Title: The Wicker Man Remake
Post by: Johnny C on 17 Jan 2007, 00:11
Somebody patched together a hilarious montage of what are supposedly the best scenes of the Wicker Man remake (http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2007/01/best_parts_of_wicker_man.html). I felt I should share it with everyone. Was the movie really that bad?

It was worse. The Wicker Man remake fails not just as a remake of a highly original classic film, but it fails at being a film altogether.

File under "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot," right below 'if it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college."  Seriously, this is one of the stupidest things I think I have ever seen, but now I'm afraid if I don't actually watch the whole movie to try to make sense of what I just saw, my brain will asplode and end me.

Covered in beeees! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs-tl6GBOBo)

Haven't seen this remake but it seems like a ridiculous thing to even attempt (the original time and setting were surely key to it making any sense, plus I hear Cage's character isn't Christian) but even ignoring all of that these little clips just look astonishingly bad.  Woodward's character is not particularly likeable, but Cage looks like a complete fuckwit.

You'd better not let him hear you say that: he might punch you.

The point of Howie (Woodwards character in the original) is that, despite being obviously insensitive and unlikeable, he has a definite morality, which is what leads him to the Wicker Man. One of the questions the films masterfully thoughtful plot asks us is, is Howie's morality reprehensible? The ending asks us to reconsider the glee we feel earlier on when the islanders one-up Howie. It's a film which takes a hard relativist look at clashes of fundamental, opposing, illogical worldviews: the residents of Summerisle and their fictional (but masterfully researched) religion are as close to 'fundamentalist' paganism as you can get. The film masterfully depicts both the positive and negative sides of the islanders religion and makes them human, sympathetic characters. It's a very clever film.

The remake is literally Nicholas Cage running round a forest shouting and fighting bees and amish chicks for two hours then getting set on fire. That is as deep as you get.
