit more cheese factor than mtx.
-
are we talking about nerdy bands or bands that deal with nerdy subjects? Barenaked Ladies have some great nerd refs in their songs... nerdy people in bands is way too big a topic. you end up including Elvis Costello, 'cause he was once a computer programmer and looks like a nerd, or the Mountain Goats 'cause John Darnielle sometimes blogs about videogames

After spending two hours DLing music from various bands, I think I can safely say that Wizard Rock (It's music about the Harry Potter books) is the nerd/geekiest music you will ever find. You can DL some freebies here:

Sigh. Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys played at the Tacoma Public Library shortly before I moved, but I didn't get to go see them because I was busy trying to pack up my entire apartment into two suitcases to take with me.
That was fun.
The Whomping Willows are quite good, if I recall correctly.
-
I don't think any of these bands play anywhere near where I live. Stupid Wisconsin...
I suppose I could actually go -check-, but I don't think I'd want to go see just -one- band. I'd want it be some kind of a festival type thing, you know? it's fun though!
