-
I shall not share my wooing mix secrets!
-
To quote my ex boyfriend "every mix for a girl requires one Billie Holiday song."
-
Why is he your ex-boyfriend again?
-
We need not bring that up again, Joseph. My heart, she still aches.
-
The Beatles- In My Life
The Cure- Love Song
-
Pick one to include to suit your lady's tastes.
"Uptown Girl" - Billy Joel
"Dear Prudence" - The Beatles

-
I'm The Man Who Loves You - Wilco
-
Girlfriend - Matthew Sweet
...and yes i've been playing Guitar Hero 2
-
"Ultimatum" by The Long Winters. Preferably the EP version with gorgeous strings and acoustic guitar.
"Summer of '91" by ...Trail of Dead if you want them to go "WOAH MY EARS, DOES VOLUME = LOVE?"
"Playground Love" by Air.
"So Here We Are" OR "Blue Light [Engineers Remix]" by Bloc Party.
"First Day Of My Life" by Bright Eyes.
"You're So Pretty" by Brakes.
"She's The One," "Thunder Road" or "Born To Run" by Bruce Springsteen.
"Love You Madly" by Cake.
"Burn 2 Ash" by Chad VanGaalen.
"St. You" by The Constantines.
"Valentine" by Delays. Seriously. What a great song.
"At The Hop" by Devendra Banhart.
Ask E. Spaceman for some Motown tunes. They're great.
I'm cutting the list off there because the temptation to go through every single inch of my music library is too great.
Also, Kyros, that song is indeed great for this kinda thing.
-
personally for love i always go i wish that i was beautiful for you by darren hanlon
-
I usually try and throw in any old-time-y tune as an opening track to any great mix like this. My usual favorites include:
(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher- Jackie Wilson
Uptight (Everything's All Right)- Stevie Wonder
Music! Music! Music! - Teresa Brewer (totally good for any music fan)
Buttons and Bows- Dinah Shore (although this one is more for a girl giving a mix to a guy... still a cute song)
ABC- Jackson 5
Happiness is You- Johnny Cash
Something like that.
-
Don't forget to finish it with "Sex Bomb"!
-
Here are songs that are good songs.
Afghan Whigs- Gentleman
Ryan Adams- Gonna Make You Love Me
Beck- Golden Age
Bright Eyes- Method Acting
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Death Cab For Cutie- Tiny Vessels
eels- Selective Memory
Gram Parsons- Streets of Baltimore
Broken Social Scene- Lover's Spit
Magnetic Fields- I Thought You Were My Boyfreind
Marissa Nadler- Famous Blue Raincoat
Crooked Fingers- Carrion Doves
My Bloody Valentine- Only Shallow
Postal Service- Nothing Better
Rilo Kiley- Glendora
Uncle Tupelo- If thats alright
Jawbreaker- Sluttering
The Beatles-Norwegian Wood
If you send her that mix exactly, she will love you forever.
-
I don't know about all those songs, but I know Nothing Better is about two people who broke up... I guess the Gibbard part is romantic in a regretful sort of way, but the Jenny Lewis part talks about how much of a fuckup the guy was. And Glendora is about some guy that fucks around with her and forces her into a three way or something weird like that. Unless there's some hidden lyrical message I missed... and the Magnetic Fields song is about his gay lover that screwed him over completely.
Mr. Furious Wombat, do not listen to this man!!!
(ok, that last part was a joke, but seriously, I dont know about most of those ones...)
-
plus I wouldn't put Nebraska on there, I mean I guess it's a little romantic, but it's more about ... you know killing people and being executed and what not.
-
How about some Lightning Bolt?!
No? Okay uh right now the only thing coming to mind is Voxtrot - The Start of Something
-
Apoptygma Berzerk -Kathy's Song
Aztec Camera - Oblivious
The Mission UK - Stay With Me
Blackbox Recorder - These are the Things
The Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon
Leonard Cohen - Dance Me to the End of Love
The Magnetic Fields - It's Only Time
The Damned - Sanctum Sanctorum
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Are You The One that I've Been Waiting For?
David Bowie - Strangers When We Meet
also by Bowie - I Would Be Your Slave
The The - Uncertain Smile
-
HEY GUYS I THINK MR. KATZ MAY HAVE BEEN 'JOKING'.
-
There's a song we played on my station a lot last year that I took a lot of guilty pleasure in.
It's called "When Did You Fall?" (or something very similar to that) by Chris Rice. It's pop, but it has this nice old-timey romance quality to it. I honestly think I'd like it played at my wedding. Maybe. I'm a total sap.
-
HEY GUYS I THINK MR. KATZ MAY HAVE BEEN 'JOKING'.
yeah, after everone else commented, and I got some sleep, I caught on. Rats.
-
To quote my ex boyfriend "every mix for a girl requires one Billie Holiday song."
that's pretty much true. or Louis Armstrong. Billie or Louis. i would recommend "La Vie un Rose" by Louis Armstrong.
also:
Light Up My Room - Barenaked Ladies
I'll Be Your Man - The Black Keys
Stickshifts and Safetybelts - Cake
Lips like Sugar - Echo and the Bunnymen
When U Love Somebody - Fruit Bats (yes, i know it uses U instead of You, but it's still good)
I Walk the Line - Johnny Cash (or there's a cover of it sung by a girl, but i don't know who it is.)
Soundtrack for Our Movie - Mae
Run - Snow Patrol
Apple Blossom - The White Stripes
-
Eels - My Beloved Monster
Eels - Jeannie's Diary
Eels - Fresh Feeling
Eels - To Lick Your Boots
Eels - Sweet Li'l Thing
Eels - I Want To Protect You
-
I've actually been working on one of these as well, other than the afformentioned Girlfriend - Matthew Sweet, i've come up with these too:
Poison Cup - M. Ward
Funny Little Frog - Belle & Sebastian
Think I'm In Love - Beck
I'm the Man Who Loves You - Wilco
You're Pretty Good Looking(For a Girl) - The White Stripes, Apple Blossom works well too.
-
Afghan Whigs- Gentleman
I second this.
-
This is the mix I'm making for my boyfriend:
God Blessed the Broken Road : Rascal Flatts - Mostly because he likes country music and this is just too sappy not to have on a Valentine's mix.
The Saga Begins : Weird Al - This one is because he loves Star Wars. Maybe you should try to put something on your girlfriend's mix that reflects what she likes as well.
Starlight : Muse - Just a good one.
Walk the Line : Johnny Cash - Because my boyfriend is a lot better person than I am.
Desperado : Eagles - We just both like this song.
Baby Got Back : Sir Mix-a-lot - He likes big butts, specifically my big butt.
Amazed : Lonestar - Once again, a country song that he will enjoy.
More Than Words : Frankie J. - He talks too much when we are making out, thus this song. (Just kidding.)
Here Comes the Sun : The Beatles - I just think he would like this one.
Somebody to Love : Queen - Pretty obvious.
Baby It?s Fact : Hellogoodbye - I don't make a mixed CD without a Hellogoodbye song.
Everything : Alanis Morrisette - Because he puts up with me.
I Will Follow You Into the Dark : Death Cab For Cutie - I just really like this song.
You?re So Damn Hot : OK Go - Because he's freaking hot.
Slide Along : Oasis - Anything Oasis is good, Wonderwall would be a good substitute here.
Goodbye My Lover : James Blunt - He is going in the Navy, and I'm really going to miss him, plus it's a great song to end with.
-
Everyone putting "I'm the man who loves you" on their mixes should know 1. that song is about his son and you are all creepy. and 2. you have no imagination. seriously show some subtlety
-
yes its overly cheesy, but I feel like it works with what you have already, so I'm going to have to say Mineral- Loveletter Typewriter
-
How about some Lightning Bolt?!
i think if i wanted to break up with her i would burn 'Dracula Mountain' onto a cd about 12 times and give her that with 'this makes me think of you' written on the disc. actually....i should remember that just in case.
-
Funny Little Frog - Belle & Sebastian
...is about a pinup that he comes home to because his real girl left him.
If you're going to go with Wilco, I'd go with "Reservations" (I know, it's huge, whatever - find a live version or something), "Wishful Thinking" or "Poor Places." Maybe "Box Full Of Letters" or "Shot In The Arm." Kieff's right about "I'm The Man Who Loves You" being a bad idea - not so much because of the son thing, but because it's about as subtle as a brick to the face.
-
This is so much harder when Valentines day is like 2 weeks into the relationship... :-/
-
tis very true. my situation isn't so bad, we'll have been going out for a little over a month at that point. luckily we went on dates/hung out/talked a lot and had mutual feelings for a while before it was official or w/e so it's technically been longer. buut the mix is close to being finalized and is mostly semi to quite cheesey love songs but this will be in addition to other cds so i don't think it will be too over the top. still...it's a fine line to walk (not to mention a stupid fucking holiday to begin with).
-
Have you said "I love you" yet? I think thats my threshhold for nearly every love song I can think of.
Also: Hendrix's "Love or Confusion" is a terrible song to include on one of these, right?
-
Okay here we go.
Belle and Sebastion - If She Wants Me
The Bank Holidays - Like A Piano
Boy Least Likely To - I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon To Your Star
-
Lady- Styx
And
Fistfull Of Love- Antony and the Johnsons
That's two songs I've got so far to put on the mix I'm doing.
-
i guess for a certain type those would work. but stylistically they're waaaaaay off for my mix.
geh, this is far more time consuming than it should be.
-
Belle and Sebastion - If She Wants Me
That's more like it.
-
I decided to make a mix myself just out of sheer boredom. It goes as follows:
"Uptown Girl" - Billy Joel
"In The Still Of The Night" - The Five Satins
"Little Martha" - The Allman Brothers Band
"Here Comes The Sun" - The Beatles
"Glosoli" - Sigur Ros
"No Reply" - Seatbelts
"Run" - Snow Patrol
"Eleanor Put Your Boots" - Franz Ferdinand
"#9 Dream" - John Lennon
"Take Me Home, Country Roads" - John Denver
"Timorous Me" - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
"Francene" - ZZ Top
"Dance The Night Away" - Van Halen
I'm half tempted to actually give it to someone but put "Cats On Mars" by the Seatbelts right after "Glosoli" just because I'm a horrible person.
-
so after many hours i managed to throw together a rather epic mix here. 20 songs, 74 minutes. they're almost all in the fairly cheesy love song category. please don't bash my music taste for this mix. as i said, it's for my gf and it's for valentine's day so overly sweet is almost a prerequisit. i took several song suggestions from you guys too so thanks a bunch.
sleepwalking- Mr. Bear
Jellybones- The Unicorns
A.M. 180- Grandaddy
Passenger Seat- Death Cab for Cutie
This Modern Love- Bloc Party
So Happy Together- The Turtles
If it Were Up to Me- Rooney
Prove My Love- Violent Femmes
Popular Mechanics for Lovers- Beulah
Love Song- The Cure
Yellow- Coldplay
Do You Remember- Jack Johnson
On Peak Hill- Stars
Run- Snow Patrol
Transatlanticism- Death Cab for Cutie
The Grand Parade- The Reindeer Section
Such Great Heighs- The Postal Service
Better Together- Jack Johnson
Half Dead- Mountain Goats
First Day of My Life- Bright Eyes
this is probably the final list....
-
Get rid of that Rooney song before the good bands on that mix die of embarassment.
-
haha, to tell you the truth i was listening through the mix and i was seriously considering taking that song, and that song alone, off the mix. i didn't at the time but now that you mention it also i think i might reconsider.
-
This Ben Folds song, its called "Don't Change Your Plans"
-
The girl will be much more impressed if you only use each artist ONCE.
-
In no particular order:
"Hold Me Now" or "Soldier Girl" - The Polyphonic Spree
"Clementine" - The Decemberists
"Jenny" - I'm From Barcelona
"Naked as We Came" - Iron & Wine
"A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" - The Manhattan Transfer
"Streets of Fire" - The New Pornographers
"Girls Don't Cry" - the pillows
"A Comet Appears" - The Shins
"Agaetis Byrjun" - Sigur Ros
-
"Agaetis Byrjun" - Sigur Ros
The best part about these guys is the fact that absolutely nobody will understand what they're actually saying (excepting Icelanders, of course, and some of their songs are entirely in Hopelandic, too). They could easily be talking about how they enjoy clubbing baby seals and we'd all be none the wiser just because the music's just so darn purdy ^__^
-
But the even nicer part is that regardless of what they are saying it is still always beautiful to make out to.
-
The boy I used to make out with insisted on GY!BE. It was intense!
That looks like a pretty good mix! The best one I ever got was one with a bunch of 60's psych bands and quirky little Scottish twee groups.
-
so i thought about it and some of what you guys have said seems pretty right so i've revised the list a bit.
heres what i have now. revisions are in bold, where i had two songs for one artist i know only have one song per artist:
sleepwalking- Mr. Bear
Jellybones- The Unicorns
A.M. 180- Grandaddy
This Modern Love- Bloc Party
So Happy Together- The Turtles
We Both Go Down Together- The Decemberists
Prove My Love- Violent Femmes
Popular Mechanics for Lovers- Beulah
Love Song- The Cure
Yellow- Coldplay
On Peak Hill- Stars
Run- Snow Patrol
Transatlanticism- Death Cab for Cutie
The Grand Parade- The Reindeer Section
Such Great Heighs- The Postal Service
Better Together- Jack Johnson
Half Dead- Mountain Goats
Glosoli- Sigur R?s (i'm worried this one won't go over well but i think i'll give it a try)
First Day of My Life- Bright Eyes
-
We Both Go Down Together- The Decemberists
No, don't. It's about suicide. Not a good message.
-
it's pyramus and thisbe/romeo and juliet-ish and i know what it's about but i don't think the lyrics will be overly analyzed. it's fuckin romantic (kinda twisted thematically but romantic). plus i want to put a decemberists song on but idk what other one i could pick. clementine feels too slow almost.
EDIT:
on second thought, maybe you're right....damn.
EDIT:
Yankee Bayonet? death won't seperate us and all that/i'll find a way to get home/cold mountainish (obviously an inspiration).
a better choice?
-
Nah, stay away from The Decemberists. You pretty much can't get a love song that's not filled with death.
-
Glosoli- Sigur Ros (i'm worried this one won't go over well but i think i'll give it a try)
Depends on how she is with music. If she's the kind of person who really gets into the mood a song sets, it will absolutely be perfect.
It also depends on her tastes, too. If she doesn't like heavily-distorted guitars (or does like the ending but doesn't want the long wait for it), don't go for this song. Instead go for "Hoppipolla." Short, sweet, perfectly timed. I ended up switching "Glosoli" out on my mix for it. Go back and listen and see how it fits if you really want to be sure of it.
Anyway, keep tweaking it as you see fit, and *always* check lyrics. Pretty melodies that end up being about cheating are aaaalways a terrible idea. And don't be afraid to add a few faster songs. Life ain't always a slow dance. ^__^
