Title: Favorite Guitars
Post by: wirehead on 10 Jan 2007, 00:33
Jeph,

Since you mentioned your fav guitar in the News today ("... telecaster-style Cobra with a solid rosewood neck hlgblugblhlgbh." Tuesday, January 9th, 2007).
Thought I'd mention mine. Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty with two sets of switchable pickups -- Fenders near the neck and Humbuckers near the bridge.  <drool>  Anyone know whose guitar this was and on what album they played it to perfection?

Cheers.
- Jimbo

Ahaha, don't even get me started here. From what I can pull from the top of my head, the guitar you're thinking of is a Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite. I don't believe Gibson ever made stock LP Customs with Fender-style single coil pickups.

Classics:
1972 Fender Telecaster Deluxe
1954 Gibson Les Paul Custom (two P-90s)
1958 Gibson Les Paul plain top
1961 Gretsch Duo Jet
1962 Fender Jazzmaster, foam green, matching headstock
1957 Gibson Les Paul Junior (TV Yellow)
1956 Gretsch Jet Firebird
1969 Fender Telecaster Thinline
1957 Gibson Les Paul goldtop
1953 Harmony Stratotone H-44
Johnny Ramone's modded Mosrite Mark II
1965 Gibson Firebird I
Brian May's Red Special
1964 Electro ES-17

The last decade or so:
Fender Telesonic
Fender American Vintage '62 Jazzmaster
ESP EC-400 archtop
Ibanez AR-300
Gibson Firebird Studio
Gretsch Malcom Young II
Eastwood Airline 2P Deluxe
Fender 1972 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue

No, not The Knack.  (Nice cover, though).
And you're right, valley_parade, it wasn't "stock."

Post by: Thrillho on 10 Jan 2007, 02:56
I adore most Telecasters - that are Fender or Squier made, I hate the copies because they warp the shape; even the headstock is part of it to me - excluding pretty much just Thinlines. I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

However, the holy grail for me would be an Esquire. THAT would be sweet.

Fender came out with a new Esquire at 2005's NAMM. You can find them online for about US$620-650 brand new.

Well I sure as hell don't, so I guess once I can I'll just get an old school one. And then I'll crank it up to within an inch of its life and play lead lines so razor-sharp it'll make your ears bleed.

I am quite partial to my Takamine acoustic.  They make nice guitars!

However, I think if I could only pick three I'd really like:

http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElectric/Gibson%20Electric%20Guitars/LesPaul/ <- Gibson Les Paul (I'll take any of 'em)

and my personal coup de grace:

The Drifter

[quote="Sonic Youth gear archive]

NOTES:

# The Drifter was in Sonic Youth's arsenal for nearly 20 years. Originally a cheap 6-string, in the mid-80s the frets were torn out and the guitar was strung up with bass strings and used exclusively by Thurston on Eric's Trip up until July 4th, 1999, when the guitar was stolen in California.
# Gauges: .056 .056 x x .042 .042
# Black Les Paul style body
# Originally played as a 6-string, typically with a cowbell for "She's in a Bad Mood" (see "SONIC DEATH" liners) or drumsticks for "Burning Spear".
# All frets removed in mid-80s
# Strung up with 4 bass strings in mid-80s
# 2 E tuners removed
# 2 drumsticks used for "Eric's Trip" typically wedged under strings
# "SONIC" sticker on headstock
# Sticker w/ Elvis on a U.S.A. flag
# Dayglo Tiger sticker (?), similar to Kimberly guitar
# Confusion is Sex sticker
# Large white square sticker, unsure of details
# Silver single coil pick-ups taped in
# All knobs taped over with duct tape

Well, the player I was looking for was... (Aw surely your guessed it?)  Jeff Beck.  I first heard his album "Blow by Blow" in 1975 and wore out the grooves on it.  Absolutely amazing to listen to his phrasing work on "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" with that guitar.

I'm on to you.

Page's Black Beauty had 3 Gibson double-coil pickups and was stolen shortly after their January 9, 1970 concert at Royal Albert Hall, if I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure it was stolen on that tour, in any case.

I have plenty of guitars left on my list:

- Gibson SG Standard in cherry red
- Fender 1962 reissue Jaguar in ocean turquoise (getting her this summer, if all goes according to plans)
- Gibson EDS-1275 in cherry red. Nothing like a 12-string electric, they sound amazing (see "Under The Hedge" by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists)
- Fender American Telecaster (Alan Jackson's guitarist is awesome)
- Fender American Stratocaster (Dire Straits self-titled album. 'Nuff said)
- Takamine 12-string acoustic

I would also like to hotrod my '02 Johnson Shitocaster by putting some actual Fender parts in her.

also, if anyone has ever seen FLCL, (and i know its just a cartoon but...) the main character naota has a pretty sick guitar at the end of the show, right when he turns into atomsk.  I forget what they called it and don't have time to look it up.  but i am sure somebody knows.

Does he know how to use a bass? I submit that if I needed that many strings for my guitar then I wouldn't be doing it right.

Yeah, extended-range basses tend to move out of the bass range.
But he pretty much does alot of tapping,
Search youtube for "jean baudin" or "11 string mario" and you'll see it.

His myspace page has some nice music too. He gets almost piano like tones.

Dag nabbit, I missed it, what did this presumably offensive signature consist of?

It wasn't offensive, we just don't have sig pictures here.

Oh, and I like the Fender Cyclone, but every one I've played they can't hold tuning. I know wammy bars sent you out of tune, but Cyclones do it the worst I've ever heard.

He's a tapper. There's a video of him playing the Mario theme on an 11 string bass.

Also, for me, nothing beats the Jazz Bass. Simple, comfortable, great sound.

I've got a love-hate relationship with my guitar. It's a 70s era Epiphone Genesis, which is basically just a cheap Les Paul knockoff with pickup switching and two cutaways. It's sweet, but I got it used, and the previous owner wore out the hardware like you wouldn't believe. Now the strings go out of tune almost immediately after I tune them, or at least shortly after I start playing.  :?

But even so, I like it.

PRS's are the shiz.

If I ever open up a shop, I'm going to buy parts from Warmoth and make a few guitars in the style of Tony Iommi's Gibson custom shop SG (wine red). It's one of the best looking SGs I think I've ever seen.

Title: Re: Favorite Guitars
Post by: Thrillho on 19 Jan 2007, 21:15
I didn't string it the way they did. It's tuned DADADx. I use it to make dissonant noises and feedback, by hitting and strumming. The frets are redundant of course, but I basically have two guitars in one because the drum stick acts as an artificial bridge, so the strings above and below make different noises. So no strumming per se, occasionally one strum of the strings or moving a slide or something up and down it, but it's mostly feedback and hitting the strings with a drumstick.

that bottom one there, looks like it could be pat metheny's pikasso guitar.

its a harp guitar,

so while you can play the main guitar neck normally, the rest acts as a harp.

they are tuned to different scales. so that you can strum and have a chord play or whatever.

I have to say my absolute favorite electric guitars are Fender telecasters. I bought a mexican, wine red tele last May and wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING. I've borrowed some electric guitars to perform priced well into four digits that I wouldn't switch it for. That thick sound with the pickups, the neck, and even the color are absolutely perfect.

Runner up though is the Gibson ES-335. I love that tone. Although, I would almost as quickly buy an Epiphone version, as the high end of Epiphone ES copies are extremely similar and a better value. The price jump to Gibson really hasn't shown me that much of an advantage, especially for poor, student-art-rocker that I am. While the sound and neck are a bit better, it's not worth the money-jump if you ask me.

Bass is definitely the four-string Fender jazz bass. In black. It has a nice thick tone, and the neck is brilliant. Although my bass teacher recently turned me on to Lakeland basses, which I've played on a few times to great success, but I'll still go back to Fender. With bass, I've really found that once you reach a certain point in rock music, it's more about what kind of amp setup you're rockin'. Peavy and Hartke have treated me extremely well.

Acoustic guitars is where I like to go the expensive route. Any Martin or Taylor guitar that plugs in is great by me. Given unlimited funds, I'd rock the most expensive Taylor available with electronic setup.

A friend of mine brought in a Les Paul to school, and it looks small to me. Are all Les Pauls on the small side?Or was it just an illusion of    brain chemicals?

Les Pauls have really small bodies, but they are heavy as all hell. With that weight and the wide neck, they feel kind of bulky when you're first playing them, interestingly enough. At least that's what I've found.

I am no doubt in wholehearted support of the ES-335 fans in this thread. My mate's dad has one from somewhere around the mid-70s (bought her new) and has kept her absolutely stock. She sounds absolutely perfect in any setting. She's especially good for playing Ted Leo, since he played a Gibson with a dual-humbucker setup and used that lovely pickup blending. Hell, I think he even used a 335, I'll have to go back and look at the YouTube videos of him live.

In any case, someday I will have myself a 335 and it will be a goddamn gem and I'll never trade her for anything.

Most pictures I've seen of Ted are with an Epiphone Sheraton, although he does also bust out the 335.

I'm getting the new Gibson Melody Maker soon. Vintageeeeey. Also only $350. So depending on prices, I might also get a Fender Champion 600 amp, or an Epi Valve Junior head/cab.

I'm planning on purchasing an Epiphone Casino soon, and I was wondering if anyone else thinks this is a good decision.  I haven't gotten a chance to play one as such, but I played an Epiphone Les Paul in the same price range, and so I figure playability and craftsmanship-wise, both axes would be at about the same level.

And also had the knobs replaced with the knurled metal ones?

Something along the lines of what the jaco relic bass was modeled after?

Yeah. I Just used a stock 62 Jazz. My bad. But that IS the same guitar. Just a different color.

Jaco played 2 basses. A 1960 Fender Jazz Bass with frets, and a 1962 Fender Jazz Bass with the frets removed, and the neck epoxied.

This made the neck smooth, and kept the Rotosound strings from eating the neck.

Of course.  I play the guitar, and I took lessons for several years, and got to where I was, if I do say so myself, really pretty mediocre.  Only two things are keeping me from being a great guitar player:  a complete lack of talent and a complete lack of ability.  Other than those two things, though...

A 1960 Fender Jazz Bass with frets

He replaced the original neck on that bass to a 60's Precision bass neck. So it would be harder to practice on.
He also said that he uses the fretless for recording and shows only, becuae the strings eat up the neck.

Flat Wound strings are the best. I dont think I'll go back to regular strings for my Jazz bass. I love that sound.

Also, I'm looking into buying a fretless white 80's Japanese Jazz Bass for about US$800. It's well worth it, I'm just not sure if I have the money.

Burns guitars are awesome, they have that whole 70's Japanese vibe to them, with the reverse bodies, and warped bodies that avoid law suits, and cramming as many different bits of pickguard/switching and pickups on as possible.

Yeah, I want to get the darker one, but I only have a few 'outfits' or whatever that it would look good with, and they would look bad against my red sunburst fake Les Paul and my navy blue Squier Bullet. Blue clothing with red is a bad combination and blue clothing with blue makes the damn thing disappear.

I've always wanted one of the shirts that said "I am a rocker. I rock out." But I've just never gotten around to it.

My second favourite guitar would probably have to be a strat with overwound (Mmm, mid range) single coils all the way through. I can't stand these friggin' things with humbuckers in the bridge. Gotta be a rosewood fretboard, some sort of graphite/graph-tech nut, a high quality trem and some good tuning machines.

My favourite guitar will always and forever be the guitar I built:

Three piece mahogany body (it's GIGANTIC). I used three pieces so that I could set it up so that the pickups are in the centre of a board, rather than over a glue joint.
One piece mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard and jumbo frets. Kinda wish I had used smaller frets though.
Some sort of Grover tuners, I'm going to replace them with locking tuners some time in the next few months.
DiMarzio Breed(Neck) in... you guessed it, the neck position (sexiest sound EVAR)
DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge (also very sexy, but neck pickups FTW)
Wilkinson trem with locking saddles. Note, these don't lock the strings, just the saddles so your intonation will stay stable while changing strings.
Special 5-way pickup switch set so it can do coil splits in positions 2 and 4.
Expanded cutaway for playing on high frets. The Xplorer has always felt somewhat restrictive on the high frets.
I can send pictures of it if anyone wants to see it.

Of course I also want like a thousand billion other guitars. I'll end up like Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap, I'll have guitars that have never been played. Ever.

NICE. I'd also like to see photos of her.

I'm building a guitar with my dad. I needs teh munnees for all the different specialty parts *sigh* but here's basically how it's going to go:

The shape is of my own design, but very Fender-esque with the offset body, and intended to accomodate a Mustang bridge and a Jaguar tailpiece. She's going to have two noiseless neck-position P-90s in both the neck and the bridge so I can have the heavier midrange that The Thrill mentioned with the Strat. Pickup switch is going to be a 3-position snap slider, and the knobs are going to be 2 sets of 2-knob 2-pot stacks. The top knob is going to be volume and the bottom is going to be tone. Jackplate is going to be a reversed Strat jackplate on the bottom of the body (reversed to reduce wear on the instrument cable when I loop it through my strap).

It is going to be epic.

And im not sure how to change the constraints in this crazy forum code.

Thats a guitar made by Scott French, I really like his work, and think the jackplate at the back is a great idea, how often when you play on stage do you face your amp? Never. So it makes sense it be at the back.
If placed correctly, it wont stab into you when you play sitting down, and with your offset body, that shouldn't be a problem.

That is indeed a cool jackplate design. Just by looking at it though, I don't know how comfortable it'd be... it looks like the cable would be kindof poking at you if the hardened bit of the cable is long enough. I use Planet Waves cables and the hardened bit sticks out quite a ways. I think I may even end up putting a Strat jackplate the normal way on the side of the guitar to where it comes out of the plate with the cable pointing up so that I really have no choice but to loop it through my strap.

My favorite guitar is my acoustic bass guitar.  Its a fretted four string by la bella.  They make mostly classical strings but also a very few basses.  It is beautiful and has amazing resonance.  It is kind of big though...

Are the $20 junior sized classical starter guitars that they hand you in primary school. So much fun to play. More fun to play than any other guitar I've ever played.

Oh man do I ever want one of those to install a pickup in.

This thread has gone on for far too long without mention of the Wangcaster. (http://www.carverdoug.com/wang.html)  Link posted instead of pictures, becausit's slightly NSFW.

"Masturbatory guitar solo" anyone?

Actually, with that body, it looks like it'd be an easy guitar to play. And a body made out of cherry wood... hell, I don't even know what to say.

I like how you're talking about the wood makeup of the guitar when it's a guitar shaped like a wang.

No offense or anything, I just thought it was kinda funny.

MOAR ABOUT THIS WANG-TAR PLZ

It won't work, nylon strings don't produce an electrical field when they vibrate over a pickup, and you'd have to completely remove and reposition the bridge (requiring a lot of dicking around and the construction of a special jig) to be able to use steel strings with any hope of having non-shit intonation. Sorry mate :B

What, one of those vibration-sensitive guys? Well, it depends on what kind of sounds JohnnyC wants to get out of that guitar.

You could dope the string in something that conducts and then run a current through them. It'd sound completely different but I'd like to hear it. Has anyone tried running a current (oscillating? the out from an oscillator or some other guitar maybe?) through their strings?

[edit]actually, guitar strings are coils aren't they? damn, solenoids give you parallel magnetic fields rather than circular ones surrounding the string.

DynamiteKid: is there some site somewhere that has a bunch of rambling and vague articles about getting drones or other not typical guitar noises out of a guitar?

Oh shit, guys, I have an emergency here. This is what happened:

So the housekeeper was mopping around an area that we've told her about 50 times not to do ANYTHING around, because it has all of my guitars in it. But she didn't fucking listen and decided to mop there anyway. She knocked my Squier Strat over into my '53 Kay acoustic and dropped the mop in the bucket, splashing water on the back of the acoustic. This water contained floor cleaner. The floor cleaner in the water has completely fucked up parts of the finish on the guitar.

Is there any way for me to fix this with the limited resources I have here in Albania, or am I going to have to take her to the States and have my dad take care of it?

I couldn't come up with a good girl's name for my guitar, so I just call it "23".
