It's very clear that you are new to these forums, because you clearly are looking for some sort of validation.
Whatever, off the top of my head:
Fugazi
Sonic Youth
Polvo
At the Drive-In
Propagandhi
Jethro Tull
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Pixies
Drive Like Jehu
Dinosaur Jr
-
Tommy, you forgot Wet Wet Wet!
-
Well, I'll go for this. In no order:
1. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
2. Wilco
3. Joy Division
4. Weezer
5. The Beatles
6. Pink Floyd
7. Hope of the States
8. Blur
9. blink-182
10. Hundred Reasons
By the way; I am actually going to rape you for liking Babyshambles.
-
What is it with you and rape?
-
Steve from Blues Clues
He actually has an album out and one in the process. Steve Drozd plays drums for him, and Dave Fridmann is his producer. I can't make up shit this wacky if I tried.
I did know that actually, I just don't take it seriously because it's a competent but not amazing album.
-
What is it with you and rape?
RAPEZ LOL

1. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

sigur ros
mono
mogwai
neutral milk hotel

eluvium
the decemberists
joanna newsom
-
OMGZ DUDE!
A great deal of the music by both Blur and Weezer is as literate, eclectic and varied as Joy Division, Pink Floyd and Nick Cave.
In fact, I'd say that Blur have a lot more variety than Joy Division for certain.
But feel free to splutter at blink-182; they are a guilty, shameless pop pleasure for me.
-
This may or may not be in order. Don't get offended.
Pixies
Neutral Milk Hotel
Modest Mouse
The Velvet Underground
The Decemberists
The Who
The Beatles
Belle and Sebastian
Spoon
The Clash
-
I actually like early Blur and Weezer's second album, but... Weezer as varied as Pink Floyd? Dude. I think you need to listen to Piper and Meddle again.
-

I wasn't saying that both of them were all three compared to all three.
-
1 Skyclad (Best lyrics ever, witty, satirical, human, eccentric Skyclad is everything I love about Britain as an anti-nationalist)
2 Sol Invictus (Incredible atmosphere, and again, brilliant lyrics, this time just hitting like a punch to the stomach)
3 Current 93 (Intricate personal mythology creates a fascinating and illuminating journey through beautiful soundscapes)
4 Edge of Sanity (One of the most innovative and under-rated metal bands of all time. DAN SWANO IST KRIEEEG!)
5 Coil (Gayer than Elton John sitting on a wedding cake, more experimental than William Burroughs turning Einsteins brain in to a cut-up poem)
6 Inkubus Sukkubus (My guilty pleasure? Ecstatic pagan goth rock. I don't really know why I like them so much, but I just DO)
7 Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows (A tortured, strange human heart opened up in music. Beautiful)
8 Agalloch (Post everything, a drift of smoke through dead forests, a leaf-strewn path of bones, the ultimate apocalyptic music)
9 Death in June (Layers of occult metaphor and meaning woven over some of the catchiest hooks and drum beats ever written)
10 Ewigkeit (Pure insanity, bought to you by one man and his basement, live from the doors of perception. I want to meet James Fogarty so badly.)
...possibly. But there's lots of worrying ommissions from that where I just can't remove another band. I can't believe Bathory, My Dying Bride, Ancient Rites or Pink Floyd aren't up there.
-
I can't believe you put Current 93 on and NOT The Legendary Pink Dots.
-
Hmm I think I could narrow it down to 10.
First and foremost.
Phish - Pure musical heaven.
Now everything else in no real order.
Pink Floyd - mostly for the Animals album.
Primus - As a young bassist they turned me to the world outside of punk.
Rage Against the Machine - Just excellent.
The Frog Brigade - This band is like the band to end all bands, awesome jams, Claypool, Eenor, Skerik. What more do you need?
The Living End - Ive seen these guys so many times and I still love them.
Yes - Especially the Rick Wakeman albums.
Mogwai - I only got into these guys in the last 6 months but I'm hooked.
Trey Anastasio's solo work.
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Bela Fleck and Vic Wooten in the one band. Oh, whats this FUTUREMAN. I think yes. (Going to see them in April)
Thats mine.
-
whats wrong with the babyshambles?
-
Other people don't like them and those people believe themselves to be cooler than the people who do like them.
-
Why "bands"?
-
Inkubus Sukkubus
Fuck I thought I was the only one who had ever heard of these guys. A friend of mine used to be pretty into them... Any reccomendations, All I've heard is parts of "Vampyre Erotica"...
-
Kyuss
Dead Meadow
OM
Acid Mothers Temple
13th Floor Elevators
Love
Donovan
Ramona Cordova
Jack Rose
Masters of Reality
I've been on a Super Furry Animals kick recently, though.
-
I can't believe you put Current 93 on and NOT The Legendary Pink Dots.
I like the Legendary Pink Dots. I like hundreds of bands. I just prefer those ten.
@Scytale: I'm going to be brutally honest, most of their stuff is pretty samey. On an intellectual level I just should not like them, at least not as much.
-
Pixies (Ridiculously consistent, perfect song writing, Surfer Rosa might be better mixed than any album ever)
Deerhoof (I love how they can write a great pop hook as well as they can dismantle one. They're one of the few bands that make me laugh with glee at their surprises)
David Bowie (What the hell am I supposed to say?)
Kraftwerk (Well electronic music would barely exist without them. Their work manages to be transcendent while encapsulating post-war cultural shifts)
Can (Krautrock legends, another band that makes me laugh without telling jokes. The weirdest act on this list)
The Field Mice (This band will probably never be on any official "greatest" lists. The were the top act on Sarah records which only put out singles- that doesn't really give you legend status. The singles aren't even THAT incredible, they're special for me though.)
My Bloody Valentine (Believe it or not Loveless isn't the only thing they good they put out. But yeah... that album)
The Fugees (One album. But its the best hip hop album ever- they manage to have excellent production to match the best rhymes of the 90's)
Q and Not U (post-hardcore from my home city. Partly dance punk without all the terrible things that dance punk became, partly beautiful guitar melodies and solid drumming that all fits perfectly)
Yo La Tengo (Consistent, superb noise pop (if you haven't noticed I have a thing for that sub genre)
-
1. The Beatles (lyrics...sheer volume and variety of really great music)
2. Led Zepplin (Amazing...just amazing.)
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers (Sometimes fun and sometimes soulful.
4. Miles Davis (Phenominal and brilliant improvisationalist)
5. John Colhtrane (where Davis was cool Colhtrane had heart)
6. Bob Dylan (Amazing lyrics and an addictive voice
7. Pixies (Great just great
8. Architecture in Helsinki(damned if I know why...its really different from what I normally listen to)
9. Beastie Boys (they are so damn fun to listen to)
10. Gilberto Gil or Baden Powell i think...its tough.
-
The Decemberists (This is mostly because of Castaways and Cutouts. The combination of the lyrics and thesound they had back then just floors me. Their other albums have their moments too.)
My Bloody Valentine (Mostly because of Loveless, but I like how that sound on that album was developed over time)
Menomena (They have a unique sound and do it well)
Nick Drake (A great musician and songwriter)
M. Ward (he has a fantastic voice)
Architecture in Helsinki
Andrew Bird
Vetiver
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Arcade Fire
-
I think I can only give you my top four.
1) Talking Heads
2) Huey Lewis & The News
3) Genesis
4) Whitney Houston

Dude, Iggy Pop's not a band.
-
Fixed for technicality
-
Dude, Iggy Pop's not a band.
So wait, this thread was ONLY about music made by groups of people?? Doesn't that necessarily eliminate a lot of people from our lists??
-
Not to mention that plenty of groups are really just one person's vision and compositions.
-
This is probably a mix of "right now" and "ever ever ever" but here you are:
David Bowie
Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum
Pavement
Pulp
The Pixies
The Smiths
Architecture in Helsinki
Blonde Redhead
T. Rex
The Unicorns
I already want to edit it again. A top 15 might be easier, or a top 5. Sigh.
-
1. Led Zep
2. Pink Floyd
3. Metallica
4. System of a Down
5. Megadeth
6. Chili Peppers
7. Black Label Society
8. R.E.M.
9. Pantera
10. Dragonforce

Hooray! So very happy am I!
-
The Stooges
The Doors
Bruce Springsteen (& The E Street Band for all you picky "bands only" people)
Wolf Parade
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Owls
Wilco
Massive Attack
Stars
Sonic Youth
Weezer was close to making this list, and definately would've if it weren't for Make Believe. If I was judging them based on their first three or four albums, they'd be top five, I'm fairly sure.
Oh, and of course, there's no order to the list, and it's subject to change.
-
I'm not the one who said this thread was for top 10 bands, guys. Bob Dylan would have been high in my list otherwise.
To Dark Flame: you'd judge Weezer on the first four??? I judge them on the first two and the deluxe edition of the first one...
-
The first two albums are two of my favourites of all time, easily. In fact, I'd say Pinkerton is a strong contender for my absolute favourite album. I also really love the third. It's not nearly as excellent, but it's still a great pop album. The fourth is still good, though not amazing, it's not a bad mark on them.
-
I wish Weezer had somehow changed frontmen after Pinkerton so we could argue over who was a better frontman ala Van Halen, making Weezer's current semi-wholesale theft of the Van Halen logo for their own use all the more pertinent. Are you a Diamond Dave or Sammy man?? More importantly, are you a Rivers Cuomo or Evan Dando man??
-
Right now:
REM
New Order
Wilco
Neutral Milk Hotel
Belle and Sebastian
The Kinks
Fugazi
Mogwai
The Beatles
The Velvet Underground
-
OMGZORZ, Guys, you're forgetting Slint! Okay, maybe I'm not enoug of a forumite yet to start that joke up again. How about this list, which is in no particular order as I've decided not to put any thought into it.

Deerhoof
Animal Collective
Blonde Redhead
David Bowie
Velvet Underground
Pixies
Broken Social Scene
Neutral Milk Hotel

That's about the best list of 10 I can compile without looking at any of my CDs or mp3s. Manja.
-
Guys, you're forgetting Slint! Okay, maybe I'm not enoug of a forumite yet to start that joke up again.
Joke?
-
Well, it's sort of a half joke. Most of us do in fact love Slint.
-
OMGZORZ, Guys, you're forgetting Slint!

Slint had one highly influential but questionably great album and one rather bad album that nobody listens to. I don't think I have ever seen anyone say they were one of the best bands of all time based on that extremely limited output.
I have a problem putting Neutral Milk Hotel that high for the same reason - sure, Jeff and co. made two great albums, but does that really make them a "great band of all time" compared to artists who have done 10, 20, 30, 40+ great albums? I think quantity and diversity of output should factor in it somewhere. At least it does for me, which is why I had to give it up for Tom Waits the the Legendary Pink Dots.
-

yes. yes it does.

and an EP that was better than either of them.
-
The EP was alright, but I'd say less people have heard that than even Tweez.
-
My tastes are pretty random (not in order):
1. Bob Dylan
2. Explosions in the Sky
3. Neil Young
4. The Beatles
5. Nickel Creek
6. Modest Mouse
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers
8. The Offspring
9. Pink Floyd
10. Leather Addiction
-
GUYS JOHNNY WAS BEING FUNNY.
YOU DIDN'T CATCH THAT?
SRSLY.
I like all my music equally. Top 10s are lame.
-
I feel validated! This is what life is for.
-
I know Johnny was kidding. My response was more in response to the new guy's apparent attempt to be humorous by referencing something that I've never actually seen happen.
-
Yes but what you failed to realize is that American Psycho is always comic gold.
-
this is going to freaking hard..
Sigur Ros
Jesu
Metallica
Isis
Jars of Clay
My Bloody Valentine
Meshuggah
Neurosis
Explosions in the Sky
The Angelic Process
-

Yes because In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is the only non-bowie album I would put in my "best albums of all time" list and that's saying a fuckload for me. So...yes.
-
In a very vague descending order.
Manic Street Preachers
David Bowie
Bauhaus
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Placebo
Ween
The Sisters of Mercy
KMFDM

Beetles
They're crunchy.

If you have not yet listened to Boris' Pink, I think you may find it is the greatest thing you have ever heard, based on your tastes.
And yes, tommy. Tweez is a bad album. It grates on my nerves.
-
As much as I like Pink, I still think Akuma No Uta was better.
-
The new Boris album, the one with Michio Kurihara, sounds like it will be better than Pink.
Akuma No Uta is good, but it doesn't have that... something... that Pink does.
-
10 Ewigkeit (Pure insanity, bought to you by one man and his basement, live from the doors of perception. I want to meet James Fogarty so badly.)
Funny enough I had been plugging Ewigkeit for a very very very long fucking time. Since I've always loved his work. Although everywhere I posted about him... people told me it was the worst thing they had heard in many years, now all of a sudden he's huge and all the kiddies like him. I'm so fucking confused.
Anyway top bands.
Vintersorg
Solefald
Arcturus
Borknagar
Ayreon
Therion
UneXpect
Lost Horizon
Blind Guardian
Wintersun
One major problem is.... I actually don't listen to half thos ebands much anymore, but they;re my top bands on lastfm.
The only bands on that list who I listen to regularly is Vintersorg, Solefald, Arcturus, Borknagar and Ayreon.
The others are just... I dunno, I listened to them a lot years ago, now I'm bored.
-
Lose the image sig, doggtown. We do not like those round these parts.
-
Slint had one highly influential but questionably great album and one rather bad album that nobody listens to.
'Tweez' is a bad album
you should have left it at that

Branded Women
Cleaning Women

Jason Webley
Cradle Of Filth

And yes, tommy. Tweez is a bad album. It grates on my nerves.
I've got about 20 or so Boris albums. My favourite one is probably Flood, or Sun Baked Snow Cave (their collaboration with Merzbow). Pink is good.
Also, I would like to mention how damn awesome the Angelic Process is. If you like, Shoegaze, Noise, Metal, or good music in general, get their album Coma Waering. One of the best albums ever, although no one seems to have heard of it.
-
now all of a sudden he's huge and all the kiddies like him. I'm so fucking confused.
Where are all these kids then? I hardly know anyone who's even heard of Ewigkeit. They have 1,135 unique listeners on last.fm, and, let me tell you, that is not very many at all. Four times as many people listen to Theatres Des Vampires. I've been listening to him for two and a half years now, discovered them completely at random off an Earache sampler CD on an issue of Terrorizer the month before Radio Ixtlan was released. I tend to get very good reactions from people when I play them his stuff, especially off the last two albums. But he's so obscure, especially now he quit Earache, that people rarely seem to bother following it up. It's a shame really. 'Conspiritus' could have been fucking huge if it had been promoted right.
If you've been on it for a while, your last.fm top list tends to come to represent what you've been listening to longest, not what you like most.
-
I know nothing of the band Ewigkeit, but I'd just like to say it's one of my favorite German words.
I also like ausgezeichnet, because it sounds funny when you say it.
-

You're such a liar, Mrs. Claudio Sanchez.
-
god damn, i can usely make it around the top 5, but then i all falls apart.
#1: Led Zeppelin - undisputed
#2: Robin Trower - best guitarist ever, fuckin' loud live
#3: LadyTron - i am overly obsessed with this band
#4: The Cult - the most under rated band to ever come out of the 80's (Guadicanal Diary could fight for that title to)
#5: Gorillaz - the funky uniqueness draws me in like no other
#6: David Bowie - prolly the most talented vocalist i can think of
#7: R.E.M. - i have no idea why but i love them
#8: Stars - the music is so eloquent that it could bring tears
#9: The Muggs - a Detroit local band, absolutly 100% arena rock (also there is a very amazing backstory to this power trio)
#10: Tragically Hip - just pure rock
Honorable metions:
Pink Floyd
Arcade Fire
Secret Machines
Maximo Park
Ratt
Tesla
Tenacious D
Spoon
Massive Attack
-
I'll probably want to change this as soon as I post, but I'll give it a shot:
Voivod
Thought Industry
Cynic
Cocteau Twins
Porcupine Tree
Death
Meshuggah
Area (the 70's Italian band, not the more recent U.S. one, although they're cool too)
Genesis
Mew
and to be honest, you could probably switch some of the bands out for these
Antonio Carlos Jobim
Steve Reich
Anekdoten
Landberk
Os Mutantes
Henry Cow
Slowdive
decision making isn't one of my strong points
edit: (5 seconds later) and Magma! I fucking knew that would happen.
-
Hmmm..I cant put these in order, but I can give an explanation to there awesomeness.
Frank Zappa. Progressive electric rock in the time of disco, british punk and glam metal? Sign me up!
Elvis Costello. I always appreciate an artist that is prolific as he is insightful and brilliant.
Electric Light Orchaestra. Combining catchy rock riffs and orchaestral flair, they have me successfully hooked. Doesnt help that im a sucker for concept albums, i.e Eldorado.
Pink Floyd. How can a self respecting rocker not have these guys on their list of all timers? R.I.P Syd.
Victor Wooten. Ever wondered what flaminco would sound like on an electric bass? Listen to this guy and youll find out.
Tsutchie. I usually dont like hip hop, but the idea of a japanese hip hop artist got me intrigued, and now I cant stop listening.
Men at Work. Once you get past the "Land Down Under" 80's pop sound, youll realize that Colin is an incredible songwriter.
Visual Audio Sensory Theater (I know its VAST, but I love saying all that). Its a guilty pleasure of mine; the concept of emo metal has me giddy.
Peter Gabriel. Its odd that anyone can have a pop sound and following, but still have an odd sense of individuality and uniqueness, but that was the 80's for you.
The Eurythmics. Mostly for Annie Lennox, the only TRUE diva.
-
These really aren't in order except for my number one.
Radiohead - This band changed the way I thought about my guitar, keyboards and rock music.
The Beatles - amazing songwriters with super creative arrangements and structures.
The Beach Boys - Best Pop music ever.
Peter Gabriel - pretty much exactly what the above poster said about him, allthough if he hadnt made the album UP he would not be in my list.
Oingo Boingo - How can you not love a dancey new wave band fronted by Danny Elfman.
Pavement - So loose and sloppy but in the best way possible.
Elliot Smith - one of the best songwriters of the 90's
Foo Fighters - the last two albums sucked... but the first two were amazing and the 3rd one was solid. I saw them do their Acoustic Tour over the summer and have not been that moved by a band in years. I see and play alot of shows. No band I have seen with the exception of Radiohead has gotten me that excited about live music again.
Andrew Bird - fantastic songwriter, great voice, and i love his violin playing.
Pulp - just for the album Different Class alone they deserve a place in my Top 10

-
Emilie Autumn (excellent voice, violin playing, and body)
Dresden Dolls (Cabaret FTW)
Inkubus Sukkubus (nothing can be said)
Nightwish (what would I be without some kind of metal...)
Miranda Sex Garden (hence the MSG in my name 'nuff said)
Faith and the Muse (another of those just plain excellent bands)
Mediaeval Baebes (Miranda Sex Garden evolved into this 'nuff said)
Blackmore's Night (similar to mediaeval baebes but with more instruments and less voices)
Cruxshadows (awesome band, but I can't really describe it)
Die Form (too good for a description)

I know that's only 8, but, looking through my music library, there are genuinly not that many bands that I absoloubtly have to listen to every once in a while. There's a whole lot of stuff that is definitley very good, just not top-ten material
-
Okay, taking a stab and it will be hard:
1. Skinny Puppy(and all related projects). Every post I make in this music section seems to have something to do with them. I love 'em. I drive my friends crazy with them.
2. Godhead. Amazing. Noise. Period.
3. Killing Joke. Still making great music!
4. Placebo. My guilty pop pleasure. Great songs.
5. Antigen Shift. The Way of the North is probably the best album of the past few years that no one has heard.
6. Tom Waits. No reason need be made.
7. Android Lust. Four really consistently great and evolving albums. Bjork meets glitch and industrial.
8. The Smiths. They're just cheeky and total posturing, but that's the fun.
9. Haujobb. Essential electronica. ninetynine still gives me chills.
10. Pop Will Eat Itself. Another guilty pleasure maybe, but they are so good. No disputes.

Pretty crap. It wouldn't be as terrible if A7X were on there though.
-
At least A7X writes the occasional nifty guitar wank. The same cannot be said for, say, The Killers.
I'm kind of reluctant to try to put together my top ten favorite artists ever. I'd have to think about it for a while. I know that Jawbreaker and Hot Water Music would be on it, and probably The Replacements, but other than that...
