Title: Downloading Music..?
Post by: feministjunkie on 23 Jan 2007, 07:29
I usually use Torrentz or Limewire for downloading music but I've noticed that a lot of the more obscure artists aren't on these sites/peer to peer things/whatever you call them. What sites to people use? Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Katie

Well stealing from major label artists is one thing...

Ripping off struggling bands is another. If you're going to download independent/obscure stuff you should feel obligated to give back in some way. If you like the band buy a CD or two, go to a show, get a t-shirt or poster etc.

Of course you might already be doing that in which case I look like a self-righteous dick. But its the standard preface I give in these discussions.

Anyway you should do anything illegal because its illegal and bad. But I hear about these terrible people who use this program called Soulseek.

I only use soulseek for stuff like Lykathea Aflame, where the cd is out of print, and the band is now a different band.  Is that acceptable?

I have a lot of opinions on the matter of downloading music, and I am going to save them for a thread that does not look like some random person fishing for an Oink invite, albeit, subtly.

i seriously can not get peoples obbsession with oink...seriously they only have one and a half moon blood albums on there they have absolutly nothing obscure

this (http://xpeh.harddays.net/) has more obscure albums and it dosn't even have that good a selection

the only thing oink actually has going for it is bitrate and i'm not that much of an auidiophile to give that much of a shit

Unfortunately I am not arbiter of all morality.

If only.

Of course there are quite a lot of bands who are quite happy to let you download their music *cough*archive/etree*cough*

eMusic is a pay to download service which I've heard rumours about. There's a bundled 25 song free trial with Winamp, so you can check it out without economical loss. :)

I know a depressingly large number of "indie kids" who think it's OK to download basically everything.

I can usually navigate my way a round a site that isn't in English, but it would probably be a lot easier if I knew what fucking alphabet that was they were using

I use Soulseek pretty extensively. And this may or may not make me a terrible person.

Please bear in mind though that once upon a very recent time, I lived in an area in which it was impossible to buy the music I wanted without ordering it. I'm a student...but I'm in the process now of actually buying what I can.

And if there was anything that didn't have either "death" or "metal" in the genre name.

OiNK has contained almost everything I've ever searched for on there, including but not limited to two EPs from local bands who are VERY local bands and also the Julie Doiron/Okkervil River split EP. I would say what it has going for it is its fricking huge library of music.

Soulseek's good too, from what I hear.

People from this forum should be on Slsk!

Although it's acting a little strange in the past few days. I guess it'll get back to normal in a week or two.

I use Soulseek.  It's so hit or miss though.  I'm not a "leave my computer on all the time" kind of guy, so I have to just cross my fingers and hope that whatever I want will happen to be available.  With some artists, it's just impossible to ever find someone who has them and doesn't have 100 people already in queue.

Sometimes I get lucky though, I got the new Matt Elliott album one night (it's fucking brilliant) because I really didn't want to wait for the US release (if it even gets one).

Soulseek has what I'm looking for most of the time.

I just find it easier to handle and use. Torrents just take all of my memory and I cant do anything else while I'm downloading.

My Slsk user name is this one, btw.

soulseek rarely has what i want. i really have a very hard time tracking down most music i want illegally so i just end up buying from the artists' site a lot. generally more obscure/less popular bands sell their stuff for quite cheap.

Feel free to look me up, I hardly ever have anyone in my upload queue.  I might have something you guys like.

Eh...Oink is overrated.  Can't find half the shit I'm looking for there.  Demonoid, on the other hand, mysteriously does.  And Rockbox was good for metal stuff too, but I think they didn't pay their server bill, it hasn't been up in a few months.  Then most of the industrial I like isn't on slsk, and I can't be bothered to look for the artists website to buy it.

I am TheLovableCynic on Soulseek.

We definitely need a QC room, I think.

I find MP3 blogs and sharing forums are more profitable than semi-random Soulseek action.  But I also kinda hate downloading stuff...  I think the ease with which you can grab, browse and discard shit while another 50 things are on the download is doing no one any favours.  On the flip side, well, everyone knows the benefits, I guess.

It's in Russian, so Cyrillic alphabet (seems pretty self explanatory though - all the album info is in English).

Anyway, thanks Gridgm, looks like a useful site.

www.heavytorrents.org (http://www.heavytorrents.org) has a pretty good selection of metal torrents, but it's in Spanish, and in a forum style, so ya haveta go searching for it. Demonoid also often has a lot of good stuff, and isohunt.com oftentimes comes back with the biggest search results.

i use Limwire.  and i download from Myspace or purevolume when the bands themselves put them up for downloading.  Limewire has most of what i like, but sometimes you either have to be really specific.  other times, you don't find what you're looking for at all *cough The Morning Of cough*
