So as most of you probably know Tower Records is going out of business. Whatever, they had a good selection but overcharged like hell. In any case this means some sweet bargain hunting.
Some things I've found:
Japanese Noise Rock compilation: $3.45
Pavement- Wowee Zowee: $6.00
Pavement- Terror Twilight: $5:00
Young MC- Stone Cold Rhyming: $1.00 (yes this is the "Bust A Move" album)
Brazilian Post-Punk Comp: $3.45
Blonde Redhead- In Expression of the Inexpressible: $7.00
There are about a 15 other ones. I've been 3 times so the discounts on those vary. Most of the obvious albums you'd want are gone now. You have to just walk through and hope you see an artist you recognize. But the bargain prices means its usually worth taking the risk and grabbing something that looks interesting.
The best part is seeing which albums no one wants even after a 70% discount. Hilariously there were still seven copies of that ridiculous Matt Friedberger album.
Anyone else stopped by?
-
I may want to pick up some Pavement.
-
You should buy a copy of that ridiculous Matt Friedberger album. Half of it has some pretty good pop tunes on it. I mean, weird ones, but still pretty good.
-
Christ, I would totally buy that Matt Friedberger album at a reduced price!! I haven't bought a Fiery Furnaces album since Blueberry Boat for various reasons (I love the album, but so much other music to get!!) but I would still snatch it up.
When this semi-local chain, Media Play, closed shop I bought like 12 CDs at once discounted. I don't remember all of them but I do know I got Wilco's live album and Being There for like 5 bucks a piece.
-
Yeah, I grabbed:
Children of Bodom ~ "Follow the Reaper"
Nevermore ~ "Dead Heart in a Dead World"
Amorphis ~ "Am Universum"
Soilwork ~ "The Predator's Portrait"
For almost the price of about two CDs.
Not even to see it burn.
I'm sorry, are you out of your mind? I need to know.
-
You guys realise that you're actually giving money to what's left of Tower records? I mean, sure, they're pretty much dead but they DID overcharge, and as far as I'm concerned you shouldn't be paying a penny for any stock left, no matter what it is.
You pass a homeless on the street. He smells like urine and has chunks of broken glass in him. He really needs to shave.
"Excuse me sir!" says the man. You realise he looks strikingly familiar.
"Can I help you?"
"Can you spare some change? I'll dance with my pants around my ankles if you do."
You consider this offer. A homeless man dancing with his pants around his ankles is an awfully funny thing too see.
"I can't help but feel like I've seen you before..." you say.
"Well, back when I had a mansion and a lot of spare money, I was a TOTAL dick. I'd run around and fuck people in the ass and charge them extortionate prices for the smallest little things. Perhaps I rear-ended you or one of your relatives in the past? Anyway, those days are GONE. People stopped paying attention to me and I went bankrupt!"
"Yes! That's it! I remember now! You raped me this one time and charged me ?20 for a can of coke!"
"Really? You'll have to be a little more specific...anyway, that spare change?"
"Oh yes! How rude of me, here's my wallet."
-
Just look at it as being more like, "Oh, hahahaha! And just look at you now! Okay, fine, here's $2. Now don't spend it all in one place! Hahahaha!"
-
some stuff
You're kind of skewing your value judgements. The tramp in question is vending cheap CDs.
-
He's still an asshole I don't like. I don't want him to have my money. I'd rather keep it in my pocket. He could sell me a penguin for a ?1 and I still wouldn't buy it.
Well, maybe for a penguin.
I can get my cheap CDs from all over the place. Record stores close down all the time.
Now, if only Gryff was here so we could listen to him....
-
But in exchange for your wallet, the tramp is doing two things:
1) giving you hells of CDs
2) dying
If record stores go out of business, what difference does it make that it's a bigger one that's going under? It's just a bigger sinking ship to pillage.
-
You could probably take a shit in the back of the store or something. Let them know how you feel.
-
It's funny you should say that cos the only reason I ever go into Starbucks is to take a shit.
I guess the same thing could apply here.
I wouldn't even do that. Save it for Pete's
-
I love the meaninglessness of "the principle of the matter". It gains you nothing, and just doesn't actually make much sense. but if it makes you happy, wha-hey.
Me, I'm going to ignore purely emotionally based rules that I can set up for myself and buy stuff I want while it's nice and cheap. I'm a sellout that way, y'know?
-
Hah, actually, I do believe those things are the undoing of most people.
But I never said it made you an idiot or a dreadful person, nono.
-
You should buy a copy of that ridiculous Matt Friedberger album. Half of it has some pretty good pop tunes on it. I mean, weird ones, but still pretty good.
I already have it actually. I love the Furnaces I just think that was pretty weak and SO pretentious. Its not necessarily bad but the fact that no one is buying it is really funny to me.
-
I live close to the first tower location. I stopped shopping there years ago, but it will still be sad to see that big empty building.
-
And it's nasty for the people who worked there.
-
Comparing Dachau to Tower Records?? Now I've seen eveything.
It's a slimy big music store, true, but it's not the anti-christ. If I was desperate and needed a job, I would not turn down Tower Records. But I guess that's because I find it hard to feed myself with ethics and moral stances.
-
All they had left when I stopped by were piles and piles of ridiculously shitty rap CDs, at $0.25 each.
-
Tremendous blow for the guards when they closed Dachau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachau_concentration_camp).
Crying shame.
I don't think you can compare the two. If you however persist in that particular mania I hope that you'll get to experience the difference between the two firsthand.
And when you're there maybe you can say 'hi' to the members of my family who died in Dachau.
Cunt.
-
And now a visit from
THE VOICE OF REASON
One of the beautiful things about capitalism is that you do, in fact, have a choice as to where you get to your money. By the way, regarding the Dischord thing, if I buy a Dischord record from the locally-owned independent record shop in town, it's probably going to cost more. However that money goes towards the maintenance of the store. I understand the distinction between Tower Records and X-Ray Records but I would for certain like to keep my favourite distributors and record stores in business, even if it's just because I like the guy who runs X-Ray.
So guess what guys? The last word on the topic is "we live in free countries with free markets." Incidentally, I have been looking all over for that Brazilian post-punk comp, jcknbl.
-
What a piss poor prize. They could have at least given you one of those back-flipping dogs or something.
-
Whenever "Dachau" is mentioned, Captain Beefheart starts singing in my brain.
-
DACHAU BLUES
THOSE POOR JEWS
-
Somthing tells me I need to hear that song.
Also, jcknbl, can you rip and upload those noise rock and post-punk comps? They sound intersting.
-
ONE MAN MAD
SIX MILLION LOSE
Thank you, Kai. I was worried about having to justify that statement.
-
And when you're there maybe you can say 'hi' to the members of my family who died in Dachau.
Mentioning an event is not the same as condoning an event.
Also, congratulations on being the only person to have family killed by the Nazis. I guess I won the 'ski' on the end of my name at a raffle eh?
What he's saying is that it's a gross exageration that your comparing slightly over-pricing CDs to slaughtering innocent people. He never said you were condoning it, the comparison it's self is just frighteningly out of proportion enough as it is.
Take whatever "moral standpoint" you want, but please don't spout off nonsense to justify it.
In fact, maybe you werent thinking, just think on that comparison real quick and maybe you'll see where he's coming from.
-
Why the fuck did you even bring up the Holocaust? You know that's a powderkeg. Sheesh.
-
Whenever "Dachau" is mentioned, Captain Beefheart starts singing in my brain.
Me three.
-
The word is trivialize.
I'll upload "N?o Wave: Brazil Post-Punk 1982-1988" as soon as I get my computer back from the shop. Should be early next week. The one I'm on is old and lacking in software.
-
You made the comparison.
Read my post again.
Okay, check this out.: "Tremendous blow for the guards when they closed Dachau. Crying shame."
You're saying that the employees of Tower Record were like the guards at Dachau. There for Tower Records is like Dachau in your comparison. So you just compared people who were trying to make a living working for a store that slightly over-priced CDs to guards that worked at a concentration camp. Make sense?
-
Look guys I didn't put "THE VOICE OF REASON" in huge glowing letters because I felt they looked pretty*. This is an issue which simply has two sides to it, and by looking at one rather hyperbolic quote and getting all inflamed you're basically acting like every other forum on the Internet. Be reasonable with one another, come on.
*well, solely because I felt they looked pretty.
-
Hey, I'm really not that offended, I just thought it might be worth pointing out that comparing people to murderers without thinking it through is a pretty bad idea.
Hm, I wonder if the Tower Records is still open. I could probably buy that Atreyu CD they had a crapload of for next to nothing if they are. <---I know, I know, I'm sure everyone here hates them. But I think personally the CD would be worth getting if I can get it for a couple of dollars or less.
-
Yeah, uh huh, you're just playing mindgames now.
-
Quote me where I compared Dachau to Tower Records, son.
He already did that, shall I do it again?
Don't worry Cutman, this is just Tommys standard arguing tactic. I'm glad to see you aren't getting sucked in to it. I notice he's already started patronising you. This really is an acceleration for him.
-
Quote me where I compared Dachau to Tower Records, son.
Seriously, I don't see why you'd make that comparison. It's quite odd. If I give you a length of rope and you decide to hang yourself with it, I'm not eligible to face accusations of murder.
You made the comparison when you posted your original comment in a thread about Tower records going bankrupt.
-
I think one of the previous posters was right when he asked you why you bring up the Holocaust when you know it's not ging to come across all that well, ever. If you do bring it up you are bound to get a reaction and when you utter those words you are responsible for that reaction, even if you consider it an unreasonable response to a faulty interpretation of your words.
Many people read your post as I did. The mature thing to do would be to acknowledge that this is apparently something that can be understood from your words and offer a nice and polite 'sorry' for the offence that you caused. Then we can all move on.
It's okay to be wrong sometimes. We all have some nice growing-up to do, me as much as you. Calling you a cunt was rude. It was an emotional response and those are rarely the best responses. Sorry, for that. I do however feel that your words were highly offensive and should be less the cause of you explaining what you meant but should lead to you accepting and ackowledging that you were wrong.
-
I see your points.
I disagree with them.
I should think it is best never to bring up those things that stir up violent emotions in a conversation where they do not have a place. I never go around birthday parties telling everyone that I think Christianity is for suckers. That would be stupid, pointless and ultimately I would be responsible for every reaction I get. Thus I think that if you make any sort of hint at mass-murder in a discussion about a record-store you know that your comment is out of context and you know you are going to invoke some pretty hefty emotions. And, in my mind, you are then responsible for every reaction you get and every emotion you create. You knew it was going to be trouble yet you pressed on. Discussions about the exact nature of the comparison (or not-comparison) are then not important anymore.
'You reap what you sow' is a boring cliche. But things only get to be a cliche when they are true.
One other point: maybe I need 'the blindingly obvious reassurance' to be able to wrap my mind around the realities of the holocaust.
-
People, reading through the whole thread it seems apparent to me that tommy's intention was to say that Tower Records is a bad place, and that Dachau was also a bad place (to use a grotesque understatement, on my part). He was not saying that Tower Records is as bad as Dachau. His argument was along the lines of "Red is a colour. Blue is also a colour." Instead, most people have evidently read tommy's comment as analogous to "Red is blue."
However, tommy, you should be aware that the Holocaust is a uniquely inflammatory topic. This, combined with the flippant tone of your post, was always going to spell trouble. You're an intelligent person, and you should have thought twice in this instance: with a bit of effort, you could have formulated a less upsetting way to frame your argument.
-
I can see exactly where you are coming from, Tommy. I see it now that you have explained what you meant, your example may have not been the best ever but it gets the point across.
Moley, I'm going to respond to you because I like you.

Now, if only Gryff was here so we could listen to him....
Hi guys. I don't really know anything about Tower Records. I do, however, admire those who will stick to their ideals even in the face of really really cheap CDs.
-
I am not taking sides here, but what I see is a lot of arguing instead of civil discussion. Which is why I'm locking this thread. If anyone has a problem with this lock, PM me and I'll explain it in more detail. Suffice it to say that arguments of this nature have no place on the boards and are salutary* to none.
* Vocab word!
