Title: If I can truthfully say I liked Joy Division even before Ian Curtis died...
Post by: talysman on 12 Feb 2007, 11:23
Does that give me indie cred?  :-D
Or does it just make me old.

Man there are old people on this forum. Don't worry, it just means you've had taste for 20+ years.

Well Joy Division weren't too hot after he was dead.

Yeah, I didn't have much in the way of taste back then - was too busy being conceived.

Great band, shame about the thread

edit: I must say I am joking. I encourage most threads relating to Joy Division. Closer alternates with Weezer for the title of my favourite album ever. Wonderful stuff.

And I beg to differ about Joy Division not being too hot after he died. New Order have repeatedly stated they are basically the same band, and they have some great stuff. Although they don't have the quality control that they had as JD, that is largely out of their hands...

Being old and indie cred are not mutually exclusive.

You could just be an incredibly indie dinosaur.

Actually, I do have Closer, Unknown Pleasures, Still and the John Peel Sessions on vinyl.

I just don't have a turntable anymore...

That's nothing. I have a pet organ grinder who can only play Unknown Pleasures while his monkey does the Ian Curtis dance.

Well Joy Division weren't too hot after he was dead.

Joy Division didn't exist after he was dead.

That was, in fact, what I was implying there.

Do you want a gold star?

Yes, we know that the band did not exist as Joy Division after Ian's suicide, but does that mean one can't still like their music. Or are hipsters only allowed to like bands that have the potential for new material? I'm not go all classic rock "Nothing good was recorded after 1980" on you, but do you need to get so supercillious about whether a band exists or not after their demise?
