So, I was listening to Mars from The Planets yet again, and I got to thinking. Why do I play this so damn loud all the time.
For me, it is probably the above mentioned song and "Twin Killers" by Deerhoof.
The answer is that it's awesome, but what songs do you risk noise complaints from the neighbors to listen to properly?
-
"Galvanize" by the Chemical Brother feat Q-Tip (and I was listening to it before the commercials - not that I'm an early adopter, but I remember when it first got played on our radio station).
"Playgirl" by Ladytron, and Eric Prydz' new one - "Proper Education."
-
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
BARRACUDA
-
As far as Deerhoof songs go:
MILK MAN.
-
Every single song by Motorhead, but especially No Class.
-
Firebird. Dear god, Firebird.
The Infernal Dance of King Katschei to be specific.
-
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
BARRACUDA
Is that the song by Heart, cause yeah that song does rock...
For me it's "War" by Burzum, that song just sounds a lot better cranked.
-
I think they meant the one by Jefferson Aeroplane ( I think? )
-
EVERYTHING by Disturbed.
-
DETROIT ROCK CITY
-
Basically everything I listen to.
-
Why the hell has no one mentioned Sunn O))) yet? Without volume, they are nothing!
Also: Neurosis, and I guess every other drone band.
Most bands sound better loud, but it doesn't really hurt the experience much if you have it on quiet. (For most bands, anyway.)
-
Everyone's going to jump on me for saying this, but Andy, You're a Star.
-
immigrant song
-
Tyler <3s chunky basslines? I saw Heart live once... I was 16 and thought it was the coolest thing ever, because it was.
I have to crank it up to 11 when I listen to anything even remotely rocking that is fun to shout along to, like DFA 1979, Against Me!, Pixies, McLusky etc
-
Don't Stop Believin'
-
Arch Enemy.
After the intro to Ravenous, when the riff first kicks in, I have to crank it every time. So great.
-
Just about everything.
-
4'33''
-
Most stuff, particular examples of songs that really must might be:
Acid Bath - Cassie Eats Cockroaches
Amon Amarth - Death in Fire
The Anti-Nowhere League - So What?
Carpathian Forest - He's Turning Blue
The Count Nosferatu Kommando - Kommando '9
Cryptic Wintermoon - Thrashomatic Overdrive
Decapitated - Spheres of Madness
Finntroll - Slaget Vid Blodsalv
Hawkwind - Masters of the Universe
Immortal - Damned in Black
Judas Priest - All Guns Blazing
X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage! Up Yours!
...and so on and so forth.
-
Everything on Raw Power by The Stooges. Also, "Another Sunny Day" by Belle and Sebastian, because that opening may well be the most perfect sound in existence by my ears.
-
Gary Numan - RIP (I *love* cranking this up as loudly as possible. Then the loud bit starts and I dive for the volume knob.)
Wumpscut - Christfuck
Thrill Kill Kult - After The Flesh, Kooler Than Jesus
Primal Scream - Miss Lucifer, Swastika Eyes
Tori Amos - Raspberry Swirl
DITC - The Invisible
-
all of from a basement on the hill by Elliott Smith.
Also "A Day in the Life".
-
Merzbow
-
Primal Scream - 'Movin' On Up' and 'Kill All Hippies'
Hard-Fi - most of them, especially 'Hard To Beat' and 'Living For The Weekend.'
Ryan Adams - 'Political Scientist'
-
WHY hasn't anyone else mentioned Sunn? Surely I'm not the only fan here..
-
Because you already mentioned them?
Jeez, calm down man.
-

-
EVERYTHING by Disturbed.
NO don't even joke about that
black funeral - mercyful fate ALL HAIL SATAN!! aka music to hoon too...funny shit
-
for me everything from typical "indie" rock (arcade fire, sunset rubdown ect.) to ambient stuff (tim hecker, eluvium) to post rocking stuff all sounds a lot better when it's very loud. i don't know why but i enjoy music a lot more if it's blasting at a level that isn't safe for my ears to be subjected to.
-
Dude, Slint is sooooo much more dynamic at loud volumes.
Wait, are we not doing that joke anymore??
-
Pixies' Surfer Rosa sounds quiet to me, which gives me an excuse to turn it up way loud. I always get the impression that I would do so anyways though.
-
Dude, Slint is sooooo much more dynamic at loud volumes.
Wait, are we not doing that joke anymore??
You need to listen to my rap.
-
one of the grossly under rated 80's metal songs from a grossly under rated 80's metal band
Extreme - Get The Funk Out
IF YA DONT LIKE!!! WHAT YA SEE HERE!!! GET THE FUNK OUT!!!!
-
Drive Like Jehu- Here Come the Rome Plows
Holy shit.
-
Quientessence by Darkthrone is another one I love to crank. I like playing along on my guitar to it, preferably with the amp cranked way up...
-
"Pull Harder On The Strings of Your Martyr" by Trivium. Is the solo really played by their producer? I was watching a video of some guy playing the solo on YouTube, and he said that their producer played the solo for that song. :\ Either way it's still an aweosme rock out song.
-
When you pull into a car-park, blasting Bostons "Only a Feeling" at maximum volume, with a car full of people playing air-guitar, people know you mean business
-
Ignite - A place called home
Ramones - Bonzo goes to Bitsburg
Lawrence Arms - Are you there Margaret? Its me, God
David Bowie - Changes
These are songs that should be played pretty loud , so you get the full effect of the tune.
-
When you pull into a car-park, blasting Bostons "More than a Feeling" at maximum volume, with a car full of people playing air-guitar, people know you mean business
Fuck yes.
-
Rock the Casbah
Bohemian Rhapsody
-
"The Wolf is Loose" by Mastodon. It's my getting pumped music.
-
Any My Bloody Valentine
Blue Monday
Dinosaur Jr.
Mars, Bringer of War, is a great example too. That has to be really loud.
-
Anything/everything by Hum.
"Demon of the Fall" and "The Leper Affinity" by Opeth.
All of Wages of Sin by Arch Enemy (although I recommend skipping over "Starbreaker").
Just about all minimal techno sounds better the louder you play it.
-
All of LadyTron and all of Dragonforce
for Dragonforce it better be loud, because there is no way it should be played softly
-

Every song from this album. yeah.
-
NICE. I love that album
Shit Luck by Modest Mouse!
I'm Not Invisible by Rocket From The Crypt
Remedy by Hot Water Music
The whole of Mr. Beast
-
Oh man Shit Luck is the loudest song.
Also Brand New Cadillac by the clash.
-
Hawkwind - Right Stuff
And everything by m?t?rhead.
-
Song 2, Blur. And Smells Like Teen Spirit. A couple of pretty obvious ones for you.
-
Pretty much anything by 3 Inches of Blood, Amon Amarth, or Motorhead. Also, Dungen has being getting loud play from me lately. I left Ta Det Lungt blasting in my stereo when I left my house this morning.
As for one song? "Hey, What Time Is 'Pensecola: Wings Of Gold' On, Anyway?". Lawrence Arms.
-

Goat
You mean
(http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i2/ffgtthttghyujjfdss/JesusLizard.jpg)
Right?
Lets trade a few tracks from both and call it even. Actually, just play both of them really loud.
Really though, I love Liar ... Goat just edges it out by a tiny bit.
-
"Albuquerque" by Weird Al
-
Two oldies: "Dream On" and "I Want It All."
-
I like Goat more than Liar.
-
"Silent Shout" and "Heartbeats" by The Knife, "We Both Go Down Together" and "Odalisque" by The Decemberists, pretty much every song on The Dresden Dolls' "Yes, Virginia" , especially "Sing" and "My Alcoholic Friends" , "Eaten" by Bloodbath, "The Moor", "To Bid You Farewell" and "Demon Of The Fall" by Opeth.
-
I have to add Bleak and The Drapery Falls to the Opeth list.
-
Most of Ocean Machine - Biomech. I've always dreamt of flying through big sky country down a highway with this album on as loud as it would go. Perhaps I'm weird like that, but shoot: this stuff is epic.
Oh, and The Cardigans - "You're the Storm," the chorus of which gets me every time.
-
Oh man. Yes to Bio-Mech. Ultimate Yes.
Also, Bad Devil is a brilliant song to blast at ridiculous levels.
-
SummerHolidays Vs. PunkRoutine by Refused is pretty sweet, I spent high school cruising around the streets of Canberra in a beat up old Honda Civic listen to this track. The riff still brings back memories to this day.
A Fine Day to Die by Bathory would sound sweet cranked but I'm not game to try it seeing as I would piss off my flatmates immensly.
-
Nick Cave and the Badseeds - Babe I'm on Fire
The last track on Nocturama, it's fifteen minutes of repetitive, relentless not quite anger but not far off. Then it ends abruptly and theres calm.
-
Stutter by Elastica
A++
-
Mclusky. We somehow forgot Mclusky.
-
Jesu should be on this list.
-
"Wake The Dead" by Comeback Kid
-
Really though, I love Liar ... Goat just edges it out by a tiny bit.
I like Goat more than Liar.
Liar was the album that got me into The Jesus Lizard. It will allways be my favorite.
Also, yes, Jesu's Heart Ache EP should be on that list.
-
when the levee breaks - led zeppelin
bohemian like you - the dandy warhols (it's a thing with me and my best friend)
rebel yell - billy idol
your honor - regina spektor
drop dead gorgeous - republica
and when i get together with some friends that i've known since 6th grade, it's only natural we play the Spice Girls loudly. makes me remember why i'm glad i'm not 12. ah, the days.
-
The Arcade Fire - No Cars Go
The Blood Brothers - Set Fire to the Face on Fire
Clor - Dangerzone
The Evpatoria Report - C.S.S. Logbook
Flogging Molly - Black Friday Rule
The Grateful Dead - Jack Straw
Kill Hannah - Welcome to Chicago
Project 86 - Six Sirens
She Wants Revenge - I Don't Want to Fall in Love
Shiny Toy Guns - Don't Cry Out
Socratic - Turn
Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough
Tiger Army - Power of Moonlite
(My neighbors and my family hate me when I crank the music. :D)
But in all fairness, most any song sounds good loud; those are just my favourites.
-
"Eleven" by Mindless Self Indulgence
or just most MSI songs for that matter. :P
-
I must listen to Paint it Black loudly. Also, the Halo Theme Mjolnir mix.
-
"Wake The Dead" by Comeback Kid
Eeeeyep.
-
Any Rammstein song. Really, really, REALLY loud. Like, blow-your-eardrums-out loud.
Any Mindless Self Indulgence song(specifically Backmask, Faggot, & Bite Your Rhymes. While in pulblic, especially in the presence of a highly cristian friend and/or an elderly relitive)
Arc Of Time- Bright Eyes
Elephant Bones- That Handsome Devil
Cartoon Heros- Aqua
Money- Pink Floyd
Time- Pink Floyd
Barbie Girl- Aqua
Kill Hannah- Kennedy
-
Nick Cave and the Badseeds - Babe I'm on Fire
The last track on Nocturama, it's fifteen minutes of repetitive, relentless not quite anger but not far off. Then it ends abruptly and theres calm.
Personally I would listen to that song very, very, very, very quietly.
-
Guys, remember the lasy Grandaddy thread we had?
I'll recap, we all decided that Grandaddy were pretty okay, pretty good at best, nobody's favourite band, but a lovely band to have around.
Yesterday I got in the mood for some nice upbeat indie rock, but I am pretty burnt out on most of my library.
So I went back to Grandaddy.
And...
The more I listen their last album, Just Like the Fambly Cat, the more I think they were better than okay. Infact, when you play that album at ear shattering volumes, the thing becomes absolutely brilliant.
Get your old copy of Fambly Cat, get the best quality music output thingy you possibly can and crank up the volume.
I really wish I'd enjoyed the album this much when it first came out.
-

Oh, Arc of Time is major yes. That song is amazing. I've been yelled at for playing it too loudly many a time.
As to Barbie Girl...Haha, I'd listen to the Japanese version louder than the English one.
-
EVERYTHING by Disturbed.
Marry me?
I vote Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Wanna"
-
Everything by Kyuss, SUNN0))), OM, Sleep, Pelican, Blue Cheer, and Isis.
"Kill The King" and "The Blue Garden" by Masters of Reality.
"I Think I Lost My Headache," "Infinity," "Better Living Through Chemistry," "Song For The Dead," "The Sky is Fallin'," and "Born to Hula" by Queens of the Stone Age.
Let me reiterate and place emphasis.
"Born to Hula" by Queens of the Stone Age. Non-negotiable.
-
Shiny Toy Guns - Don't Cry Out
Tiger Army - Power of Moonlite
fuckin' A right
-
"Quadrat Im Kreis" - Wizo
Anything Dragonforce ever writes
"Timorous Me" - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
"Black Dog" - Led Zeppelin
"Are You Gonna Go My Way?" - Lenny Kravitz
"Semicharmed Life" - Third Eye Blind
"Francene" - ZZ Top
I could go on for quite a while but I'll stop with the gods of Texas blues-rock.
