Overheard at a local show:
"Oh yeah? Well I liked TV On the Radio before I knew they were black."
Burn!
-
I did the same thing with The Dears and Bloc Party.
-
I found TV On the Radio's first EP right after it came out for a dollar at a local used book/CD store and bought it solely because of the label it was on, and it had a cool cover, and well, it was a DOLLAR. I'd never heard anything about them, and at the time I was like "This is so incredibly good, but I don't think too many people are going to dig industrial soul music".
Yeah, I was wrong.
And I still don't think their two albums have been as good as that EP, sadly.
-
That applies to a lot of bands.
-
Casual, jokey racism?? Yawn.

Uh, I don't think you get it.
The dis being that one might cynically think that some hipsters only like TV On the Radio so much because they're black.
-
No, I got it. It's just stupid, casual, jokey racism.

Explain to me how it is racist. The dis is saying "I like TV On the Radio because they are good; you like them to look more urban and relevant."
How is that racist?
-
It's not.
-
It'd be racist if I said something like "now I have another reason not to like them."
But really, I don't like them. And I didn't know they were black.
-
I heard a cover of Bowie's "Heroes" by Nico and thought, "Hm, the dude singing this has a weird voice." So... I liked Nico before I knew she was a girl.

Haha. The same thing happened in reverse when I heard Devendra Banhart. The pirate station I was a DJ at got a promo of his first album and before I read the press kit, I listened to it and thought "This is one weird chick."
-
I also used to think Joanna Newsom was like eight.

I liked Cat Power before I knew she was really hot

I liked Cat Power before I knew she was really hot
First time I saw JN years back in a tiny bar in Brixton I was so drunk I nearly asked for her phone number.
I really should have asked for her phone number.
Interestingly enough, I have Cat Power's phone number. I befriended her after a show she played in '98 and we've stayed in touch ever since.
-
Tommy has you beaten.
-
Meh, fuck that woman.
I want to hear the story!
-
I think we all do.
-
No, I got it. It's just stupid, casual, jokey racism.
ScrambledGregs: What? I didn't understand the sentence at first but I assume it's racist! Eh? What's that you say? It's not racist? Well, I knew that, but I'm still calling it racist.
Greg, you are a laugh.
-
At first I read it like "I liked TV On The Radio...before I heard they were black."
As in he stopped liking them because of their blackioscityness
Then I realized I read it wrong. Right Greg? Did I read it wrong Greg? GREG

This thread is an abortion that survived.

Isn't wanting to get it on with a gelfling kinda dirty?

A beautiful human being with a really horrible singing voice, the production of which makes her look like a caricatured retard when she sings.
-
What?
-
Should post the Laibach version to aid comprehension. Know your audience.

Holy shit, Tommy is me as of 10 years ago!
Amazing.
-
Tommy you rule for liking bourbon, I can think of no finer spirit save for scotch.
-
OK guys here's why I thought it was racist. I missed the italics in the phrase. I thought he was saying something like "I liked the band before I knew they were black", as in, "once I found out they were black I stopped liking them."
-
Why are thre so little metal bands with black people in them I wonder...
-
Reams have been written on the subject. It's culture. You get less black metalheads, and so less black people in metal bands. It's not active discrimination inside the metal scene, apart from a very few people, so much as people just not being interested.
-
I think Troll showed gabbly a metal band from Botswana once. They weren't very good though.

That's what I said you read! <3333333333

I totally glazed over your post, and for that I am eternally sorry. ETERNALLY.
-
A better question would be "Why are there so few black metalheads/indie rockers/industrial musicians/etc"? I mean, plenty of white people like hip-hop, so why doesn't the door swing both ways? I can count on two hands the number of black people I've seen at non hip-hop shows, and I've been to a fuckton of shows.
Is there even one example of a black country singer?
-
Yep, Charley Pride.
I think these kinds of things are too big, too confusing, and involve too many different factors to ruminate about on a message board / forum / whatever.

I LOVE HICK-HOP
-
I think Nevermore's drummer is black. I might be making that up though.
-
There's black peeps scattered about the metal scene.
As I was trying to say, you more have to go up to black people and be like WHY DON'T YOU LIKE METAL!!!??? Than go up to metalheads and be like WHY DON'T YOU LIKE BLACK PEOPLE!?
-
I think accusing metal of being racist for not having black people is like accusing rap music of being racist for not having white people. It's kind of silly and shortsighted.
And Eminem doesn't count.

Sage Francis
or is he technically hip hop? I am stupid and do not know the difference. Either way, the same race thing applies. Sage Francis is white in a black-dominated genre, and he's good stuff.

Atmosphere (Slug), El-P, Remedy, Classified, Eyedea and Abilities, Aesop Rock, etc.

I liked The Decemberists before I knew that they made music.

Niiiice hey_ther_fatty..This thread is very interesting...I'm going watch before I make a witty response to anything .
Though I did see some PERSON quoting the post above them...wtf...

So what you are saying is, METAL : HIP HOP :: HOCKEY : BASKETBALL
-
I liked The Decemberists before I knew that they made music.
I liked Ladytron before I knew that Mira Aroyo is Bulgarian.
