Title: CYHSY: Sound of Thunder
Post by: Ben yayayayayayayay on 12 Jan 2007, 08:02
Though its official release is the 30th, it'll be downloadable from Insound on the 16th and will no doubt be coming to a torrent site near you. Set your faces to chewed off everyone, because CYHSY* will no doubt go Hannibal on our asses in 5 days. At least for me, cause I like that band yahmeen?

Anyone else excited for the thing I just typed?

*CYHSY is an "acronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym)" for CYHSYeah  :-o

Sir, the correct term is *clap* YEAH!.

*Yeah.

*(clap)...

Who are CYHSY?!?

Telling us it's an acronym and then only giving us the last word doesn't help much.

On an unrelated note: I am going to go see *clap* YEAH! In february.

I must admit:  In the spirit of being open-minded, and willing to try new things, I checked outthe songs that they have on Myspace to see what the hype and excitement was all about, as I had never before listened to this band.  Upon doing so, I did not clap my hands, nor did I say "yeah."  I clicked the little X at the top, right-hand corner of my browser, and said "I will have no more of that, thank you!"

Sorry guys, I tried - really, I did! - but I just cannot get into this band at all.  :-/

It's best to try not to get the clap.

I actually really enjoy their self titled album. I've not heard any of this new one yet, I'm sure I'll find it cool though.

I can really see why people wouldn't be into them though.

I'm going to say the important thing is that I gave them a fair shot, which is more than I would have done in the past.

Please stop using that acronym! I keep thinking you're talking about C.S.N.Y.!

Thats why I explained the acronym at the bottom!

But if you mean you clicked on the thread title thinking it was for Crosby, Stills, and Nash, I'm terribly sorry and your gift basket is on its way.

And though the correct pronunciation is *clap* YEAH!, you must write it out as CYHSY (CYHSYeah), as the C and the Y and the H and the S are silent. Like how the N is silent in the word KNIFE, so you actually pronounce it KIFE.
ex. And so, Mary Stuart Elizabeth Stuart Hitler, the ex-Marine/mariner/Marine-mariner told Frederick...Douglas "I WILL FLY MY KIFE

NOW"

Story time: first time my mom heard me listening to *clap*(your hands say)YEAH?, she yelled out "OMG BEN I DIDN'T KNOW YOU LIKED THE TALKING HEADS!"

Half-true story actually, she didn't type in caps lock when she said it. I embellished.

You know, I spent a good minute trying to puzzle out how CYHSY spelled Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Sometimes Young and how they were coming out with a new album and I'd not heard about it.

Then I read the topic.  Carry on.

Dan, is there some way you can set up a filter that changes "CYHSY" into "*clap* YEAH!"?

i guess i'm looking forward to this. the s/t was decent enough, or at least partially engaging. i listen to a song or two every once in a while and that's it. so i'll dl this new one and give it a whirl but i don't have high expectations.

Now, I've said this before, but it bears repeating. I really don't get the Talking Heads comparison. My confusion is mainly down to the singers: whatsisname from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sounds, to my ears, completely different from David Byrne. David Byrne is all paranoid and jittery and nervous, whereas whatsisname has your more couldn't-care-less, rock star disinterest thing going on. Also, my introduction to Talking Heads was through Remain in Light, so I guess I probably still associate them with that style of music more than any other . . .

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new album. I'm also looking forward to an Australian tour that WON'T BE CANCELLED AFTER I'VE ALREADY BOUGHT A DAMN TICKET.

I loved the first album, will most likely buy the second. I respect any band that self releases albums.

I also don't get the Talking Heads comparisons. The singer is more like the guy from the Violent Femmes with a dash of David Byrne than anything else I've heard.

The yelp in his voice is a little Spencer Krug/David Bowie, if you ask me.

Anyways, Some Loud Thunder will probably prove to be a really appropriate album name if it's produced by Dave Fridmann.

I love CYHSY... and they sound the same live as they do on the album, so if you get a chance, go see them. I totally didn't know they were coming out with another one... damnit.. so much music...

Yeah I really don't get the Talking Heads comparisons either. The point I was trying to make is that my mother, a person who had never even heard of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah before, let alone heard any comparisons to Byrne and Co., instantly thought of Talking Heads (she's a BIG Talking Heads fan btw). Maybe I'll ask her why she thinks they sound alike, but I'm also kinda lazy and this forum's not important enough to put her through all that hardship </3

The first album has become a modern classic, and even though 2006 was the You Year (btw, congrats all, on being Time Magazine's Person of the Year), CYHSY were the first band to become successful completely by internet hype, which is why their first album is a landmark. It will be interesting to see what the band comes out with now that people expect quality and success.

Interesting factoid: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sold more albums than Nirvana's Bleach before Nevermind was released. You know what that means: OMG WE'RE HAVING ANOTHER ROCK REVOLUTION CYHSY IS THE NEW NIRVANA OMG!!!!!!!1111111

Just listened to their new album about thrice in a row. Though it gets better after repeated listens, I still feel they've driven into disappointment city  :-(

This one's just not as fun as the debut, and with a name like that how the fuck can you not make fun music?

I've noticed that their music sort of matches their album covers: where the debut was fresh and full of life, the cover was colorful and showed motion (acrobats). The cover art for Some Loud Thunder is in different shades of gray and shows people standing around expressionless  :|

Maybe it's like the Star Wars trilogy. The first one, I mean. Episode IV was cowboy-samurai-starfighter fun. Episode V was a downer and a drag. Episode VI resolved it all with the help of Muppets. It'll all make sense by the next album.

I can't listen to this band. I love Talking Heads, but they sound NOTHING like the Talking Heads. Why do people even make that comparison? I think CYHSY has one of the worst singers ever and can't even listen to 5 seconds of them. Just something about the music really drains my life away.

Your first two sentences are right on the mark. Your third sentence has never met Jerry Jeff Walker.

CYHSY's vocalist is anything but "couldn't-care-less." In fact, he's even more over-the-top than Byrne. I'd say the only difference between the two is which octave they're yelping at.

Someone somewhere once wrote a one-line description of this band: "David Byrne joins every band you listen to."  They're okay but the lack of originality turned me off ever wanting to hear them.
Title: Re: CYHSY: Sound of Thunder
Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 01 Feb 2007, 12:46
lack of originality? why, because their lead singer has been compared to byrne? no offense but that's a pretty bad reason to not even give a band a chance. i am a little confused though. are you saying you've never heard them but don't want to b/c you've heard unoriginal things about them, or have you heard them and find them unoriginal and therefore don't want to hear them again?
Title: Re: CYHSY: Sound of Thunder
Post by: Jackie Blue on 01 Feb 2007, 13:05
No, I mean their music sounds unoriginal to me.  They're competent but nothing I want to seek out or listen to repeatedly.

I don't find their music particularly groundbreaking or original either, it's just catchy as fuck and makes me happy
Title: Re: CYHSY: Sound of Thunder
Post by: ScrambledGregs on 02 Feb 2007, 08:47
I hardly think the band or the singer sound like Talking Heads/David Byrne (I still maintain he's closer to the guy from Violent Femmes), but really, if you're going to rip off any band, would a Talking Heads rip off be so bad?? I mean think of all the other terrible bands on the radio who copy each other and older shitty bands.
Title: Re: CYHSY: Sound of Thunder
Post by: BillAdama on 02 Feb 2007, 09:05
I'm not really getting into the album so far.  The vocals sound a lot like other indie, but seem kind of muted behind the music, which clashes at bit with itself.  Either that was a bad creative decision, or somebody mixed it really badly.

Just because mixing the vocals way too quiet worked for Exile On Main St doesn't mean it's going to work for everything.
Title: Re: CYHSY: Sound of Thunder

In other words, the Steve Albini approach to mixing vocals.
