Or, rather, question:

Upon first hearing the latest Decemberist single, "O Valencia," did anyone else think it was a new They Might Be Giants song?

Not really, I thought it sounded pretty much exactly what I'd expect from the Decemberists.

The lines "Like either heads or tails / Would let me know if I should go / Back to the ship or back to jail" seem almost parenthetical due to the inclusion of the "like." I think he's rationalising a decision he made well in advance.

Perhaps he is drawing attention to how betrayal is tied in with capitalism with the uniform representing comradery and the coin selfishness.
