Title: Timeline. Motherf-ing TIMELINE.
Post by: camelpimp on 12 Dec 2006, 00:44
My dad should stop watching shitty movies on the Sci-Fi channel.

....at least I didn't catch ALL of it?

(But I got my revenge, I did. I made him watch the last hour of Urgh! A Music War.)

No, no.

At least it wasn't Frankenfish.

FUCKING UNDEAD FISH.  IF A FISH IS GIGANTIC AND UNDEAD AND EATS PEOPLE GET OFF THE FUCKING DOCK MOTHERFUCKS.

I HATE YOU SCI-FI.  STOP BEING ENTERTAINING ONLY 65% OF THE TIME.

That really wasn't such a bad movie, apart from that ridiculous plot device with the red light.

I've avoided seeing Timeline. The book is alright though. I'm surprised that the film apparently turned out so shit, since the book had obviously been written with the idea of turning it into a movie script in mind.

I enjoyed twister, which Michael Crichton worked on, and Jurassic Park wasn't bad. The Lost World and Jurassic Park III have pretty much turned me off of watching anything by him and adapted to the screen, though.

Timeline the movie was fracking awful.

It basically had nothing in it that made the book any good.

At least the Sci-Fi channel there doesn't just play Thunderbirds and Star Trek: Voyager OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

I completely agree. :( The book was wonderful, and the movie kind of... well, it kind of sucked ass.

Especially the time-travel animation. Laaame.

Bad movies aside, is it just me or has the SciFi Channel been taking a slow and miserable downwards spiral?  I remember when they showed actual movies, like Carrie and The Faculty; in fact, it was the "big summer event" for them to start showing these movies that had been theatrical releases.  Now, we're lucky if we get any of those.

There's also that whole ECW thing.  Why is there wrestling on a science fiction station?!  Unless one of those guys is a real badass and has a jetpack and laser eyes, I don't see the point.

On a side note: I didn't think Timeline was that bad... if you ignore the book.

I can't remember a time that the Sci-Fi channel wasn't total crap. No, wait, I do. It was crap with the exception of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, then after it was canceled, it was ALL 100% prime crap.

See, while I've read quite a bit of Chrichton, I didn't think Timeline was all that amazing. Yes, it's better than a load of other so-called "intelligent" sci-fi lit out there, but it still didn't impress me as one of his works of genius. I wonder if I should read it yet again, see what I'm missing...?

I never expected the movie to be good. I've lost my faith in movies duplicating literature by now. Invariably, the book was/is better.

State of Fear was a good Chrichton book that I hope never sees film.

The best part was that guy ranting about Global Warming being a scare tactic created by hippies, and those bits would likely get chopped

I tried to read that. It just seemed like constant legal babble to me.

Anybody read/seen Sphere? I enjoyed that.

I've read Sphere. Good book.
What about...let's see...Eaters of the Dead or Congo? Congo had me snickering at its expense several times, but I enjoyed it.
Probably only because primates scare the bejeezus out of me, but hey.
I thought Prey was decent, too. Except now nanobots get on my nerves whenever they're brought up in conversations. x_o

Timeline was horrible, yes.

But the Time Machine was only good because of guy pearce. But i can't take the movie seriously as when i see him i start singing to myself, "A desert holiday, lets pack the drag away, you take the lunch and tea, i'll take the esctasy, f*** off you silly queer, i'm getting out of here, a desert holiday, hip hip hip hip hooray!".

But yeah... lol... only connection between Timeline and Time Machine is "TIME!" hehe... oh dear, i'll leave now.

Two things:

Primer was cool. Even if no one could really make it make sense. Props to cheap filmmaking.

Sci-Fi (at least before they stopped regularly providing it to my house) did indeed have some quality programs. I.e. Farscape and Battlestar Galactica (!!). Plus, they showed Quantum Leap. Come on.

Primer was an awful movie.  I've seen it twice now and think it's a horrible waste of time.

Timeline's conversion from book to movie may have been one of the worst such adaptations I can remember; the book was very entertaining, but the movie was horrific.

As for the Sci-fi network in general, I'd be interested to see what percent of their revenue comes from (and what percent of costs goes back into) Battlestar Galactica.  It is a great and extremely polished show.  The writing, acting, and special effects are orders of magnitude better than basically every other original program I've seen come out of the network.

I first saw The Andromeda Strain when I was a kid; back when the cold war was something to be scared about.  That movie was pretty epic.  I randomly catch it on TV, and can still remember being worried about shit like that happening.
