Title: TMNT
Post by: KID on 05 Mar 2007, 20:21
Is anyone else as scared bout thenew movie as I am? No foot clan, strange voices, CG, freakish models, it could very well destroy my childhood as I know it. Thoughts?

Much like my getting hugged by Sarah Chalke story, I feel I have to reiterate the fact that Peter Laird went to my high school. Had the same chem teacher I did. Legend has it he was told by said teacher "You'll never get anywhere drawing turtles".

WHO HAD THE LAST LAUGH, YOU DROPKICKING OLD MAN?!

I'll go and see it. I have to.

I was the most Ninja Turtles obsessed child EVER, and I approve! I was very skeptical about the CGi, but seeing it in action does not look bad. I have pretty high hopes and will be seeing it.

First of all, this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fCs9PFYHTe8) is the biggest ninja turtle fan of all time. And I'm excited to see this movie. I'm really just happy it's not based off of the god awful anime series they have now. I hated the art style of the turtle when I first look ed at the teaser a while back, but now it's grown on me. They have a neat look to them, they look more gangly like teenagers..

I love Secret of the Ooze. Good friggin movie. and I still hate the art style on the new ones because they're so gangly. The look too amphibious, and not muscley ninja turtles-esque.

And I am jealous of the worlds biggest ninja turtles fan's stuff.

I actually prefer the movie Ninja Turtles. They took the best of the cartoon and mixed it well with the comic book, which is great.

I see a lot of hate for the new Ninja Turtles series, but I've got to say, it was really good on its onset. The first few seasons were pretty fun to watch. Then it got crap with Fast Forward, but it wasn't always crap. It was different. I really liked their April O'Neil. Fast Forward, God.

I was, pretty much, the last person on Earth to hear about this movie. I didn't even know about this movie until last month. I don't understand what it's about. No clue.

Though, maybe this'll open up the inevitable TMNT vs. Predator. I've said it before, Shredder looks way too much like a Predator to be mere coincidence.

Then edit your post and delete the pic?

I saw the preview. The voices scared me. The animation scared me. I think I'm going to avoid that movie while it's in theaters (at least). And I doubt there will be a ninja rap, so I don't really see how it could possibly beat the old movies.

I liked the 80's/90's cartoon series and movies because they were pandering to kids of the time like me with the whole surfer dude thing.

I could never have nostalgia for the new incarnations of the Ninja Turtles because now they pander to the current generation of kids.

There was a ninja rap at the end, during the credits, and the guy who is doing the song referenced Bebop and Rocksteady (though I couldn't figure out the context as to whether it was a legit reference).

As far as the new series goes, I thought it was pretty well done in the first season, and I caught an episode the other day that was really pretty violent and depressing.  I don't think it panders too much, at least not as much as the old series.  I have 6 or so tapes with 2 episodes apiece, and they are really just piss poor god awful.  ... I enjoy the shit out of them, but goddamn.

You guys are all forgetting how the old series of TMNT ended aren't you? April's work building burns down, new bad guys come and kick Shredder's butt or something, and the turtles develop mutant morphing powers?
The old series of TMNT completely sucked.

The rebirth series started off great. I loved everything I've seen from it. HOWEVER.
I saw an advert on the television this morning depicting the turtles being thrust into the future. They were wearing weird futuristic gauntlets and there were hovercars. I think this abomination is called 'fast forward'? Mentioned earlier in this thread?

That should be considered completely seperate to the first few seasons. They fucked up bad there. You wouldn't put Batman Returns and Batman&Robin in the same grouping would you? So don't do the same to TMNT and TMNTFF.

You're supposed to, though. That's why they made Batman Begins.

The movie wasnt as bad as i thought it might be, though knowing the original series anything new seems not as good!

Who was the woman leading the foot clan though?
Title: Re: TMNT
Post by: Orbert on 02 Apr 2007, 12:45
Saw it this weekend. It wasn't too bad. Character angst, growing pains, semi-interesting storyline which was predictable but had a minor twist or two.

I think the woman was supposed to be the daughter of Shredder?  That's what I heard, anyway. For right now, she's spooky and mysterious. She did tell them point blank that they'd meet again, and obviously they've already got a few sequels mapped out, so I guess it's supposed to be a secret. But come on, how many possibilities are there?

The female leader of the foot is Korai, she's from the new series.  I forget where she came from exactly, but I don't think she's shreeder's daughter.  Just a remnant leader from the foot.

I whole heartedly agree about the piss poor quality that is Fast Forward.  what truly saddens me is that they have pretty much relagted this as the  TMNT animted series now as though show very little of the restarted one.

Soo... I saw TMNT a couple days ago...

My thoughts? It wasn't the definitive TMNT experience. That honor still rests with the first live-action movie... Ernie Reyes may be a mediocre martial artist, but at least he had a good role there. I digress; it was actually an entertaining, if flawed, flick.

My gripes:
A) Too Raph/Leo-centric. Mikey was only in there for cheap jokes, and Don had - PERHAPS - 10 lines in the whole movie after his first appearance, none of which were particularly critical or plot-enhancing. This isn't to say the plot with Leo and Raph was poor - it was quite good - but it wasn't quite satisfying enough.

B) "Winters" character a tad flimsy. Good concept, but... well... if you're kickstarting a series from the 80's, I think you should start with a classic villain. Even if you wanna keep Shredder dead, which apparently they won't be doing, you could bring in one of the other villains from the comic series. Hell, I bet Wingnut and Screwloose are begging to be let back out of their box!

C) Cheesy angle with the 13 monsters. I know that ties in with Gripe B, but I thought it stood well enough on its own to be Gripe C. And I'm now critiquing my own gripes, it seems.

My kudos:
A) Kickass fight sequences. The BIG fight sequence (not the last one, but the most dramatic one... I won't spoiler it, although odds are you've heard of it by now) is actually worth the price of admission. Kicked the living shite outta anything from the Star Wars prequels.

B) Some worthy humor. A lot of throwaway jokes from Mikey, but a lot of good stuff in there as well.

C) An movie you can take your kid brother to and not feel ripped off after watching... bonus points!

As much as I liked TMNT back in the day, someone (I forget) was right when he/she said that TMNT panders to the current generation of kids. Besides, every series is designed to sell crappy toys. EVERY SERIES. When they started that fast forward series, I bet you they made new dolls...I mean, ACTION FIGURES...to sell to the kids who watch. These are old marketing schemes and tricks. Nothing new, just "new" stuff.

I took my son to watch this movie yesterday, and I was surprised that it didn't totally suck...It was not great, but it was not bad either, the animation was descent, the fight scenes we're good, the story was iffy, but the whole experiences was well worth it...my kid came out happy, and wanting to kick ass, witch reminded me of how I came out of the first live action turtles movie...one thing i did like, was at the end when splinter put the helmet on the shelf, you can se the original ooze canister, shreadder's mask, and the scepter that took them back in time...nice ending...

They are only allowed to use Wingnut and Screwloose if they're willing to bring in Man-Ray, Leatherhead, Dreadmon and the rest of the Mighty Mutanimals.

When I was a wee lass, a new month didn't officially start until I'd gotten my fresh copy of the Mutanimals.

I think the new cartoon is/was pretty good.  (Not Fast Forward, everyone pretty much agrees that it sucks.)  The character design, the voice acting, the stories, the action, all pretty well done in my opinion.  Definitely closer to the comics than the original series.  It was one of the few cartoons still worth watching on Saturday mornings, sandwiched in between endless episodes of the unholy nightmare that is Yu-Gi-Oh.
I'll give the new movie a chance even though it dosen't look like what I was expecting.
AND Ernie Reyes a "mediocre" martial artist?!?!  You're kidding, right?

I remember I sent away for a subscripion for that before I understood the concept of the addresses.  I don't remember what I screwed up in the mail order process, but I was very disappointed after a few months passed when it dawned on me.
