Now, the only stuff here I've heard of are The Pillows (Because of their soundtrack to FLCL.), The Boredoms (Whom I haven't heard and would like an opinion on.), and Boris, because I was interested as the album name, band name, and album cover all pointed to a Russian Rap group in my mind, which sounded hilarious to me at first. If that comes off as me stereotyping, then I'm sorry, my excuse is pure exhaustion. So, let's talk Japanese! Music of course.
-
Shonen Knife are Japanese, right?
-
I dunno, are they?
-
the only japanese bands i know are off anime sound tracks
like he said the pillows are awesome...for a song which may as well be titled "any excuse for a guitar solo" check out "adivce"
also myproof are one of the better metalcore bands i've heard *ducks*
-
Look up Morning Musume.
they have a lot of stuff on YouTube, but a lot of it isn't music, but everything else they do since they're fuckin' HUGE in Japan.
Look for "Jyosei Kashimashi Monogatari" on youtube for an example of how crazy some of their music is.
Apologies if that actually doesn't mean anything in Japanese, it's supposed to mean "noisy girls story"
Also, check out Miyavi, again on youtube.
-
I like the recommendations, thanks, but anything along the lines of Japanoise, I think it's called. And oculd someone give me a rundown of the Boredoms? Opinions on them are welcome.
-
I dunno what Japan-Rock is but listen to X Japan because they fucking shred.
-
Bleach.
-
Merzbow
-

This guy is on the right lines. Unfortunately a lot of the rest of Visual Kei bands are kind of sucky. Malice Mizer are pretty good though, and Dir En Grey have some pretty good songs.
-
Eastern Youth is pretty excellent. They're kind of like a Japanese Jawbox that started out as an Oi band (it's weird, I know).
I'm also seeing Polysics next Saturday. They tear shit up, Devo-style.
-
The Boredoms (Whom I haven't heard and would like an opinion on.)
The Boredoms is the best noise band I have heard. Theyre just f***ing nuts! Definitely worth checking out.
-

Awesome, but could I have a rundown of the Boredoms? i.e. What albums to get or where to start? Thanks.
-

This man speaks the truth. I can't get enough of Hydra and Dead Tree.
-
woah, no one's mentioned mono yet!
so...mono
and world's end girlfriend (not really rock...wierd electro-orchestral oddness)
often, it seems, mentioned by me: envy (possibly the only band with crazy screaming lyrics that i like)
-
The Mad Capsule Markets.
-
The Pillows is the band that did the theme song of FLCL, right? I like them, but I've only heard that one song from FLCL.
I like Boris, based on Pink, but it doesn't quite enthrall me enough to list them among my favorite bands.
-
Melt Banana and Ruins are both pretty good and insane in their own ways.
Also: Electric Eel Shock. Sex, drugs and e-mail!
-
Green Milk From the Planet Orange put on a somewhat entertaining show (for being an instrument rock group)
The Pillows are also lots of fun live. The band I'm in opened for them, and none of us but our bassest knew of them. They were great.
-
are gmftop good? they're playing in philly in a few weeks and i was thinking about going but remain undecided. tell me something to convince me to go.
-
The Pillows and the Boredoms have absolutely nothing in common aside from being Japanese.
The Boredoms are a noise-psychedelic-freakout band. I think their best album is Super AE. It is also their most accessible. If you like noisy psychedelic rock also check out Acid Mothers Temple and as mentioned Melt Banana and Afrirampo. All of those bands put on the best live shows you will ever see.
Ghost are also fantastic, and are not "noisy" like those above. They're still pretty psychedelic but more in a folk/70s rock way. Their album Hypnotic Underworld is excellent.
Guitar Wolf are an excellent punk band and have the claim of recording the loudest album of all time (Jet Generation). Unless you're really, really into them, the only album you need is the "greatest hits" compilation Golden Black.
Avoid Merzbow at all costs, unless you want to buy endless albums which all sound like changing the radio station (how many has he made now? Around 70?)
-
Wow, that was as helpful as it probably gets, thanks. Although I kinda knew the Boredoms and the Pillows were different in such ways. What about the Pillows for albums though? They have so many, where should I start? I'm like a puppy you found on the street, and if you leave me there you're killing all of the puppies. Fulfill my NEEDS.
-
I don't care for the Pillows, so I can't help you there. My ex-girlfriend says the FLCL soundtracks are the best things they did, though, FWIW.
-
Sigh
I'm glad someone mentioned Sigh because they are awesome I dunno if it was what the original poster was after but if you do want to check out some Japanese metal check out Gallhammer, first time I heard of them I thought it was a bit of a gimmick, but they actually sound really decent. The pictures say it all it's like Pure Hellhammer worship. The music is pretty decent sludgey bm, with a nice atmosphere too it.
(http://www.gallhammer.com/img/top.jpg)<---> (http://www.hellhammer.nl/index_bestanden/HELLHAMMER03.JPG)
It's uncanny like Tom G Warrior had a sex change or something
-
Envy are pretty noisy and also Japanese, I think!
I am going to see Dir en Grey at the Fine Line in Minneapolis on Valentine's Day. I am kind of excited. (And Malice Mizer's song Beast of Blood is really awesome and silly [but probably only silly to me])
-
BEAST! OF! BLOOD! *doodydoodydoodydoodydoodydoodydoody*
*ahem*
I didn't mention any Japanese metal because it seemed pretty clear that wasn't what the thread was about, but they do put out some veeeery good shit. Scytale, have you ever heard Abigail? Hghly awesome black/thrash silliness.
-
Acid Mothers Temple and Boris and their massive respective discographies could get me through weeks and weeks and I wouldn't mind having no other music.
-
Fuck yeah
Hail Yakuza!!!!
-

This man speaks the truth.
Also, Scytale, I do think Sigh are a pretty good band.

A good fan site with an excellent discography page. It has previews of the albums as well. :-D

are gmftop good? they're playing in philly in a few weeks and i was thinking about going but remain undecided. tell me something to convince me to go.
Honestly I couldnt, really. It was a couple years ago when I saw them and I didn't know much about them at the time, so I didn't remember too much about the show. All I could say is that I do not like much 'post-rock' type stuff at all, and I still managed to be pretty interested in them almost the whole time.
-

Yes! Finally someone mentions them. Wonderful band, though admittedly only because they're Japanese. If they were American they would suck.
-
I would throw out Asian Kung-Fu Generation, simply because they have the best music video ever made. Look up Kimi No Machi Made on youtube or something. Awesome.
I also enjoy Yuzu (for those of us who enjoy some nice accoustic now and then) and ORANGE RANGE. I can't back them up as good musically, but they sure are fun to listen to.
Stay away from GACKT. Ugh.
-
Two people already mentioned Envy, but I might as well make the trifecta. And do we seriously have no love for the 5,6,7,8's?
-
Yes! Finally someone mentions them. Wonderful band, though admittedly only because they're Japanese. If they were American they would suck.
I could not disagree with this statement more. In fact, I don't even really know what it means. Are you saying you only listen to Guitar Wolf because they're some kitschy Japanese thing? That's not why I listen to them. I listen to them because they've put out over 15 years worth of some of the most energetic, fun and downright noisy punk rock ever made.
If anything, they make pretty much any American or British "punk" band of the last 15 years look really lame and watered-down.
-
do we seriously have no love for the 5,6,7,8's?
oh yeh! i love 'em but they always slip my mind. and whenever i hear them i can't get vonage commercials out of my head. damn tvs partially ruining good music.
-
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant
I heard an album by them like three years ago* and forgot about it! Good stuff.
*holy shit
-
the pillows are awesome; the FLCL soundtracks took from their best albums (mid 90's stuff). They've been around for over 15 years; started out doing pop but eventually started doing rock.
Not rock, but I also like Cornelius. some call him the "Japanese Beck" but he brings a J-pop sensibility to his music (whatever that means). Too bad his newest album isn't available in the US :-( (The rest are on Matador.)
-
I've never really considered The 5.6.7.8's a "J-rock/pop" band though... aren't they on a Canadian label? I know they sing in English (hehe).
I can't understand any of Beast of Blood except that part... but to me it's "BEAST!!!! BWOOD!!!" That was from when Gackt was the vocalist, I think. He's so preeeeetty.
-
I've never really considered The 5.6.7.8's a "J-rock/pop" band though...
Almost none of the bands in this thread actually fit into the J-Rock genre, you're right. J-Rock means something more specific than "a band which makes music and comes from Japan". You've got the visual kei stuff (like Dir En Grey, Malice Mizer, stuff I don't really care for except that damn, those Dir En Grey [strike]ladies[/strike] dudes are pretty hot) and then the poppier, "indie" J-Rock like the Pillows, Shonen Knife, the 5, 6, 7, 8s, Cibo Mato, and then the "blow your head off drug-induced psych rock" which most people don't consider J-Rock, in large part because they have bigger fanbases outside of Japan than inside.
I've known several people from or in Japan who listen to Mogwai and had never heard of Mono. o_O
-

I actually didn't know who the 5-6-7-8s were when I first heard that Vonage commercial. So, I associate them with Kill Bill.
Now whenever I see a Vonage commercial, I just see people getting hack'd 'n slash'd by Uma Thurman, and it is good. :-P
-
Mucc, because according to someone in my japanese class if you listen to J-rock and live in sweden you're either really into dir en grey or mucc.
-
the only stuff i can throw out there is Dir En Gray and Balzac, mainly because my friend told me about them. never actaully heard them myself tho.
-
http://vampirefreaks.com/u/-BLOOD- (http://vampirefreaks.com/u/-BLOOD-)
I like this band's music
-
You'd almost certainly enjoy Malice Mizer.
Here's the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI7XPwl_d8o) to 'Beast of Blood', mentioned earlier.
-
I saw Polysics last night, and they completely rocked the house. If you haven't heard them before, the best way I can think of to describe them succinctly is DevoXcore.
-
Have Pizzicato Five been mentioned? I'm sure they have. They're awesome, and they're on Matador.
-
Oh yeah, Pizzicato 5, they're fun. Kind of like... I don't know what. Sixties space pop or something. I should listen to them again.
-

Dude you're thinking about this way too much. They're basically the Japanese Ramones with a little more edge to the sound. I guess kind of a Minor Threat/Ramones fusion or some shit. Either way, if they were American or European, they would pretty much eat it. I mean, they dress up in all leather and have been known to wear shirts that say "Punk" on them. Their music is fun, but not original. It is fun, though, I'm giving them that, and for that reason I will still enjoy them. And the fact that they're Japanese.
-
I saw a video clip last night of a Japanese jazz band called Soil & Pimp. They were insane! Seriously cray Alto Sax impov and a bitchin' rhythm section.
I would give handjobs to see them live.
-
I'm not saying Guitar Wolf is original, just very good. If they weren't Japanese they would be just as good. I'd much rather listen to them than the Ramones any day. I know the Ramones did it "first" but I think Guitar Wolf does it better.
-
You're preaching to the choir on that point. I think pretty much everyone did it better than The Ramones.
-
Glad I'm not the only one who considers the Ramones to be overrated. People talk about them like they were as important as the Velvet Underground or something, when really, they were just exceptionally competent. Various other bands before or during their time were better, but they get all the attention.
-
uverworld is pretty good. Japanese pop with synth and guitar. Friend play's it on vent all the time so.
-
Mutyumu (http://www.myspace.com/mutyumu) are pretty good and quite unknown I am told. They do the Kayo Dot trick of mixing metal with post-rock and other things into what they call "funeral classic". I was tempted to buy their album but they have no European distribution and their English is apparently not that good.
-

Guitar Wolf are excellent just for the live shows. But Wild Zero is icing, best drinking game/movie hands down, ever.
PS, saw them about 2 weeks before bass wolf died.
-
Seek thou the original Japanese psychedelic noise band, Les Rallizes Denudes. They've been releasing music off and on for the last 40 years, much of which is exceedingly brilliant. Le 12 Mars 77 is their "classic," and shouldn't be too hard to find as they're sort of hip right now.
Another great band to check out is Xinlisupreme. They're more recent, and their schtick is gothy noise-rock with synths and a melancholy shoegaze feel.
-
couldn't help but notice no one seems to have done a search ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_rock_bands gives a list of bands many with sound clips so you can hear what they do. Have fun tryikng out all the suggestions though, it looks like there could be days of entertainment just in finding groups you want to listen to.
-
My highest recommendations would go to Eastern Youth (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=15522401), Number Girl (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=61552158), Polysics (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=17586999), and Bleach (http://www.rockofjapan.com/bleach(03).html) (called Bleach03 in the U.S., due to a wimpy Christian rock band having the name).
-
couldn't help but notice no one seems to have done a search ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_rock_bands
Anyone can use Wikipedia to come up with random band names; the point of threads like this is so that you can hear actual human beings recommending specific bands that they think deserve special honor, and often describing their sound.
Hence why this is a music discussion forum, dig?
-
I'd recommend Beat Crusaders, High and Mighty Color, YUI, and Shiro Sagisu, who did the soundtrack to Bleach (an anime).
