I picked up Blood Inside not too long ago. I didn't give it a proper listen the first time (I was playing Dragon Quest 6 while listening :roll: ), but I gave it the full "headphones listen" this time. I think this is one of the best albums I've heard in quite a while. I would describe it as "heavily layered vocal harmonies atop dense sheets of deep black tones, with key changes that are utterly unintuitive, yet utterly awesome when your mind settles into realizing what just happened."
I understand that all of their albums are pretty much different from all the rest, and I think Blood Inside is not even commonly regarded as their best album, which means I have a lot to look forward to. If you're familiar with any of their other work, talk about it here, give me descriptions of how it sounds, and whether or not it overwhelms you the same way this one has overwhelmed me.

I have to admit I was fairly dissapointed by Blood Inside. It was the first Ulver album I heard, and it almost turned me off the band. It just seems to me that Ulver tried to experiment too much, and they couldn't pull it off.
Personally, my two favourite records are Bergtatt and Nattrens Madrical. Bergtatt is freaking awesome, so foresty and beautiful, probably my favourite black metal album ever. NM is probably better, just in terms of the sheer art and maybe even beauty, but it's really hard to listen too, what with the production. Still, Nattrens is an absolute masterpiece, just very difficult to listen too. I probably should describe the music- it's insanely fast black metal, with hardly any break.. But it's done really damn well.
I haven't heard too much of their other stuff, but I thought the Metamorphosis EP was a solid slab of techno/trip hop/ambient/whatever. Personally though, I think you should get Bergtatt next (because It's freaking awesome) and then just buy your way through their discography.

I got into their newer stuff first because I got into post-black metal before "real" bm, but having gotten sufficiently into more of the real stuff, I went and checked out some old Ulver. Bergtatt is pretty fucking awesome, I must say.

Bergtatt is amazing one of my favorite albums for sure. It's my favorite of their "Black Metal" period...
Theme's from William Blake's the Marriage of Heaven and Hell is my favorite of their non BM stuff, it's kind of ecletic and scattered but has some amazing moments through out.
Garm's a pretty amazing guy, aside form he's work with Ulver I really love the stuff he did with Arcturus, I actually got into Ulver through Arcturus' "La Masquerade Infernale" album.

I kind of think of Garm as a Norwegian Mike Patton what with the pathological genre-blending tendencies and obvious vocal ability.

That's true. Garm is way better though. HIs singing voice owns Mike Pattons... I'd say The Sham Mirrors (arcturus) has probably the best metal vocals ever.

I actually don't think the production on Nattens Madrigal is so horrible, and I prefer the vocals on that album over Bergtratt any day.
I'd say, start with checking out Perdition City (lost in moments is so fantastic) and Nattens Madrigal. If you're into black metal, go with nattens madrigal first, otherwise perdition city. And then A quick fix of melancholy, and then.. yeah, you get it, everything is great (allthough, the first minutes on silence teaches you how to sing hurts a lot in my ears:/)
