I need to rant about all the local bands in my area, now i have one (three) complaints, one freaking complaint... they all sound the frickin' same, well the popular ones atleast.
It seems that the whole world has the same problem, all the crappy bands are popular and are advertised EVERYWHERE while the good ones are left in a dark conrer to cry to themselves. For one, i was watching 120 minutes one night (MTV show for "indie" music i'm sure you've probably heard of it) and a band comes on, it's just an acoustic songs pretty basic pretty boring and i thought, why is this alternative? Is the music industy so narrow minded that any music that doesn't sound like the kooks or razorlight doesn't belong on normal MTV viewing...same with the next song nothing incredibly SHOCKING or anything ALTERNATIVE just a sort of grungy rock song..why do these bands belong on 120 minutes, does MTV decide what they think is alternative and shove it to one side because they dislike it.
Locally, just recently a band started that happened to know a guy from another "bigger" band and now they're bigger than my own band and our fellow friendly bands, we've (http://www.myspace.com/joemanhateruk) been practicing every damn week for 2 freakin' years just to have some crap usless band that think they're alternative to come along and steal all the fans away without even a hint of originallity or stage presense.
Alright i'm done GOD...i'm gunna go beat up The Backup (http://www.myspace.com/thebackupmusic) now... thankyou for your time...

answers!
1). I do want music to be my job but not my band i'm studying music technology and my band is a hobby and i enjoy it very much.
2). I think about MTV..now and then..maybe watch 120 minutes..but...yeah *sulks*
3).The real point is, they're taking away our fun and fans! They get the suppoert gigs now instead of us they get the friends the fun when they just sucks balls, but i really think their popularity will blow over, but generally their attitudes to music like "it's easy" pisses me off, just because they know a few people and have the ability to play crappy covers by bands that start with "the" means becoming popular through music easy. OH SNAP their band name starts with "the". OH SNAP again, so does the most popular band in the area. OH SNAP, so does this years derbyshire band of the year!
I like to rant...and not make much sense...
-
haha wise
words pictures indeed, i'm enlightened thankyou ;D
Also watching green wing soothed my ranting urges..

Yeah man, I have watched local bands come out of nowhere, drum up hype, get radio play on Triple J, and Nova, and just disappear a year later. It is not a big deal. If you have a few bands that all know each other and like each others stuff, with fans that crossover between bands, you basically have a nice little scene that can get bigger, and is a lot of fun to play gigs in.
I mean, if you enjoy music, at some point you are going to have to deal with the fact that terrible bands are going to be somewhat successful. All you can do is play that music you love and hope people get it.
-
since when do nova play local bands...???
now when i read the title i thought this was going to be a rant about your favorite local bands which nobody else has ever heard of but since it's not i have no idea what else to type now except if you don't like a band ignore them if enough people ignore them with you they'll go away
-
That band on that myspace you linked are absolutely TERRIBLE. They sound like every local band in my area that I've had the misfortune of seeing.
There is absolutely NOTHING redeeming about that song at all.
Did they REALLY think to themselves while playing those first few bars 'Yeah, this is good stuff!'? Even compared to the bands they're trying to be, it's still HORRIBLE.
They have no talent whatsoever, the song was bad enough, but it was made worse by the fact that they didn't seem to know how to play it. Their own song.
The question I'd ask myself is 'Do I really want my fans to be the same people who enjoy this crap?'.
The thing about your local scene is that YOU are a part of it, whether you're making music or not. There's more to your local music scene than the bands, if you don't like it, fix it. Maybe start a label, or make cool flyers for shows, start an interesting band that's a little different (not crap) and hope that others follow by trying to do their own thing. Try to encourage bands you know to develop actual personalities of their own.
Go to shows and heckle crap bands until they break up. No, I'm serious.
Spread horrible rumours about them, and make a really cool graphic for the band that you do like. Promote the good bands all over, ask your local indepedent to stock some of your local favourite acts. Just make sure everybody knows that the crap bands are crap.
It would be amazing if you guys would add more ideas to this. 'How to discredit a band that you don't like'.
-
I'm trying to think of a delicate way to put this...
but I can't. So, I'll just post this, and hope everyone knows what I mean.
-
Go to shows and heckle crap bands until they break up. No, I'm serious.
Alternatively, make a direct point of not attending their shows at all. When people ask you why not, say "Because they play bad music and because they're just trying to hop on a bandwagon." If your band has an audience that recognizes you they will notice your absence.
-
The best way to protest something is to not give it your dollar.
Usually people's shows cost money. Even if it is to heckle.
-
You guys aren't doing this right.
Spread a rumour that they're inspired by coldplay.
Or
Stand outside their shows wearing their band shirts and hand out roadkill.
-
Oh man, Fabio, I feel for you. Believe or not, there is an even shittier band than The Backup who plays in our area called Tiberius (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=114642563) who commands some attention from the drunken frat boys in my town. Really, it's quite pathetic. Check them out, you'll see what I mean.
Oh well, at least I can take solace in that I'm easily a better drummer than the drummers from both of those bands.
-
Paste hardcore pornography onto all their gear and instruments.
-
Offer to design a poster for them, then simply photocopy the show information over some Japanese guro* anime.
Start selling "official band merchandise" covered in itching powder or carcinogens.
*basically snuff porn but illustrated
-
Put signs outside all their gigs saying 'Gay Meet-Ups Night'. Advertise this in the weeks preceeding.
-
Offer to make them burgers and secretly put an eighth of shrooms on each one. If all goes well, they'll be having the worst time of their lives in under an hour. Proceed to defecate on the ones that are lying down. Take pictures, hijack their myspace, switch these with their band pics, and change the password.
-
Hack their website and make all their links redirect to various shock sites.
-
Make CDs that physically bear a resemblence to theirs, burnt with the most unlistenable gore metal you can find
-
You know how a jewel case opens up and you take the CD out and sometimes there's an image behind it? Bribe the printer to put Goatse in behind the CDs.
-
Guys, they don't ALL need to be in bold. Especially that last one.
I'm gonna throw in a quickie and an obvious one. Act like a dick while wearing their t-shirt. Spill people's drinks while drunkenly singing along.
-
Presuming you can get into a gig of theirs for free, while wearing their shirt as above, make a mess at the bar, act disgracefully and call the bar staff ugly moles or wankers.
-
Guys, they don't ALL need to be in bold. Especially that last one.
Hey fuck you man.
Anyways I realized that a better idea would be to not put Goatse there but instead obtain copies of the band member's signatures and have them copied into an image that offers the CD buyer the price of the CD back.
-
Stand outside their shows wearing their band shirts and hand out roadkill.
Paste hardcore pornography onto all their gear and instruments.
Stand at the door of their gigs and ask punters for their email for the band's 'Mailing List' and then sign every address you receive up for the most eye-wateringly intense gay pornography ever created by man or beast.
Offer to design a poster for them, then simply photocopy the show information over some Japanese guro anime.
Hack their website and make all their links redirect to various shock sites.
Make CDs that physically bear a resemblence to theirs, burnt with the most unlistenable gore metal you can find
You know how a jewel case opens up and you take the CD out and sometimes there's an image behind it? Bribe the printer to put Goatse in behind the CDs.
All these measures would make me like a band more.

Yes, but Khar, haven't we already agreed that what you like is almost the exact opposite of what every other single person in Britain likes?
-
Hey, I play shitty post-grunge... I know how shitty I am, but I like playing it and people are stupid enough to listen. Don't be a snob and take away my fun! :(
-
Yes, but Khar, haven't we already agreed that what you like is almost the exact opposite of what every other single person in Britain likes?
I like University Challenge and The Archers.
-
KharBevNor, now listen to them. (http://www.myspace.com/thebackupmusic)
And if you want a comparison to my band (http://www.myspace.com/joemanhateruk), there you go and we ARE alternative, make sure to listen to the end of i know i know ACORDIAN WOO!
But sometimes, they know we hate them with a fierce passion, so we managed to piss them off by making our way to the front of the crowd and dancing stupidly at the front and starting like a dance pit...by pretending to have fun we're insulting them to the highest degree...
-
Hide razors on their instruments.
-
FINE BUT SMEARING POO ON THEM WOULD BE FUNNIER
-
MY DADDY DRIVE A PORSCHE
-
MY DAD IS BIGGER THAN YOUR DAD, HE'S GOT EIGHT CARS AND A HOUSE IN IRELAND
UH, SING IT.
-
Spread a rumour that they're inspired by coldplay.
They actually site Coldplay as an influence on their myspace, along with The Arctic Monkeys and The Killers. The music is in fact as bland as can be.
Fabio, your band is pretty fun, although not quite my music. Sounds like Sonic Youth, as opposed to sounding like an attempt to mimic Sonic Youth.
-
Der Golem, I hate your posts. They make me stare at your avatar for hours on end. :(
-
I love his posts, i get to stare at his avitar and his compliments are quite uplifting :3
EDIT: ah flaming osterich, the thing is the drummer from the backup is actually really good but when he's playing in this band he just seems shit i feel better than him, i've been playing drums for a year and a bit, i feel i'm quite good, but that's a matter of opinion, it's like the backup are pulling his drumming down 0_o
-
Sometimes my job makes me miss the Archers so I catch up in the evenings on the BBC Radio 4 website.
Can I get an agreement that Newspapers should be issued with a blanket ban on publishing photos of the actors who play Archers characters? Especially all dressed up? The damn Guardian published this picture of Adam and Ian when they got married and they just looked completely wrong and I was like NO you have destroyed everyones favourite virtual gay farmer/chef coupling.
-
It could be worse man, my hometown's music scene consists almost entirley of Matchbook Romance(who actually used to be one of these terrible local Poughkeepsie, NY bands) or Underoath rip offs.
-
I might just track down and kill the key member from each of the bands...also i dislike it when one person writes all the songs and the rest of the band just play them..
-
Fabio, your band needs a girl singing your songs. Really. Seriously.
I think I might really like your band if you had a girl singing your songs.
-
One time I used the "male to female" thing in GarageBand to hear what I'd sound like if I were a computerized girl. I felt kind of weird afterwards.
-
Did you awkwardly hit on yourself?
-
Frankly I disliked both bands.
I still don't see what the complaint is. If your fans jumped ship for a band that you think sucks, then based on the situation they must have been lame fans that you did not want around.
Shitty bands get popular, poor actors get famous, bad art gets recognized, and Broadway musicals are still made. Let's all take a second to cry about it.
-
Did you awkwardly hit on yourself?
I had to turn myself down. In the end, it just wouldn't have worked out between me.
-
This is hurting my head.
-
Johnny, if you were a girl... I would
-

ASturge is the singer and i dunno i wouldn't mind but it's an interesting thought.
-
wait, JC wasn't always a man? What?
-
With the power of GarageBand I made my voice sound like a woman's. It was like living in the Uncanny Valley.
-
Guys! Did you hear that?! JC had a trans-gender operation in a garage!
-
Fabio, your band needs a girl singing your songs. Really. Seriously.

seconded.
-
Girl drummers ftw.
-
Hell, JC will be your singer AND drummer! What a girl!
I want to marry a girl like JC.
-
Girl drummers ftw.
Girl drummers are so hot...autolux, hmmmm
-
yup, the blackup sucks ass, definitely. this is what a real local band should sound like: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=118793956

You'll make some trans-gendered individual a very lucky person someday, Darryl.

the way that I get around always having to support crap bands (metal and emo is popular where i am) is I put on a gig myself, scrounge a PA off someone (i got my basssist to help out most sundays doin sound at a local church, so we borrow their PA for free), get a mate who does Art A- Level to design flyers, go into a pub and ask them to let you put it on, put on other bands supporting you, taht aren't neccisarily good but you know will bring a crowd TRY TO MAKE IT FREE ENTRY and there you have it, you're headlining a gig and making a name for yourself as a local promoter.
Don't try to change your local scene, start a new one.
Hope this helps.
