Title: Differntiation in Metal
Post by: SilentJ on 24 Feb 2007, 22:53
Search turned nothing up, so if this thread has been made already, I apologize.

I had my (somewhat small) metal library on shuffle the other day, and a thought occurred to me.  There are two levels of metal in and of itself.

Reading magazines like Guitar Player and whatnot, I realize that metal can be split into many groups; Speed Metal, Black Metal, Nu Metal, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, etc.

But it occurred to me that there is a very large distinction; one kind of metal (Metallica, Pantera, etc.) can be enjoyed at any time, anywhere.  There is a second group (Lamb of God especially) that one must be in a truly metal kind of mood to enjoy.

Has anybody else noticed this, or am I just weird as hell in how I listen to my music?

Hmm Metal's pretty much the only thing I listen too, but I get what your saying, though I think Lamb of God are crap all the time...

Anyway it's like any other genre different bands are more appropriate for different circumstances, it's like if you were at a nightclub you don't expect to hear Richard Wagner playing or if you went to the Opera House your not going to hear Rage Against the Machine...

As for some bands being played anywhere I'm not sure I get what distinction your trying to make. you can listen to anything you like provided your in the right mood for it. Obviously if I want to relax I'm not going to break out some thrash like Slayer or Metallica, I'm far more likely to but something like Opeth or Green Carnation on.

Simiralilly I like listen to music while I goto sleep, I can't really put on something overly technical like Cryptopsy or Cynic, it's too distracting, much better off putting something like Summoning or Bathory on.

As for being in a metal mood, I think the same can be said of other genre's as well, Prog is another genre I like to listen to but I  really have to be in the right frame of mind to get into it.

Metallica is thrash now?

I only listen to a band when I'm in the mood to listen to them. If I felt like listening to twee-pop I wouldn't be able to enjoy math rock until I'd listened to a few tracks and gotten into it.

Their first two albums are,  after that I like to pretend they stopped producing records.

you deny disposable heroes...shame shame shame

i agree with scytale in that there's really certain times to listen to certain music but i personally won't put anything completly out of mind for listening too

Master Of Puppets is one of those albums I used to love but find nowadays I don't enjoy it all, I'll still play "Orion" occasionally, but I never really thought Disposable Hereos was that good...

But hey a lot more people enjoy there newer albums then Ride the Lightning so I'm obviously in the minority here.

Basically, I can divide my metal into two slightly different genres.. There's angry metal and not so angry metal.

Angry metal, eg. anything particularly screamy and blast beaty, (thrash, death, black..) I can only listen to angry.

Any other metal I can listen to at most times.

Then you have the post metal stuff, Jesu, Isis, CUlt of Luna, etc., that I can listen to any time.

I think maybe you misunderstood me here. I'm just saying, some metal I can enjoy any time, anywhere, but others I have to be in a really angry mood and want to hurt something.

I find that I can only listen to metal live. And not a live recording- I have to be there. Other than that, the different types within the genre don't really matter to me, I can listen to them all.

I don't need to be a certain mood to listen to specific genres, I just jump between awesome bands regardless of subgenre.

Dancing from Dream Theater to Strapping Young Lad FTW

This is a silly thread.  Sort of like saying, "you know I really dig those dudes in the Cure but only when I'm sort of depressed,  isn't that weird!?!?!?!"  Metal can be mood music too, in fact by its very nature a lot of it is.  Imagine that.

I will now be gang raped by angry Cure fans who claim it's good whenever it's played, but you get what I mean.

Their first two albums are,  after that I like to pretend they stopped producing records.

The problem was that they switched from Flemming Rasmussen to Bob Rock.

I find that with my music collection as a whole rather than just the metal I listen to. Some bands (Led Zep for example) I can listen no matter where, when or what mood I am in. Other stuff (Zero 7 for example) requires a certain mood.

Well.. I can listen to most of what i listen to, expect in weird circumstances where i don't want certain affects; I'm not mapping what i listen to towards my mood, i'm using music to tailor my mood.
Sometimes i'll purposely listen to electric ladyland to be mellow, or zeppelin 4 to be light and involved, or  Burn My Eyes for ambition, or the Great southern trendkill to get a  scream out at the start and then relax a bit (sort of..er.... yeh...um), or dopethrone cause i've gotto spend a long time working all day.. Dragonforce if im exercising and for some reason burzum helps me clean my room... Lost wisdom in particular.. it does, honest!.

But.. Not the other way around, unless its dancing.. But i'd rather be throwing myself around to Carcass than trying to move under the crap we get in Glasgow clubs.
