Post by: KharBevNor on 23 Jan 2007, 08:46
So, basically, this thread is about Ulver.

Brill, ain't they?

Yeah, they totally are. I like Themes from Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Bergtatt the best.
Oddly enough, Kveldssanger helps me sleep a lot more than Perdition City.

EDIT: Can anyone recommend me some stuff similar to Bergtatt, I like the combination of black and folk sections.I already have some stuff similar to Nattens Madrigal.

For their heavier stuff, it's GOT to be Nattens Madrigal.

The first release I heard that was from their experimental catalogue was A Quick Fix Of Melancholy, and I was fucking hooked. I'll always be partial to that one because I was so blown away, had never heard anything like that, but I know now that Perdition City is the best

I just listened to some today.  I'm not sure what to think yet.  I'll give them several more listens.

Listen across their discography. People often say this, but you REALLY can't judge Ulver on one album. You've got to hear Perdition City, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Kveldssanger at least, Nattens Madrigal for variety.

That is because you have Parkinsons.

Ulver are probably one of my favourite bands of all time, and I consider them my "gateway drug" for pretty much all of the avant-garde and experimental music, metal and otherwise, that I listen to these days. I've even got a tattoo of the cross motif from "Blood Inside" on my arm. I actually haven't heard any of the "Black Metal Trilogy" cos, well I don't really like Black Metal, although I wouldn't mind getting Kveldssanger if I can ever find it.

I don't quite understand most of Ulver's stuff, myself. Sure, 'experimental', but it still sounds... unfinished.
Am I missing something?

I am a fan! I'm not to keen on their newer stuff (I thought Blood Inside sucked, sorry!) But their silence eps were decent enough, Nattrens is possibly the best black metal album ever, and bergtatt is particularly awesome. I really have to get around to hearing Kveldssanger. Right now though, Bergtatt is probably my favourite- it's not as good as Nattrens, but it's a lot less aggressive, so I can listen to it more often.

I have heard good things about them now from several places on the inter nets.

Kveldssanger is a pure folk album, btw.

You should go to their MySpace (http://"http://myspace.com/ulver1"). The songs on there give a pretty good indication of Ulver's work past the Black Metal Trilogie (it has two songs off of the most recent album Blood Inside, a song from the Metamorphasis EP which starts off fairly minimalist and turns into a more straight ahead rock/trip-hop song and a song from Perdition City, which is mostly instrumental ambient) , as well as a fairly in-depth rundown of all of the stages of their career.

Bergtatt is amazing, Theme's, Nattens, fuck their all awesome.

As soon as I heard the intro with that flute in track 2 on Bergtatt  I was hooked.
