So we're officially into the first quarter of 2007 and these things called albums are getting released again. So far, which new ones do you like and not like?? And why?? What are you looking forward to??
Checking the release schedule on metacritic, there is a fuckton of music I'm looking forward to that may come out this year. Also, I plan on picking up the new Shins and Deerhoof albums in about an hour.
-
Nothing has been released so far this year that has caught my attention, but that seems to be the norm for me. I am looking forward to new albums by Neurosis, Jesu, Pig Destroyer, The Red Chord, and my friends in The Pax Cecilia will be releasing their new one later this spring that in all seriousness is probably already a strong contendor for my favorite album of the year, it's that damned good. As soon as they've posted tracks online, I'll link for you guys to check out.
I gave it a listen and it really didn't stick with me, but I think that a lot of folks here may enjoy Aereogramme's new one, "My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go." It's scheduled to come out next month.
-
Low, Do Make Say Think, Explosions In The Sky and The Shins all have awesome records. I know because of
torrents latent psychic powers.
-
Ted Leo + RX, LCD Soundsystem, CYHSY, Explosions in the Sky, Arcade Fire, The Shins.
Of the one's that have come out/i've heard leaks of i'm already pretty happy about this year.
-
Come on people, Britney's coming back. BRITNEY-fucking-SPEARS.
Personally, I'm exicted for the new Of Montreal, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, El-P, Pelican, Aqualung and Motion City Sountrack albums due out this year. Also, are Iggy & The Stooges putting out an album this year or that just a rumour?
EDIT: I forgot Air!
-
New Modest Mouse and COLDPLAY??? :D thats got my pretty psyched
-
Julia, I'm pretty sure Alkaline Trio is supposed to have a new one come out this year as well, if you didn't already know...
-
Ted Leo/Rx, Bloc Party...
-
Sweet deal, thanks Tommy. And Will, I did know, thanks for the reminder! I always worry when they put out new albums now though. Ever since Good Mourning...
-
New Metallica album (wait I said that last year didn't I?) and the new Megadeth album. Megadeth are supposedly doing a cover of 'Out on the Tiles' I really hope they don't screw it up as badly as when they covered Anarchy in the UK.
Also new Bloc Party album. After hearing their new single Im anticipating an album at least as good as their debut.
-
I am not really up on what albums get released untill they come out and I can buy them, but I must admit, it looks like every local Prog-metal band I am obsessed with is putting something out this year, so I'm definately looking forward to that.
Aside from that, the only thing I know of, due to massive hyping is the new Radiohead album, which I am looking forward to, in theory.
-
i wanna hear the new modest mouse, amiina, clap your hands say yeah!, arcade fire, possibly (very slim chance) the new sigur ros will come out, and maybe the new radiohead, and i really wanna hear the new menomena (their 1st was amazing). i doubt i'll like 'em all, especially CYHSY! (which i've heard bad things about here and elsewhere) but i wanna hear 'em all nonetheless.
i've already heard the new explosions in the sky, eluvium, the shins, and do make say think. the eits album is their best yet i think. it's all around a better crafted album and it's pretty darn excellent. the eluvium album is very nice. it's a departure from his more recent work in that it doesn't rely on the distorted guitars/peddles. instead it's a lot of strings and piano and brass instruments. not my favorite (i prefered the guitar stuff) but it's still very good and 'prelude for time feelers' is a flat out beautiful song. the new do make say think is nothing extremly special. it's very nice and i really enjoy it but it's not especially memorable. still well worth looking at for any fans though and i wouldn't call it a dissapointment in any sense. finally the new shins is fairly bland and, in fact, is at times a little grating. i don't mind it and it has some worthwhile tracks but as a whole it's just....meh. not too different from their other albums really (although i'd say it might be their worst. not sure, i haven't listened to it enough to say).
-
How's 'Chinese Democracy' working out?
March 6th. Supposedly.
-
The new Maserati album is probably going to be awesome. TRL has a good year coming.
-
i keep forgetting TRL got maserati. very cool. for instrumental rock they're one of the better lablels. eits, eluvium, maserati, probably some others all in one year=a very good year indeed (now i just need a new tarentel album and i'd be all set).
-
Busdriver is streaming his new album on Myspace. It's very very good.
-
I dunno if any of these will be first-quarter:
Radiohead
Ryan Adams
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club especially, their last one was a fucking masterpiece.
-
so far my favorite is Menomena's new one.
-
March 6th. Supposedly.
The album or the event?
Same fing LOL
Honestly though, based on 'Madagascar,' if that album ever comes out, I would continue buying it.
-
Blackfield and Porcupine Tree
I'm also waiting for the new Rush album
-
New Wolf Parade is the one I'm most excited about. Then there's also LCD Soundsystem, Low, The Stooges, Maximo Park, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Bjork, Feist, Final Fantasy, Islands, Ghostface/MF Doom, Madvillain, Massive Attack, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Polyphonic Spree, and according to metacritic, a new Stars album!
-
wow, i forgot about wilco and i did not know about wolf parade, animal collective, islands, new pornographers, or stars. this is gonna be an awesome year for music (which will hopefully make up for this past year which was fairly shitty).
-
Wilco
-
March 6th. Supposedly.
The album or the event?
lol, album
-
I'm going to be buying a lot of records this year just based on good reviews and word of mouth, because I want to cast my net a bit wider than I did last year.
So far the only ones I have are Shins, Deerhoof, and Menomena.
Shins sounded great but inferior to Chutes Too Narrow, Deerhoof didn't really draw me in on the first listen (But I was half asleep at the time so I still might love it), and Menomena sounded like your standard above average indie fare.
Right now the albums I have marked for 'buy' that have specific release dates are: Lily Allen, CYHSY, Lucinda Williams, Arcade Fire, Fountains of Wayne, Bright Eyes.
-
Dinosaur Jr is supposed to come out with an album this year I think. I'm excited because it's Lou, Murph and J together again. Speaking of J, his new doom metal band Witch is releasing an album on March 7th, which I will probably pick up.
-
After a handful of spins...
The new Deerhoof is fan-fucking-tastic. If you like them at all, you will like this album. It's pretty much nothing like The Runners Four, which is startling. Lots of keyboards, drum machines, production details all over the place...it's great.
The new Shins album is also fan-fucking-tastic. Anyone, professional reviewer or otherwise, who says the album isn't a significant depature from their first two albums IS DEAF. This album puts much more of a premium on texture, nuance, and subtlety; it doesn't go for the indie pop jugular. Frankly the worst songs on it are the most 'traditional.' Maybe I'm the only person who said "yeah, those first two albums were great, but they were only a half hour a piece of mostly similar music and they really need to try something new", but I got my wish with this album. You won't be singing and humming these songs all day long, but it's inarguably a more satisfying listen for it. Wincing The Night Away is a grower if there ever was one.
p.s. I'll be seeing Deerhoof this weekend in Chicaguh, and I'm ever so curious as to how they're going to pull off the Friend Opportunity songs live.
-
working through the new menomena as i type this and boy howdy is it good. 'i am the fun blame monster' was damn good and terribly underappreciated i think. hopefully the second of those two won't be true of this one too, b/c so far it's really great.
-
The only album I can speak to so far is Friend Opportunity, which leaves me speechless. I've been listening to it for several months now though:
The new Deerhoof is fan-butternuting-tastic. If you like them at all, you will like this album. It's pretty much nothing like The Runners Four, which is startling. Lots of keyboards, drum machines, production details all over the place...it's great.
Its actually not super surprising, when Cohen left they lost a guitar. They now have a sound thats closer to pre-Cohen albums in a lot of ways. Its definitely their tighest album, the melodies and shifts are also a lot more subtle. Maybe their most accessible too. Accessible is subjective of course :-)
Also "Look Away" !!!
-
i really want the new 'from the sky,' 'american dollar music,' and 'pirate ship quintet' whenever they decide to come out (actually i think the 1st two might be, they're just hard to find). it's gonna be a good music overload over the next few months.
btw, has anyone seen menomena live? they're playing a week or so after my birthday in NYC and it would be my 1st 18+ (finally). i love 'em but i have no clue how they are live. worth seeing?
edit: just finished the album. it's definetly very good. after one listen i prefer 'IATFBM' but i need to give this one a few more listens before i can really past judgement. still, i liked what i heard quite a lot. i personally would say their sound is more unique and interesting than "standard above average indie fare." anyway, check it out if you haven't already (although i'd start with their 1st, then give this one a go, and then move onto to the really excellent 'under an hour' for something completley different).
-
I forgot to mention Sage Francis' new CD is going to be out this year, and I'm quite looking forward to that.
-
Therion - Gothic Kaballah
-
i think I really like the new Andrew Bird.
-
So far? I've not really bought anything yet that has come out in 2007, though there will be a pile to get to. What am I most looking forward to?
Skinny Puppy -Mythmaker (Jan. 30)
Client - Zerox Machine (Feb. 6)
Jesu - Conquerer (Feb. 20)
Combichrist - What the Fuck is Wrong With You? (Mar. 3)
Assemblage 23 - Meta (April)
I, Parasite - The Sick Are Not Healing (sometime 2007)
Throbbing Gristle - Infinite Knot (April 1)
And in the 'curious, but waiting to see department':
NIN - Year Zero (April)
-
I thought Low had split up, when is the new album due?
Btw, the new Skinny Puppy album got good reviews in my local newspaper this morning. I could link to it, but it's in Swedish, so I won't bother.
-
And in the 'curious, but waiting to see department':
NIN - Year Zero (April)
WTF? A new album so soon? How did that happen?
-
Year Zero is one of my favorite Samael songs, it'll be weird knowing there's an album out with the same title.
-
Jesu, Neurosis, Metallica (that's right, I am excited), The EITS hasn't impressed me that much, but I'll give it chance. Also, DO Make Say Think, and Arcade Fire. THat's all I can think of now.
-
Oh, I'm going to add Meshuggah and Eminem (fuck all of you) to this list. Plus Dr. Dre if Detox ever emerges, and David Bowie.
-
So far I can't say that anything has blown me away. However, the Broken West Record that I reviewed was pretty good.
I'm most looking forward to
Radiohead
Bright Eyes
Wilco
The Arcade Fire
There is not a whole lot that could contain my joy that these four albums are coming out this year.
Also, Modest Mouse, but I am less straight-out pumped for it.
-
David Bowie.
We should be so lucky.
-
The new Jesu is so great, guys. I got a leaked copy and it's magnificent. Dude pushes boundaries like they were dominos.
-
Good news! though I honestly didn't expect anything less.
I have found a new release to look forward to: Beneath the Massacre - Mechanics of Dysfunction on the 20th of February.
The single Society's Disposable Son is quite good. The only doubts I have are as to whether they can vary it enough, this sort of speedy disjointed dm attack would probably get tiresome over a whole album.
-
2007 is going to leave me broke as hell.
-
same with me. the sad fact of the matter is, with new releases comes new tours and that means concerts galore. more than the cds, getting to and getting into shows is gonna sap me of what little cash i have.
-
David Bowie.
We should be so lucky.
Well four years will be like, the longest gap he's left between albums, like...ever. He's been recording more or less non-stop since the Sixties.
And Heathen was amazing.
-
Tom Waits - Orphans
This is the album of the year 2007!
56 songs on 3 cd's! Fucking awesome!!
-
...that came out last year, didn't it?
-
Yeah, it's already out. I still haven't gotten it yet.
-
I'm also waiting for the new Rush album
New rush you say... do go on...
I don't know about albums this year.
I bought one album last year that was released last year, and that was The Mars Volta's "Amputechture", which i was pretty dissapointed in.
I guess we'll see what happens this year.
-
David Bowie.
We should be so lucky.
Well four years will be like, the longest gap he's left between albums, like...ever. He's been recording more or less non-stop since the Sixties.
And Heathen was amazing.
Well... yeah, but that whole heart mess had him down for a bit. I've heard tell that he's working on something (rumor being that that's why he's not going to be performing at the High Line festival after all, though he's still hosting or curating or whatever I think), but I've been trying not to get my hopes up.
Heathen was indeed amazing.
I'd be ecstatic if he released something this year, as long as it's not another hours.... Not that I hated hours..., as I don't think I've hated anything he's released, but I didn't love it either.
-
The new Of Montreal album is my favorite one yet.
-
I am practically soiling myself over what is coming out this year....if even half of the anticipated releases are worth the wait and there are a few good breakout artists (and really....when aren't there?), 2007 will be completely amazing. And I will have no savings left. Particularly exciting for me are the new Apostle of Hustle, Wilco, Islands, Final Fantasy, Menomena and Of Montreal.
And yeah, PS. Where's the love for Apostle of Hustle? National Anthem of Nowhere leaked not too long ago....has no one else bothered to find it? I rather like it.
-
I'm exicted for:
Nine Inch Nails, both the live DVD coming out next month, and the new album, out in April I believe. The way Trent's been talking about it has me quite excited. He really lost of people with [With_Teeth] though.
The Cure- Possibly a double album? Score. More like Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me than Pornography? Okay, I can deal with that. First quarter? Hellz yah.
VNV Nation, putting out both a remix/b-sides EP and full length? Score.
Tiger Army, pretensious Lovecraftian title aside, sounds good.
Danzig's lost tracks should be fun as well.
And there are rumors of Bauhaus putting something out too, which would be cool.
-
And there are rumors of Bauhaus putting something out too, which would be cool.
!!!!!!!!!!!!! What what what??? That would be beyond cool.
-
My list of what I'm looking forward to in 2007 goes like this:
Deerhoof, Modest Mouse, Wilco, Radiohead, The Shins, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Air, Low, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, Architecture In Helsinki, Massive Attack, The Postal Service, Stereolab, Tortoise, Spoon, and Wolf Parade. The sick thing is, most of these bands I still want need to buy other albums from.
Supposedly the Pixies are going to record an album this year, though I'd be amazed if it got released in 2007.
-
Are the crossed-out ones because you've already heard them and therefore can no longer be said to be "looking forward to them" or for some other reason?
-
I'm listening to Of Montreal right now.
It is rock.
I'm surprised to like this so much, because I picked up their 2005 release and was let down by it.
-
Am I the only person in the world who really really really liked The Sunlandic Twins?
-
Bah, 2007 is barely underway...
that and the fact that I have exams prevent me from finding out which band is bringing out albums...
I'm expecting a new Nightwish album halfway through the year, and hopefully, Judas Priest will do some good with their concept album "Nostradamus"
-
Am I the only person in the world who really really really liked The Sunlandic Twins?
No, you're not. I loved it.
-
Van Halen. Are reuniting with Roth. I don't know if there's gonna be an album, but there's a tour.
-
Oh man, I haven't listened to VNV Nation in FOREVER! I might have to check their new stuff out.
I've gotten a chance to listen to Cursed's EP "Blackout At Sunrise" and I have to say that it's everything I had hoped it would be, and has left me drooling with anticipation for their new album "III" that's supposed to come out this year.
-
Are the crossed-out ones because you've already heard them and therefore can no longer be said to be "looking forward to them" or for some other reason?
I've not only heard them, I've given my views on them in this and other threads.
-
penpen17: hooray it's not just me then. I was beginning to worry that either I or everyone else was lacking in taste or something.
valley_parade: There is no way a Van Halen/Roth reunion is going to last, or be survived without bloodshed. There's way too much baggage and ego floating around for that to happen.
ScrambledGregs: pssht like I remember stuff.
-
Van Halen. Are reuniting with Roth. I don't know if there's gonna be an album, but there's a tour.
Again? EVH looks like he's already died once.
-
I have a list of 20+ bands that I am waiting for releases from. I keep adding new stuff every day. IT IS STARTING TO GET CRAZY.
-
I'm actually kinda getting in to the Klaxons. Well, more so than any other British band in the last five years to recieve airplay. I could comfortably dance to 'Magick' in a club.
It was really kind of wierd to just be sitting in a bar and be like "hmnn, cool beats...hang on, they're singing about Aleister Crowley!" *look up* "ooh, flourescent paint is vomiting out of a mans eyes, this beats the Arctic Monkeys any day."
I have to say though, I'm about 500 levels of liking them below the jittering enthusiasm of music journalists who just had the pathways in their brain they wired open with ecstacy binges in the early nineties zapped for the first time in a decade.
-
Kharbevnor: I get the feeling you've a Crowley/Thelema fixation or somesuch?
Anyways, I'd lose copious amounts of drool if Bauhaus or Bowie were to release new albums. Bauhaus is one of my favourite bands of all time (I'm actually wearing a Bauhaus T-shirt now, but that's neither here nor there) and Bowie is my all-time favourite artist of ever.
-
I am still bitter that I've missed every single opportunity to see Bauhaus that has ever presented itself to me.
Which is...um...three? But still. I'm bitter.
Maybe if they really do release a new album I'll have another chance. Yes.
Oh jesus god I hope that JAMC-at-Coachella means they might do something new and then play again somewhere I CAN go. Oh god oh god.
-
Kharbevnor: I get the feeling you've a Crowley/Thelema fixation or somesuch?
Well, as a practising Thelemist, I would have to say, yes.
-
Kharbevnor: I get the feeling you've a Crowley/Thelema fixation or somesuch?
Well, as a practising Thelemist, I would have to say, yes.
Ehhh, that'd do it alright.
-
Love is the law etc. etc.
I'm pretty loose and lax in my whole approach, but as the beast himself said, 'I want each man to cut his own way through the jungle.'
My path is quite erratic and includes frequent rest stobs.
-
I was fairly interested in Crowley's stuff about 3 years or so ago, but I don't have the focus or intellectual fortitude to really apply myself to anything like that.
Instead I've just got a weird-arsed thing of my own that could've been made by a psychotic bowerbird. Or something.
-
I think the best thing about Crowley is that you really don't need to read the entire body of work (which is an insane undertaking, I've read about a sixth of it at most. His later stuff, particularly 'The Confessions of Aleister Crowley', 'The Magical Diaries of Aleister Crowley' and his poetry, ends up condensing a lot of his philosophies into a far more digestible form: A lot of his writings can be discarded, or at least overlooked, by anyone not interested in serious ritual magick. To be a Thelemist you only really need to understand what Crowley means by the word 'will', and his conception of strength versus weakness. Most of the rest is technical details, and I'm not much of a magician. Hell, I use more wiccan ritual systems than I do thelemic.
I'd also like to point out that, whilst I think he's the closest thing we've had to a messiah in the last hundred years, he was an egotistical arsehole and a blatant racist. Unfortunately, a lot of the great men of his time were.
-
Didn't Gardener (or however his name was spelled) lift a fair few Thelemic rituals or at least the basis for them anyway?
I must get the biography I've got of Crowley off my girlfriend and start reading his work again, it's been far too long since I've read anything by him.
-
Pretty much. L. Ron Hubbard lifted good portions of Dianetics from OTO material as well.
-
I forgot to mention Sage Francis' new CD is going to be out this year, and I'm quite looking forward to that.
Really? Excellent news!

Last year the bands I expected the most from (With the exceptions of Dylan and Newsom) were sort of let downs. But if only half of the albums set to come out this year come out and live up to expectations, it could be the best year for music in years.
Is anyone else anticipating the new album by Lucinda Williams? I know she's alt-country and not really indie, but I think Sweet Old World, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, and World Without Tears are all very good albums.
-
Wilco
Modest Mouse
Wolf Parade
Ted Leo/Rx
Explosions in the Sky
The new Shins album is excellent also.
-
Spoon is supposed to have a new album out this year, and I'm really excited for that.
-
So, the new Arcade Fire finally (lol, the internet makes you stupid, or rather, spoiled.) leaked. What are you guyses thoughts? I think it's pretty defining that the, in my opinion, best track is "No Cars Go", which was already on the ep before Funeral. The rest is okay, of course, but somehow not as... dunno, charming, for lack of a better word, as Funeral.
-
Looking forward to new stuff from Low, Deerhoof, Shellac, Bottomless Pit, Blonde Redhead, Do Make Say Think and a couple of others I can't recall right now.
The new Do Make Say Think looks to be hella sweet.
-
Throbbing Gristle have a new album coming out in April. I'm looking forward to it.
-
I had a dream last night that I was in a music store and all the CDs I wanted to buy that are coming out in 2007 were there, but I could only afford three of them. It was awful...
-
Looking forward to new stuff from Low, Deerhoof, Shellac, Bottomless Pit, Blonde Redhead, Do Make Say Think and a couple of others I can't recall right now.
The new Do Make Say Think looks to be hella sweet.
that's because it is! it really grew on me and now i love it. well worth checking out.
-
I was thinking...exactly how much better 2007 is than 2006 so far for music.
By this time last year I'm not sure if I had two albums from 2006 I liked.
So far in 2007 there's already...
The Shins, Deerhoof, Of Montreal, Patty Griffin, Field of Music, and a couple other ones not at that level but quite good.
And a bunch more albums from good bands coming out just in the next couple weeks. Not to mention the fact that almost all my favorite bands are set to release albums at some point this year.
So far for me the only major disappointment is Lucinda Williams. It's like at some point since 2003 she was put on mood stabilizers. Because West just sounds like fragments of World Without Tears, on repeat, stripped of emotion. Then again, Essence sucked too, so many there's some kind of Star Trek movie pattern going on with her and her next album will rock.
-
NEON BIBLE
that's it. no need to listen to anything else.
-
Therion - Gothic Kaballah
As well as new Sirenia.
-
Favourite albums of 2007 so far-
Electronic division:
Syrian - Alien Nation (this one comes first 'cos I just got it, am currently listening to it, and it's absolutely amazing even by their standards)
Virtual Server - Setup
Neuropa - The Blitz <3
Boyfriendgirlfriend - Name Names
Melotron - Propaganda
Angels & Agony - Unison
Others:
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Living With The Living (oh god oh god so fuckin' awesome)
Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden...
Jesu - Conqueror
Blackfield - Blackfield II
-
65 days of static
Biffy Clyro
The New Pornographers
Islands
Arcade Fire
and a stack of others from reading through this thread and being all 'ooh! i'll be getting that when it comes out!!'
Stuff I've heard/got from this year:
Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone = stunning. repeat listens garner great rewards.
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away = i thought it was instantly likeable. some really really great tracks
Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City = not as 'instant' as their first, it's still a cracking album.
Hella - There's No 666 in Outerspace = i'm enjoying it. not listened to a lot by the band but i like it.
-
Gothic Kaballah is pretty damn good it's going to be hard to beat it I think.
That said Summoning are putting out a new EP this year!!!!!! I though Oath Bound was the best album of last year (and the best thing Summoning's done since Stronghold) so I'm heaps excited.
Die Verbannten Kinder Evas have a new album out as well, it's supposed to be pretty good, protector's been colaberating with a new female singer from Greece.
Protector also mentioned he might Final release a new Ice Ages (he's EBM side project) cd as well, looks like it's gonig to be a busy year for him, I look forward to it.
I'm listening to the Boris /Michio Kurihara cd now, it's not bad either, seems liek a pretty good year so far.
-
I'd forgot to mention Sundowner (Chris McCaughan) on March 13, Dungen on May 1st, and Chris Walla..I think he said September?
-
I saw Busdriver and Deerhoof last night, and both their performances showed that their new material flows well with the old.
Deerhoof-Friend Opportunity is my favorite of their's to date (Runners Four is a close second)
Busdriver's album is pretty good. Coral (the guy that ran the decks / triggerbox / Powerbook G4) is pretty damn good. I hand him props for a fun dance party right before the Deerhoof madness.
-
Month-ish later bump GOOOOO
So I guess the new Modest Mouse and LCD Soundsystem albums are good?? Damn, more CDs I hafta buy. I wish we could have a year where nobody releases anything so I could catch up on all the albums I need to get from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s.
-
I'm sorta surprised that nobody's talking about the upcoming Queens of the Stone Age album "Era Vulgaris." I think they're still good.
-
Guys, Funhouse, shit I mean The Weirdness. Wait, it sucks? Why am I not suprised in the least?
-
I'm just looking forward to Fugees comeback... If it ever comes out, that is... Wu-Tang Clan's supposed to be doing a new one too.
Also... Queens of the Stone Age is coming out with a new one I'm kind of looking forward to. Even though I'm not gonna get my hopes up to much, since "Lullabies To Paralyze" wasn't all that great. Except for "I Never Came" that was a pretty damn good song.
And the best of the year so far for me... I'd have to say probably goes to Deerhoof. The Shins really dissapointed me. Arcade Fire's okay.
-
I'm not very impressed with 2007's output so far. I'm pretty sure I had some great 2006 albums in my listening collection this time last year, but the only great record I've had this year is by the Hold Steady and even that's patchy.
-
You must not like Deerhoof, the Shins, or Arcade Fire that much, then, since each of those three bands have released an album I consider to be the best or one of the best things they've ever done.
-
I guess he also doesn't like Do Make Say Think, Explosions in the Sky, Eluvium, Maserati, Modest Mouse, Menomena, Rob Crow, or Cex, because all of those bands new albums are, at the least, quite good and at best really fantastic.
-
I've heard rumors of a new Sigur Ros album late this year, or perhaps next year.
-
Maserati, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Rwake, Worker Bee, !!!, Besnard Lakes, Blonde Redhead, Bjork (haven't heard it yet but I have high hopes), DINOSAUR FUCKING JUNIOR, Shellac (again, haven't heard but hopes are high), Domink Eulberg, Grails, Gui Boratto, Heaviness, Jesu...
2007 is a GREAT year for music already.
-
I've heard rumors of a new Sigur Ros album late this year, or perhaps next year.
We should be so lucky to have it this year. I think it's highly unlikely that it'll be out any time before next year. I'm uncontrollably excited for it though, so this year would be a godsend.
-
Yeah, from what I've read they've just started working on it in the past few months. But we can always hope. :-D
-
The new Dodheimsgard is fucking awesome.
-
Rhys Chatham - A Crimson Grail (For 400 Electric Guitars): Absurdly huge and superfluous, one of the coolest live albums (and live album concepts) I've ever had the privilege of hearing.
Times New Viking - Present the Paisley Reich: Lo-fi indie-pop/rock with tons of attitude (band-wide vocal harmonies w/ manic female vocalist = the love of my life) and great hooks.
The Magik Markers - Last of the Retsin/You Can't Fuck a Clock: I love the concept behind this band, but this is the first album to really wow me on its purely musical merits. A lovely pair of opening tracks.
Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm: YEAH!
-
You must not like Deerhoof, the Shins, or Arcade Fire that much, then,
YOU MUST BE PSYCHIC OMG
-
Menomena, Arcade Fire, Ted Leo + Rx, LCD Soundsystem, Low, Deerhoof, The Shins..man it's already been quite a year.
My only true dissapointments so far have been Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's new one and the mediocrebutstillnotterrible Modest Mouse album.
-
The only thing that has really made me marvel so far is !!! - Myth Takes. It is just so damn good and danceable.
Jesu and Dalek were good(as expected) but not revelations which I had sorta hoped for. Finntroll's new album will kick arse though, I am sure of it.
-
To be completely honest, I don't hold out any hope for Modest Mouse recording a completely great album every again. It's the same way I feel about Beck. Both of their best and most groundbreaking work was done in the 90s, and nowadays they keep releasing passable to almost great albums.
Of course, Johnny Marr joining the band was a wildcard, but it turns out he didn't really add or subtract much of anything. I would've hardly known there was a former Smiths musical wunderkid in the band if we all hadn't heard about it for months now.
-
To be completely honest, I don't hold out any hope for Modest Mouse recording a completely great album every again.
Really? I think "We Were Dead" is easily on par with their earlier work, so if it's not "great" then that stuff must not be great by defualt. It's just a new kind of Modest Mouse, I mean, I'd start to call "We Were Dead" great before I'd call something like "Long Drive" great, or even "Lonesome Crowded West." It's just that the lyrics are toned down and the music itself has taken on a poppier edge. And the lyrics may sound like a bad thing, but I think now it's more of a "not what he's saying but how he's saying it" thing. At least for me, basically the lyrics on this album are secondary in my ear to the music and the vocal style itself.
But honestly. All the new music that's been coming out has been boring me, with the exception of Deerhoof, and Modest Mouse, though I'm pretty sure about 3/4 of the album will start to bore me before too long. Just like every other MM album.
-
It's just that the lyrics are toned down and the music itself has taken on a poppier edge.
Well I know for some people that's part of the problem. For someone who prefers a poppyer sound (and you seem to fall into that group based upon your comments) than We Were Dead... would be a better album than The Lonesome Crowded West, for example. But what I, and many other MM fans I know, like is the rough, raw, and decidedly unpoppy sound of the earlier albums. Often more jarring and less refined, the earlier albums have an unvarnished energy which the new material, while still pretty good in my opinion, lacks. We Were Dead... is not nearly as good as some of thier older albums, I'd contend, and one of the main reasons is in fact the "toned down lyrics and poppier edge."
-
So far, the new Low album is my favourite of the year. It is just incredible, I have to say. Other than that, Besnard Lakes, Arcade Fire, Feist, Frog Eyes, LCD Soundsystem, and Of Montreal have all been great. And I still have tons to listen to as well. 2007 is shaping up very nicely.
-
Well, I do know that people can like stuff personally less because it's not asthetically like earlier stuff. But, I mean, the toned down lyrics and poppier edge started on The Moon & Antarctica. And bands just change, sometimes it truly does lead to a decline in the quality of the music itself, but I don't think this is one of those cases. And I personally like both the styles that they've kind of exhibited.
Modest Mouse as everyone knew them is dead. But... I don't think this has led to them being any worse.
-
The new Frog Eyes is pretty good methinks. After only one listen I can say it's not spectacular but I do like it alot. At first glance it seemed maybe a little cleaner to me than some of thier earlier stuff but I could be wrong. Definetly an album worth looking at though. As for the new Low album, well it's really really good. One of the best albums I've heard this year in fact. I think I'm seeing them live in April and this new album (their best? could be) has me even more excited.
-
Devin Davis is going back into the studio. I have no idea when he hopes to have the album out, but that news alone pretty much makes my year.
-
I forgot. South African folk singer Vusi Mahlasela (http://www.vusimahlasela.com/) has a new record out this year. Since he is consistently excellent I'm excited to check this out.
-
So... the new CYHSY is... really really nothing like the first album at all. It's nowhere near as catchy, and a lot more dense and ominous. This is going to take a lot of listening to before I can make up my mind, but jesus what a weird choice for a sophomore effort. They've finally got a major label release, and a wider audience and... well... Take me for an example. I introduced them to my girlfriend since they're coming to town... She listened to 'Thunder and well... was honestly turned off. I played some from their first album and she liked it more.
I'm not saying going slow and dense is a bad move... It's just an interesting one.
As far as 2007 goes, Menomena has it all so far followed by Deerhoof. I am honestly just listening to Crane Wife over and over again right now though.
-
You can thank Dave Fridmann for the dense sound.
I don't like that record much.
-
I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only person in the world who really, really, REALLY loves the version of the title track on Some Loud Thunder . . .
Also, today I bought the new Low album based solely on the recommendations in this thread. So basically, what I'm saying is that if I don't like it then you're all going to have to pool together to write me a cheque for A$30. (I have to say though, that before even putting it in the C.D. player the packaging is AAA+.)
-
Clutch!
-
I would like to tie together two tangents in this thread, if I may.
I listened to a few clips of the new Modest Mouse via iTunes. You might say it's unfair to base a perception about an album on 30 second clips on iTunes, but bear with me before you disagree. The sound I hear on the new Modest Mouse is decidedly more produced, clean, and--for lack of a better word--poppy. If I had not known it was MM, I would have thought it was some flavor of the week alt rock/emo/whatever passes for mainstream these days band. It just didn't sound a god damn thing like the MM I know and love. To say that the poppy and more toned down stuff began on The Moon & Antarctica is a bald faced lie because that album is long, druggy, and experimental. The lyrics are out and out psychedelic--compare them to their earlier stuff and it feels like a great artistic leap. I'm not saying MM shouldn't experiment with their sound, but this is a horrible way to do it. Quite unlike my next point.
Low are a band who made a career out of releasing--arguably--the same basic album every year or so, but having such great songwriting and sense of melody that it worked, and worked really well. I would argue that Secret Name and Things We Lost In The Fire were the absolute peak of the 'classic' Low slowcore/minimalist sound. After that point, the band has been steadily edging toward something new. At first it was tentative on Trust and then a full jump on The Great Destroyer. From the sound clips I heard of the new album, Low have finally completed their journey away from minimalist rock into spooky electronica and fuzzy rock.
I see so many bands either releasing great versions of the same basic template or moving into new sonic territory that it's hard to cut MM any slack because where they're going isn't somewhere I care to hear. I will probably download the album somewhere and give it a few spins, but it's hard to believe anyone would prefer it to their earlier work.
-
I never said I preferred the new MM over their earlier work.
Also, the Moon & Antartica may be long and experimental. But it's still more pop than their earlier stuff. It's called a gradual transition. Things don't just start and stop at random. Just look at fucking "Gravity Rides Everything" and you can't even deny that it wasn't pop at all. If you can't see it then you must be deaf.
-
Harry, buy any Low album. They are all mesmerising.
Low are just one of many bands that I haven't quite got around to getting into yet. I mean, I've had Things We Lost in the Fire for years now but I haven't got any of their (quite substantial) back catalogue. Maybe it's because Things, while I enjoy it and while it has some songs I really like, has never really grabbed me. Anyway, I listened to Drums and Guns and I liked it, but my reaction was much like my reaction to Things: it's good, but it didn't really demand that I stop doing everything and just listen. But then, I find myself loving Neon Bible more and more with each listen, so I'm going to suspend judgment on Drums until I've had a chance to listen to it a few more times.
-
Give Secret Name a try. It's engineered by Steve Albini, so you know it's going to sound fantastic, especially given Low's at-the-time minimalist aesthetic. 'Home' is one of the most shockingly powerful album closing songs I've ever heard, and it's just a voice and a guitar if I remember correctly.
-
Bands that've released albums I've really gotten into so far this year:
Of Montreal
Amy Winehouse
Andrew Bird
Arcade Fire
Modest Mouse
Vieux Farka Toure
Patty Griffin
LCD Soundsystem
Bands that've released albums I've liked to a lesser degree this year:
The Shins
Panda Bear
Low
Deerhoof
Menomena
The Besnard Lakes
The Apples In Stereo
MUCH better than last year so far. By the time last year all I had that I was into was The Knife, Destroyer, and Neko Case.
-
2006 was a year for great music that got absolutely no publicity.
I would disagree with your assesment of Panda Bear's record for sure, and Low's as well.
-

2006's great music didn't really come until August-November, though.
-
The great music didn't come out until August-November?
Scott Walker?
Liars?
The Knife?
Tapes'n'Tapes?
Girl Talk?
Danielson?
Eagles Of Death Metal?
Belle And Sebastian?
Cat Power?
Destroyer?
Sunset Rubdown?
There are more I'm missing, I'm sure. All of those came out before August.
-
Heh I've only heard Therion and Boris from this year.
Therion's going to be damn hard to beat, though if there is one band that can do it I have no doubt it will be Summoning, so yeah very much looking forward to later in the year.

I think it's easy to see 2007 as a better year because more big name bands are releasing good-to-great albums, whereas 2006 was a year where lesser names got to shine. Yeah, I'm generalizing, which is a dangerous game...but still.
Also: do you really consider The Greatest, well, great?? I only ask because it seems like it got a lukewarm reception. At first it kind of turned me off, and I didn't think she could pull off the country/soul thing that well, but it starts to get really good if you give it enough time. Also, some of my favorite songs off of it are performed on her 'Speaking For Trees' DVD, so it was cool to hear 'The Moon' and 'Islands' in an album context. I still prefer her "depressed, alcoholic, cool-art-student-chick-you-could-never-hope-to-land" albums, but...

I didn't say *no* good albums came out before August. Just, fewer than came out this year before April. The Knife and Destroyer are fantastic, so were Howe Gelb, Herbert. Scott Walker, Neko Case, Roseanne Cash, Serena Maneesh, Sonic Youth were good.
And that's not counting all the people who have releases in the next couple months this year. Wilco, Fountains of Wayne, MIA (Though she's going to have lots of hype backlash and will probably be bashed even if she's good), Thee More Shallows, Feist, Bjork, Dungen, Interpol.
-
Soo, Panda Bear's new album is pretty sweet I must say.

The Greatest is a really great record. I admire and enjoy it not only because it's remarkably cohesive, but also because the songwriting on it is consistently excellent.
Bill, though this is by no means definitive, let me just double check that list of pre-August records and compare it to my ten favourite albums from 2006.
10. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere - released in May
9. Eagles Of Death Metal - Death By Sexy - released in April
8. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Etiquette - released in March
7. Cat Power - The Greatest - released in February
6. Shout Out Out Out Out - Not Saying/Just Saying - released in July
5. Joanna Newsom - Ys - released in November
4. Ladyhawk - s/t - released in June
3. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies released in February
2. Malajube - Trompe L'oeil - released in Februrary
1. Liars - Drum's Not Dead - released in February
As you can see I patently disagree with the assertion that all the great music in 2006 was released after August; however, I stand by my statement that a lot of those records did not get the publicity they deserved while other higher-profile records sort of tanked.
-
I'm just holding my breath for Bjork's new album
-
Soo, Panda Bear's new album is pretty sweet I must say.
The next time I can reasonably spend some money, I am going to drive all over hell's half acre until I find this somewhere. I've heard some of the songs via Pitchfork and it sounds like an amazing album. God do I love Animal Collective.
-
Also: do you really consider The Greatest, well, great??
Just to weight into this little mini-discussion - I only bought the Greatest very recently, when it was re-released in a slipcase and at half-price. I was wary of buying it when it came out, not only because of the sometimes lukewarm reviews but also because I was actually pretty underwhelmed by You Are Free. On the other hand, Moon Pix is one of my all-time favourite albums (I have a strange relationship with it, that resulted from me spontaneously coming up with a story idea when I was listening to it in the shop and then buying it and listening to it obsessively for the next fortnight while I wrote said story), so I always take an interest in a new Cat Power record. Anyway, long story short: the Greatest is, I think, the best Cat Power album since Moon Pix. It's gorgeous and I love it.
-
Nothing stands out just yet. However, I can say that Fall Out Boy's Infinity On High was disappointing as they didn't seem to have grown one bit. And I mean, their starting point wasn't even that high in the first place, so... :|
-
Mini-discussion, Ho!!
I've always liked The Covers Record the best, but mostly because it's so minimal and emphasizes her voice and presence so well.
-
I posted a thread about this but I realized I should have just put it in here. So yeah, the new Amiina album, their first LP, Kurr, leaked recently and it's really great. Sigur Ros' string quartet is a much more versatile group than they might seem at first glance or if you only know of them through Sigur Ros. They have rather beautiful music with nice strings but lots of cool electronics as well and some unique instrumental stuff: the singing saw plays heavily in some songs for example. It's not the best album I've heard all year but Kurr is really a nice listen and I'd say it's in the top 5 at the moment. Well worth checking out for someone looking for something a little different than most of the releases being discussed on this thread so far.
-
How's 'Chinese Democracy' working out?
March 6th. Supposedly.
Ha, that was dead wrong.
-
Nothing stands out just yet. However, I can say that Fall Out Boy's Infinity On High was disappointing as they didn't seem to have grown one bit.
To be somewhat fair to the Fall Out Boys, the singles off of their first record proved they had a knack for sugary but catchy hooks. Unfortunately the new single has an interesting chorus and a frustrating rest of the song (though the piss-take on Avenged Sevenfold towards the end of the video is quite funny). I doubt I'll even investigate this new one.

I wasn't blown away by this one. Maybe it needs a couple more listens but even though it's very pleasant to listen to, a few of the tracks seemed a bit formulaic and didn't really grab my attention the way the ones on the EPs did. It's definitely a good CD but it needs a bit more variation.
-
I agree. I definetly like the album a lot. I definetly think it has many excellent songs. But the EP and the single are better. I love all the songs on both those releases and I'm finding myself not overly infatuated with some of the songs on Kurr. But it is a very nice, enjoyable album to listen to and it works wonderfully as background music even if some of the songs are a tad tired if paid close attention to. Still, I'd say it's a release well worth checking out. I'd just say don't expect every song to live up to the EP/Single.
-
Now ive been waiting for Rush's newest outing Snakes and Arrows, from about the second they said they were going to make another album, but sweet hell! i heard the new single Far Cry and man it is so good. Snakes and Arrows tops my list for 07
-
I like this new Deerhoof album thing - it was my first Deerhoof experience and I liked it muchly. Also, I am kinda surprised that no-one has been liking the Au Revoir Simone album, which is my favourite thing of the year so far. It is like sitting on a balcony type thing with a cigarette and a cold drink and a pretty girl you like but you are only friends with and you are chatting and stuff and then you kiss and the sun is setting and you feel kind of floaty.
-
The new Ponys record is really awesome. They're cribbing from Sonic Youth, Television and others, but the songwriting and recording are so superb that it comes across as really fresh and great.
-
I don't believe the new Rob Crow (of Pinback) album, "Living Well," has been mentioned. But it's worth mentioning because it's really great. Temporary Residence Limited continues to be one of my favorite, if not my overall favorite, label out there. This new Rob Crow is just one of many new releases from the label this year and so far everything I've heard has been great. "Living Well" is very much like other Pinback work so it's definetly worth checking out if you're a fan. Great stuff!
Also, the new Panda Bear (from Animal Collective) album is fantastic. Panda Bear is playing a show in June for which I already have tickets based largely on the merits of this new album.
-
Has anyone heard the A Sunny Day in Glasgow record? It's really chopped up noise pop, and I'm a total sucker for it at the moment.
-
It got pretty decent reviews, didn't it?
-
I'm kind of surprised more people haven't been creaming their pants in here about Hissing Fauna, because that album is the shit.
And Friend Opportunity was my first Deerhoof album, and it's a hell of a one. Great stuff.
-
Friend Opportunity is quite good. I think I like Runners Four better though.
Now that more time has passed, here's a new 'best of the year so far' list from me:
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Patty Griffin - Children Running Through
Vieux Farka Toure - s/t
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
-
The new Ponys record is really awesome. They're cribbing from Sonic Youth, Television and others, but the songwriting and recording are so superb that it comes across as really fresh and great.
Just heard the new Ponys record and I've got to say that even though the influences are fairly transparent, as you noted, it is a great rock record.
Also, I'm sure this has already been discussed elsewhere in this thread or on this forum but the new Low album is flooring me as I listen to it for the first time. This is my first Low record so I wasn't sure what to expect, and it is understated brilliance to the core IMHO.
-
I have not listened to the new Low thoroughly yet. But I just got it, as well as The Great Destroyer, so I certainly have some major listening to do. Funnily enough, one of my friends is the cousin of Zak Sally, former bassist from Low.
-
I only liked a couple of releases this year, not to say most of the releases are bad, just not much appealing after the first listen.
My vote to:
Arcade Fire
Tera Melos
-
Not technically an Album but Nocturno Culto's movie "The Misanthrope" is out in a few weeks
http://www.peaceville.com/themisanthrope/
Apparently it's a "Fictional Doccumentary" whatever the hell that means in the creators own words:
"a totally weird film with no actual information, but with atmosphere and self-irony. "
He also composed a whole bunch of music for it, should be interesting.
-
New Shellac album due imminently...
However, something that is already out; Marnie Stern. Probably the most exciting album of the year, it's left me flabbergasted at the lasses ability to ease Steve Vai finger taping and plank wanking into a listenable and enjoyable pop song format, plus it has Zach from Hella playing his typical messy style all over each song. In a word, it's brilliant.

-
It's no wonder she's on Kill Rock Stars. Great tip, man.
-
I'm looking forward to the new Suzanne Vega. It's out soon courtecy of Blue Note Records ... I have no ide whether that will impact her songs at all or much or not but I want to find out.
Also, the new series Dr.Who has started but that is a horse of a different colour.
-
I need to either start buying only brand new albums or whore myself out for money, because I cannot afford to buy all the albums I've missed over the past 50 years AND buy the ones that are coming out every week. Or I should just get an external HD and get over my moral scruples about downloading music.
I want the Panda Bear album so bad I can taste it. But I need to wait til my next credit card cut off...
-
For those who don't know, the new Nine Inch Nails album has leaked to.. well, wherever you usually get such stuff from, by now. It's... interesting. Definitely too complex to form an opinion based on the first impression. And yes, it is better than the last one. Not that that's much of an achievement, but if Trent had lost it, he has at least to some extent regained it.
-
i guess i'm waiting for the new Crowded House album (yes, they've reformed) and the new Radiohead album.
-
I should just get an external HD and get over my moral scruples about downloading music.
I want the Panda Bear album so bad I can taste it.
Psh, forget the morals. In the long run they're not worth it and even if you do really end up feeling badly you can simply delete anything you downloaded. If it helps, the new Panda Bear is a really great album.
-
At the moment I'm not listening to much apart from
DJ Scotch Egg - Scotchhausen
Roll Deep - Rules And Regulations
I picked up the new Malcolm Middleton today though, and I can't imagine being disappointed with that.
-
hmm, *queues up Panda Bear*
been hearing good things about them all around
DLing AF's Neon Bible and the new Bear Colony at the moment.
new Deerhoof has me giddy! and quite surprised at how hard it is.
earnest question: anyone know if the new bloc party is worth a damn?
found a leak of Bjork's "Earth Intruders" today: http://www.zshare.net/audio/bjork-earth-intruders-radio-edit-mp3.html
from the upcoming Volta.
i couldn't help it. i was terribly curious!
*does a jig*
-
earnest question: anyone know if the new bloc party is worth a damn?
I've only heard the first couple of tracks but it sounds promising, and a lot of people I know seem to like it. Might be worth a go anyway.
This week's turning out rather nicely - having gotten leaks of the new VNV Nation and NiN albums in the last couple days, it now turns out there's a new 2CD Stars Of The Lid album floating around... and I still can't stop listening to The Field's album... it never ends.
-
Actually I don't think the new Bloc Party record is much good at all. The music isn't bad but Kele has become borderline unbearable.
-
I don't know that the last two Low albums are so bad, it's just that they been doing near-perfect variations on the same idea for a decade and suddenly things changed. Who knows why. I would say they're the perfect collector's band for all their singles, EPs, and whatnot, making the A Lifetime Of Temporary Relief boxset a godsend.
-
I have as of yet been unable to find any torrents and such for any Low albums pre-The Great Destroyer. That being said, I absolutley love The Great Destroyer and Drums and Guns is one of my favorite releases so far this year.
Good to hear there's like..what another 10 years or so of fantastic back Low albums I can look foward to checking out.
-
That box-set is fabulous, I only bought it about five months ago but I'm glad I did. Not so hot is the Sebastian Schrade film 'Low in Europe' which has the band bored, exhausted and basically at the end of their tether whilst on tour in Germany and the UK. The performance footage is okay (specifically 'The Lamb' and 'Canada') but the rest is pretty bleak viewing, aside from a few genuinely Spinal Tap moments. For example, there's a scene where the director inexplicably asks a puzzled looking Napalm Death if they are fans of Low.
I'm glad you said that, because something seemed off about that film to me, too. I don't know a hell of a lot about the band members themselves, but Alan comes off really pissy and angry throughout the whole film.
-
The only rock-doc that exists is Some Kind Of Monster. I don't know what you guys are talking about.
-
Right, I'm looking for a torrent of this movie now.
-
Already Released: Ensiferum - Victory Songs
+ There are new great songs like Victory Song, Wanderer, The New Dawn, One More Magic Potion and Blood is the Price of Glory
+ The new sound is still pretty good
- After the leaving off old vocalist, Jari M'a'enp'a''a', the "singing" (or croaking) has come more fuzzy and unclear
- About half of the songs are little bit too anesthetizing
- Not as good as the previous albums
Arcane gives: 7,5/10
I am also looking forward to buy Wintersun - Time and Turisas - The Varangian Way as soon as they come out (both will be released in summer).
[edit] ...forum doesn't understand scandinavian letters 'a' and 'o' :(

Why do you guys keep giving me reasons to love Steve Albini?? I don't need any more. You can stop now.

I checked out the Marnie Stern album based on this, and it is fairly fantastic. Two thumbs up, and a big toe.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow record?
Holy wow! listen (http://hypem.com/search/a%20sunny%20day%20in%20glasgow/1/). 5:15 Train is probably my favourite so far, though I've only heard about three tracks and they've all been strong.
-
Rap wise this is going to be a great yr. with a crap load of people releaseing albums everyone from El-P to Ruff Draft
-
Already Released: Ensiferum - Victory Songs
Ooh I didn't realise this was out yet I'll have to look for it, I'm a big fan of Ensiferum. Not such a huge Wintersun fan though, too shreddy and not enough atmosphere I'll probably be skipping that one...
[edit] ...forum doesn't understand scandinavian letters 'a' and 'o' :(
Yeah this forum really needs unicode support.
I've heard from a few people the new Graveland album "Will Stronger Then Death" is pretty good, I enjoyed "Fire Chariot of Destruction" so I'll probably pick this up. Otherwise I'm still holding out for a new Samael album and Summoning's ep.
According to Kanwulf's label
The new Nargaroth album will be "Semper Fidelis" and might get released this year, which would be sweet if it does.

I listened to Drums and Guns over this weekend for the first time and I think it's absolutely incredible. I've never listened to any other Low albums, though, so it's interesting to hear that the sound has changed that drastically. Now I'm left with the burning question: will I like the previous albums as much?
Only one way to find out. You've all prompted me to try to find me some early Low albums. Particular album recommendations, anyone?
-
I'm kind of surprised more people haven't been creaming their pants in here about Hissing Fauna, because that album is the shit.
This man speaks the truth. I love it dearly. Saw them perform all of it in Athens a couple of weeks ago :)
-
I checked out the Marnie Stern album based on this, and it is fairly fantastic. Two thumbs up, and a big toe.
I'm still waiting for my physical copy to drop through the door, along with a T-shirt. She's currently on tour, hoping to catch her in london.
She's the most imaginitive thing I've heard for a long while, although this morning something else landed on my doormat:
An album recorded in 2004/2005, I think it was released last year. Everlovely Lightningheart are a revolving cast of musicians centred around a core trio from Long Beach. Pulling noises from near enough anything that can make a noise, they've created a 40 minute album of abstract sound, beautiful instrumentation and vocal drones. Like the ambient elements of early Godspeed tied together to create a celebratory journey into sound.

Currently out on Hydrahead, with some lovely packaging.

Secret Name is by far my favorite.

I have Drums and Guns, The Great Destroyer, and Things We Lost In The Fire. I've only really listened to The Great Destroyer and Things We..., and I enjoy them, but neither of them have really grabbed me. I'll make sure to check out I Could Live in Hope sometime soon.
-
I just downloaded From Here We Go Sublime by the Field, and while I agree with Johnny C that the collective critical orgasm the thing inspired seems a bit overly enthusiastic it is a great album from what I've heard so far. It progresses organically, very good stuff. I'll write on it again after I've completely absorbed it.
I'm sure we've probably had entire threads already devoted to this but has anyone heard the Grinderman record?
-
Anybody heard the new Blonde Redhead yet?? I almost bought it on an impulse because it's only $7.99 at Best Buy, but I know absolutely nothing about the band and the last time I bought an album based on a whim it didn't work out too well.
-
I've only listened to it a few times so far, but I think it's the most exciting thing to come out of KRS since Deerhoof and the Decemberists. Unique, definitely.

I bought the new album from chevelle... i know not everyone here listens to major record label music... but damn that cd is really good....so far my favorite album this year...i also find it really cool that most of your guys DO buy cds, and not 0mg l0lz 1m 4 p1r4t3 L0LZORZ BUYING MUSIC IS FOR TEH N))BS... suporting your artists is important....

Lucky Soul- The Great Unwanted, is on my shortlist for the best record of 2k7 so far.
-
Has anyone heard the new Vintersorg or Throbbing Gristle?
-
I heard the new Throbbing Gristle, and thought 'Yeah, this is Throbbing Gristle. Wait, why am I listenning to this? This isn't what I usually go for...'
I heard it was great, but I didn't get it.
It's in a folder of albums I've either listened to once, or never. Things I haven't really listened to yet.
I think you'll love it if you're a fan, I've heard great things about it, but none of them are my own opinion.
-
Throbbing Gristle are a great band.
I did not know they released a new album though.
Sweeeeeeeet
-
Maybe this is beating a dead horse but I just pre-ordered the Neon Bible Double LP and I'm really excited. 'Funeral' sounds so wonderful on vinyl and I'm sure this one won't be any different. In fact, I think it's a 180g so it'll probably sound even better. Anyone else going to pick this up?
-
I just heard the new !!! album Myth Takes today for the first time. Must say i'm quite enjoying it.
-
I just heard the new !!! album Myth Takes today for the first time. Must say i'm quite enjoying it.
I could take or leave these guys prior to this record but I really, really like it.
-
I felt the same way until I got their cover of 'Take Ecstasy With Me.' Now I want Myth Takes really bad.
-
Panda Bear's new disc is tops for me thus far in 2007. Explosions in the Sky's new disc is pretty good, as is Do Make Say Think's. I like LCD Soundsystem's 2nd (excluding 45:33) much better than the first.
I'm disappointed in both the AF and *clap* YEAH! discs.
-
My top five so far this year looks something like this:
1. !!! - Myth Takes
2. The Psyke Project - Apnea
3. Longing for Dawn - A Treacherous Ascension
4. D?lek - Abandoned Language
5. Keen of the Crow - Hyborea
What I have heard off Feist - The Reminder is absolutely gorgeous bar some unremarkable ballads.
-
So Keen of the Crow is worth checking out? I've been busy and waffling on picking that one up.
-
Well, first let me say that it is nothing groundbreaking and it probably won't knock you off your feet. It is, however, good solid doom/death reminiscent of a simpler Opeth. Perhaps a bit long but quite enjoyable if you ask me. On a sidenote, it is most likely the only KofC album seeing as how the band has already disbanded.
-
New Dntel and Feist are gooooooooooood.
-
So far, my favourite albums of the year (I won't try for any order other than alphabetical for now):
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse
Boris with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow
Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
Feist - The Reminder
Frog Eyes - Tears Of The Valedictorian
Fugitives - In Streetlight Communication
Handsome Furs - Plague Park
Jesu - Conqueror
LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
Low - Drums and Guns
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position
Stars - Do You Trust Your Friends?
Those are all pretty superb, in my opinion, and there've been plenty of other good to great albums as well. All in all, it's looking to be a great year.
-
I just checked out the track listing for the new Stars album 'Do You Trust Your Friends?'. I want this album. Now.
-
New Dntel and Feist are gooooooooooood.
That Dntel remix of Feist was pretty good too... I don't like her much, tho.
I pre-ordered 'Dumb Luck', came with a nice bonus CD which has 4 long ambient tracks. Makes a great complement to the vocal-led album, and it's pretty unlike anything else he's done.

My favorite album of this year was defanantly "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" by Modest Mouse. I also liked "Friend Oppertunity," by Deerhoof. I think that Neon Bible was pretty good, but I liked Funeral better

Well, I feel a little bit better about my lack of albums from this year, then.
-
BUMP because I finally have more 2007 albums.
!!!- Myth Takes: Really god damn good. A huge step up from Louden Up Now in terms of songwriting and melody. Maybe it's not as danceable, but it's still more danceable than 99% of indie rock anyway.
Explosions in the Sky- All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone: Pretty good. I don't remember much from this album, but I'm subsequently listening to every EiTS release so they all form one long continuous album to me. I can't believe reviews of this album are longer than "mostly more of the same, but the same is still great."
Field Music- Tones of Town: A friend of mine was surprised that I enjoy this album because he said it seems too easy going and catchy for me. I dunno what to say, other than I don't understand why this album hasn't garnered more press coverage. If the Shins album left you a little cold and lacking your indie pop doseage for the year, give this one a try.
Modest Mouse- We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank: Not nearly as bad as I imagined, but still not even as good as Good News For People Who Love Bad News. There's something OFF about the whole thing: it's another long Modest Mouse album, but for the first time it feels TOO LONG; the difference between really good and really crap songs is more pronounced than ever; the best songs are the ones that stray from the established formula, but there aren't enough of those. At this point it's hard to recommend this album to anyone, since you're either new enough to Modest Mouse to have and love this already, or you've been with Modest Mouse too long to give a shit what they make anymore because they've already lost your interest. I'm somewhere in the middle but in a year with so many other, better albums, why waste time discussing this??
Of Montreal- Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?: I suspect that this album, along with Deerhoof's, will largely be forgotten on the end of year lists because they both came out so early in 2007. Nevertheless, Of Montreal have here produced arguably their best album yet. I heard all kinds of shit about how this was a break-up album, but all I've gotten off of it is that it's a very personal and direct album, lyrically; musically, it's rich, diverse, and pushes the band's sound into new, great places. I love The Sunlandic Twins but this may be better.
Panda Bear- Person Pitch: When people talk about warmth in music, this is the sort of thing they mean. There's a very tangible atmosphere/texture to the production on this album--maybe it's all the reverb--that give it a warm, comfortable quality. I'd just like to say that it's the closest aural approximation of being stoned I've ever heard, unintentional as it is. It's hypnotic because of, and despite, its repetitions, being that the album is built on top of loops. I'm not sure exactly how to qualify the album, other than it's really good and I can't stop listening to it.
Wilco- Sky Blue Sky: see thread I started about this. In short: it's really 70s, really good, and not much like YHF at all.
-
Turbonegro - Retox
It comes out next month. This has to be one of the best albums of 2007.
-
I haven't heard it and I don't think it's leaked yet but I'm really excited for the new Okkervil River album. It's called 'Stage Names' and comes out in August so I guess it will be leaking in the near future, most likely. Okkervil River is so very good so I'm logically really excited for this. Anyone else looking forward to it?
-
Gregs, the closest textural reference point I can come up with for that Panda Bear record is Brian Wilson. As a result I really love that album.

Sir, a very loud chorus of angels just landed in my room and they are in the process of hallelujah-ing.
-
As much as I'm loathe to admit it the new Mayhem album is really good, it's like Grand Declaration of War done properly, Atilla Csihar is the man.
-
Is that horribly fuzzy version that was doing the rounds a couple weeks ago the real thing, or was that a dodgy demo? 'cos I know black metal doesn't exactly shoot for squeaky-clean production but that shit was nigh-unlistenable :(
The new Grendel album is absolutely amazing, not sure about God Module yet (got hold of both of 'em at the same time) but the former is definitely a hell of a record. New Rupesh Cartel is solid too. Currently on the third disk of this (http://www.discogs.com/release/946797) and it's sounding mighty fine. Damn, but I'm loving 2007 for music.
-
Porcupine Tree's new album Fear of a Blank Planet is really, really great. The sound incorporates an interesting faster pace at times than previous albums, while still sticking to what the fans of the band love. Fantastic album.

That album kind of took me by surprise,I dont think I've ever listened to anything like it.
The Stylus (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/panda-bear/person-pitch.htm) review made me want to listen to that album in the first place.
-
Aaah, Blonde Redhead, how I love you. '23' is an awesome album which I have been listening to a bit repeatedly since I got it. Very good stuff. Perhaps one of the year's better releases?
-
I had 23 on my hard drive for like a month before I listened to it
It is okay.
It has nothing on Misery is a Butterfly.

The quantity of good music that's already out/leaked this year is scary. New albums by Eluvium, Do Make Say Think, Explosions in the Sky, They Shoot Horses Don't They?, !!!, Liars, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Mono, Panda Bear, The Shins, Of Montreal, The Six Parts Seven, Menomena, Stars of the Lid, Deerhoof, Amiina, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, LCD Soundsystem, Blond Redhead, Arctic Monkeys, 65daysofstatic, The Sea and Cake, The White Stripes, Art Brut, Spoon, Tarentel, Souveniers Young American, The Drift (remix album), Stars (remix/cover album), Fridge, Maserati, Grails, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Rob Crow, Cex, By the End of Tonight, Iron and Wine, Sybarite, Belong and others that I can't remember. The thing is, I really like all of these albums. A lot. And with new albums by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Radiohead, Super Furry Animals, The Go! Team, The Weakerthans, Beirut, The Avalanches, Animal Collective and maybe (but probably not) even a new Sigur Ros album! This could be the best music year of my life. In fact, I think it is.
-
I find that I cannot stop playing the new Art Brut album. I predict that there will not be a catchier song than "Post Soothing Out" released this year. That's a hook that just won't let go!
-

I love It's a Bit Complicated! It's definitely one of the most criminally underrated albums of the year. Up there with the new Parts & Labor and Shapes & Sizes.
-
Some people rate it: the Guardian gave it 5 out of 5 a couple of weeks ago.
-
i haven't heard much in 2007 to make me sit up and take notice.
-
Justice's album "†" just dropped out here and by the way that I am playing it from go to whoa over and over again I am pretty sure that barring major incidents it's gonna be my favourite non-compilation album this year. The Bang Gang's "Light, Sound, Dance" comp may beat it, we'll see a week from now when it's released.
-
i haven't heard much in 2007 to make me sit up and take notice.
Clearly you haven't been listening to a large number of releases this year or you have a very specific taste in music (since great albums in many genres are already out/on their way). There's been so many high quality releases this year that it really surprises me to hear anyone say that.
-
Yeah, 2007 is ridiculous so far. Every time I think I've got a break to go back and get into something older, another batch of awesome albums drops.
-
The new John Wiese album is loud.

most of what i've heard and like this year has been from 2005 or 2006.
and most of it has been from unsigned artists.
can you cite something from this year that you consider truly awesome?
-
Sure:
Copia is a brilliant new ambient release for composer Matthew Cooper AKA Eluvium. It's a truly beautiful album employing strings, brass, piano and effects to amazing ends. If you like ambient, the new Stars of the Lid is fantastic as well.
Do Make Say Think, Fridge, Grails, Explosions in the Sky, and Maserati have all released extremely good instrumental rock albums this year. The DMST album isn't their best but it shows an evolving sound, throws in some vocals, and has some terrific tracks. The Fridge album (1/3 of Fridge is Four Tet) is a great electronicey rock album, thier first in a long time a very nice follow up to their album Happiness. The Explosions in the Sky release is probably their best so far. Certainly it's their most epic. Grails use of some cool instrumental effects (seen live, these are very cool) and the uncommonly used 12 string guitar for a sitar like effect have crafted a really intense instrumental album in 'Burning Off Impurities' that shows that originality in this increasingly derivative post rock genre still exists. The New Maserati album is just good, high energy post rocking.
If more out there pop/rock/whatever music is more your games, the new Deerhoof is a lot of fun, the Deerhunter album Cryptograms and it's accompanying EP Fluorescent Gray are swampy, spacy and rewards lots of listens, the new Liars album has some really good tracks (and a few week ones) but is overall well worth listening to, even if Drum's Not Dead is better. Black Moth Super Rainbow's new album is electro-poppy and great with all sorts of vintage synths and keyboards and cool vocal manipulations. The new Menomena album is hard to define and while, again, it's not as good as their first, it's a really excellent album with a whole lot of originality.
For more "normal" sounding pop/rock stuff, the new Okkervil River has some really great songs (although Savannah Smiles may be their worst song to date) and has some great folk/country influences but in a very good way. The new New Pornographers is sugary pop goodness and quite possibly their best album yet. The new Iron and Wine is great and often more rocking than the very quiet nature of earlier releases. Finally, the new Arcade Fire is really bombastic and is some of the more epic indie rock I've heard.
Those are just some albums that I would consider truly awesome from this year.
-
so we pretty much have totally different tastes in music, then.
-
Ok, my (incomplete) list of decent releases this year:
- Amon Tobin, Foley Room
- The Arcade Fire, Neon Bible
- Architecture in Helsinki, Places like these
- Busdriver, Roadkillovercoat
- Justice, †
- Kavinsky's 1986 EP
- LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver
- Low's Drums & Guns isn't exactly 100% in my book, but it's pretty cool
- Mr Oizo's Transexual EP
- Ratatat's second remixes album
- SebastiAn's Ross Ross Ross promo EP
- Simian Mobile Disco, Attack Decay Sustain Release
If we're counting mixes then I could probably add a few more to that list, plus I am pretty sure one more after this weekend when the Bang Gang's Light, Sound, Dance is released.
It's been a pretty good year so far!
-
well, this came out this year (altho i had it as a promo copy sometime late last year):
Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f9/DeerhoofFriendOpportunity.jpg)
it's probably the only album that came out this year that i actually like ALL THE TIME.
-
I have it, but it underwhelmed me, unfortunately.
-
I have it, but it underwhelmed me, unfortunately.
ah well, to each their own.
-
oh, and everyone needs to buy this album:
Inverse Room - American Recluse
(http://cdbaby.name/i/n/inverseroom4.jpg)
Inverse Room is just a man: a song-writing man. He cannot fly, or communicate with the animals. He is not fluent in many languages, and is slightly afraid of the ladies. But when it's song-writing time, Inverse Room knows what to do.
Inverse Room is influenced by wind. He notices cars going by, and incorporates them into his songs. He is profoundly affected by rain, and mail. He doesn't like dogs a whole lot, but birds he digs. Trees move him deeply. He is indebted to clouds, pie, and chairs.
Inverse Room sounds like a little old lady swearing in Portugese. He sounds like subway tokens in the pocket of a marathon runner, back when there used to be subway tokens, and marathon runners used to take the subway. He sounds like frying bacon, and sand blowing against the side of a quonset hut. He sounds like a baby crying, especially if the baby is a timberwolf baby.

Huh. I thought it was an attempt to be even more mainstream than their last album, while making some small effort not to piss the fans off too badly. It was decent enough, but it's not really what I expected from them.
Portishead III will almost certainly not be out this year. However, the band will be performing the material live at All Tomorrow's Parties in December, so I'm sticking my oar in for it anyway. (Sadly, I do not have £250 to go see one act.)
-
Arcade Fire
Wolf Parade
Modest Mouse was a bit of a piss off but kinda expected.

I really cannot wait for all of that. I have a recording of 'Odin's Raven Magic' and it's amazing (although very unlike Sigur Ros). I've also heard the Hlemmur soundtrack and it's really quite good albeit a bit short (under 40 minutes).
