Title: Need recommendations
Post by: Inanimated on 06 Dec 2006, 05:33
I've been reading a lot of recommendation threads and getting some good music, but I'm still curious about a lot of stuff.

1.I've been recently getting into some grindcore recently, but aside from The Locust and an impossibly long list of unsigned bands' myspaces sent to me by a friend I have no idea what to listen to in this genre.

2.I've been trying to find some bands with interesting bass. I don't really have much yet, but I like Mike Watt and most of the stuff he's been involved with, if that helps any.

3. There's a couple bands I've been curious about:

Blood Brothers- I have Crimes, which was pretty mediocre in my opinion, and Burn Piano Island Burn, which was more interesting, but still not impressing me. Is there any point in venturing further into their discography?

Converge- I have Jane Doe, and Unloved and Weeded out, both are excellent, but I'm looking for more of the hardcore sound found on Unloved and Weeded out...what's a good album?

Godspeed You! Black Emperor- I have Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven, and like the second disc. I'd like to know some of their other good albums.

Grindcore:  !T.O.O.H.! is pretty awesome.  You can't hear the bass too well, but he's amazing.
Bass:  uneXpect, the guy plays a 9-string bass.  Pavor.  Atheist. Cynic. Etc.

For GY!BE, you really should just get everything.  It's only 3 albums, plus an EP, in all, and they're all spectacular.  GY!BE were just a great band.  I like Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven the best though.

If you want good grindcore, I would reccomend just hitting yourself in the head with a frying pan until you lose conciousness. Same effect, but the massive head trauma will make you forget how bad the music is

Grindcore:  The Great Redneck Hope, Pig Destroyer, Nasum.  Pg.99 isn't exactly grindcore, but they're close, and really amazing.

I personally think Jane Doe is Converge's best album, but their new one, No Heroes, is pretty damned amazing too.  It's a little more raw, and hells of angry.  You might like it.

Godspeed:  F#A# (infinity) is amazing, and also if you like their stuff, check out A Silver Mt. Zion too.  ASMZ and GY!BE share members.  Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward is their best, in my opinion.

Specifically, the album Rad A Trest.  Song where you can hear the bassist do his thing:  Kali.  Honest to god, one of the greatest swansongs ever.
