yeah, i never really wanted to be one of the "Helo guyz, could u recommend me sume music, K thx bye" people, but i really dont know many Indie Electronica (or just any Electronica) bands so i just need a bit of help.
and don't bother mentioning Ladytron, already got most of their stuff, it was actually Witching Hour that made me think i was gonna need to find other electronica bands.
-
The Notwist
Add N to (X)
Tom Waits
-
Four Tet (http://www.fourtet.net/site/index.html).
-
I am X is worth a listen.
As are Cut Copy
-
Cut Copy kinda change it up a little don't they? And they use all guitars and such. They're awesome though so look em up too.
-
Gerling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerling), especially the album When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun.
-
1,000,000 Tiny Tiny Jesus's
They're SUPER hard to find because they're not really big. I stumbled across their album at Oink and it's one of my favorites now. I'll try to upload it once I get home. Here's their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/onemilliontinytinyjesuses) to tie you over until then. I refer to them as Aphex twins sons when I describe them to friends.
edit
Also, check out Vitalic, he's super duper awesome as well.
-
I have no idea what electronica comes under 'indie' but seconding I Am X and recommending Shout Out Out Out's "Not Saying/Just Saying", M83's "Dead Cities, Red Seas And Lost Ghosts" and anything by Telefon Tel Aviv/Dntel/M?m.
-
Aphex Twin, Autechre (their earlier stuff iz bettah), Boards of Canada (stick with either Geogaddi or Music Has The Right To Children), and Squarepusher. All big names, but all technically indie.
-
Well, what kind of electronica. I know, genres, genres, genres, I hate them too, but you need to know them to be able to communicate with people who use them, otherwise you'll get something like: "Yeh, post-rock! You listen?" "Bwuh? Like, Led Zep! Man, Yeah!"
Well, there's Portishead, which is under trip-hop, but I prefer noir techno.
Porishead - Dummy
Then there's Propellerhead, which I think is Big Beat, but I prefer spy techno.
Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll
The Avalanches - Since I Left You is pretty awesome.
But from what it sounds like you're looking for more ambient stuff?
So, for that I second Boards of Canada, pick up Music Has the Rights To Children or Geogaddi.
If you strictly want current "indie" electronica, I'll take that as current "popular" electronica.
So try LCD Soundsystem I guess, or Air, get Walkie Talkie? I don't know as much about current "electronica" as I'd like to.

Also, Future Sound of London.
Cornelius is alright too.
-
Shout Out Out Out's "Not Saying/Just Saying"
Winner.
You're one "Out" short though.
-
PlayRadioPlay! isn't half bad, but he is kind of popular. Also, you guys will probably hate me for this, but...Hellogoodbye makes some pretty decent electronica, and i would suggest The Postal Service, but i fear i might have my head electronically ripped off for doing so. Small Sins. I heard them in a store, and they're fun.
-
oh my god I hate Hellogoodbye so much.
Postal Service are okay.
-
Oh man how'd I forget Amon Tobin. He has a new album out called Foley Room which is pretty great.
-
oh my god I hate Hellogoodbye so much.
Postal Service are okay.
I guess i should have just chopped it down to PlayRadioPlay! and Small Sins... :|
-
No, just chop hellogoodbye out, postal service can stay.
But like, I will freak if I hear that guy's hella vocoder'd voice again.
-
Ratatat.
-
Ratatat.

Cut Copy kinda change it up a little don't they? And they use all guitars and such. They're awesome though so look em up too.
Going by the album (Bright Like Neon Love) I've got, I think one of their songs is predominately guitars, and the rest is VERY 80s synthpopish. In mine opinion, anyway. But yeah, they're awesome.
-
To be honest, I was basing that more off what I've heard of them rather than what I've heard from them. They were going on about how the guy from Cassius who produced their upcoming (maybe it's out by now, I don't know) album reacted to their more guitar stuff so I kinda figured it was more prominent. Bright Like Neon Love has been on my list for ages and I think their new one's gonna go right on there too.
Have you heard the new single "Hearts on Fire" yet? It's way awesome and way, way 80s.
-
There's lots of good stuff. I really dig the french label M-Tronic...lots of good bands covering all sorts of areas of electronica. The best news is you can get a 2 disc label sampler called "Table of Elements 2.0" for free right now. You may not like all of it, but there's gonna be something for everyone.
You can find it here: http://mtronic.free.fr/index2.html
-
I'm going to go way out from the rest of the folks and recommend Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren (together known as Way Out West, but awesome in their own right). Also Gabriel and Dresden's studio album. Anything done by James Holden, but his live set from the Sonar Festival on 19-06-2005 is a damn good round-up of his style. (Also Various Artists - James Holden at the Controls, or Various Artists - Balance 005.) Give Desyn Masiello a spin as well. Same with Anthony Pappa. And, finally, the one, the only... Hybrid. Nothing else like them.
-
The Knife, maybe? I guess they are probably not indiue enough, cos I thought they would have been in here already...
-
i hope you guys don't hate me for making my third post in like 3 years about my own band, but...
check out the landau orchestra! :-D
www.netlandau.com
or www.myspace.com/netlandau, for stuff off our upcoming album on milan records.
i'm just the trombone player, but i think it's really great stuff with beautiful textures. lots of acoustic instruments, with electronic things going on over top of them.
hopefully we'll be doing some touring this summer- if so, do i have the qc community's permission to come back and post tour dates?? hahaha. maybe i better let you guys listen first, before you decide.
anyway. please check it out. it's good stuff, in my opinion. otherwise i wouldn't be playing with them.
-
"these arms are snakes" look em up. i think they are pretty good
-
re: Postal Service, there's a band called Immoor who sound like an ever-so-slightly more relaxed and less whiny version of Postal Service, so if you like that give 'em a go I guess.
And, finally, the one, the only... Hybrid. Nothing else like them.
Hybrid are fuckin' immense. Not sure about 'indie' electronica but on the subject of this kinda stuff, Kaito's "Special Life" cd is worth a go for anyone who likes Hybrid. Which should be everyone because yeah, they are THAT good.
edit: while there's an electronic thread about I'm gonna steal some space to pimp the Ambient Nights project (http://ambientnights.org/)
This guy makes mixes of awesome chilled-out electro tunes and distributes 'em free. Each album comes as one stonkin' great mp3 but you can download the .cue from the same page and split it up. For an example of what kind of music's on the mixes, start with the best - Ambient Nights vol.3 (http://www.ambient-nights.org/an03.php). Track 3 of this is the most beautiful thing ever.
The Sol System series is also pretty goddamn good.
-
Ratatat.
hell yeah, oh HELL YEAH
also i totally love The Avalanches, a biiiiiit weird but still very good. thanks for the bands guys.
and while were on the topic of electronica, has anyone here ever heard of Alpinestars? i have yet to find someone that has ever listened to them without me slamming it into their ears

Burr? Are we talking about the same These Arms Are Snakes? I'd call them metalcore, experimental hardcore, maybe, but certainly not any brand of electronica.
-
Just as I wouldn't classify Ratatat as electonica...
-
Electronica is definately one of the genres where you need to specify a subgenre or two to get what you're after. Indie is not a subgenre.
Actually there probably isn't a genre of music where this doesn't apply.
-
Electronica has a wide range of genres with a DIY-ethos running through most of them, so 'Indie' counts for loads of stuff.
But my most recent love affair, musically-speaking, is with the dubstep genre. It's the new 'thing' from London, but hyped for all the right reasons.
Think of a grime/drum&bass track pitched ridiculously low, with ambient-influences and other noises adding up to the thunderous beats.
It's dark, it's heavy, you really should hear it live, as your subwoofer at home wouldn't do it justice, but most of all: it's exciting. It's the birth of a whole new genre, and right now there are some producers doing excellent stuff.
Essential albums:
Kode9 + the Spaceape - Memories of the Future
Burial - Burial
Skream - Skream
Vex'd - Degenerate
Oh, and another recommendation, just because:
Gridlock- Formless.
-
Oh man, Gridlock is awesome!
Sorry to hijack the topic, but Nosh, could you recommend stuff more in the vein of Gridlock? I "acquired" Further to see what it was like and really likey what I heard. Gridlock did a remix of a few Android Lust songs, and they're also really damn awesome.
-
I'm a total elitist when it comes to so-called electronica. Things like IDM just don't fit in my world view. (Because I am small-minded and think those goths that like to get whacked on drugs and listen to shitty electronic music can go fuck off already.)
See? Elitist. So close-minded, it is horrible.
-

Try to 'find' the 'Augmented Lines' album from Somatic Responses.
It's colder, more industrial-oriented at times, but oh so good.
Same goes for Architect - The Analysis of Noise Trading, which has been released on the Hymen label, so it shouldn't be that hard to find.
Reminded me of Gridlock, because of the combination between ambient, dream-like soundscapes and dark, industrial noises.
Excellent for midnight-listening sessions, in bed, with your headphones on.
-
Boards of Canada (stick with either Geogaddi or Music Has The Right To Children)
What about The Campfire Headphase. :(
-
The Presets, Cut Copy, New Young Pony Club, Midnight Juggernauts, Van She
-
These probably are not Electronica but this is what i recommend
Does it Offend You, Yeah?
MSTRKRFT
Soulwax
The Blow
Crystal Castles
-
those goths that like to get whacked on drugs and listen to shitty electronic music can go fuck off already.)
:'(
-
I'm entitled to my (horribly offensive) opinion, no? :)
Soulwax, yes, damn good stuff that.
-
I would recommend listening to Orbital, as they are fantastic. Start with their first album (Untitled / the green album), and from their you can probably just move your way up chronologically. "Chime" (green album), "Halcyon and On and On" (Brown Album), and "The Girl with the Sun in her Head" (green album) are the three songs I would recommend most highly.
-
I'm entitled to my (horribly offensive) opinion, no? :)
No hard feelings, I just really like drugs and EBM :D
-
Is "sexy robot-lady themed" a valid sub-genre? Cause then I have to go with Android Lust (Though I don't really know where Industrial ends and Electronica begins - might not be what you are looking for).
-
I do not listen to much electronica(and the like) but I fully endorse these four albums:
Lamb - Lamb(drum'n'bass with torch singer and triphop sensibilities)
Matmos - The Civil War(organic experimental stuff)
Daedelus - Denies the Day's Demise(danceable instrumental hiphop)
Jim O'Rourke - I'm Happy and I'm Singing and a 1,2,3,4(glitch ambient)
-
These probably are not Electronica
MSTRKRFT
:?
-
I never would have classed dubstep as electronica, although I suppose it makes sense. (I hate most dance music, but I like breakcore and the like, as well as electroclash and electropop stuff.)
-
"these arms are snakes" look em up. i think they are pretty good
Burr? Are we talking about the same These Arms Are Snakes? I'd call them metalcore, experimental hardcore, maybe, but certainly not any brand of electronica.
i would classify them as electronica indie. they dont scream really, and they do sing quite a bit on "easter" and they do use keyboards. so umm yeah they actually are electronica indie. funny thing that
-
Dream Theater use keyboards and I wouldn't really call them electronica prog rock
-
That's a mindboggling viewpoint if there ever was one :?
-
Dream Theater use keyboards and I wouldn't really call them electronica prog rock
well i wasnt really talking about keyboards in general. i was mainly talking about electronica keyboard stuff, sorry for ot making that clear. "these arms are snakes" has a very electronica sound. and i think if people concider "the postal service" indie electronica
then "these arms are snakes" are also indie electronica....
:?
-
I'm on a Temporary Residence Limited kick right now so I'm going to recommend:
Kammerflimmer Kollektief
Sybarite
Cex
Fridge
All four of those are (or were in kk's case) on the TRL label and each is fantastic example of electronicy goodness. Well worth looking into. I love most of the stuff done by all those bands.
-
doesn't 'indie' just really represent the word 'independant'? and when it comes to electronic music. isn't it all basically independant? tons of cats out there making shit on their PC's without any outside help at all.
at any rate. someone already mentioned ellen alien. Jeph has mentioned numerous times his adoration of the Ellen Alien and Apparat album called 'Orchestra of Bubbles' which is a good accessible poppy kind of electronica. also worth checking out is Apparat's own albums. entitled Trial and Error, Multifunktionsebene, Duplex (which just yesterday got props from Jeph), Algorhythm, Shapemodes, and Silzium. (the track Komponent in particular is beautiful) when apparat throws lyrics into his tracks they take on a whole new force.
the voice in the back of my mind is telling me that what you kids mean by 'indie' really means more like 'accessible' or 'poppy'. so I'll keep to that..
more to the IDM side of things, check out Beefcake. specifically the album 'Drei'. Gridlock has already got mention, they're along the same lines as beefcake. for more chilled out sounds try some cats like New Delhi FM, or Ishq, Monolake, Jetone, xploding plastix...
another one I have to toss out there is the ethereally beautiful, melancholic, and sometimes haunted sounding Ulrich Schnauss.
Dj Cuddlefish could go on and on and on and on really. he'll cut it short today.
cheers!
-
Telefon Tel Aviv are two guys from Chicago who make amazing IDM.
Both of their albums (Fahrenheit Fair Enough and Map of What Is Effortless) are highly recommended.
-
Ratatat and The Legends are my favorites :]
-
Decoder Ring - sort of indie electronica but with big layer-y post-rock elements.
as far as albums go - start with the Somersault score they did or Fractions.
Pivot - are the same sort of thing I guess...
and listen to the person who reccommended Gerling. they are tops.
-
thanks for the help guys. I just nabbed Ladytron's 604 (which made me very happy cuz i have all 3 now Yay!) and Ratatat's self titled. Im really looking forward to getting some Add n to (x) and Apparat when i get paid
-
Mmm, Add N to (X).
Get Loud Like Nature.
-
Postal Service is just Ben Gibbard with Dntel, right? So . . . Dntel. Dumb Luck is out and its not half bad.
Also . . . mouse on mars. Radical Connector and Varcharz are both great starting points -- the farther you go back, the sparser it gets.
Finally, on the dance side, Infected Mushroom. Vicious Delicious is awesome.
-

Have they changed of late? I saw them a couple of years ago and they were doing that standard sort of sassy stuff so many people who used to be in hardcore bands are up to these days. I think there may have been keyboards but it was a fair way from electronica. Mind you, they weren't really trying since they had blatantly realised that hardly anyone there gave a rat's ass about them.
