I work a couple of kiosks at my local mall, and the one I spend the most time at has two TVs that play this stupid promotional dvd of the offbrand "Heelies" crap we sell. There is always this really poor techno playing in the background, and 11 hours of that every day for the rest of Christmas break is going to kill me. I've talked to the other guys working the booth, and we can play different music, as long as it's techno and not noticably obscene (mall rules.)
I need some quick suggestions for some stuff to get off itunes tonight so I'll have a mix we can use tomorrow.
It'd be best if it had plenty of bass, and not too much in the way of vocals. A DJ popping in every once in awhile is fine, but Ben Gibbard whining for the majority of the song is not what I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance to anyone with suggestions.

Haha, I got the Mortal Kombat theme from a friend.
Now I know where it came from. Thanks for the tip Tommy, their stuff should be great.

The Invincible Spirit - Push
This is all you need
Warning: its not what you need at all, but its a fucking great track.

MSTRKRFT is kind of heavy on vocals but they're also processed through a vocoder so it sounds like a computer. Therefore the vocals don't count. Shout Out Out Out Out and Daft Punk should also be decent. Benny Bennassi or however you spell his name is kind of awful but it's highly polished and people respond to it. Ellen Allien & Apparat's Orchestra of Bubbles has its moments but might be a little arty for knockoff-Wheelies.

Boards of Canada
Aphex Twin
Autechre
Analords

The next cockwit to refer to generic cheesy dance music as "techno" is going to get snapped.
Guys, come on. You don't have to like electronic music in all (or indeed any) of its varied flavours, but you can at least accord it the respect of not lumping it under a single genre name.
Techno is a particularly established and respected subgenre of electronic music. Calling Slinkee Minx or DJ Sammy "techno" is like calling Britney Spears "grunge" - a complete fucking insult.
-
Swedish Style Techno - Patrik Skoog, Adam Beyer and the rest of Drumcode. Or, well, Drumcode are pricks. But that's good music, barely listenable in a mall, maybe, but still.
-
Hospital Records specialise in kinda jazzy drum and bass. Maybe not what you're looking for, but it fits the "lots of bass" checkbox, and is kinda upbeat and cheery -- i.e. it wouldn't piss off your mall-boss overlord like an Aphex Twin record or whatever. They have a buch of mixers/compilations/samplers (the "Plastic Surgery" series is pretty good). There are often vocals, but they're usually pretty sparse / rare. Omni Trio (a producer, not a label), would also fit pretty well into this category, but may be too jazzy for your needs..
Daft Punk would also be pretty bangin', and there's a decent chance you might have one of their albums already.
Despite having written off Aphex Twin in the last paragraph, I also second E. Spaceman's reccomendation of the Analord series. Trouble is they're all on vinyl, but I think Aphex Twin put out a best-of CD ("Chosen Lords", I think it was called). Cool retro-sounding acid / minimal stuff, although some of it is probably a bit abstract for the mall. In that vein: DMX Krew (nb: not DMX!!!) and Luke Vibert's YospeH album are also good choices.
My Austrian housemate listens to nothing but minimal techno, she'd have some better recommendations than me here.
-
I say that playing my reccomendations at a mall is worth losing your job. Especially play some of the Autechre, the period where they sounded like ball bearings on a blender.
-
Hmm...all I know is some EBM-type stuff, some stuff that's been mentioned, some new-agey stuff that would probably suck, and The Blue Man Group.
-
The Chemical Brother's Come With Us album.
-
Actually, get Music For Airports by Brian Eno, it is probably one of my favourite albums of all time.
-
E., I think your Music To Get Fired To is missing Squarepusher.

i dunno if 20-minute pieces of generative music is going to get stock flying off the shelves. Classic album, though.
Venetian Snares' "Shitfuckers!!!" album is pretty good getting-fired techno.
-
I'mn assuming you don't actually mean techno- just any kind of electronic dance music?
Portishead
Vitalic
and most of what people have already said
-
Venetian Snares' "Shitfuckers!!!" album is pretty good getting-fired techno.
It's no Winnipeg Is A Frozen Shithole but it'll do.
-
True. It is the noisiest, most abrasive record of his I have in my possession, though.

E., I think your Music To Get Fired To is missing Squarepusher.
I don't actually like Squarepusher, but I was issing Lords of Acid.

Man With No Name
Infected Mushroom
Pendulum
This is goa-trance and psytrance. This is good shit.
It's better for tripping balls than for shopping malls, but I think you should be pleased.
-
Actually, Pendulum is drum 'n bass, and one of the most widely-recognised artists in the scene at the moment. Whether this is good or bad depends on who you talk to.
I personally enjoy Pendulum - I've heard them described as "d'n'b arena rock", which seems like a pretty accurate description.
Psytrance is probably not a good idea for a shopping mall.
-
Yea, Pendullum and the Chemical Brothers are not Techno. THey are Drum'n'bass/breakbeat.
-
I'm much more sincere about Man With No Name and Infected Mushroom than Pendulum. Pendulum was more of an afterthought. Groovy stuff though... drum and bass? I completely disagree. There are synth leads all over the Pendulum I've heard.
-
Are we talking about the same Pendulum? There's been two groups in recent years - the first was from Melbourne, well known for an album called 3 Knocks (in particular the song Coma), but they're no longer around. I'm referring to the more recent, a DnB trio out of Perth who took the world by storm in the last couple of years.
Synth lines, yep, sure. In particular, some of the tracks Pendulum have released along with the Freestylers (breaks crew out of the UK) such as Fasten Your Seatbelts and Painkiller are absolutely synth-laden. This doesn't stop it being drum n bass though (albeit very wobbly DnB)! If you want to hear more "obvious" DnB tracks, listen to (for example) Sounds Of Life and Another Planet.
Also, I'm not sure what the hell the Chemical Brothers are. Their tracks run the gamut from almost-but-not-quite-trance through almost-but-not-quite-DnB with a side trip to almost-but-not-quite rock. Fun to listen to though.

Is calling Britney Spears Grunge an insult to grunge or an insult to Britney?
I'll go sit in the corner now.
-
It's an insult to both. Stay in your corner, and if you get hungry, I may throw you a cracker.
But I think we are talking about the same Pendulum. I'll have to ask the resident techno-phile when she wakes up.

Earth Moving The Sun is one of the few psytrance CDs I own which sounds just as good when you're sober.
The 'Other Side' from Converting Vegetarians by Infected Mushroom works here too.
Also Polygon Window, Kit Clayton, Cex. And 'Befriend A Childkiller' by Venetian Snares.

Can't see shit captain.

I can't get enough of any remix of "City Of The Future" by Infected Mushroom. Usually I can figure out what's going on with harmonies, but they're doing some crazy shit with that song.
